“Don’t eat anyone.” One of the males whimpered as he left the cargo hold and caught one of the guards. “I want two guards posted there until I return or state otherwise. NO ONE is to go in there. Am I understood.” The man nodded and four other men were coming down the hall. Riddick disappeared down the hall his thoughts on something else entirely.
He reached his office within minutes and Dame Vaako was there waiting for him. She curtsied briefly before she spoke.
“The woman you brought we are intending to drop her off at port are we not?” Riddick nodded in answer as he opened his door.
“I don’t mean to be presumptuous but don’t we need more members for our travels?” Riddick turned he could smell her now and it disgusted him like most of the woman on this ship now that she was gone.
“Yes but not her she needs to be away from here to go home. If she even knows where that is.” Dame Vaako nodded and walked away.
He trusted no one that was his motto . The last one that he could have trusted gave up her life so that he could live and the only other one that might have gained his trust, gave up her immortality to give it to him and his lover. Which is why he had abstained from any woman. When she explained it to him he almost denied. But when she spoke of his people, he had no words and by the time he did it was too late. Whoever he had in his bed would be immortal and so would he. So he had to choose one and only one. He growled in frustration and turned to his bed. There rested the most annoying of his stalkers.
“Get out.” His words were simple and the same every night.
“You never have anyone come to your bed, you have got to have desires my lord.” He growled and walked to the balcony doors and looked at the starlight space.
“Get out I will not ask you again, next time I will have you removed and fed to the hell hounds.” The woman laughed and it was a sound that grated on his nerves. He turned around and grabbed her by her arm and led her from the room. Her form was barely covered and she looked scared for a moment. Other people watched as he drug her down the stairs to the cargo bay and back to the room where the hounds rested. “You see this door.” She nodded. “Listen woman and listen well I want to be left alone if I desire yours or anyone else’s company I will search for you, if I see you or any of your friends in or around my rooms again I will not hesitate to throw you to these hounds.” He pushed aside his guards and flung the door open and she watched as the lights turned on and revealed a room of hounds. Some of which were fighting each other or resting and then the biggest one stepped up to the door. He had to give the woman credit she didn’t jump only dropped to the floor and repeated sorry over and over again. “Someone get her out of my sight.” He growled and the big hound stepped out of the room as the woman was removed from the cargo bay. “Curious?” The beast looked up at him and he nodded. The creature stepped out of the room smelling one of the guards and to his credit he didn’t move. Riddick shut the door letting the big one out to follow him. Riddick headed down the hall and within moments the clicking of claws confirmed that the hound was right behind him. Riddick was some ways down the hall when he heard the guard release the breath that he had been holding and a smile slipped over his lips.
The next few days slipped by as Riddick fed the hounds and set the course for the planet that had no humans on it. The large hound quickly became his companion keeping most people at bay. Even Dame Vaako gave him a wide circle which he almost smiled about. The planet came into view a few days later and Riddick stared at it and shook his head.
“Search for human life forms ignore any others.” The man nodded and began his search. The hound looked at the planet and then back at Riddick and he dropped to one knee and patted the huge hound on the one side.
“Yes that’s where the feast will begin for you and your kind.” The hound purumped and shook his scales. The people on the bridge had become accustom to the large creature.
“Sir there are ten human life forms.” Riddick’s head shot up and he stood in one fluid movement. “Give me a picture. The man nodded and a hologram appeared, a crashed ship next to a wreckage of a long cargo ship. He could see three people and another two at the entrance.
“Ready one of the battleships.” Everyone looked at each other and when no one confirmed his orders he almost growled. “NOW.” With that beeps went off and people were rushing about.
“Sir will you take anyone with you?” One of his officers asked.
“Yes the guards that were watching the cargo hold.” Vaako stepped back.
“Are you sure that they would be appropriate for this endeavor?” Riddick was focused on the crash.
“Lord Vaako no offense but I saw how you reacted to the hounds. I will be placing most of them on this planet in hope that history never repeats itself.” Vaako did not understand but he nodded knowing that he did not want to be stuck on a ship with thirty hounds.
“Sir the ship is ready.” Riddick nodded and left the bridge with the hound only a few steps behind him.
Cargo Bay 2
“Gentlemen you are going on a trip with me for retrieval and placement.” The guards looked confused but stepped back as they were directed.
“All of these hounds are coming with us ten will be returning and we will have other people on board as well I need you all to show them that they do not need to fear these beasts.” The guards nodded as Riddick opened the door and let a soft whistle loose and the hounds eagerly followed Riddick over to the ship. The largest one calmly observing the younger ones enthusiasm.
“Sir?” Riddick turned and stepped off the ship.
“Yes?” Riddick was taken aback most people called him Lord Marshall these must have been very new to the religion.
“Could you brief us on the circumstances of the situation?” Riddick sat down and looked at the two guards and then another four walked up behind them.
