Alien
Chapter 15: Alien
The first face I see is Carmine’s. He’s wearing a huge grin. Any other day I would feel comforted by that smile, but now? I felt betrayed. Can’t let him see that though. I smile back at him and he embraces me in a hug. Deacon shakes his hand and we salute him. The man I’d come to know as a father, is now a complete stranger to me.
“I’m proud of you Nyla.” Carmine says in almost a whisper. I manage a faint smile. He motions for the white coats to take the child. Jason tightens his grip on my hand. Just as quick I place my hand in front of me in a stop position.
“No. If I may Chief, I’d like to take Jason to the laboratory myself.” I look into Carmine’s eyes making sure he took as an ordinary comment.
Nodding to the white coats “Of course Nyla. After the child is safely in his quarter I’d like to see you and Deacon in my office” he walks away and my heart returns to its normal rhythm.
Holding Jason’s hand with Deacon walking on the other side of Jason, we walk to the laboratories. The room he’ll be staying in is pretty big. My face brightens up when I see all the stuffed animals and toys inside the room. Jason runs inside equally enthusiastic. I look at Deacon shrugging my shoulders and shaking my head.
“Oh come on, you didn’t think I was gonna let them keep him in here like an animal did ya?” He smirks and I throw my arms around him, whispering a thank you in his ear.
“Let’s go and see what the boss wants” he says with a worried look.
I nod my head, “I’m right behind ya” I walk over to Jason and kneel down. I’m guessing he doesn’t need to read my mind to know what I want to say to him. “You alright, sport?” he nods, but looks over at the orderlies. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it under control” I wink and stand up facing the white coats. “No tests are to be performed on this child, not until I’m notified, understood?”
“On whose orders?” the orderly defies me.
“Chief Carmine’s orders, that’s who. I’m headed to his office right now, if it’s paperwork you need then I’ll tell Carmine...” I say with my best-distressed look. He interrupts me just then.
“That won’t be necessary Officer. Well contact you if anything needs to be done.” The thought of challenging Carmine’s orders changes his mind quickly.
“Very good” with that I walk out and meet up with Deacon who’s waiting for me outside Carmine’s door.
“Are you ready for this?” he asks me before entering. Whatever awaits us behind that door, I’m ready. Besides it’s too late to turn back now.
“Ready as all ever be,” I say calmly, he nods and opens the door. We step inside in accord. Carmine is standing ~ not a good sign. We salute him and stand.
“At ease, take a seat officers” he commands and we abide. Both Deacon and I wait in a nerve wrecking silence for what seems like forever.
Finally he speaks up, “I trust both of you know how important this child is to us. Both his psychic and telepathic abilities are one of a kind. We need him in order to learn more about their species”
Species? He’s making Jason sound like fucking alien.
“What about the mother then? She had the same gift. Why not take her in as well?” Deacon asks the very same question that’s on my mind. Carmine seems to have anticipated the question, because he answers it without missing a beat.
“Because she was an adult. You see the older the psyche becomes the harder it is to train that skill. She already had her way of using it, with Jasonwillwill be able to help him develop his gift into something more useful”
You mean you can manipulate him easier. At least now I know why the urgency to have Jason captive, but just a few more questions.
“Sir, if I may ask. Ryan, the man we just executed, was he indeed Riddick’s kin?” I ask looking very crnedrned and worried. Lie to me, you double-crossing bastard, I think inside my head.
