Tonight, she met her friends at the bar. They ordered drinks chatting about whatever came to mind. Tomorrow, was her day off from work, so she could unwind. Her long dark hair was pulled back into a pony tail. She was dressed in nice jeans and a black shirt. The things her friends would talk about were the same things. It was either work, men, or how stressful their lives were. Her family lived in another state. It was cold where they lived. Moving somewhere warm was something she always wanted to do.
There was a man at the bar sipping his beer dressed in a black leather jacket and jeans. He had a shaved head and an outline of a beard. She got up to get another drink from the bartender. He glanced over at her briefly. "Hi." She tried talking to him. He seemed less enthused that she spoke to him. Finally, the bartender moved over to her. Asking for another beer, the bartender got one out pouring it in a glass.
"You new around here?" This was another attempt to try to make conversation. Setting his drink down, he turned to look at her.
"No, not really," He answered her with a British accent. His tone was calm. It reminded her of when she went to school in England for a couple of years. She traveled a lot through her child hood and teen years. Her dad was in the military. He knew some of the men in the British military. Eventually, he retired settling in Texas.
"Got a name?" she asked. The way he looked at her didn't seem like he was up for conversation.
"Do you?" She only assumed that she was starting to bother him. This guy acted like he wanted to be left alone.
"I'm Anna, sorry to bother you." She walked away leaving him there. He looked back at her watching her go to the table with her drink. Anna briefly glanced back at him noticing him making eye contact with her. Trying to avoid him, she turned her attention towards her friends.
A few hours had past. It was starting to get late. The man she tried talking to was still sitting at the bar. She paid the bartender and left. Her car wasn't parked too far away. It was parked on the side of the street about a block a way. There were footsteps coming her way. Going through her purse, there was no sign of her keys. The man from the bar came up to her. "These must be yours."
"Thanks so much. I was starting to worry." He nodded at her leaving. Anna got into her car heading home. She lived in an apartment not too far away from the bar. There was a parking garage that she parked her car in. Then an elevator took her up to her floor. She unlocked the door walking in. The place had a lot of space. It was a two bedroom. Everything in it was very modern. It had large windows looking out into the city. The view was amazing when the sun set.
She had only worked for the police department for six months. It was a lot of hours, but things were starting to slow down a little. Hopefully, they would cut hours some seeing it was tiring. She got herself ready for bed. It didn't take her too long as she got into the covers quickly drifting off to sleep.
Night time seem to go quickly. It was already morning. Today was the day to catch up on laundry or anything else. Anna got herself together for the day. She dropped off her dry cleaning along with running errands. Sometimes, she would walk knowing she wasn't too far from everything.
There was a coffee shop near by. As she started heading there, police cars were everywhere. "Miss you may want to step away." she saw the man come up to her. He was very tall and built carrying a gun.
"Everything ok?" she asked him.
"There's been a lot of shooting going on around here. Cops are going to start getting heavy around here," he explained. His tone was serious. She recognized his name on his badge.
"Agent Hobbs, nice to meet you. Too bad it's not on better terms." He stopped a moment looking at her folding his arms.
"You are?"
"I'm Anna, I work in the lab at the police station. I've heard so much about you. I was suppose to meet you, but you were out of town for a few days," She explained.
"Nice to meet you. I heard they were hiring someone new," he replied. He left her standing there. She figured he had to get back to work. Looking above the building, men were on the top holding guns. Her cell rang seeing work calling her. She answered it talking to them. They needed her to come in. Anna quickly made it back getting into her car heading into the office. Sometimes, her job required her to leave to take samples at the scene of the crime. Instead, there was a small pile on her desk.
Everything along with these files were bags of evidence. They were marked with what folder they went with. Each day was a little different depending on what they had her do. Hobbs came into the lab seeing her working.
'Looks like you will be seeing more of me. You've been switched to work with my stuff mostly. She handed him a file with a small bag in it already finished. He took it from her looking through it.
"Hope it's all you need." As he went through it everything was written in detail giving him everything he needed to know.
"You're good. I like the detail. The last one didn't leave as much. Good work," he said complimenting her. He left the lab, so she could finish up. Tonight, would be another late night. It was something she was use to. Coffee ended up being a necessity to keep her awake. A guy with short brown hair and blue eyes came in. She turned to look at him. He was very attractive looking. "You must be the new girl." he said approaching her.
"Yeah, i'm Anna. Nice to meet you," She shook his hand. He handed her a folder on a case he was working on with a gun in the bag.
"I need you to get their fingerprints. I'm Christian by the way." He stood there watching her a moment. She hated when people would look over her shoulder giving her an unpleasant feeling.
"I'll call you when i'm done. I don't like people looking over my shoulder." He smiled at her getting the idea to leave the room. It didn't take her long getting it done promptly. She was good at her job making sure no one would be waiting forever.
Anna took the paperwork along with some of the evidence in a bag to Hobbs desk. He looked up at her as she came in. "You don't waste any time do you?" He asked her.
"No not really. So who is staying with me tonight?" She sat in the chair in front of him.
"I am." He looked a file going through it. There was a file sticking out that in a stack that said Shaw on it. The last name sounded familiar. "Who's this?" Anna picked up the file looking at it.
"Owen Shaw. They make it difficult for us to catch," Hobbs answered.
"The name sounds so familiar. My family lived close to a military base. My dad knew some of the British military. He use to take me my junior and senior year of high school with him on my days off. I met quite a few of them." She said trying to remember, still nothing seemed to ring any bells.
"He's the younger brother. We've been having a difficult time catching both of them." She set the file back on his desk. Hobbs watched her. It wasn't very often that a woman would get his attention. He separated his personal life from his work life. Relationships weren't easy for him due to his long hours. It was hard for him to just trust anyone. Hobbs wasn't the type to just open up to anyone. She noticed the picture of the little girl at his desk. "She's cute," Anna said looking at the picture.
"That's my daughter. I see her when I can." He picked it up a moment looking at it. Then set the picture back down.
"Hey," Christian said coming into the room.
"I guess you two met." Hobbs spoke. Christian nodded handing papers to Hobbs. He took a look at it.
"What's this?"
"We have a list of stolen military weapons, cars, you name it. Maybe, we'll get some luck on catching Shaw." Hobbs snickered at that a little. Anna got up heading back to the lab leaving them alone.
The day seemed to drag on. She was starting to get a little anxious. It was almost lunch time. There was only one hour to spare. It allowed her enough time to eat and make it back on time.
