Jeffrey "Colt" Douglas was in heaven. He and his friend Troy were playing basketball at the public court, and he's well in a lead with the score. But that wasn't what was brightening his mood. It was her. Geri Simmons. A girl too perfect for him for words. And it wasn't for her beauty - - not that the crimped, brunette-red Bob that one could smell all day until didn't excite him during their brief passing moments in the halls at school, nor was it the big hazel eyes that could make her appear innocent like a cute stuffed rabbit then fierce like a wild puma, as he'd seen when the boys and girls played dodgeball together that one time in gym class. And, ok, his typical male side very much appreciates her physique. It's flawless.
No. Geri has something most girls his age tend to lack. A sporty side. She climbs trees. She talks trash when playing the field or court. Her baseball skills are admirable. And he was more than happy to hear her voice behind him, cheering him on during dodgeball while pointing out danger. She wouldn't giggle and shriek while hiding behind him, as the other girls had.
And he's not a stranger to her, they've known each other for a year and a half. He can legitimately hit on her. There is no 'stalked by stranger' incident waiting to happen. Alas… Any time he wants to move beyond the 'friend zone', he goes all Rocky vs Emily on her! He cannot get into that headspace. If he does, then, he's screwed.
Not that he has an ego - - well… Not a repulsive ego, but, Colt was used to girls hitting on him. He can either accept or decline. When he's the one in the driver's seat… Well.. Look what happened with Jo. He could have lost her to the suddenly extroverted-in-love Rocky. Not cool. Thankfully, Rocky has no interest in most girls that he does. Jo was a one time thing between them. And… he's getting off track.
"Hey! Focus!" Troy called.
Colt blinked from the booming voice. "Yeah," he replied halfheartedly.
Troy has grown a lot since their middle school years. He's now a good 5'11 and growing in his high school years. Colt grew a bit, but he was outshined by Troy in this Sophomore year. At least now the guy's onboard with who could kick who's butt in a fight. Bruce Lee all the way. Tch. Schwarzenegger… get real.
Head back in the game, he kept the lead, winning 45 to 22.
"Guys! Drinks?!" Geri called out. She held up a plastic bag with a logo from the gas station store.
Colt, sweaty and grateful for relief, took note of how he'd been so distracted by her in his head that he hadn't noticed when she'd left to buy the offer of relief. He rummaged through the bag and extracted a bottle of water. He would have taken a soda, but the only options were Pepsi and Sprite. He prefers Coke and 7Up.
"Did you see my three from across the court?" He asked-boasted to his crush.
"I did. Was it a fluke, or practice?"
"Hey, I don't get lucky. I put the work in." He'd of gone with a brag, but his grandfather informed him in his middle school years that hard work is it's own brag. No statements necessary.
"Cool." She grinned, looking all the more effortlessly pretty in Colt's eyes. "I like a guy who can say that. It's rare."
'You're rare.' He put on his best smile. Always bring out the dimples. His own mother couldn't resist pinching his cheeks when she caved to their powerful force. Geri glanced, but seemed otherwise unfazed. Shoot. Plan B. "Did any of you see that new Spider-Man?" It was a topic of interest they could build on in any direction of genre.
"Yup. Miles was better." Troy stated.
Colt nudged his friend. "I haven't. So no spoilers,"
With a grin of mischief, the ninja's best friend said. "Spoiler alert, Zandaya's in it."
Colt gave Troy a dry expression, as he was not amused.
"And," he snapped his fingers. "Tom Holland, is still Spidey."
"I get it!" He shoved him playfully. "Idiot."
Geri and her friend Amy snickered at their antics.
"Did you see it?" Colt asked his crush.
"Not yet."
See. Sporty. Most girls would ask if he was kidding or something, because why would they wanna see an action film. Ok. To be fair, they would see it, just as long as Hemsworth was in it. And he doesn't consider his girlfriend candidates shrieking with glee over a movie star any kind of date to be excited over.
"Wanna go with me?"
Troy took the hint, and started away but not before coaxing Amy along with him. Not an easy task when the lure was a close up of a perfect lay-up shot. But she got the picture when Colt's wingman threw her a suggestive look, to give the pair some space.
"Sure. I hope next Friday is cool, 'cause I don't get paid until then."
Colt shook his head. "No problem, I'll pay. I invited you, right? It makes sense that I'd pay."
Geri smiled. She played with the chipped nail polish on her thumb, widening the exposure. "I don't know. Kinda sounds like a date if you're the only one paying."
"Would that be so bad?"
Brow furrowed, she asked. "What scenario? Us dating or people thinking that we are?"
Colt swallowed a dry lump in his throat, he then wet his bottom lip by giving it a quick swipe with his tongue. It didn't help at all. "You know what?" He said when those big brown eyes rested upon his own gaze. "We can hold out until next Friday. I can wait."
"Alright. Will you pick me up, or meet me there?"
