My precious gift
Chapter 1 PresentsFour long years had passed, but the memory was fresh in her mind. Hoggle, Sir Didimus, and Ludo visited her frequently, and always seemed to raise her spirits when she was down. After solving the labyrinth, Sarah decided to be much nicer to her family, doing anything she could to make them smile, Toby grew to love her more and more each day, looking up to her like a real hero. It wasn’t until the day of her 18th birthday, that Toby showed any signs of knowing anything about the underworld. It was 4:15am on the morning of her birthday, Sarah was fast asleep when Toby burst into her room and flung himself on her bed, holding her tightly as she struggled to get a grip on the waking world. “Toby! What’s wrong? Did something happen? Are you ok?” Sarah patted Toby’s back and held him close to her. “Sarah, please don’t go back to that place, I want you to stay here with me!” Sarah pulled Toby up to sit on her lap, as she sat up. She looked over at her young brother, tilting her head to the side to examine his face as he sobbed and hiccupped uncontrollably. “What do you mean that place? Did you have a nightmare?” Toby shook his head and wiped at his eyes. “Sarah, you can’t go back…I will never see you again.” That was all Sarah could get him to say, before he fell asleep in her arms. She looked at the alarm clock at her bedside and sighed. Happy birthday to me…Sarah laid Toby next to her on her bed and covered him up before laying back down herself. She felt exhausted suddenly. Looking over to her vanity she caught the eyes of her mother, staring out at her in a picture. It was the only picture she had of her and her mother, Sarah had to have been around 3 years old. Her mother was beautiful, the most beautiful woman she had ever seen, Her lithe frame, long raven hair, her skin looked porcelain and creamy like milk. Occasionally Sarah would get a card or present from her mother on her birthday, but never a return address or visit. Sarah knew her mother was alive, but never knew where to start looking, it was as if on her 3rd birthday, her mother just vanished into thin air, the gifts and cards never left any clues, the only thing her mother would write was the same every year…”My beloved daughter, another year you age. Another year you grow more beautiful and intelligent, and another year I am closer to being with you once more. Until we meet again, my beautiful princess. Love, Mom.” Sarah never knew what she meant by saying they would be together again. Her mother sent her plays, and fairy tales that littered her room, and had even been the one to send her “The Labyrinth.” Which made Sarah’s imagination grow vivid. Even if Helen hadn’t been there to raise Sarah, she had everything to do with the way Sarah was today, and Sarah thanked her for that. “Goodnight mom…” She smiled sweetly and closed her eyes, drifting back to sleep.
That was a year ago, and Toby had no recollection of it when he woke up hours later, wondering why he was in Sarah’s bed. She tried to press him for more information, but he ended up telling her she was mean and didn’t talk to her for the rest of the day. Sarah was 19 today, and had looked forward to plans she had made with her human friends. They planned to go to a renaissance fare to celebrate her birthday, and love for all things magical. It took Sarah weeks to make her costume; she would be dressed as a princess. She stood in her room wearing a dingy bathrobe, staring at the beautiful gown that was neatly placed over a dress form. She admired her handy work as she went over the beautiful and ornate design of the gown. It was white, heavy and full, with beautiful gold embroidery at the hems and low bust. The top was corseted, with thick straps that hung low with beading. When on, the straps fell over her shoulders and hung delicately on her arm. She decided to wear her hair in an elegant up do, full of curls hanging down to the middle of her back, a simple gold chain around her neck, with a small emerald dangling just above her cleavage finished the look perfectly. She smiled softly, touching the small necklace, Her father gave her the necklace on her 16th birthday, it was her mothers, and she made him promise to give it to her when she was ready. Sarah dressed slowly; she still had an hour before her friends would be there, giving her enough time to apply her makeup and slip on her silk flats. She admired herself in the mirror, all her life, her friends and family told her how strangely beautiful she was, but in her eyes, she was just a normal girl. She was Sarah Williams, creamy skin, green eyes, long wavy black hair, and a full figure attached to a tiny waist. Nothing special. So she thought. Tiffany burst through the door of Sarah’s bedroom, followed by Rachel, and Kat. