Elizabeth stood aboard the deck of the Fathers Pride, gazing out at her domain. The whole ocean now stretched before her. It had been almost a year since her departure from Port Royal. She had sailed out in less than grand style on a boat that would eventually become her own#147#147;Less than grand style meant she was dragged, shrieking and threatening, over the shoulder of Captain Jack Sparrow and hastily deposited on the deck of another ship of Her Majestys Navy. Nicest present anyone had ever thought to give her. She smiled as she called up a mental image of the roguish captain, imagining what sort of trouble he was getting himself into.
She, of course, was a much more conscientious pirate. Her crew rarely plundered anything, really, relying on the cache of Ilsa de Muerta for funds. Of course, occasionally a ship or two would begin an attack against them, and it couldnt be helped but to fight back. That couldnt possibly be considered their fault. And honestly, some opportunities were just too good to pass up. Like last week, in that cove of Aruba, for example. But how often did one manage to find a battle-ravaged ship full of swag, just waiting to be plundered? It certainly wasnt an everyday occurrence, and she felt their actions had been entirely justified.
Besides, she had perfected the most devilish method of treasure extraction, it was a shame not to use it. Shed put on one of the fine gowns that had been recently plundered, and pretend to be a captive of her own crew. Generally the ship in question would pay the outrageous ransom demanded, and after that she would simply faint over the side, wriggle out of the dress, and swim back to her ship while the sailors were still searching the water for her. If on the other hand, the captain of a particular vessel was cheap, he would be convinced to give Elizabeth a fine dinner. After her crew was aboard, she would take the Captain hostage, and much to everyones amazement, she would sail off into the distance with holds brimming.
No, Elizabeth wasnt really a pirate. More like an explorer. She didnt drink that vile rum, and she would never trade a mans life for her ship like some pirates she could mention. Well now... to be fair, it would depend on the man. She enjoyed the freedom of the sea so much. Away from corsets and marriage proposals (though that wasnt strictly true... more than one of the unfortunate captains had been rather forward) and rules. She realized how right Jack had been to kidnap her, and send her off on this boat.
This boat that was currently headed towards Tortuga. She had been meaning to go for some time now, but just hadnt seemed to get around to it. It came very highly recommended from Jack, and Will had told her to never set foot on that accursed rock unless her life was in grave and immediate danger. High praise indeed, coming from that one. They were still a few hours from port, so Elizabeth decided to retire to her cabin, leaving her crew to their various duties.

Miss Elizabeth!! Miss Elizabeth!
Thats Captain Swann, Elizabeth barked at the ragged child who had come running and screaming down the dock. After all, she couldnt have her crew getting the wrong idea. Now hush, child. What could possibly be the matter?
Its the Pearl! They were ere three days ago, and in a bad way.
Elizabeth froze for an instant that lasted much longer than she wouldve liked, and then terror snapped her into action. Grabbing the child, she demanded Where were they headed?
One of the crew said e was going to maroon-
Everybody back aboard the ship, Elizabeth screamed, managing to raise her voice above the din of the town. Within five minutes they were on their way to a tiny, familiar spit of land...

Elizabeth stood at the bow, peering towards the horizon through a telescope, face shaded by a large hat. It had been a present from Will. He had said it suited her better. She had thought it looked incredibly stupid, but there was a chance that Will would need as much support from her as possible. She hoped whatever the problem was, it was as simple as a leaky hull. However, seeing as Captain Jack Sparrow was involved, she wasnt very hopeful. She folded up her scope and went back to the helm. Honestly, she didnt want to think about all the things that could have happened. Best to just get there as soon as possible and sort it all out.