“You were the six that watched over the hounds?” When the self proclaimed leader nodded Riddick continued. “You’re new to the faith maybe barely a year?”
“We’ve all been here under a year, we were among the same ship when we came across this ship they took us without a thought.” Riddick nodded.
“They kept you together?”
“It was our condition we would come willingly as long as we were kept together we are brothers.” The other five nodded in agreement with the first man. Riddick smiled.
“I can see the likeness, I will need men that are reliable and if you have no ties to the political goals of these people here then you are perfect for what I am planning. Get used to the beasts you will be surrounded by them often.” All of the men nodded. “ As far as the planet goes… Its original inhabitants were killed by nocturnal beasts, these creatures only come out when the planet is covered in darkness. According to my calculations it just came out of the darkness so we have some time before it slips into it again. I am giving this to the hounds so that they can populate it hopefully creating a safe balance and allowing humans that crash here to survive.” The guards looked at each other.
“How would they know that the hounds are safe?” Riddick smiled a smile that none could see the glint in his eyes.
“They may not be but that is not the reason I am placing them here.”
“And if anything were to happen to them?” Riddick stood and brushed off his hands.
“Then whoever injured them would have a very pissed off Lord Marshall to deal with.” The men nodded and a few of them realized who he was.
“Lor…”
“Please gentlemen only in court call me by that name or around prominent figures otherwise, sir,” Riddick cringed but continued. “Or Riddick will do.” The men nodded. “I want to get these people off that blasted rock before…” A few scenes from what seemed like a lifetime ago flashed before his closed eyes. “Before they bring unwanted attention to themselves.” The men followed Riddick onto the ship. The ship was originally designed to drop off men in battle but Riddick believed that it would be the best suited to drop off the hounds and bring the humans back up.
“Would you like me to fly sir?” The self proclaimed leader nodded toward the chair and Riddick shook his head.
“The Winds on this planet are unpredictable.” The guard nodded and took a seat next to one of his brothers. The Large hound laid his head on Riddick’s lap and waited for the attention that he knew that he would get. The hound didn’t have to wait long Riddick was scratching behind the scales of his head within moments. The beginning of the trip went quietly only the rumbling of the hounds disturbed the silence. Riddick let his thoughts drift back to the elemental that he now wished he could seek advice from. She sacrificed her life for him and he knew that it changed him. He seemed to fit into society at least a little bit. The animal was still here but he could leash it and pull it back when he wanted or needed to. Maybe that’s all he needed. When faced with eternity it didn’t seem as important to kill as it was before or even exhilarating. Although he had to admit the taste of copper in the blood even now drove his senses crazy to the point where the beast would not be leashed.
“Brace yourself.” The little ship had been bad when they left the planet the first time, this one on the other hand was designed to handle both high winds and extreme fire. It didn’t matter where they entered Riddick knew that the high rough winds were just below the atmosphere they kept the air moving and the planet the wasteland that it was. The only sounds that reached his ears were the occasional scratches of the hounds talons on metal floor and the interspersed curses from the soldiers behind him as the hounds shifted or slipped into the men. Riddick saw the crash and chose to land quite some distance away from them. Wanting to show the survivors that they were not coming to hurt them or at least he hoped that’s what it would show. He stood, the front of the ship faced the side of both of the crashes.
The old one that he had been a part of and the new one that was only maybe a day old if even that. He saw some people walking his way, they didn’t seem to be in a rush Riddick turned to the men.
“These people either did not have a com system because there was no beacon or they wanted to be lost…” Riddick thought for a moment. “Or they are chasing someone who wanted to disappear and they picked the wrong planet for that.” The guards stood and strapped on their weapons, the one closest to the door opened it and slipped out. Riddick motioned for the hounds to stay but the large male followed him, the rest once assured rested quietly no longer interested in moving. Riddick was the last one to descend the ramp he rounded the ship and waited in the shadow of the ship for the two men to reach them. Once they were in hearing distance the leader of the two men yelled his voice pulled with the wind but Riddick heard him very clearly.
“Hail, we are the Survivors of the Cargo Ship Icefalcon.” Riddick nodded to one of his soldiers stepped forward to answer.
“Hail Icefalcon we come on friendly terms.” They waited for the others to reach them before any more conversation was exchanged.
“I am Nick and this is what’s left of my crew James.” Riddick stepped from the shadows and nodded at both of them.
“Richard B. Riddick, Lord Marshell of the Necormonger Faith.” The captains face seemed to pale a bit more as Riddick went on. “Don’t worry things are a bit different now.” The captain seemed to try to visibly relax but it was clear to Riddick if anyone else that the man was still skeptical.
“I am interested to know what brought you to this planet we did not have a homing beacon or sos beacon of any kind.” Riddick knelt down and placed a hand on the hound’s head as it slipped from the shadows and glinted in the sunlight. The man was merely surprised by the hounds presence.
