Far From Home
14 years ago, August 20th, 1800
She could smell the sea on the brisk cool breeze.
She stood there on her balcony, staring out at the black waters just north of
her. Night time had fallen and the town had gone quiet. There was the
occasional sound from a drunk from Billy’s pub, but at the moment the sea was
only thing making a sound. She did love the sound of the water crashing against
the rocks and she fought the impulse to sneak out to the beach.
It wasn’t a place for a woman to walk the town at
night, unescorted. Men might see it as an opportunity to take advantage or
worse, harm a woman. Though, she wondered if it would be better to be hurt then
standing there with her broken heart. Her love had announced to her that he would
be leaving the following morning on a ship to follow his dreams of becoming a
commander. She had never been so crushed in her life.
She had dreams of them settling down with him,
starting a life of their own. It seemed like a foolish dream now as she thought
about it. She expected him to settle for her when he could see the world and
its cultures. He, himself, could become worldly educated and find an educated
woman, rather than a merchant’s daughter.
Though at the time, she thought he loved her, but
now, his true love was the sea. She wasn’t sure if she could ever forget him or
the love that she had for him.
She looked down at the locket in her hand. He had
given it to her as a goodbye gift with one request. He asked her to see him off
tomorrow. He wanted to hold one more image of her in his mind, though she
didn’t know why. He had to know she was dieing inside, but she promised him.
She would regret it, deep inside, she knew she would.
But this wasn’t about her anymore. It was about her
putting aside her own happiness for him, and praying his dreams do come true.
She did give her self one foolish hope; he would come back for her when he was
ready.
When dawn came, she was ready. She had put her
emotions on the backburner and made sure she would not show a tear for him. She
didn’t want him to hesitate for a second. She would be sure to have a smile to
cover the shattering heart. At least, it was what she hoped.
She walked out her front door, the cool crisp
morning air greeting her and some one else, her love, standing on the stoop
waiting patiently for her. He trusted her enough to know she would see him off
or perhaps, he fear she wouldn’t and wanted to make sure she did. She chose not
to question it.
She walked down her steps and met him at the bottom.
He smiled gently at her before holding out the wild flowers he had picked from
the hill near the docks. It was the same place, they had their first kiss.
“For you,” He said softly.
She took them before bring the flowers up to her
nose to get the scent. They smelled wonderful. She looked at him gratefully.
“Why are you spoiling me, Jack?” She asked softly.
“This day is about you.”
He smiled before smoothing her soft, silky
chocolate colored curls. She felt her heart melt then start breaking knowing he
may never touch her in such a sweet way again.
“Because, Cat, I love you,” He answered simply.
She took in her breath for a moment. Tears welled
in her eyes. Her vow was broken and she hated to show him how much it was
killing her.
“I can’t do this. I can’t watch you leave my life
forever,” She sobbed.
He nodded understanding her pain. His dark brown
eyes met her soft emerald ones as he pushed up her quivering chin.
“I will always love you but we have to move on,” He
soothed. “You will find a man who can give you everything you want. I have
nothing to offer you.”
She stared at him with distress. She that is want
he thought of her.
“You have you to offer,” She countered. “That’s
enough for me. I am a simple woman.”
He smiled softly at her before kissing her gently.
“Yes, love, you are but I am not sure if I can
offer you me. So I must go and travel the world. I will come back for you,” He
swore. “If I don’t, you will always have our memories and the absolute right to
hate me.”
She opened her mouth to say something but he
silenced her with his finger. Words were too much at this point. Words would
not explain nor express how much it killed them both.
He placed a two karate diamond ring on her finger.
He kissed it before he looked at her.
“Something to remember me by and a promise that you
will always hold my love,” He promised.
She took the leather binder from under her arm and
handed it to him. He looked at it confused for a moment then looked up at her.
“They are stories, drawings, and poems I have done
since we’ve been together, I want you to have it,” She said softly.
He opened it and saw a child’s picture of two
people with writing under it that said: MY BEST FRIEND IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!
His eyes welled at the sudden emotion he felt for
her. They had known each other since they were five years old.
“There has to be fourteen years of material in
here,” He said as he flipped the pages.
“Aye, there is,” She agreed.
He looked at her before wrapping his arms around
her tightly. He kissed her shoulder, then her neck. He moved up to her lips. He
kissed them until he thought he couldn’t breathe any longer. He pulled away.
“I must go. We will be sailing soon,” He announced
suddenly.
She looked down before up at him.
“I’ll never forget you, Jack Sparrow,” She said
with a smirk.
He returned the smirk, with his cocky smile.
“I won’t forget you either, Catherine Lockwood,” He
repeated. “You will forever hold a place in my heart.”
He kissed her one last time, when he heard the
ship’s bell. He bolted down the street.
Catherine watched him until she could no longer see
him. Her heart broke and she swore she would never let go of the pain.

Present
time- 1814
Catherine paced back and
forth in her room. She had docked at Port Royal,
half an hour ago. She had been inviting to her dearest and closest friend,
Elizabeth Swan’s wedding. She had received several letters from Elizabeth about
this man named Will but her heart about flew out of her chest when she had
written about a pirate named Jack Sparrow. She refused to think that same
innocent boy that left her, was now a pirate! It was preposterous!
She stopped and looked out
the long window. She had agreed to stay with Elizabeth until day after the wedding. But
the wedding was the farthest thing from her mind.
For the first time in
thirteen years, Jack was dominating her thoughts once more. She didn’t asked
questions about Jack to Elizabeth.
At least not yet but she was determined she would. She just asked Elizabeth for the book
about Jack Sparrow, which she happily obliged.
Catherine looked at the
book that was on her desk. It taunted her. She threw the windows open to get
the in the room. She would not be disturbed, at least not until dinner. She was
meeting this Will Turner and she was slightly excited.
She took in the sea air
before finally deciding it was time. It was time she read up on her former
love’s actions since they parted. So she sat down and began reading.
