A/N: This is an "Orphan" fic... Enjoy!!
“Mrs. Morton, where is your husband.” The nun asked kindly. “He’s at work, is that a problem?” Mrs. Mort asked, her long blood red hair was braided back as she looked at the nun with her dark blue eyes. “Normally we like both parents to be here when the child is picked up.” She said, this clearly distressed Mrs. Morton. “However since I’ve spoken with both you and your husband I think we can make an exception this time. Esther seems to like you both and seems ready to go home with you.” “Well we are ready to have her home.” At that moment, the little girl appeared at the top of the steps with her single suitcase. “Hello up there.” Mrs. Morton called up. “Hello down there.” The girl replied, Mrs. Morton lifted her hand up to the girl offering it to her. The girl smiled and came down placing her hand into Mrs. Morton’s. “May I carry your suit case?” Mrs. Morton asked. Esther hesitated then handed it over to her. Mrs. Morton looked at the nun and smiled. The nun nodded and moved out of the way so they could pass her, then she followed them to Mrs. Morton’s ford focus. She pulled the keys out and opened the trunk, placing Esther’s suit case in carefully then she closed the lid. “Esther dear, would you like to unlock the car?” Mrs. Morton asked offering Esther the keys. “I don’t know how.” Esther said, the crisp spring air tugging at her pigtails in the morning sun. “See this button?” Mrs. Morton showed her, Esther nodded. “Push it.” Esther did as she was told and the jumped when the car made a beeping sound and clicked the doors open. “It’s okay dear you did that perfectly, why don’t you go hop in and I’ll be there in a moment.” Mrs. Morton smiled. Esther nodded and did what she had been told. “Alright look, I can see that girl has been through hell. If you need us for anything call me, but don’t come to the house without letting me or my husband know. The last thing I want if for you guys to show up and scare the hell out of my daughter for no reason. Are we clear?” Mrs. Morton asked, the nun seemed shocked but nodded her understanding. “Then have a good day.” Mrs. Morton said and with that she walked to the driver side of the car and took off. “Do you have other children?” Esther finally asked 10 minutes later. “No, you’re the only we liked.” Mrs. Morton asked. “Don’t get me wrong I’m sure the other kids were nice, but you seem… perfect for our idea of family.” Mrs. Morton said stopping at a red light. “We do have a dog, named Jafar. He’s a husky but he’s good with people, I’m sure you to will get along well.” “Where is Mr. Morton.” Esther asked. “He’s at work, now I think there are a few things we need to get out of the way to help put you at ease and make you comfortable in your new home. Alright?” Mrs. Morton asked, Esther was looking out the window and could not help but roll her eyes. She hated when they laid out all the rules on the first day, worse when they did it in the car on the way to her knew house. As if it was hard enough being an orphan, but she looked at Mrs. Morton and nodded. “Alright, my name is Emily. You can call me that or mom, whatever you are comfortable with. My husband’s name is Nick, again you can call him that or dad. As to the dog the only thing you’re asked to do is be nice to him, we rescued him from an abusive home. You can paint whatever you would like to on the walls of your room. I’ve taken the liberty of buying you some paints and brushes they are waiting on you. If you need anything, cloths, shelving, more paints, let one of us know so we can get it. Is there any food you won’t eat?” “No,” She said honestly, she was a bit shocked. This was not what she had expected. “Alright, we’ll have pork chops for dinner.” Emily said. “Did you mean what you said?” Esther asked. “About what?” Emily said confused. “About painting my room.” She whispered. “Yes, I meant it. If you need help you ask me or your da…Nick.” Emily said. “It’s alright; you can call him my father. That’s what you guys are, right?” Esther asked. “I was raised to believe that a father is the man that gave is sperm to the mother for the child’s creation. Parents however, moms and dads are cut from a different cloth. They are the ones to raise the child, care for them and support them. I will not force you to call us mom or dad, nor will Nick. It is a deeply personal choice that you must make when you are ready.” Emily said, Esther thought that over. She had never had anyone tell her that. She could not remember her own parents, other than the day they left her at the asylum. An hour later, they pulled up into a long driveway. To the right was a large field that had four horses in it. Esther could see that past the horse pen was a large stable that the drive way curved around behind. “Four horses?” “Yes, Nick’s, mine, my sister’s, and yours. That is if you want one?” Emily said. “I don’t know how to ride.” Esther said. “Well no better time to learn, just remember one thing: If you fall down it’s gonna hurt, so get up, dust off, and get back on. Alright?” Emily said, Esther nodded she liked the fact that Emily didn’t talk down to her. “Alright.” Esther said as the car came to a stop in front of a large two story house. The house set up on and had a stair case going up to the front porch with waterfalls on either side. Two pillars where graced by dragons at the top of the stairs holding up the roof over the front porch. “It’s beautiful,” Esther said, unclipping her seatbelt. Emily smiled and looked up at the house. “I hope so I designed it, took year to get it build.” Emily said as she got out of the car. Esther followed her to the trunk. As Emily pulled out the suitcase carefully, Esther could not help but be surprised again. She had never had someone care about the stuff she came with. “What do ya say that we get you to your room?” Emily smiled causing Esther smiled and nod back. Emily turned and went up the stairs that were made from large slabs of lava rock. “I want you to be careful playing on these steps, if you fall on them you will skin your knees and it will go to the bone. I’ve got enough scars from them to know. I guess I was about your age…”Emily said quietly then she turned and looked out over the area as if she were searching for something and couldn’t find it. “Yes ma’am.” Esther said, Emily looked down at her then laughed before going the last few step and unlocking the door. The filed in and Esther shut the door. “We don’t lock the door if we’re home unless it’s at night.” Emily said, Esther nodded and stepped further into the hall to look around. To her left was the living room and towards the back was what looked like a half of a library. Directly in front of her was a staircase and a two doors, one clearly lead out back. To the right was a dining room and she could see an opening just before the stairs that led to a kitchen. “Jafar is on the back porch, we’ll get you settled in your room then we can introduce you two.” Emily said walking to the stairs and going up them quickly. Esther followed her making a mental note of where everything was so that she could remember. “Your bedroom is here on the second floor, but you have a balcony and your own bathroom.” Emily said opening the first door at the top of the stairs. The walls where clean white, in the middle of the room were some sheets neatly folded, next to a ladder that had cans of paint that had been stacked around it and a bag of unopened brushes of various sized. The rest of the room held a Full bed and a solid desk. “You’re welcome to paint whatever you’d like in this room my only request is don’t paint the bedding.” Emily said, she was clearly teasing Esther. It was another first. “Also if you want to paint the whole room one color first that’s fine just let us know so we can get enough of that color for you.” Emily said setting the suitcase down. “Now we’re going to get you a computer in a few days, we can look into what you’d like to get to decorate this room and make it more you. The bathroom is through that door, come down for brunch when you are ready.” With that, Emily turned and left, leaving Esther alone to look around. This was the most at home she could remember feeling; she just wished that her knew “father” was here. He was supposed to be, they always made both parents pick her up before, and she sighed and walked over to look at the paints. Surprisingly there were only a pastel color was a rich sky blue. The rest were vibrant, bold and dramatic, noting like what she was used to being allowed to work with. Maybe this time would be different….
