Disclaimer: I do not own the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: If I owned this, it wouldn’t be suitable to be a Disney film, so don’t sue.
A/N: Okay, my take of the ‘love’ between Will and Elizabeth in the movie is that it is merely infatuation on both of their parts. Will is infatuated by a lovely lady above his station, and Elizabeth is infatuated by the romance of pirates. Therefore, this story is slash, between Will and Jack to be more specific. It is also AU. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
The Will to Survive
Chapter 1
“Ah, Mr. Turner , good to see you again,” Governor Swann said, approaching the young man.
“Good day, sir,” Will said, somewhat glad that Elizabeth was not with him. “I have your order.” He opened the case he had been carrying and presented the Governor with the sword inside.
“Well,” he said, taking the sword and unsheathing it.
“The blade is folded steel. That’s gold filigree laid into the handle. If I may?” he asked. The Governor handed the sword over. Will balanced it on his finger. “Perfectly balanced. The tang is nearly the full width of the blade.” He gracefully flipped the sword and handed it back to the Governor.
“Impressive,” he stated, taking the sword from the young smith. “Very impressive. Ah, now, Commodore Norrington is going to be very pleased with this. Do pass my compliments on to your Master. Hmm?”
“I shall,” Will forced himself to say, bearing the unfairness of not being recognized for his work. “A craftsman is always pleased to hear his work is appreciated.”
Will fought the urge to groan as Elizabeth appeared at the top of the stairs. She was likeable enough, but there was a certain air about her that made him want to stay as far away from her as possible. He knew she was somewhat taken with him, and he did not want to give her any false hopes. His heart lay with another. It made him want to leave, but she was, to a certain extent, his friend and had taken care of him after he had been pulled from the sea.
“Oh, Elizabeth , you look absolutely stunning,” Governor Swann stated.
“Will!” she exclaimed excitedly. “It’s so good to see you. I had a dream about you last night.”
“About me?” he asked.
“Yes, well, is that entirely proper for you to…?” the Governor asked.
“About the day we met, do you remember?” Elizabeth asked, ignoring her father.
“How could I forget, Miss Swann?” Will inquired, humoring her.
“Will, how many times must I ask you to call me Elizabeth?” Elizabeth asked.
“At least once more, Miss Swann , as always,” Will replied.
“There. See? At least the boy has a sense of propriety. Now, we really must be going,” Governor Swann said, handing Elizabeth her parasol. “There you are.”
“Good day, Mr. Turner,” Elizabeth said, somewhat sullenly.
“Come along,” her father instructed.

Jack sailed boldly towards Port Royal. This was the first time he had arrived openly there. He was usually indiscreet, but he didn’t have the time. He had heard rumors, rumors of the Black Pearl. Her captain was heading toward this port, apparently looking for something. Those telling the rumors had no idea what he was looking for, but Jack did. And he would be damned if he let Barbossa get his filthy hands on him.
As he noticed the amount of water leaking into his small ship, he vainly tried to remove it with a small pail. He took note of the three skeletons hanging near a sign that read “Pirates Ye Be Warned,” and swept his hat off his head in respect. Giving up the pail, he climbed upon the mast and sailed up to the dock in the sinking ship. Reaching the dock, he calmly stepped off the mast and strode forward.
“What – hey. Hold up, there, you,” the Harbormaster called. “It’s a shilling to tie up your boat at the dock.” They both looked at the sunken boat. “And I shall need to know your name.”
“What d’ye say to three shillings…,” Jack replied, placing the three coins on the Harbormaster’s book, “and we forget the name?”
The Harbormaster considered this for a moment and stated, “Welcome to Port Royal, Mr. Smith.”
Jack smiled and walked away, grabbing the Harbormaster’s money pouch on the way. Knowing that the person he wanted to see was more than likely unavailable at this time, he made his way to where he knew the Interceptor was docked. Two British Navy officers quickly blocked his path.
“This dock is off limits to civilians,” Murtogg stated.
“I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t know. If I see one, I shall inform you immediately,” Jack said and tried to continue on his way but is again thwarted. “Apparently there’s some sort of high toned and fancy to do up at the fort, eh? How could it be that two upstanding gentlemen such as yourselves did not merit an invitation?”
“Someone has to make sure this dock stays off limits to civilians,” Murtogg replied.
“It’s a fine goal to be sure but it seems to me that a ship like that,” Jack said, gesturing toward the Dauntless, “makes this one here a bit superfluous, really.”
