Phasing

Chapter 18: Phasing

Something in Jason’s eyes terrifies me. The child which is Jason is gone, replaced by something I cannot describe. I think to myself that I should be scared, but I’m not. Riddick is also wearing an all too familiar look, the look he gets before the kill. Gently as to not to interrupt him, I reach for Jason’s shoulder. At the touch of him, my body becomes filled with an overpowering energy, a surge of death and life all in one. My body forces itself to let go. My vision goes blurry, I feel exhausted, lihe lhe life has been drained out of me. I try to focus my eyes back on the situation at hand. I feel a gentle hand on my thigh. Jason. I must have lost time.

He’s looking up at me, lament in his eyes, “Sorry Jack. No one is supposed to touch me when I’m phasing.” He looks over to Riddick, who’s looking over to Carmine. Its then I notice the guards on the ground. Their faces are frozen with a look of pure terror. All except Carmine. Jason spared him, or had he?

Riddick gets in Carmine’s face. With his shiv in hand, he whispers something I can’t make out. Carmine’s eye’s lower to the ground and he shuts them tight. Riddick walks up to me, grabbing me with one hand and grabbing Jason with the other. We head for the ship. I turn around one last time to a v a very pissed off Carmine staring back at me.

This is it. The last time I’ll ever step foot on Orson station. After this I’ll be wanted all over the galaxy. The feeling is intoxicating. I realize that Riddick has opened the ramp and we’re stepping on it.
We are leaving... together. Nothing else at the moment matters to me, not my old life, not Carmine, I won’t even miss my stuff. I’m with Riddick, that’s all I need.

The ramp closes shut and Riddick is already in the cockpit, prepping up the ship. I plop down next to him.

He nods his head, “Very Nice indeed. Good choice Jack” he commends. Before I know it we’re on our way to Remora. Once a safe distance away Riddick tells me to keep an eye on Jason who looks exhausted. Riddick disappears to the lower levels of the ship.

I decide to clean one of the rooms and have Jason take a nap. He doesn’t even fight me on it. I find some lounge clothes for him, they fit him, big of ce, be, but he’s more comfortable this way. He even makes a joke about it.

“Jack, look at me. I look like a clown” we both laugh. I can’t believe this is the same boy who just saved us by doing the unexplainable.

I pull the covers back from the bed, “OK, kiddo, get in” he jumps on the bed and lays there looking at me. I stand and turn to leave the room.

His little voice catches my attention, “Thanks, Jack” he says, turning to go to sleep.

“For what?” I ask curiously.

He turns only to look at me, “For all the good memories”. Without another word he goes to sleep.

“Lights off” I leave the room, closing the door.

I head for the eating area of the ship. Its pretty well equipped. I HAD made a good choice. Everything on the ship is very up-to-date. I hadn’t noticed until now, but I’m starving. My guess is Riddick is too.
As I’m preparing a decent meal for the both of us, a loud, metal bang jerks my head up from what I’m doing. Riddick is standing there with grease on his hands and a satisfied look on his face.

“Found it!” he exclaims, pointing to some weird looking device on the metal table.

“A tracking device!” I figure out. He grabs a towel from a cabinet and begins cleaning his hands.

He cocks his head to the side and breaths in deep, “There’s one on every ship”. Throwing the soiled towel to the side, he watches me take out the trays of food.

He sits at the counter as I place both trays of food on the table, “You read my mind,” he says.
I give him a crooked smile and we dig in.

Watching Riddick eat is calming. Just minutes earlier he’d turned into the animal I fear. This beast that lies dormant inside of him, waiting for release.

I’d failed him and Saia. I left Orson empty-handed, not information to help them better understand what’s happening with Jason or Riddick. I look up from my plate to find Riddick staring at me. Undoubtedly he knows what I’m thinking, but we stay silent for the moment. Just for the moment.