'I am trying to pick you up.' The ninja paused, that kinda sounded wrong. But, he knew what he'd meant. "I'll pick you up."
"Great! It's a date." She confirmed. "A date set on the calender, not a date-date."
"Right." Colt joked along with her light teasing. 'Because that would make too much sense, a guy and girl going out on a Friday night to see a movie. Complete friend activity, no one would ever think to do a thing like that for a date.' He released a defeated sigh.
"Something wrong?" Geri asked when his grief took her attention from their friends.
"What? With me? No." He answered to quickly.
"I'm gonna head home. Taco night, and I have chopping to do." She stood from her seat on the wood bench. "Later." She said to Colt, then looking past him to the others shouted. "Bye, you guys!"
The trio bid her their farewells. Colt could only stand in place, staring after her. "Hey, I'm bailing, too." He informed Troy and Amy. "See you at school."
Life can be so cruel. What makes a person nervous anyway? He can talk to anyone at anytime, he has the gift of gab. So, what's this latent shy guy routine about? He stuffed his hands into his pockets, head low, when he wandered home. He was gonna freak out if he turned into a wuss at sixteen. His best years can't be behind him already. How was that fair?! At least let him have his youth while it can be wild and fantastic. He can be selfconcious when he's in his thirties.
Colt walked into his house and headed straight for the kitchen. He slipped into the walk-in pantry to retrieve and well-hidden Tulip shaped snack-cake. It was near impossible to eat anything other than fruit when a Tum Tum exists in the Douglas home. He eats like he's got dibs on everything delicious and non nutritious. Candy, cakes, cookies, etc all bought for him. Not a true thing, but outsiders would have a hard time believing otherwise.
He took his possession up to their bedroom to eat. Tum Tum is at his friend's house, so there won't be an interception.
"Hey," he greeted Rocky when seeing the zombie in front of the television playing a video game. Colt pulled the wrapper from the yellow frosted flower shaped cake, and pulled it apart. He licked out the cream center, and watched his brother play some fighting game. Once the filling was extracted Colt put the cake ends back together then ate it. "Rocky, let me ask you something - - and .I want a serious answer."
"Kinda busy." Moaned the zombie.
"Can't you pause it?"
"It's sudden dea..." He set down the controller. "Nevermind. What is it?" He turned to address his brother, may as well since his distracting chit-chat just cost him his personal best score of instant kills.
"I like this girl, right? But, it feels like more than that."
"Colt, it's up to her whether or not you sleep together. And for all our sake, if she agrees to it, wear protection."
Colt furrowed his brows. "I'm not talking about sex, I'm asking how do you know if it's more than a crush."
"What? Like you wanna marry her?"
Colt paled. "Not quite there yet. It's more of a... I think she's more than someone I date from time to time." He stared thoughtfully at the pastry in his hand. "How do you know if a girl is someone you love?"
Rocky was visibly surprised by that question. He even abandoned his post at the television to sit on his bed, a little closer to the strange creature posing as Colt. "And you're sure this isn't about sex?"
"Positive."
Rocky nodded. "So, you finally found your 'It' girl? I'm shocked, I thought you'd be forty."
"Ha ha." He rolled his eyes.
"All seriousness, you know when there isn't anyone else who can shake your attention from them." Replied his brother, now sober from teasing him. "It feels like you don't have to pretend to not notice other girls. In your eyes, your heart, your head, there's only that one person."
Colt nodded. Then his mind wandered over all the girls he's dated casually and semi-seriously. And each one vanished in a puff of smoke, replaced by Geri Simmons. She was his Cover Girl.
"Whoa..." Rocky marvelled. "You're even smiling just thinking about her, aren't you?" He had to meet this girl. She must make a ten look like roadkill. The dragged kind. "You got a photo?"
"Not for you to see. At least not until I've sealed the deal of us being an us."
Rocky chuckled. "You haven't even asked her out? How can you be this into her without even removing the dream girl barrier?"
"I'm working on it." Colt brushed the crumbs from his lap onto the floor, he shrugged when his brother shot him a belligerent glare. "I'll vacuum later." He ignored the scoff. "I get tongue tied around her when I wanna ask her out. Any other time we're good at just talking to each other. We're friends."
"Well, if you're that tongue tied, maybe it's the gods telling you to stay as friends. Why wreck a good thing?"
"Because it's not enough anymore."
Rocky was impressed, and a bit worried that the guy he's speaking to really is a pod person. Colt was a serial dater. He doesn't get serious with girls and they don't get serious with him. They almost gravitated to each other. It was beneficial for those who live that way to stay in their lane. "What if she turns you down? Sometimes your serious isn't there yet."
"She has to be." He leaned so his back rest against the bed frame. "What if I wait, then she ends up being with some loser and decides he's the one?"
Rocky could see that fear. It's possible. "But, if you start off all 'I love you' serious, she might think you're a freak.."
Colt gave a wink and gun in response that the message was received. 'No crazy stalker vibe. Got it.'
