Water Songs
Location: BPRD
Night and Day. It never really seemed like one ended when another began. In the BPRD, time did not matter(although night seemed to be preferred). Most nights(and days), agents of the Bureau where out and about in their rather large garbage truck, taking care of other beings that had decided to have a little fun screwing with the humans of the world. Tonight seemed a bit different.
The night had started out well. There where no sirens, no previous cases that needed to be finished and everyone was becoming thankful for the peace that seemed to have settled upon the building. Everyone was in their places; Hellboy, in his room, more than likely watching T.V upon his bed, surrounded by cats, Liz, in her own room, pondering over her firey abilities, and Abe, in his tank, enjoying a rotten egg or two while reading his four books. The human agents where currently either sleeping or possibly playing cards, also enjoying their night of peace and quiet.
Although everything seemed to be in rightful place and order. Two people where missing from the nicely placed equation.. Dr. 'Broom' had been missing for at least an hour an a half, having been called to the nearest airport to pick of some matter of interest. John Meyers had accompanied him, and they had yet to return. No one really worried; Manning had been the one to call, so the possiblities of anything to severe happening, where quite low. So the night continued without fail.
Another hour passed, and almost without warning, the peace in the Library was broken, at least for a moment. As Abe started on the two pages of his fourth book, the doors where suddenly opened and a rather tall crate was pushed inside, two other agents on either side, keeping the dark wooden crate steady as it was wheeled inside, followed by John and Dr. Broom. As the tall item was placed carefully in the middle of the Library, a crowbar was handed to John and the dolly was taken out; the other agents where quickly dismissed.. "Open the crate John. And be careful." Dr. Broom instructed easily, walking around toward a case full of books. "Abe, I think we'll need your help." he said easily and the aquatic male placed himself in front of the glass, tilting his head slightly. "Of course Professor." and with that, he disappeared from the glass momentarily.
Dr. Broom turned from the book case as the sound of cracking wood filled the Library and one side of the crate fell to the floor. John, whom had lept out of the way, came back to remove the other three sides, and was stunned by what he saw inside. A soft aqua blue light filtered out, and he went on removing the wood, seeming to take extra care now that he knew what lay inside. As the rest of the sides where removed, Abe emerged from a door somewhere else and had to pause in his footsteps, his head turning slightly as he blinked. "Why.. Dr. Broom.. do you realize what this is?" he asked the professor, turning to look at the elderly man with deep curiosity. The older man sighed deeply and gave a nod, "An actual mermaid, yes Abe." he said with a nod and John set down the crowbar, walking over to the two. "So, what? Mermaids wheren't suppose to be real?" John asked, wondering why there seemed to be such speculation hiding between the conversation.
Dr. Broom gave John a slight smile, "There hasn't been an actual mermaid sighting in many years Agent Meyers. We had begun to think that they had disappeared entirely." he said before looking back at the tank. "This one was found washed up on Liberty Island in New York. Luckily she was found by government officals and Dr. Manning was called immediately. They placed her within this tank and sent to us. We need to find out who she is and see if there are any others like her." he explained and both beside him nodded. John, whom had kept his eye on the tank the whole time jumped as Dr. Broom finished his explination. "She's awake!"
Both heads turned and they took in the sight for a moment. Now awake, the female being was moving slightly, both hands pressed against the glass, her head tilted, looking at all of them with question in her eyes. Her upper body, as in many books and stories, was that of a woman, a maid. Her hair was long, and black, rich in color and it flowed about her like a veil. Her eyes, which where going from Dr. Broom, to Abe, to John, and back again, where dark navy blue, as if mirroring the dark blue ocean..Going further, one could see that she was covered; not modestly, but covered. A wrap, off white, tied around her chest, covering all but her shoulders and stomach that eventually led down to the fin that made her a mermaid. It was dark, a darker navy as her eyes where, with a pale aqua stripe that went vertically up the underside of her fin. Where her hips and thighs should have been, four dark violet purple stripes on each side met with the aqua, finishing off her unique coloration. Noticing that the attention seemed to be all on her, the female's cheeks went pink and she tapped on the glass softly, as if trying to snap them out of their trances.
