Chapter One - Necessity
Jack rubbed a hand over bleary eyes, the rum bottle was empty, he had choices
to make, another bottle or he could seek warm arms, soft flesh to while away
the rest of the night. He had already drunk more rum than was good for him, he
was feeling morose, that was the word he had been looking for when he had been
talking to an increasingly uncomfortable Gibb earlier, morose. Too much rum,
too much thinking made him feel morose, made him think about things that he
thought he had put behind himself, things that were years in the past. Things
like love. His fingers touched his chest lightly, pressing against his chest,
against the scars that rested beneath the creased linen, his thoughts
drifting……
*
The moss that hung from the twisted trees dripped loudly as he mounted the
uneven stairs, the long boat already moving out to wait in the centre of the
channel, the men looking fearfully over their shoulders even as they watched
his every move. Each step was loud, the thud of his boots echoing over the
water, he swallowed. He was ready to bargain with Tia, he had a goodly number
of small valuable items tucked away in various pockets, trinkets that he
thought would appeal to her, items that were unusual, interesting, not the sort
of pretty baubles that most women delighted in, but then Tia was not most
women. Truth be told she made him nervous, not that anyone would be able to
tell of course.
He raised his hand to knock at the uneven wooden door, his fist halting as her
voice drifted through the gaps in the walls of the shack.
“Jack Sparrow, so the wind has once again blown yer back to me.”
“Tia” he pushed the door open, and bowed with a flourish. The thick air stirred
as he stepped into the room the swirling currents suddenly rattling the bells
that hung in the window, the glass jars that were suspended from the ceiling
began to sway, so that he had to weave his way through them. He knew from past
experiences not to look at the contents, sometimes they looked back.
“Tia you are looking radiant” he bowed and she extended her hand graciously so
that he could kiss it, all the while a slightly mocking smile tilted the corner
of her lips, the black dye staining her teeth showed as she smiled.
“So what you be wanting of me Jack? I am sure that it is not that ye be wishing
to gaze upon me face just a one more time.”
“That of course Tia” he had hastily assured her, fluttering his eyelashes and
adopting a slight leer as he looked her up and down. She snorted and slapped at
his hand when he inched his fingers towards one of the jewels that rested on
her table, a sapphire as big as a ducks egg.
“That be cursed Jack”
He yelped and stuck his hands back in his pockets.
“So you be wanting Tia’s help again Jack Sparrow?”
Of course she had asked for payment first, before she would answer his
question, but this time she had told him what she required. Passage for
someone, a woman, and Tia had called her name, her eyes appearing to look
through the wall into the other room, the room that Jack had never entered.
“Maia”
The beaded curtain had rattled and a figure stepped through.
It was her eyes that made Jack stand up a little straighter, sea green, and she
had met his gaze, watching him unblinkingly as he had looked her up and down,
bad habit of his considering the circumstances he supposed as he noticed how
her jaw tightened. A firm jaw, pointed chin, high cheek bones and dark hair
that was loosely bundled at the nape of her neck. She wore pants that were
tucked into boots that reached above her knee, a loose shirt that covered her
arms to her wrists, open at the neck, the tight vest worn over it molded to her
shape, slender but with curves in all the places that they should be. A woman
to make any man take a second look this Maia, Maia he had read that name
somewhere, he almost snapped his fingers but stopped, Maia, Latin meaning star
of the sea.
“Star of the Sea” he had not realized that he had murmured the words until he
saw Tia look at him, her eyes calculating.
“Aye Jack. So will you accept my terms?”
“One moment, where is the lass wanting to go.”
Tia stood, one hand trailing along Jack’s arm “she will know when she gets
there Jack.”
“So are you saying I just go about my business with her on board until she
decides to leave?”
“No Jack, yer to be sailing about until she knows where she is meant to be..”
“Right I thought that was what I said.”
Tia shook her head her expression indulgent, a smile playing on her lips. “Do
we have an agreement?”
Jack thought about it, he supposed that they did “aye we do.”
*
“Jack tis terrible bad luck to be having a woman on board – twice bad to be
having one of her kind” Gibb’s whisper was urgent and he leaned even closer so
that Jack could smell the stale rum on his breath.
“Her kind?” Jack knew just what Gibb’s meant but it amused him somewhat to make
the other man say things he was uncomfortable with. Having just spent a rather
uncomfortable hour himself with Tia it seemed only fair to be spreading that
feeling around.
Gibb gave a huff “well of course she is Jack, what decent folk would be
associating with the likes of her” he tilted his head sharply in the direction
of Tia’s home, fast disappearing behind them as the men bent their backs to the
oars, no encouragement needed now that they were leaving.
Jack raised an eyebrow “so what would you be implying then Gibb, about my
visits….” he trailed off and watched the other man, one hand rising to cover
the smile that was threatening to turn into a laugh as Gibb squirmed.
“Necessity Cap’tn” he glanced ahead of them, at the prow of the boat where the
woman called Maia sat, he spat “she is one of them; mark my words Jack that
woman is trouble.”
Jack followed Gibb’s angry stare, that woman was watching her hand trailing in
the water, ripples spreading from her fingertips her face placid. She did not
look like Tia, she was probably just looking for help, just as he had been,
there would be an explanation. He smiled to himself, nothing to worry about;
Gibb was just an old woman at times. He turned a chuckle into a cough as the
woman looked up at him, green eyes meeting brown, her gaze seeming to see
inside his head, a half smile tilting her lips. The cough turned into a choke
and Jack wrenched his eyes away from her as Gibb pounded his back. He regained
his breath and turned back to the crew.
“Hurry up lads I’m thirsty.”
From the corner of his eye he saw her look away and he let out his breath. She
might not look like Tia but there was something there, he could sense it, he
rubbed his hands together leaning over to whisper in Gibb’s ear.
“Tia and I we have an accord mate, this Maia sails with us until she finds what
she seeks. But keep a weather eye on her.”
“Aye Cap’n and what should I be telling the crew?”
“Nothing, or they will be conjuring all sorts of ghosts and ghoulies”
“Anna Maria?”
Jack let out a long breath “I will talk to that one, no doubt she will be
knowing.” He waved a hand in the air “women seem to just know these sorts of
things.”
“Aye” Gibb’s voice was puzzled even as he resumed watching the stranger’s back
