Gus Gilbert. 34 years old and the local Sheriff of Ludlow, Maine.Also, married to a young mom, Amanda, who has two 14 year old twins. A son, Drew and daughter, Andrea. Gus, adopted the fatherless children, cause he couldn’t bare children of is own, or so he was told.
Now, it is Summer and Drew and Andrew are 14 and maturing physically. Gus, remembers them, when he adopted them at 10, now they are both in 8th grade.
Drew, is physically overweight, but doesn’t care, no matter many times, his stepfather, calls on him for being fat or eating too much. Andrea, however, was not overweight. She has long brown hair and is as skinny as her mom.
As Amanda, is busy making dinner in the kitchen, Gus had just gotten home, from a long shift at the station, and plops down on the couch, with a can of open beer, Drew sitting and watching TV from the table, and Andrea sitting beside Gus, watching TV. Gus, looks over at Andrea, and gives her a stern look.
Gus: Andrea, your mother, is bustin’ her ass in that kitchen, preparing us all a meal. Why don’t you, show some respect, and help your mother.
Andrea: But, mom doesn’t mind.
Gus: Andrea, I don’t care what she says. You’re a woman and you should be helping your mother in the kichen.
Andrea: Ugh! But Drew is watching TV at the table again.
Gus: I’ll get to that, don’t you worry.
As Andrea, got up to pass by her stepfather, he deliberately slaps her across the ass, like a sexist pig. Andrea, took the hit, and goes into the kitchen anyways. Drew, saw this, but hesitated to stand up for his sister. He didn’t want, to make things bad, between him and his abusive stepfather.
Andrea: Mom, do you need any help?
Amanda: Yeah, you can help set the table.
As Andrea and Amanda set the table, and place the food, Gus comes in and joins the family for dinner. Gus, sighs, cause he’s told Drew, many times, about watching TV at the dinner table.
Gus: Drew, turn the TV off. We’re about, to eat a home cooked meal and it’s rude.
Drew; But, mom doesn’t mind.
Gus: Yeah, I’m getting real fed up, about how you and your sister, walk all over your mother, like that. Well, that’s going to stop. You two, need to start showing, a lot more appreciation.
Drew sighs and turns off the TV with the remote.
Gus: Amanda, you’re so quiet.
Amanda: Well, there is nothing to talk about. Openly, I mean.
Gus: In the meantime, we should talk about something else. For instance, what are we all, gonna do this summer, besides sitting on our asses?
Drew: Well, I’m gonna hang out with my friends.
Andrea: I, actually, have nothing planned.
Gus: Andrea, there are plenty of chores around the house.
Andrea: Yes, dad.
Gus: Good, now after dinner, you start with doing the dishes. It’s the least you can do since your mother made dinner. Drew, you can take out the trash.
Drew: Yes, father. Afterwards, can we let Zowie in for the night?
Gus: You know the law. Your dog, not allowed inside, after dark.