“Oh, the Dauntless is the power in these waters, true enough,” Murtogg agreed, “but there’s no ship as can match the Interceptor for speed.”
“I’ve heard of one!” Jack stated. “Supposed to be very fast – nigh un-catchable…the Black Pearl.”
Mullroy chuckled. “Well…There’s no real ship as to match the Interceptor for speed.”
Murtogg looked at him. “The Black Pearl is a real ship.”
“No, no it’s not,” Mullroy argued.
“Yes, it is, I’ve seen it”
“You’ve seen it?” Mullroy asked skeptically.
“Yes.
“You haven’t seen it,” Mullroy stated.
“Yes, I have,” Murtogg protested.
“You’ve seen a ship with black sails, that’s crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?” Mullroy asked.
“No.”
“No.”
“But I have seen a ship with black sails,” Murtogg said, as Jack took the opportune moment and slipped away.
“Oh, and no ship that’s not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails therefore couldn’t possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl. Is that what you’re saying?” Mullroy asked.
Murtogg nodded. “No.”
“Like I said, there’s no real ship as can match the Interceptor…” Mullroy said turning toward where Jack was before. Both officers started and looked toward the Interceptor to see Jack at the wheel.
“Hey! You! Get away from there,” Murtogg called. As they both ran toward him with their guns up.
“You don’t have permission to be aboard there, mate” Mullroy stated.
“I’m sorry, it’s just - it’s such a pretty boat. Ship,” he corrected.
“What’s your name?” Murtogg asked.
“Smith,” Jack replied. “Or Smithy, if you like.”
“What’s your purpose in Port Royal , Mr. Smith ?” Mullroy asked, lowing his gun a bit.
“Yeah. and no lies,” Murtogg said.
“Well, then, I confess, it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out!” Jack proclaimed.
“I said no lies!” Murtogg exclaimed.
“I think he’s telling the truth,” Mullroy said to him.
“If he were telling the truth, he wouldn’t have told us,” Murtogg replied.
>“Un>“Unless, of course, he knew you wouldn’t believe the truth even if he told it to you,” Jack said, further confusing the two redcoats. To make things worse, he started recapping all of his wondrous, if somewhat fabricated, adventures. During one of these, a splash interrupted them. A young woman had apparently fallen off of the cliff above the water.“Will you be saving her then?” Jack asked Mullroy.
“I can’t swim“.
Jack glanced at Murtogg who stared back at him. “Pride of the King’s Navy you are.” He hands the guards his effects. “Do not lose these,” he said as he dove in to save her. He swam toward the girl and grabbed on to her. He struggled to get to the surface. He quickly realized that her dress was weighing them down and had to go. He ripped it off and swam toward the surface with ease.
“Ooh, I got her,” Murtogg said as he helped Jack lift the girl out of the water. “She’s not breathing!”
“Move!” Jack said, shoving him aside and cutting open her corset. The young woman spat out water and gasped for breath.
“Never would’ve thought of that,” Mullroy commented.
“Clearly you’ve never been to Singapore,” Jack observed. He suddenly noticed the golden medallion hanging from the girl’s neck. “Where did you get that?” How could this girl have gotten it? There was only one answer. This must be Elizabeth Swann. She must have taken it.
Commodore Norrington arrived on the scene and pointed his sword at Jack. “On your feet.”
“Elizabeth. Are you alright?” Governor Swann asked.
“Yes, I’m fine,” Elizabeth replied.
Governor Swann saw Murtogg holding Elizabeth 's corset. Murtogg pointed at Jack, Swann looked over at him. “Shoot him!”
“Father!” Elizabeth exclaimed. “Commodore, do you really intend to kill my rescuer? “
“I believe thanks are in order,” Norrington states, offering his hand to shake. Jack hesitantly takes reaches out to shake the proffered hand. The Commodore grabs his hand and pulls up his sleeve to reveal the brand ‘P’ for pirate. “Had a brush with the East India Trading company, did we, pirate?”
“Hang him,” Governor Swann ordered.
“Keep your guns on him, men. Gillette, fetch some irons,” Norrington commanded. He sees oo ooo of a sparrow in flight. “Well, well… Jack Sparrow, isn’t it?”
“Captain Jack Sparrow , if you please, sir,” Jack corrected.
“Well, I don’t see your ship…Captain,” the Commodore pointed out.
“I’m in the market as it were,” Jack stated.
“He said he’d come to commandeer one,” Murtogg said.