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRAT!” Tiffany chanted before slinging herself at Sarah to embrace her. Tiffany, being the spitfire of the group was dressed as a fairy. Rachel dressed as wizard, and Kat was a barbarian, they were a strange group indeed. “Happy birthday Sarah! We got something for you. “Rachel sweetly approached Sarah, holding something behind her back. “We knew you would love this, so we all pitched in and got it for you.” Kat said as she stepped up and hugged Sarah’s tiny waist. Rachel held out a box that was wrapped in brown paper and Sarah took it gently and looked up to her friends. “You guys didn’t have to get me anything! Taking me to the fare was enough of a gift as it is!” Tiffany snorted and threw her hands up over her head. “For the love of GOD woman! OPEN IT!” She chuckled and started to tare at the paper until the box bare and than preceded to open it slowly, not sure what to expect. When she looked into the box she smiled and held a hand to her mouth, almost of the verge of tears. “You guys…” Rachel reached into the box and pulled out the small gold tiara littered with tiny green gems and placed it on to Sarah’s head. “There, now you are a true princess.” All the girls bowed their heads, and a moment later the room erupted into laughter. “Alright you sentimental sobs, lets go or we wont be able to park.” The girls made their way to Tiffany’s car and piled in, Sarah sitting up front. “This is gonna be the best birthday ever…” Sarah said as the girls took off.The girls made it to the fare without incident, except for a few explosions of road rage from Tiffany. They all got out of the car and made their way to the front, where they purchased their tickets and headed into the gate. The girls spent hours looking around, and doing one thing that each girl wanted to do. It wasn’t until it was starting to get dark when the girls started to disagree on what to do next, each wanting to do different things, Sarah sighed softly and held her hand up to silence the arguing. “As your princess, I say that we all go our separate ways, and meet back here in one hour and go home. Its only logical.” The group agreed and parted to go their separate ways. Sarah looked around for a moment when something caught her attention from the corner of her eye, something was glowing, but when she turned to look. It was gone. Curious she started to walk in the direction she saw the light, but nothing seemed to be glowing. Giving up, she turned around to head back the way she came to make it to the sward fight, when she saw a fortune telling tent that she hadn’t noticed before. She weighed her options, and decided to appease the curiosity in her mind, and stepped in, moving the beaded door out of her way. She looked around and saw that the tent looked to made out of velvet, but it was cool in there, like it had some sort of air conditioning on, but couldn’t locate its ware bouts. There was another walkway that leads to a hallway leading to another room. It was starting to confuse her more and more; the tent didn’t look this big from the outside. She moved on and went to the frame of the next room, not wanting to intrude she stopped just short of the door. “Hello…?” “Yes, yes. Come in! Come in dear, I have been expecting you!” Right…Sarah rolled her eyes and started to walk in. “Oh, don’t believe me do ya?” Said the thick English accent, coming from what sounded like an old woman. “Well you ought to, I know everything about you Sarah Williams.” Sarah stopped dead in her tracks. “H-how do you know my name…?” The woman chuckled. “Come in, don’t be scared. It’s my job to know.” Hesitantly, Sarah stepped through the doorframe, it was colder in this room. “Come! Sit down, we have much to go over!” Sarah looked around the huge room, pillows lined the walls, and beautiful ornate carpets were staggered over the dirt floor. A huge heavy looking oak table sat in the middle of the room, an empty chair sat at one end, and a large cushioned chair, with an old woman, with one eye sat at the head of the table. “Sit, we haven’t much time.” Sarah took a seat and stared at the old woman before her. She was wearing a large royal blue cloak, her old frail hands were sticking out of arm holes in the side of the cloak, holding one small crystal ball, she juggled it back and forth on her hand, much like Jereth had done, making Sarah pay close attention to the woman in front of her. The woman’s face was old, her skin was pale, and her hair was as white as snow. The woman had a beautiful blue scarf covering her left eye; her working eye was a vibrant blue as the scarf and cloak. “Now deary, you want to know about your mother, yes?” Sarah tensed up in her seat, she felt cold all of a sudden, yet she could feel the clammy sweat start to form on her skin, layer after layer. “Who are you?” Sarah choked on the words as they left her lips. “Most people all me Gina, but by birth I am Eugenia.” She woman bowed her head slightly. “I seem to have run out of time, so instead of a talk, I have a gift.” The crystal ball left Gina’s finger tips and slowly rolled down the table to Sarah, where it landed softly in her lap. “Is this some sort of trick?” Sarah was afraid to touch the ball. She knew something was wrong. “You want to know about your mother? There it is, all you have to do and take it.” The woman smiled. Sarah’s emotions were buzzing a million miles a minute; she didn’t know how to feel. All her life, since she was 3 years old, all she ever wanted in her life, every single birthday wish could be answered, and yet she knew the price, she knew where she would go if she took this gift. She knew her life was about to change, but for better, or for worse? “..What does this have to do with my mother?” The woman’s smile grew wider. “Why Sarah, you of all people know…That nothing is ever as it seems.” Gina chuckled and Sarah looked down to the crystal in her lap. Her hand seemed to be working on its own as it grew near the crystal, every bit of her heart was screaming for her to take the crystal. And she did.