Rocky seemed done with the conversation, because he was headed back towards the television. "So, when are you gonna see her for a date?"
Colt felt an unsettling air roaming their bedroom. It said: "Snoop!" In a scream. "Sunday.. this Sunday. We're going to see Spider-Man."
"Oh." He'd lost interest.
Colt was glad for that about Rocky. He's a DC fan all the way. He may watch some Marvel movies, but he's not gonna jump at the chance. Especially after they swapped Andrew for Tom. Colt doesn't care who plays the part, he just likes Spider-Man movies. And so does Geri.
"Wanna play?" Rocky asked, he held out the other controller.
"Uhhh, what is that again?"
"Soul Calibur."
"Mortal Kombat is easier." He hopped down from his bed.
"So?" He wiggled the controller back and forth to entice. "You can't go through life on an uppercut, sometimes you've gotta battle with more style."
"And that's why you won't ever get your dream girl." He squeezed his brother's shoulder. "You wanna tip-toe around. But I wanna knock them out."
"Can't do that, if you're scared to make a move." He shrugged.
Colt backed off, knowing that Rocky was right. He's known her all this time, but she still messes with his senses! He should have been asked her out when she first came to school. He stupidly befriended her first. Maybe it had something to do with the other guys. They teased her, and whispered about her. He was worried he'd be caught in the fray. But, after a couple months the pick-on-the-new-kid wore off, and everyone was onboard with friendship. Luckily Colt never saw or heard rumors about her dating anyone. He could guess the sting of rejection was still with her, and she turned down suitors.
Having not been a part of the idiocy, he figured he has a pretty good shot.
...
It was late in the hours. Colt was in the downstairs bathroom having some private time with his thoughts. It was all Rocky's fault. He hadn't been thinking about rounding the bases until he'd brought it up. Colt was just satisfied with having her by his side. Letting all the world know that they belonged to each other. But, now he's here in the first floor bathroom.
Times like this he's glad there is a lower sanctuary. If he used the en-suite in their bedroom, he'd risk being heard or worse, caught during a stifled silence. In his haste he might have skipped locking the door. One never knows.
Once he'd finished and cleaned himself up, he returned to his bedroom. He cleared all thoughts of Geri after that. He doesn't need a round 2, and he doesn't need to be up all night. He has school tomorrow. If he's groggy there's no telling what his body would do on accident. Must stay pure in her eyes.
Colt, despite his reprimand to sleep, remained awake. He was currently wondering what type of guy does Geri like? What would attract her? From what he knows, she's not fond of uncertainty. She wants a man who'll just say it. She must does, because she shot him down quick while he was pulling a Rocky on her.
He smiled, and almost released a snicker. His brother would pop him good, if he knew he was a failed scenario. He's not always like that, too. Rocky can go after what he wants, but sometimes there are certain people that just screw with your heart. And you can't speak.
Colt rolled over. Rocky was right. Geri is a love. Since meeting her, he hasn't really thought about anyone else. He'd certainly never done what he just did downstairs over any other girl.
'Geri Simmons... Look what you've done to me.' He thought with a happy smile in place.
Tomorrow for sure. He's going to properly ask her out to see that movie.

Colt was let down. He didn't see Geri at school. He thought she might come at the halfway point, but he'd gone the whole day on a visual dry-spell. He wondered what happened? Did she get sick over the past few hours from the basketball court to home. It was possible, bugs are tricky like that.
He sought out Amy, and found her on her way to the bus.
"Hey! Amy?" He hurried to catch up to her. "Ame, do you know what happened Geri? Is she sick?"
Amy scoffed. "Lately, when is she not sick?" She gestured towards the buses, as if to say: if that's all, bye.
"Well, is she in the hospital? How long has this been going on?"
"Umm, it's not my business to tell. It just sounds like gossip. So..." She shrugged.
Colt stared after her departure. Annoyed at how best friends could be sometimes. Loyalty has it's faults when you're someone looking for information. 'Maybe I should go see her? It might score some points for me in the boyfriend department. Nothing shows you're loving like being caring.'
Rocky passed by his brother, he gave him a rough swat the back of his head. "Planning to walk home? Come on." He headed for his car.
Colt just realized another advantage of a brother who has his license and a car. "Hey, Rock', drop me off somewhere."
Rocky agreed to it, mostly because he's intrigued. Colt usually wants to get home, get something to eat, then vanish most days. He, Rocky, is usually the one wanting to detour. That must mean Colt might be going to see that mystery girl. How could he refuse?
The Douglas brothers climbed into the Forester Touring, Subaru then departed for Colt's destination.

Commentary: This would not get out of my head. So, I'm gonna put it out there. It'll most likely be short. Hopefully good since I'm flying by the seat here. I have two scenes that play out over and over, the rest I'm just gonna fill in the best I can. Hope you enjoy it. And happy New Year.
And woohoo! HBO MAX has Knuckle Up. I love you HBO. But I'd love it more if it was the director's cut.
