Sally shivered on the cool ground behind a cemetery monument. She hoped Jack wouldn't wonder where she'd gone and become worried, but she needed to be away from the town square for a while.
It was a week after Christmas, and too much had happened. She was Jack's love now, as she'd always hoped she would be, yet life was anything but perfect. It's closer to perfection than it used to be, she reasoned in her brain. Much, much, closer. She pulled her knees to her breasts, and shivered. If it’s so perfect, an insistent voice in her brain pestered, then why are you hiding here between the graves, all alone? A pair of small birds cavorted close to where she sat, providing momentary distraction. Sally wondered what the life of a bird was like. Was it easier than hers? She hadn't been alive terribly long, but little came without tremendous effort. Triumphs were forever tailed by complications. She closed her eyes, reviewing a conversation she and Jack had shared the previous evening... “How did they know, Jack? I don't understand.” “They didn't have to know anything for certain, darling. Curse my naivete for not foreseeing it, but this is just how people are. The reaction would have been the same had you slept downstairs, in a completely different bedroom.” “So they don't really know what we did?” “I suppose some do. Some creatures can tell. The vampires, certainly, and maybe the werewolf, but most don’t know. They don't even know what it is.” “I'm not sure what it is, myself, Jack.” “Are you alright, my dearest? I don't want this to trouble you. It’s all new for me, as well. But... I do know that I love you.” “I love you, too, Jack.” “Sally, what happens between you and I, in our bed, is no one's business but our own.” “I know, Jack.” She did know. She knew in her heart that cold looks and gossipy whispers meant nothing. That was a fact easily remembered when she and Jack were tangled under woolen blankets in his fire lit tower; sighing, and gasping, and giggling. It was when she was alone with nothing but a chilly ache between her legs, that worry seeped forth. She wished Jack didn't always have so much work to do during the day. She made that wish, than scolded herself for doing so. He can't babysit you every moment! He can't be expected to guard your sewing machine, making sure no one gives you a fish-eyed glare, or calls you that word that rhymes with door. You think you’ll be The Pumpkin Queen one day? Then you’d best toughen up! The sound of rustling feathers pulled Sally from her thoughts. The birds careened above her head. It was almost lunchtime. She laid her palm against the marble tombstone, ready to stand. The birds came to earth a few feet away. Sally froze, her attention rapt. They were doing that odd thing again. She'd seen it once before, from the kitchen window of the Doctor's lab. She'd been so mesmerized that she'd scalded the old man's lunch. There was much hopping and ruffling of feathers as the birds circled. They addressed one another in flurries of hushed tweets. They came together, and moved apart, came together, and moved apart... Are they dancing?, Sally wondered. It was a like a dance - but not exactly. As she crouched beside the tombstone, afraid to blink for fear for frightening them away, one half of the pair hovered inches off the ground. He lit for an instant on the back of his companion, then fluttered away. A second later he was back, the scene repeating itself. Sally's lips parted in sudden recognition. She smiled, suppressing a giggle. What hadn't made a crumb of sense to her months before, was now clear as window glass. “Why are you hiding here all alone, Sally? Is everything okay?” Jack's whisper breathed heat into her ear, and Sally yelped in surprise. The birds startled and soared away across the gray sky. “Are you okay?” Jack repeated. He slid beside her, enfolding the rag doll in his long arms. “Yes” she answered, relaxing into him. “I'm okay. I just needed to be alone for a while.” He smiled, cradling her. They began to kiss. Soulful, deep kisses that signaled a beginning of something more. Jack stopped himself. “Wow! Heh, I’m sorry... I've just missed you today, that's all.” The pair looked up at the sound of voices in the distance. Some of the townsfolk were approaching, coming to the cemetery for lunch. Sally touched Jack’s skull, bringing him back to her mouth. She wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling all at once as light and carefree as a sparrow. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