Dr. Broom blinked as the soft tink on the glass brought the three of them back to their senses and he stepped up to the glass. "Hello my dear. My name is Dr. Bruttenholm, this is Abraham Sapien, and Agent John Meyers. You are here at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. We found you uncontious on the shores of Liberty Island. Can you remember anything?" he asked, his voice was gentle, taking on a fatherly tone that he had gained over the years of looking after Hellboy. The maiden immediately took a liking to him and gave a soft smile and opened her mouth, as if to speak, before closing it and looking down shyly, almost in defeat. She placed a soft ivory hand upon her lips before looking up and placing her finger tips to her throat and tapping softly. Dr. Broom immediately knew that this was not a very good sign, he looked to Abe and without even having to say anything, the aquatic male stepped up to the tank and placed his webbed hand against it softly.
The maiden looked at the blue hand wearily, but the male intrigued her, so with a soft movement, she placed her hand in the outline of his and closed her eyes. Images and noises flooded Abe's head, but the maiden seemed to realize this and reined in, sending and giving the information asked for.
My name, is Ayra.
With this images and memories of Ayra, swimming and singing with a group of others along in the Indian Ocean. Then a different one, of her group traveling with a pod of humpbacks before coming into the Atlantic.
I was traveling with my family, we move often.. before a hurricane hit. I was seperated from them.
She explained with ease, her soft, almost sing-song voice filling his head. Violent waters, howling winds. The hurricane that had occured the other day out in the Atlantic.. He remembered hearing of it. He didn't think much of it until another memory was sent to him again.
Washed upon shore I sang for my family, so that they could find me. A man found me instead. He knew of us, and told me he knew where my family was, in a secret grotto, waiting for me. His only request, was to hear my voice, in song.
Another memory, sitting upon the banks of a shore, in exchange for directions to her family, a song. The memory of her song resounded in his head and he was almost taken aback from it's beauty. He knew mermaids had wonderful singing voices, but he had never imagined this.. He was snapped back to the memory by watching the man get out a ivory tube and murmuring something in Latin; and before Ayra knew what was happening, her voice was gone, and so was the man.
He decieved me. Stole my voice, and left me without my family. A mermaid's voice is a powerful thing, Abraham Sapien. In the wrong hands, it could mean death.
Ayra finished her memory and her hand dropped slowly as she let out a sigh in her tank, wrapping her arms around herself as Abe turned to the professor. "We have a slight problem." he said easily and Dr. Broom stepped forward to hear what he had to say.
"It seems as if Ayra, that is her name, was seperated from her family by that hurricane that occured a few days ago out in the ocean. She was found on shore by a stranger, who claimed to know where her family was. He asked for her to sing in exchange for directions, and he stole her voice." Abe summed up easily, removing his hand from the side of Ayra's traveling tank. Dr. Broom looked deeply worried, and gave a sigh, but John still seemed a bit confused, "Wait, you can steal a mermaid's voice? How?" he asked stepping forward as well, looking between the mermaid and his two counterparts.
"Well, it is possible to steal anyone's voice, with the right container and texts." Abe explained with a nod before continuing, "For a mermaid, you would need an ancient Latin chant, and a container carved from the horn of a Unicorn that was at least one hundred years old." John blinked, and would have questioned it, had he been in any normal situation, but for the time that he had been working there, he learned to believe in crazy stories. "The bad thing is. A mermaid's voice is very powerful and can be used in several different ways.. not very many of them good.. In the wrong hands, as she said, it could be very dangerous." Abe added after a moment, turning to look at the Professor.
Prof. Broom looked to the mermaid Ayra, whom had been watching the conversation between Abe and John closely; she felt his eyes and turned to look at him a moment. "We'll get your voice back dear, don't worry, but we will need your help as well." he reassured her and Ayra gave a firm nod, sending a ripple through her black hair.. Before Prof. Broom could walk to gather a few more books, Ayra gave a frantic wave that caught all of their attention again, although as soon as it did, she looked sheepish and motioned upward, to the top of the tank that held her in, before placed her hands on either side of the tank. Even without Abe, they would have known what she was telling them; The tank was obviously to small for her to be comfortable for a long period, and Ayra was actually hoping that they might let her out.. She wasn't sure how long she had been in there, but she felt like it had been long enough, she wanted to stretch out, and move around, even if it where outside of the tank..
