Chapter One
The gathered crew members in
the shack gaped at Hector Barbossa, the previously
thought dead captain. He stepped down to their level and bit into a yellow
apple. Juice trickled down his chin and a twinkle lit in his eye. Elizabeth stood up, her
hand shaking so much that she almost dropped the cup she held.
“Impossible,” she muttered.
“M’possible.
. . Maybe so. Yet ‘ere he be,
a breathen,” Tia Dalma replied.
Elizabeth blinked. She took a few slow breaths, trying to ease
her pounding heart. This was some kind of dark magic. She’d been dragged to
church every Sunday and warned about devil’s work such as this. It frightened
her to the core, but not in the way she expected. The resurrection made her
fascinated and hopeful. What type of person was she turning into?
Pirate, a familiar voice
played in her head. She shut her eyes for a moment.
A man shot in the heart, sent
on a path to hell with no way back, but somehow he found one. There were no
boundaries on what could be done anymore. Jack Sparrow could be brought back as
well. She could make amends for what she’d done.
“Do tell us,” Will said, “How
did you manage a feat as this? I am curious.”
The ex-captain licked his
lips. He eyed the apple-core in awe. “I’d forgotten how delicious fruit
tasted.”
Will gritted his teeth. “If
we are to work together you must not hide information.”
Tia Dalma gestured toward Barbossa. “Dee great Barbossa has returned from the other side to rid his sins.”
“Aye,” Barbossa
agreed. “Was in the depths of darkness I was, but I was given a chance to
return in confidence that I’d help ol’ Jack.”
“Shiver me timbers!” Gibbs
exclaimed. “By the powers, why would ye be wantin to aid our good man Jack?”
Barbossa pointed at Gibbs. “That is the key word thar, Gibbs. Good man Jack is.”
Elizabeth opened her mouth. Ragetti
and Pintel exchanged incredulous looks. Will clenched his
jaw.
“Thee
all mighty above has seen it fit to give Jack a chance to prove himself, me as
well. Our actions have been murky in the past, but our hearts still have the
capacity to change,” Barbossa explained.
“Told you God looked after
our eternal souls,” Ragetti told Pintel.
Elizabeth narrowed her eyes. “So, you and Jack have to work for
passage into heaven?”
“That be
right, lassie,” said Barbossa.
She crossed her arms. “Where
is Jack now exactly?”
The soothsayer gazed off into
the distance. “Jack lies in the between land. He is not of the Earth, yet not
of the after either.”
“Purgatory, dear Lizzie,” Barbossa said.
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. She touched her stomach, feeling
dizzy. They had to travel to purgatory? She’d heard tales of the plane. It was
a place where souls ended up if they were not evil enough for hell yet not good
enough for heaven. Jack was trapped in a dimension of punishment, not
equivalent to the underworld, but painful just the same. She’d put him there. He didn’t deserve it.
She’d do anything to right things, even take his place.
“Let’s go at once!” Elizabeth declared. She
eyed everyone. Will frowned at her eagerness.
Barbossa grabbed a hold of her sleeve. “Hold on there. We be first needen a map to the end
of the globe.”
Elizabeth jerked her arm away. “A map?
Where do we have to go for that?”
Barbossa smirked. “Singapore.”
************
Hanging lamps cast shadows
across the gray water. Elizabeth
steered the tiny boat with a long pole. She kept her vision straight ahead and
refused to think. Their plan was risky and she couldn’t allow herself to doubt.
The boat came up to the
harbor. Barbossa stood on the wooden platform and
looked down. A crowd of Chinese soldiers surrounded him, ready to draw weapons
if need be.
“There come
the prisoner now,” Barbossa said.
Gibbs, Rageth,
Pintel, and Elizabeth
grabbed hold of a black hooded man. They forced him from the boat.
“Show us to the Dragon Lady,”
Barbossa ordered.
“This is he? Are you sure?” a
soldier questioned.
“Aye, he bares the mark.”
Barbossa stepped over to the blinded and rope-bounded man. He pulled up the
prisoner’s shirt to reveal the tattoo of a battle dragon.
“Does that convince ye?” Barbossa asked.
The soldier examined the
inked back. He hesitated and then nodded. “This way.”
Elizabeth let out a long breath she wasn’t aware of holding in.
They followed the Chinese soldiers to a small temple. The only source of decoration were a few bamboo tapestries. At the
head of the temple sat a woman. Her face was heavily painted and she wore a
flowing red silk robe. She took in her visitors with intensity.
The soldiers got to their
knees. Their leader got to his feet after a moment. He was the one who had
addressed the pirates earlier. He spoke in Chinese. The Dragon Lady pierced her
lips.
“Lang Si,”
the leader said. He presented the tattoo for the mistress to see.
No one moved.
The Dragon Lady clutched the
arms of her throne. “That is not he. I know who slain my brother and that man
is not he!” She spat this in fluent English.
The gig was up. The fake Lang
Si fiddled with the rope that held his wrists
together. It didn’t take much to work them free. He then lifted the hood from
his head. Will Turner was revealed.
“Will!” Elizabeth called.
Will turned his head. She
tossed his a sword, which he caught gracefully. She drew out a dagger to defend
herself.