“I have known of this plagued planet for a while and I have come to even the odds.” The men looked around and saw nothing but the expanse of desert.
“There is nothing here.” Riddick almost laughed but pointed at the giant ant hills.
“You’ve noticed those right. And the ship next to the one where you resided. Did you bother to wonder where the people went? Why there is no one here? Desert as far as the eye can see? Well I know why I am the only survivor of that crash.” The captain shook his head. “I know what your thinking but no I did not kill anyone and the only reason I am the single survivor is because after I left with the other two destiny and god seemed cruel enough to kill them both.” The captain raised an eyebrow almost inclined to believe him.
“Okay if you were here then tell me something that only you would know about the crash.” Riddick sighed beginning to get frustrated and the hound growled in answer. Riddick stood and almost growled himself no longer up for this conversation and the direction that it had taken.
“There are graves over there maybe five or six, there is also a sun powered vehicle as well as an encampment a few clicks on the other side of the ships.” The two men looked at each other. “And last of all before you get any idea’s let me give you a little more information on this planet that your stuck on. The planets come in a line for a year or two I am not clear on the time but they plunge this whole planet into a darkness that the creatures emerge and kill everything, including each other.” Riddick paused and let a low whistle out as the hounds slowly emerged from the ship. “Although I am hoping to even the odds a bit.” Riddick couldn’t help the smile that slipped over his lips. The captain took a step back as did his companion. “I should also mention that I have no intention of hurting you or your passengers just to remove them from this planet so things can go properly here.” The captain raised an eyebrow. “Is everyone from your party accounted for?” The captain hesitated for a moment and then shook his head.
“All but one. One of the survivors went looking for supplies she was supposed to return by morning…” Riddick laughed at this.
“But you didn’t realize that there would be no night so hence no morning.” The captain nodded.
“Do you have anything that belonged to her?” The captain looked at James and his voice was strong.
“Maybe back at the Hopper…” James shrugged.
“We will follow you.” Riddick turned and motioned to the hounds nine came forward while the rest rested around the ship and on the ramp. Together the group of nine men and ten hounds walked back to the crashed ships. There were six other people at the hopper. Three more were men and three were woman, the woman were barely more than teenagers and the men didn’t seem to be much older than that. Riddick knew these were mercs and the woman might be someone they were chasing but there were supposed to be ten on the surface only eight were accounted for here. James exited the ship with a shirt. He walked over to Riddick with it in his hands.
“This is all I could find I believe it belonged to her.” Riddick accepted it and looked at his guards. “Help them round up anything they need, I will leave eight of the hounds here for you they should listen well enough.” The self proclaimed leader nodded and turned back to the captain and began to figure out what they actually had room for and what needed to be taken off the ship. Riddick looked back at the two hounds that remained. A small female and the large male that had taken to following him around. Riddick could smell that the shirt belonged to a woman and he didn’t need to take a breath it permeated his skin. He laid it on the ground ant the hounds didn’t need to be told what to do they had been tracking for a long time that’s what they were created for. Riddick felt a kindred with them at peace with them in a way that he had never been with another person. Somehow Riddick wondered if these creatures knew just who he was, his kind and also wondered if perhaps their histories were linked. The large male looked at him and then looked off into the distance. Riddick nodded and the three of them took off toward the ant hills. The female hound took to the lead followed by both Riddick and the male hound. The pace was easy and none of the companions found it hard to keep up for half an hour. The female was the first to slow and stop. For a moment she lost the scent and growl slipped from her mouth and the male stepped to the side picking it up. A moment later Riddick knew why she had lost the scent, burnt ash, Crematoria smell, someone from the prison had ended up here on this damnable rock. Riddick didn’t need to smell them to know that it was probably one of the guards. Kneeling between the two of the hounds he lowered his head and spoke softly.
“The girl is not to be harmed, don’t let her see you kill him.” That was the only direction that he needed to give them. They took off into a cavern that light streamed down the center. This was a different part of the planet that he had not seen. It only took a few moments more before he heard the screaming it echoed unnaturally through the small area. He let a smile flicker across his mouth as he slid around the corner and saw the girl huddled in a corner trying to hold her torn shirt up while the hounds pulled the man away. It was easy to hear the sickening crack as the guard’s neck was snapped and then the sound of ripping flesh. The hounds had been very hungry. Riddick carefully looked over the girl and the closer she held her torn shirt but when she looked at him there was a strangled gasp. Her words came out in a whisper but he did not miss them.
“Furyan. Riddick.” His eyebrow lifted and he stepped closer.
“Do I know you?” Her light brown eyes almost auburn looked back at him her short brown hair matched her eyes. Roddick saw the bruising around her neck and if the guard hadn’t already been dead he would have killed him slowly. The sudden anger caught him by surprise but he pushed the feeling away.