Of course they couldnt catch the Pearl, but luckily when they arrived at their destination, it was there, anchored just beyond the shallows. Elizabeth breathed a sigh of relief once they got close enough to see that the ship was still floating and intact. There was one possible fear allayed. They fired a shot to announce their arrival, and within minutes Elizabeth was rowing over on a small boat. As she was helped on board the Pearl, not seeing Jack or Will about, she yelled for Anamaria.
Elizabeth! Thank God youre here, we were afraid word wouldnt reach you, the woman explained as she approached.
Whats happened? Whos being marooned? Elizabeth was still casting eyes around for Will or Jack.
They both are. If they wont come out of that hold. I tell you, Ive had enough!
Anamaria, youre leading a mutiny? Elizabeth asked in shocked disbelief.
You would too if youdve had to be on this boat for the last fortnight!
Well will someone tell me whats going on?
Your two pirates are not speaking to each other.
Now, this may not have seemed like a big deal, but it certainly knocked the wind out of Elizabeths proverbial sails. Any other two pirates, on any other ship, not speaking to one another would either be considered a boon by the rest of the crew or business as usual. But Jack and Will were what brought the Pearl to life. Will had deserted Elizabeth shortly before Jack had returned to capture her. Every now and then she would wonder just how much of a part Will had played in his decision to liberate her from her Port Royal home.
The three would run into one another from time to time, swapping stories of their adventures and sharing warnings of Norringtons most recent location. It hadnt taken Jack long to figure out how in love with him Will was, and the pair were the it couple of Caribbean-based pirates, ever since Read and Bonney had moved North. If Will and Jack werent speaking....
Wheres Will?
Hes in the Captains quarters, Anamaria quietly supplied.
I thought you said-
Jacks in the brig.
Elizabeth rushed down the ladder, oblivious to the relieved sighs of the rest of the crew. She paused outside the closed door. She couldnt hear sobbing, so she took a deep breath, stilled her shaking hand, and knocked.
Go away! What did I tell you people?! Im not leaving until hes off this ship!
Will, you let me in this minute! If he was going to be a big baby, Elizabeth could play mother just fine.
There were sounds of furniture overturning and being pushed roughly aside as Will scrambled to the door.
Will opened the door a crack to make sure it was really her. Elizabeth? What are you doing here?
Well I was about to let my crew have a weeks rest in Tortuga, when I find out that theres trouble aboard the Pearl. Whats happened? Elizabeth managed to look concerned and annoyed at the same time, as only she could manage.
Tortuga? I told you that was an evil place, and you-
Yes, yes, and what did I tell you about taking up with pirate captains?
That I was a good lad, and should keep to my forge. Oh, Elizabeth you were right! He opened the door and then collapsed into a chair with a dramatic flourish. She moved to the bed, settling in and expecting to be there for some time. I shouldve married you.
Will love, you did. Remember?
Oh... thats right. Well, lets go home to Port Royal, start up a family, we can-
Will, Port Royal is not my home. Elizabeth ed aed at him sternly, to snap him back from whatever fantasy land his mind had wandered off to. No more than it is yours. If we went back, the only way I would keep from becoming a widow would be if I was hung first.
Will slumped back in his chair, looking sad and defeated.
Now will you tell me what happened?
Will launched into a long and rather self-pitying story of how Jack still refused to let him know where they were going before they got there, and didnt trust him, and was emotionally manipulative. I mean, honestly, does he think Im going to maroon him after all this time?
Um, Will, you know I hate to be the one to mention it, but you did threaten to maroon him, as I understand it. Elizabeth smiled at Wills surprise. And here the lad had thought it was a rhetorical question.
Oh. Well I wouldnt really. You know that.
I do Will. Do you want me to tell him?
Will nodded, looking somewhat sheepish. I like the hat.
Elizabeth adjusted the brim as she stood. Quite a comely wedding present, I thought. Ill be back in a tic.
As she left the chamber, she ran into about twelve of the Black Pearls crew crowding the hall. Its all right. Hes just cross that Jack wont trust him.
They didnt look as relieved as she would have hoped. What?
Mr. Gibbs spoke up, Jacks not gonna like hearin that, Miss Elizabeth. Id not like to be the one to be tellin im-
Ispeaspeak with him. Captain to Captain. The crew parted before her, once again sighing audibly, allowing her access to the brig. Before she started out, she grabbed the keys off a hook on the wall, slipping them into a deep pocket of her trousers.
As she approached the cell where Captain Jack Sparrow was being held, she could hear cursing, punctuated by the sound of breaking glass. She stuck her head through the hatch before daring to step below. She took a deep breath, in order to be heard over the stream of profanity, I invoke the right of parlez!
Elibbabeth? slurred an obviously drunken Jack. Izzat you?
Aye, Captain. What are you doing down here? And are you sober enough to carry on a conversation, she silently added.
Me crew as turned mutinous! All on account a that nimble-fingered, hat-wearing, son of the devil blacksmith. Jack started searching amongst his adequate supply of empty bottles for one containing more than three drops of rum.
Elizabeth kept from laughing. Captain, my husband may be many things, but I feel son of the devil is going a bit too far.
Husband? He never said anything about a husband! The lyin-
Jack, you were at our wedding. Remember? My father had granted you special pardon to come? Elizabeths prompt left Jacks face in its state of confusion. You gave us this lovely, she cringed at the lie, collection of tea cozies? You sat next to Norrington?
Awhhh, thats right! Ow is the ol chappie anyways?
Deciding that Jacks mood had improved, Elizabeth started down the stairs, You were the one to see him last, as I recall. You seem to enjoy frequenting Port Royal mor more than I do.
Oo is that then?
Elizabeth sighed and turned, ready to go back up the stairs. Youre impossible to talk to Jack Sparrow. And here I had heard tales that you could shake off drunkenness at the drop of a hat.
Then why dont you drop that ridiculous thing, and well ave ourselves a conversation. All hint of rum was gone from his voice, and as Elizabeth turned back around, she saw he had straightened his hat and struck a pose. And its Captain Jack Sparrow, love.
Am I going to have to play witless foil for you every time we meet, just to inceince you to talk sense? Elizabeth inquired as she placed the hat on the back of a chair and sat down, facing the incarcerated Captain.
That shall be decided on a case by case basis. Now what is it you wanted?
I want to know why Will thinks you dont trust him.
I do! What ave I ever done to make the lad think otherwise?
Well, he insists you still are afraid hes going to lead a mutiny against you48;
