Christian didn't know Elias from Adam, but something made him vehemently angry watching Sofus go after him in the schoolyard. He walked past the crowd that had gathered to watch Elias's humiliation and though he wanted to jump Sofus right then and there, he thought it best to plan his revenge more carefully. Sofus was one of those guys who had probably been held back a year or two and thus had age, height and weight on every other guy in class. He threw this weight around liberally, intimidating the other students and creating a set of weak-minded minions to back him up. As with any toadie, the philosophy was "better him than me." That's how it was at school when Christian enrolled. It wasn't until his first official class that he found himself seated next to Elias, the obvious whipping boy of the other students. Elias was meek and soft spoken with a ready smile that displayed his retainer. It was this simple dental appliance that had caused him so much grief at school due to his ignorant classmates, though Christian hadn't even noticed it until it was pointed out to him by none other than Sofus himself later that day. He'd also learned offhand that Elias's father was Swedish; this fact was not accepted well by the patriotic Danes who filled 95% of the school. Christian could not have cared less about Elias's parentage as he had enough things to think about having just moved back to Denmark after his mother's death. He preferred to keep to himself, but Sofus's behavior could not be allowed to continue. Even though it might paint him a troublemaker, Christian knew he had to take action. On his 3rd day of school, Christian again witnessed the bullying in the schoolyard and this time, when Sofus followed Elias into the boy's washroom, he followed them. Without even thinking, he pulled out the bicycle pump from his knapsack and began assaulting Sofus with all he was worth. He was prepared this time to drive his point home and produced a knife which he held to Sofus's throat. Sofus wouldn't be bothering Elias again. Christian hadn't expected to become friends with Elias, but it happened. Their shared knowledge of what happened in the washroom that day and the location where Christian had hidden the knife after the fact also provided a natural bond. Neither gave up the other even under the duress of police questioning. Life seemed to go back to normal after that, minus the bullying. Sofus had sustained serious injury to his eye and would not be back to school for some time. The toadies, seeing their leader dethroned, went back to being average nobodies. Elias and Christian were assigned a project and they chose to recreate The Round Tower, a Copenhagen landmark. To accomplish this feat, Christian biked out to Elias's house and they worked on the tower in Elias's father's workroom which was part of an outdoor shed on their property. Elias's father was a doctor who worked in Africa, and his mother was a nurse. Both had hectic schedules which left Elias alone for a good deal of his day. His younger brother was often in the care of their nearby grandparents, but since Elias had entered his teens, he had learned to be responsible for himself. This was another thing the boys shared: Christian's father went away on business frequently and he had to pass the time on his own. The boys found the most obvious choice quite appealing and started to spend more and more time together. One afternoon, Elias and Christian were sitting in Christian's front yard in the shade of Christian's favorite tree. They had Christian's RC car and were taking turns driving it around. Conversation soon turned to a new girl who had joined their school. "What do you think of Mina?" asked Christian. "She's okay," said Elias. "Yeah; she's pretty but she's not my type." "What's your type?" asked Elias. "I don't like blondes, really. What about you?" "I don't know." "You don't know?" Christian suspected Elias had no experience with girls but wanted to feel him out with more questions. He wasn't about to give himself away too easily before he knew Elias's interest. For some time Christian had felt a special closeness to Elias, one that he realized was proceeding past just wanting to protect him or be his friend. The more time they spent together, the more Christian's feelings deepened. "I probably wouldn't have a chance, anyway." "I don't think I'd want one," Christian hinted. Elias murmured his agreement but didn't commit to an opinion. The boys were silent for a time, then Elias passed the car controller back to Christian. Christian took it from him and as he did, their fingers brushed. Elias didn't flinch or seem in any way put off, even when Christian snuck a glance at him. Elias stared straight ahead but Christian saw him swallow hard. "You don't want a girlfriend?" asked Elias, still staring out at the car. "No," said Christian. He felt the answer a little blunt, but there it was. He didn't offer any explanations. "I don't, either," said Elias. Christian noted almost a sigh in his voice. "Come on," Christian said, getting up and putting the controller aside. "Where?" asked Elias, joining him. "Inside; I want to show you something I found." The boys entered the inn with Christian leading the way to the rooms upstairs. He would be taking a risk, but felt exceptionally daring at that moment. He led Elias to his bedroom and opened the closet doors. After a few moments of fumbling with various items, he pulled out a thick magazine and handed it to Elias. "What is it?" he asked, reaching for it. "A dirty magazine I found in one of the guest rooms. The guy must have forgot it because it was stuffed under the mattress." What Christian hadn't mentioned was that it was a gay magazine; soft core photos but still. "Geez," said Elias as he saw the cover. His eyes grew wide and he gave Christian a look. "That's crazy." "What's crazy?" Christian prompted. "That he'd just leave it there." "Yeah, I guess." "Have you looked at it?" "A little," Christian admitted. "It's not shocking or anything. Go ahead and look at it." Elias hesitated, holding the magazine without opening it. "My mother would kill me," he said. "She's not going to know; there's only me and you and I'm not telling anyone. It's none of their business." Elias sat on the bed and slowly opened the magazine to the center. A centerfold of a muscular young man stared back at the boys. The man was nude, in a seductive pose. Christian came over and sat next to Elias, looking over at the photo. "I don't like blonds," he reiterated, reaching over and turning the page. Elias turned to him and Christian saw the shock register on his face. Christian gave him an ever so slight smile with the corner of his mouth turned up just a touch - a somewhat non committal but revealing expression. "I think I do," said Elias, reaching up to touch a lock of Christian's dirty-blond hair. He fingered the strands tenderly as Christian studied his face. The space between them closed a fraction of an inch at a time, until Christian could feel Elias's breath on his lips. He brought his mouth to meet Elias's and kissed him softly, lingering for an extra beat before pulling back slightly. Christian's heart pounded in his chest and he felt almost dizzy; he'd never kissed anyone before. Elias responded, claiming Christian's lips with his own. The boys still held back and tentatively explored each other with the softest and lightest of kisses, taking their time as if anything more would shatter this intimate moment. Christian had left the door to his room open and he mentally kicked himself for this error in judgment. He hadn't meant to have this go so far, only to determine whether Elias might be interested in boys. He worried that one of the maids might happen by and see them, but didn't want to stop. Placing his hand on the back of Elias's neck, he gently pulled the boy closer to him and in doing, deepened their kiss. His tongue ventured to taste Elias's lips and was rewarded when Elias's mouth opened against his. Where Christian led, Elias followed; when Christian slid his hand down Elias's neck and on to his chest, Elias responded by moving in closer. They each yearned for more contact, but restraint was key considering their surroundings. Christian finally broke the kiss, leaving them both breathing heavily while leaning into each other. Christian nuzzled Elias's neck, leaving soft kisses from his shoulder to his ear. A small moan of delight escaped Elias's throat and Christian felt emboldened. He'd just nipped at Elias's earlobe when a door slammed downstairs, startling them both. In an instant they separated, Christian standing up and lunging for the door while Elias frantically shoved the magazine into Christian's closet. Without hesitation or a word between them, the boys left the room and ran downstairs as if they'd been chased. When they emerged into the sunlight that bathed the front yard, they stole a quick glance at each other. Elias's cheeks flushed pink but he was smiling. "See you tomorrow," Christian called as Elias ran to grab his bike. He gave Christian a small smile before riding away. Christian watched him until he disappeared around the curved path, then he turned and went inside. He couldn't wait for tomorrow.
