The waves churn, an angered surface of foamy white and gray, threatening to drag down those weak enough to fall into its clutches. High above, storm clouds rage, rain pouring in bucket fulls as lightening skitters across the sky, thunder booming after in chase. Sky and ocean release their fury on all below and above, creating turmoil. A lone ship floats along, tossed about by the torrent seas like a mere toy.
The crew aboard rushes and scatters about, trying their best to keep the ship from breaking into utter madness as they tied down what is unbound and moveable. The sails ripple violently in the harsh winds, the voices of men shouting and yelling almost drowned out amongst the storm's chaos. Many stumbled and fell, all struggling not to be sent flying or tumbling off the ship. The captain bellows, barking commands from before the wheel, his voice almost barely heard above the howling winds and roaring waves.
Fate seems to take mercy upon them as an obvious change in weather begins to show. The wind quietens, the seas settle, the churning surface calming. Rain lightens, going to a mere drizzling mist, making visibility almost little to none past the ship's railed edges. "Bless the Heavens....it finally stopped..." the captain, a man grizzled by time and a rough life, mutters to himself. Beside him, a young boy of barely in his teens looks on with wide eyes, amazed at how quickly the weather changed. It was only the cabin boy, barely onboard the ship for a month and still struggling to get used to the sea's ever changing ways.
"Go on boy... go see if anything below deck has been damaged," the captain commanded, watching the crew resume tying down unbound objects, just in case the storm picked back up. Without needing to be told twice, the boy hurried down below, knowing well what would happen if he did not follow his orders. As he surveyed below, he realized that everything was much worse then on deck. It was an utter mess.
Objects were strewn about the floors of every room, even things that had been attached to the walls. Many things were broken, most things that were fragile, such as glass items like lanterns and bottles. The smell of rum was in the air, one of the crew member's secret stash most likely not having survived and broken. Further, the cabin boy searched, eventually ending up in his own room. Thankfully, he did not have much items to begin with, so only a few items such as his books were thrown from their resting places.
With his survey done, the cabin boy turned to leave only to pause. He had seen movement, movement outside the small window to his room, giving him a view of the sea. Curious, the boy moved closer, peering out of the window, eyes searching for the movement. At first, nothing happened, just the mere swaying and gentle churning of the waves. Shaking his head, the boy pulled back, deciding to just dismiss it on his still dazed mind.
However, as he turned, the movement appeared again. Frowning, the boy went back to the window and peered out. However, this time, he saw something, his eyes going wide as his jaw slackened. Something was coming towards the ship, hidden under the waves with only glowing, eerie yellow lights showing where it was. Dazedly, the boy noted there was six, his frazzled mind struggling to comprehend what he was seeing. When it finally clicked, panic rose and he ran out of his room, shouting.
"It's coming! IT'S COMING!"
Many of the crew just looked at the boy shouting about in a panicked frenzy at them like he was crazy. The captain pushed through them, moving to intercept the boy by grabbing his shoulders. "What are ye talking about boy? What's coming?" the captain demanded, frowning. "I don't know! But it's coming!" the boy exclaimed frantically, desperately trying to relay the urgency. "Boy, you're not making any sense!" the captain barked harshly, "Now calm down and explain yourself!" The cabin boy merely gave a frustrated cry and pulled away, rushing to the rail and pointing out the ominous lights that steadily grew closer.
"LOOK! IT'S COMING!"
At this, thew crew surged forward to the rail, captain included, to see what the fuss was all about. Together they stood, standing there and gazing at the sight transfixed, not sure what they were looking at. But as the lights came closer, the fact that something was coming towards them finally hit and they instantly scrambled away from the rails, giving shouts of exclamation and alarm. The lights seemed to surge on faster, glowing brighter as if sensing their rising fear.
"WHAT IS IT!?"
"IT'S GETTING CLOSER!"
"WHAT DO WE DO!?"
"WE'RE GOING TO DIE!"
The crew was panicking, the captain struggling keep them under control, shouting at them to shut up and remain calm. It was to no avail, the only one not panicking being the cabin boy, who remained by the rail. Transfixed by awe and horror, he stared with wide eyes as the lights got closer, only now a dozen meters away. Suddenly, as if they were candles blown out, the lights disappeared. ".....I-It's......gone!" he said aloud in astonishment, looking around rapidly. At this, the captain joined him, looking around with squinted eyes.
"Where did it go?"
Silence hung heavily in the air, painful, ominous, and promising ill fate. The crew, drawn together at the deep instinct that numbers means safety, huddled together, their eyes darting about in nervous fear in search of those terrifying lights. But there was nothing, the mist blinding them to anything past the ship's rails, as it seemed to become denser, as if to purposely blind them to their possible demise. And then they heard it.
It was a sound, a sound they could only compare to the musical keening of a whale. But there was a difference, painfully obvious. It was close, seeming to surround them, a low soft musical keen, wavering in volume. The air vibrated from the strength of the keening when at its loudest, which seemed to tease and torment the crew as it continued to sound from everywhere. Slowly, the cabin boy and captain back away from the railing, unconsciously moving to join their crew.
As seemingly as soon as it started, the keening stopped, the silence figuratively slamming down in its place, smothering the crew and increasing their fear. Suddenly, there was a sound, soft at first, but slowly growing in volume. It was the sound of creaking wood, the ship suddenly going absolutely still, as if held by some invisible force. The creaking grew louder and louder, the captain's eyes going wide as he realized just what the creaking could possibly mean.
"Oh no...."
Just like that, the ship was yanked under the waves, an explosion of water signaling its decent. The water settled, as if nothing happened, as if the ship had never been there and no one would be missed. But as suddenly as the ship disappeared, it reappeared, only in chunks and shattered pieces, several crew members flung into the air, the cabin boy among them. They thrashed about, flailing desperately and clinging desperately to anything to could get a hold onto, crying out for help. However, no one could hear them but themselves, their fates sealed. One could only pray that their demise was swift.