“Told ya he was telling the truth,” Mullroy pointed out. “These are his, sir,” he said, handing him Jack’s effects.
Norrington looks at the gun. “No additional shots nor powder.” He opens the compass. “A compass that doesn’t point north.” He then unsheathes the sword. “And I half expected it to be made of wood. You are without doubt the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.”
“But you have heard of me,” Jack noted.
“Commodore, I really must protest,” Elizabeth stated. “Pirate or not this man saved my life.”
“One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness,” he argued.
“Though it seems enough to condemn him,” Jack pointed out.
“Indeed,” Norrington said.
“Finally,” Jack stated as he threw his chains around Elizabeth’s neck.
“No, don’t shoot!” the Governor exclaimed when the soldiers held up their guns.
“I knew you’d warm up to me. Commodore Norrington, my effects, please, and my hat,” Jack ordered. “Commodore! Elizabeth. It is Elizabeth isn’t it?”
“It’s Miss Swann.”
“Miss Swann, if you’d be so kind. Come, come, dear. We don’t have all day,” Jack stated. “Now if you’d be very kind. Easy on the goods, love.”
“You’re despicable,” Elizabeth stated after she had finished putting his effects on him.
“Sticks and stones, love. I saved your life, you saved mine, we’re square. Gentlemen, m’lady, you will always remember this as the day that you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow!” Jack exclaimed as he pushed Elizabeth away and escaped above their heads, dodging bullets as he went.

Jack managed to avoid any officers and entered into Brown’s smithy. He took a hammer and went to use it to take the cuffs off his wrists, but noticed a sleeping Brown, apparently drunk. He walked up to him and poked him. Getting no response, he took a step back. “Woah!” he shouted, and again, got no response. Satisfied, he went about trying to use the hammer to get the irons off him. To his frustration, he received no reward for his efforts. Noticing the machine running above him and donkey used to power it, he got an idea. He took a piece of hot metal and put it to the donkey’s behind. He put his chain in one of the gears and it broke in two.
Happy with his work, he smiled. Suddenly, he heard the door start ton ann and quickly hid himself.

Will walked toward the smithy a little worried. The people on the street all talked about a pirate on the loose and naval officers were patrolling everywhere looking for him. Will prayed that it wasn’t who he thought it was. He couldn’t bear the thought of him being caught.
He entered the smithy and noticed the gears all turning. He calmed Bessie, the mule, and looked at Mr. Brown. “Right where I left you.” He then saw a hammer laying out. “Not where I left you.” He turned his head and noticed the hat laying nearby. Suddenly, he felt a pair of arms wrap around him from behind.
“Hello, love.”
“Jack,” Will whispered, turning around and leaning into the embrace. “What are you doing here? Are you crazy? The entire fort is looking for you!”
“Hush, love,” Jack said. “I know, but I had to risk it. He’s coming here, I know it. He’s coming for ye, and I had to come to make sure he didn’t get ye.”
Will’s eyes widened. He knew who the he Jack was talking about was. “But why? I’m no use to him without the medallion, and I don’t have it! It’s lost!” he exclaimed.
“No, it isn’t. It’s here. Elizabeth has it,” Jack informed.
“She does? She must have taken it when I was pulled from the water. But why?” Will asked.
“It doesn’t matter. What matters is keeping you safe,” Jack said, capturing Will’s lips with his own. He ran his tongue over Will’s lips and was immediately granted entrance. He swept his tongue around that delicious mouth and tasted and explored every crevice.
They both parted and turned their heads as there came a pounding at the door.
“Oh no,” Will said, looking fearfully at Jack.
Jack stepped away from Will and toward the backdoor. “No worries, love. I’ll be--” he was cut off by a bottle smashing over his head and knocking him out. Will looked at Brown standing over Jack’s prone form and couldn’t believe what he saw. Suddenly the door burst open and the Commodore and his men came in.
“There he is. Over here,” a soldier exclaimed.
“Excellent work, Mr. Brown. You’ve assisted in the capture of a dangerous fugitive,” Norrington stated.
“Just doing my civic duty, sir,” Brown replied.
“Well, I trust you will always remember this as the day that Captain Jack Sparrow almost escaped. Take him away,” Norrington commanded.
Will gazed longingly after their retreating forms. Jack had been caught. He was going to be hanged!
“I’m sorry I had to do that, my boy,” Mr. Brown stated. “But I had to or you would have gone down with him.”