Prof. Broom gave a soft chuckle and looked to John, "Go fetch a towel and a blanket dear boy, and hurry back." he told him and John gave a nod, unsure of what he was going to to, before running of to fetch the desired items. The elder man then looked to Abe, "Do you think you can open the top for us then, Abe?" he asked and the Icthyo Sapien gave him a nod and a "Certainly." before going about the task. Ayra watched the blue creature(of which the likes she had never seen before, even in her treks through the ocean) fetch a stool and bring it about to the side of her tank before stepping up upon it and reaching up to the top of her tank. As soon as he had given it a firm twist, it came free with a hiss and John came back with a towel or two, along with a blanket as soon as Abe had set the top down. With a soft push of her tail, Ayra drifted up and broke the surfact easily, and listened closely for what would come next.. She did not remember how she had been put into the tank, with a small crane and a soft hammock carrier that slipped her into the tube, so she payed attention, wanting to know how she would be removed as well.
"Now, we'll have to do this very gently, we do not want an injured mermaid on our hands, nor do we want an overturned tank." Prof. Broom warned firmly before starting his easy intruction. "John, put the blanket down and place one of those towels upon the floor.. right there at the stool.. that's right." he said as John did as he was instructed. "Now wait with that towel, we'll need to dry her off when she is out." he said, and although John didn't understand, he did obey. "Ayra, Abe is going to lift you until you can sit upon the edge of the glass. Then he will cradle you and pull your fin out as well, do you understand?" he asked the curious mermaid. Ayra nodded and turned toward the blue male at the side of her tank, lifting her arms slightly out of the water; Abe reached in carefully and took under her arms gently, Ayra gripping him back easily in return, watching closely and being careful as not to hinder him. Lifting her slowly, he was careful to shift and set her easily upon the side of the glass within reach; Ayra balanced as best as she could, her long hair sending water droplets down the sides of the tank, as it was still heavy with water.. "That's it Abe, very good." Prof. Broom encouraged as Abe continued, placing one of his arms at her mid back, and the other at the underside of her fin. Ayra placed an arm around his neck(mindful of his gills) and a hand on his chest, letting out a small worried breath, not liking the height that she was from the ground..
"Alright, one, two three." Abe gave the mermaid a warning before lifting her again and pulling her away from the tank, ultimately freeing her tail-fin and leaving her to rest, cradled in his arms. He may have been small in stature, but Abe was strong, or at least, strong enough, and he almost chuckled at the tight hold Ayra had put on him as he had been moving her. Opening her eyes, Ayra blinked as Abe stepped carefully from the stool and onto the towel that had been laid down; her grip on him loosened and she looked around curiously, navy blue eyes blinking before the Professor spoke again. "Alright John, dry off her fin, and be curtious, she is a female." he said with a chuckle as John turned red, but approached none the less. Ayra gave a silent giggle as John quickly and curtiously dried her fin, unsure of why he was doing it in the first place. Stepping back John looked to the elderly man again and Prof. Broom chuckled, "Now give her the blanket, and when she's done Abe, set her on her feet." he said and John, confused again, did as he was told. When he decided to become part of the F.B.I, he had never imagined anything like this, not even after he got used to Hellboy and Abe.
Ayra took the blanket thankfully from the boy called John, and draped it over her waist and hips as the bottom of her fin began to shrink and slowly turn into feet, calves, and from under the blanket, thighs, and hips. When Abe felt soft skin on his arm, instead of small scales, he set her down softly and she quickly finished wrapping the blanket around her form. "There we go, now, that seems to be much better." Prof. Broom said with a smile as Ayra brought all of her damp hair over her shoulder and rang it out over the towel until it no longer dripped. Placing her hands by her side, a look of confusion hit her and she looked down, as if unsure of what to do with her feet; it had been so long since she had walked upon the land, and she could never quite remember right.. She gave Abe a slightly helpless look before looking back to her feet again; "Ah, it seems as if she's trying to remember. It's hard for me too my dear." he said with a chuckle, talking a limp forward with his cane. Without another word, Abe took her arm gently and took a small step forward, obviously meaning for her to follow; she did, and her movements where awkward and she quickly placed a hand upon his shoulder.
Forgive me, it has been too long. Ayra told him mentally, taking a few more jerky steps before starting to slowly get into the swing of it.
Do not worry, everyone forgets the things that they only do every once in a while. Abe replied, and soon enough, both where standing in front of the Professor.
Ayra looked up and gave a slight sheepish smile, watching as John went to retreive the towel from the floor before tossing them both over the stool and turning to look at the group.
"I think it's time for a meeting." Professor Broom said easily with a smile.

Wooow. I was starting to think that it wasn't long enough, but I think it's good for a first chapter. No HB/Liz yet, and not much Abe/Ay, sooo we'll start to work on that laters.
I'm heading off. R&R please, it gets you more chapters.
