Two day’s latter Lizzy was up at four in the morning again only this time it was to catch her flight that left PDX (Portland International Airport) at 6:15, by 5:45 she was through security and being boarded to Untied Airlines 132. She arrived in Chicago four hours later, due to the time difference it was lunch time. Lizzy wasn’t sure if she was hungry but she had an hour to kill and the smell of the Starbucks as she walked by to meet her connecting flight was to temping to resist. She made United 570 with plenty of time to spare and sat for a while sipping her mint mocha frapichino while looking at a paper that someone had left strewn about. Lizzy was surprised that more people didn’t realize that you could get a mint mocha any time of year if you just asked for it. Her thoughts were interrupted by the boarding call, which she rushed on to. Lizzy’s got off the plane almost an hour and a half later at 3:30pm and by a quarter after four she was driving the three miles from Central City Airport to Springwood. She was surprised at how smoothly the first six and half hours of her day had went, she had expected questions about the unusual book in her carryon or that they would lose her luggage. She even expected something to go wrong with the car she had rented, but nothing had.
She looked up and saw the sign “Welcome to Springwood, population 15, 265” there was a family painted on the sign old and faded with smiling faces, next to them were written the words ‘A nice place to live.’ Lizzy started giggling to herself as she passed by the sign. By five-thirty Lizzy was pulling into up in front of 1426 Elm street and got out, she walked around to the front door and knocked, from inside she could hear an man calling something out and a few moments later her father opened the door his smile quickly changing to a look of pure shock as Lizzy gave him a half smile.
“Hi Daddy.” She spoke first because she wasn’t sure what to say, she hadn’t really told him she was leaving a few years ago, just one day she just packed up and was gone.
“Oh my lord, baby come here.” He the older man said as he stepped out and gave her a tight hug. He pulled her into the house not really releasing her; it seemed he was almost afraid she would disappear. She sat talking with her father until the sun started turning the sky different shades of deep pink and purple, she looked at her watch it was around eight pm.
"Well daddy I'm gonna have to get home, and get at least my bedding taken care of. You can come see me tomorrow if you feel up to it or I can come back after I get some things unpacked, okay?" Lizzy asked.
"You have a place here in town?" He asked a little surprised.
"Yea, just next door actually." She smiled standing up and teaching. She didn’t want to have to tell him which house it would be bad enough when he found out on his own she didn’t want to get into an argument in the kitchen with him or her choice of residency.
"Oh the old Harris place? I know that the Lantz's still own the house right across the street but moved out years ago." He asked, he didn’t bring up the fact that the reason Pam and Bob Lantz had moved was because their son Glen had been brutally murdered in his own bedroom several year ago.
"Umm no dad Campbell's." She said not wanting to go into details.
"The Campbell's? Your renting 1428?!" He said clearly getting worried.
"Oh no dad of course not, you taught me better then that." She said assuring him, but she had a feeling the next part might send him over the edge. "I bought it."
"YOU WHAT?!?!" He yelled standing up. It was clear he was really upset and she knew she had to calm him down before he gave himself a heart attack, if he hadn't already.
"Relax dad, breath. Do you need your medication?" Lizzy asked standing up and walking to the refrigerator.
"Relax? Your telling me you bought the old Krueger place and your telling me to relax? Do you have any idea how many people have been killed in that house?" He asked, Lizzy was getting upset herself at this point.
"Yes dad, three. Mrs. Krueger, Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Campbell. That’s it and all of those women were in their forties, and on several medications. I know for a fact that the medication Mrs. Krueger was on has since been recalled by the FDA for causing unexplained heart failure in 43% or users. How about the fact that Mrs. Thompson was a known alcoholic and also had a steady supply of pain killers in her system, I believe that combination has been known to kill people, that’s why the surgeon general tells people not to do it." Lizzy said sharply.
"You sound just like that Chief we have now…wants to cover everything up and keep a lid on it…and anyone who tries to say anything is carted off to Weston hills!!" He growled back.
"Daddy I'll be fine, no one that's dead is gonna hurt me. Now I really have to get going I've got to be at the school tomorrow for class." She said kissing his check then turning to go.
"I cant stop you can I?" He asked hopefully.
"No daddy but if it will make you feel better leave the key under the mat." She said as she turned to leave