“I have been searching for you. My name is Shirah.” Riddick held out his hand to her and she gracefully took it.
“Come Shirah we need to leave this rock before night falls.” Shirah shook her head.
“I can not go back I was a stowaway. They want me dead.” Riddick laughed and clicked his tongue.
“Don’t be scared the hounds won’t let you be hurt.” The female came around the corner licking the last of the blood from her muzzle and rubbed against Shirah’s leg. The woman looked down not afraid and hesitantly brushed the females head.
“They will shoot me.” Riddick stepped back and watched the male drag what remained of the body further out of sight, Riddick raised an eyebrow. Between the two of them they had already ate the bottom half, leaving a torso and an arm.
“If they want to live and leave this planet alive than they will not do anything to anger me.” Shirah looked at him and Riddick recognized the flight mood in her eyes so he grabbed her arm and slipped his other arm under her legs, before she got a chance. He could feel the exhaustion setting in on her. The captain had lied hoping that Riddick wouldn’t find her. That or if he did he would return her to the Captain’s care. He understood that she was a stowaway and that the man that was chasing her had been hired to bring her back alive but without care if she was unharmed. It was clear that she had only escaped a few hours ago. Shirah did not fight him when he picked her up nor did she fight when they headed back toward the ships. Exhaustion took over and she slipped into a dreamless restless sleep.
The hounds by his side, Riddick walked through the desert enjoying the heat although the sun beat down and he preferred the dark he enjoyed the heat. The male howled into the sky when they neared the ship and a few of the females appeared from around the ship along with two of the guards and the captain. The look on the captain’s face expressed that he did not expect them to find her. Riddick motioned for his leader of the brothers to come forward. He spoke calculated and carefully to the guard.
“Please take her back to the ship and give her some water. Take the female hound, she seems to have taken a liking to her. It would benefit all of us if no harm came to her.” Riddick didn’t miss the look in the captain’s eyes as the guard nodded and took Shirah from Riddick with the female hound right on his heels.
“You found her safe then?” Riddick turned on the man and closed his eyes for a moment not that the man could see that for the goggles that Riddick wore.
“As safe as can be expected for a woman who is chased across the desert.” The captain took a step back and then raised his fist. “If I were you captain I would hold your tongue there are more passengers that you need to worry about then her. Should I find out that you were the one that actually asked him I would have to leave you behind to the fate of the hounds and I doubt that they would have the decency to kill you before they began to feast.” The captain opened his mouth and closed it a couple of times before walking away. James stepped forward and nodded.
“Thank you, I knew she was there, I tried to keep her safe but when we landed one of the crew was injured and she saved them. But even here the captain wished to uphold justice.” Riddick shook his head and crossed his arms. Realizing that this James may have feeling for Shirah.
“Well the problem has been removed from his concern.” James nodded and went back to work sparing a glance for where the woman now was.
It only took the group a few more minutes to figure out what would be moved to the ship and what would remain. Two of the guards had returned to the ship to start loading up so that they could leave as soon as possible. Riddick had checked in on Shirah to find that she was still sleeping and the small violent female hound was resting by her side. The hounds had taken surprisingly well to the guards but especially to Shirah. A part of him was happy about this, it meant that he didn’t have to keep such a close eye on her now. Yet for some reason he found himself inside the ship checking the engine status even though he knew everything was ready. He kept glancing at her unwilling to leave the ship for to long. Aggravated with himself he sighed and stood.
“Sir are we just planning on leaving the hounds?” Riddick stood and walked to the ramp debating again about leaving the hounds here.
“Most of them yes. They tolerate humans but we need the other ones they can listen and interact with humans better.” The guard nodded glancing out over the empty desert.
“Do you think they will thrive here?” Riddick nodded softly and looked around the desert as well.
“Oh yes. They are a strong breed and their scales will make a natural defense against those night creatures and by the time that the night falls they will have at least one cavern to hold up in if not the ship itself.”
“And the pup?” Riddick looked over his shoulder to Shirah and saw the small pup wrapped up in the curve of her knees.
“Will stay with us, won’t be too hard to train especially with the alpha male” Riddick looked over his shoulder as the hound walked towards him and headed down the ramp. “I need to show them how to hunt these creatures before we leave. I won't be long…” Riddick paused and looked at Shirah again. “Don’t let anyone even near the girl.” The guard laughed.
“Yes sir, but I doubt that hound would let anyone get away with laying even a hand on her and if they tried they would lose that hand.” Riddick nodded knowing that that was indeed the truth. Carefully Riddick rounded up the twenty hounds that were to remain. Fourteen Females and six males. It wasn’t a bad number but he hoped he could find other members of their kind and return them here. He started walking toward the aunt hills with the large pack behind him.
