Over the state of New Jersey, the stars glowed brightly in the night sky, a silent glittering audience in the inky abyss. In a medium sized town, a few cars drove about, either heading for home or work, their headlights adding to the luminance of city lights. Crickets chirped lazily in the background, muffled by the town night life. The night seemed like any other for this town.
A middle-aged woman walked along the mostly empty sidewalk, pulling on a jacket, her outfit that of a waitress. She was going home now, something she was looking forward to. She'd get to relax at home with her family and finally get away from the diner and the rather rude and perverted men who seem to always come there just to bother her. A tired sigh escaped the waitress as she walked, pulling her jacket closed more.
As time passed, the sidewalk became more devoid of life, pieces of litter here and there. The woman shivered unconsciously, drawing her jacket closed even more. She really hated walking home, but she had no choice. Her and her husband couldn't afford another car at the moment, especially with three mouths to feed. The only small mercy was that the diner wasn't too far from home and the walk was only half an hour long.
The woman sighed, brushing back a stray lock of hair from her face. If she kept thinking pessimistically as she was now, she swore she was going to get gray haired early in her life. With a huff, she continued on, determined to get home. However, she paused, something catching her attention.
It sounded like someone was following her, their footsteps heavier sounding. Nervously, she looked behind herself only to frown in confusion. No one was there, only a lone street light providing meager lighting. Shaking her head, the woman dismissed the oddity and resumed her journey.
However, to her dismay, the sound of footsteps not of her own began again. Yet again, she paused to look behind herself only to get the same result. Biting her lip in confused nervousness, her eyes darted about. Something was wrong here and she knew it, the hairs on the back of her neck rising in the beginning stages of fear.
Hurriedly, she turned and began trotting along, more eager to get home. Although, as she trotted along, the unfamiliar footsteps did not follow again. Relief flooded the waitress, but she kept her hurried pace, still uneasy. She only had a few blocks to go now, the closeness of her home ringing like a siren's song.
A yelp escaped the woman as she was suddenly grabbed from behind. Shadows and darkness enveloped her as she was forcefully dragged into the darkness of an alley. She struggled with all her might only to be slammed against a wall and pinned there. Her attacker was a man, his frame large and bulky, his breath reeking of alcohol. The woman tried to scream for help, but her pleas were silenced by clumsy lips as the man's hands greedily groped and pawed at her body.
The woman squirmed furiously for freedom, biting the unwanted lips viciously. The man gave a snarl of pain and jerked back only to punch her in the face. She almost blacked out just from the force of it, stars floating before eyes as her mind was sent spinning with pain. Only the sound of a belt unbuckling and a zipper being undone brought her back to full alertness. With a scream of terror, she struggled frantically.
The man merely grinned lecherously, moving back a little bit to let his pants fall down to his knees. However, his expression suddenly went black, his eyes widening. As if in slow motion, his chest seemed to explode with crimson. The waitress jerked back with a gasp as blood splattered onto her face and front, as well as the wall behind her. The man's eyes seemed to bulge out of his head, staring down at his chest.
The tip of a knife jutted out from his torso, the culprit of the sudden bloodshed. Slowly, the man's eyes rolled back and with a gurgling groan, he fell to the ground with a heavy bodily thud, a few twitches spasming across his body before going still. As he fell, a lone shadowed form was revealed, standing behind the corpse. The waitress merely stared with wide eyes, gawking.
The shadows hid the person, only the faint presence of white showing their general size somewhat. However, something was definitely unnatural about them. A single bright green eyes glowed brightly from the shadows, the pupil seeming to blend in with the iris in one single color. Silence fell heavily, eerie and chilling.
After a moment longer of gawking, the fact the waitress was just saved finally sunk in. "T-Thank you..." the woman breathed shakily. The shadowed person did not reply, their one glowing eye stared quietly then slowly and silently looked away. Shuddering, the woman took that as a sign to leave, pulling her jacket closed tightly as she hurried off quickly and desperately for home.
The shadowed form merely watched her go, silent still. After a few minutes of quiet, they finally turned their attention to the dead man. Unceremoniously, they yanked their knife out from the corpse's back, the knife coming free with a sickening squelch. Lazily, not seemingly hurried, they wiped the blood off the knife and onto the body's sleeve before turning to stalk off, heading out of town.
The stars illuminated their way as they walked along the road silently, entering country land. As they walked, they passed a sign dangling by a mere single chain, only sparing it a glance. The sign was beat up and faded, the letters almost barely readable now. A strong wind blew, the sign jerking about and rattling ominously, the faded white letters flashing in the dark.