“Give us the map!” Elizabeth demanded.
The Chinese leader, who was
in fact the famous Sao Feng, a pirate captain, fell
into a fighting stance. “We know why you have interest in this map. You wish to
pinpoint the location of Jack Sparrow. He is a scoundrel to us. We don’t see a
reason to aid you in your quest.”
“What is the price?” Elizabeth asked.
Sao Feng
ran his eyes from her feet up to her face. He licked his lips. “I think
something might be arranged afterall.”
The hold on her dagger
loosened. She froze.
“What are the terms?” She
already knew the answer.
“A week in
my cabins.”
She dropped the dagger,
making no attempt to retrieve it. “A-And if I do- You-You’ll give us the map?”
“Elizabeth!!” Will shouted.
“You give me your word?” she
continued, ignoring her fiancé.
“Of course,” Sao Feng said.
“Then I . . .”
Will held
his sword to Sao Feng’s throat. “Over
my dead body!”
Chaos erupted then. One of
the soldiers leapt up and threw Will aside. Sao Feng
took out his sword and faced off with Will. The others became occupied with the
soldiers. Elizabeth
snatched up her dagger. She spun and
slashed at one of the attackers.
They fought for a very long
time. Elizabeth
spared a second to search for Will in the mess. She couldn’t find him. She
didn’t have time to ponder over his absence. She stabbed a Chinese soldier in
the chest.
***********
Will and Sao Feng were a ways away from the others. Both men were sweaty
but kept up the ferocity of their brawl. Each matched the other with strength
and skill.
Suddenly Will stopped
attempting to strike and only defended the swings that came his way.
“I don’t want what you think
I do,” Will said.
“I am listening” Sao Feng said.
Their fight lowered in
intensity.
“There is no love between
Jack Sparrow and I,” Will said. “You spoke earlier of
your hatred toward him. It seems that we both are on common ground.”
“It would seem.” Sao Feng lowered his sword.
“I can’t bear to see Jack
Sparrow walk free. I’ll hand him over to you to do as you like.”
“And in
return?”
“The map.”
“If you do not desire to
rescue Jack Sparrow, what value is the map. Wouldn’t
it be more fitting to leave him to rot in Davy Jone’s
Locker?”
“He has something I have use for,” Will said.
“How do I know you will
follow through? You might take the map and not meet up later,” Sao said.
“I’ll pay you now. Three doubloons each.”
“Five.”
Will held out his hand. “Agreed.”
***************
Elizabeth waited near the water, along with Barbossa.
She fiddled with her hands nervously. A figure emerged out of the night. She
made out that it was Will. He raced toward them and held up a crinkled and torn
piece of parchment.
“I have the map,” he informed
proudly.
Barbossa took the paper. He looked up to meet Will’s eyes.
“I’m impressed, Mister Turner.”
Elizabeth met Will’s eyes. He quickly averted his gaze.
Something didn’t sit right with her for some reason.
“Do you have us a ship?” Will
inquired.
“Aye, we have ourselves a
ship. The Hai Peng.”
Barbossa pointed over to a junk ship. It had patched
sails and appeared to just be holding together. “It’s not much of a sight but
she’ll suit our purpose.”
They filed onto the ship’s
deck.
“She’s a junk. I hope she
doesn’t fall apart,” Will said.
“She’s sturdy enough.” Barbossa kicked the side of the ship to prove his words.
Will huffed.
Elizabeth kept her eyes on Will, not understanding the unease
that had settled in her stomach. Something just wasn’t right.
She waited until she could
talk to Will alone. She sat down beside him on a crate.
“Why are you coming with us?
If it is just to accompany me, I don’t need to be looked after,” she said.
“That’s not it.” He paused.
“Jack stayed onboard to give us a chance. I owe him gratitude.” His eyes
darkened. “Why are you so set on saving Jack, Elizabeth.”
She lowered her gaze to the
planks below. “The same reason as you. Gratitude.”
“Is it? That’s all?”
Elizabeth lifted her head, her eyes wide, stricken. “Yes. What
other reason would there be?”
“Love,” Will said.
She laughed. “Don’t be
absurd!”
“I saw you. You kissed him.”
Her laughter ceased. She
shook her head. “It meant nothing. It was-“ She
couldn’t tell him what she did. She couldn’t bare to
see his accusing stare when she confessed to being a murderer. “It was a
thank-you gift. He was going to die for us, for me.”
Will turned his head away. Elizabeth reached out and
took his chin. She moved him back to face her. She brought herself only an inch
away.
“When I kiss you, it is
different. It is from my heart.”
She proceeded to press her
lips to his. She caressed him gently and slowly. It was completely opposite
from the hard and deep kiss she’d shared with Jack. When they broke away light
had returned to Will’s brown eyes. He weaved his right hand into her wavy
locks.
“Oh, Elizabeth,” he breathed. He cradled her head
to his neck. She rested there, fighting the sting in her eyes.
The kiss had been nice. But
there were words greater than nice. Miraculous, mind-blowing,
amazing, earth-shattering, powerful. The list could go on and on, each
describing the memorable kiss from that of Jack Sparrow.
