p> Jp> Jack grasped the coin with both hands. He gazed into the shining piece of gold, running his fingers over the embossed skull he had come to know so well. He could still smell the blood on it, and he felt the change come over his body. It started as a gnawing ache, just a hint of discomfort, easily dismissed but oft returned to. Shuddering at the taint the world had taken on, he moved away from the chest, off the pile of gold and onto the ground. He scrabbled at the dirt, flinging it away from his body in every direction. Carefully, he set the coin at the bottom of the new little hole, and with great concentration, he patted the earth back over it. Turning, he saw an apple still dancing on the surface of the water. Baring his teeth in a smile, he vowed that the man who killed his Captain would pay. He swam out of the caves, tail floating along behind him.

It had taken weeks for Jack to swim to Port Royal from Isla de Muerta. It was irritating, but the only way. If he stowed aboard a ship, he might be taken on as a pet and caged. Though at least temporarily immortal, he didnt fancy spending months if not years as someones plaything. Upon reaching the docks of the town, he climbed up and immediately started searching out the blacksmith.
Deciding earlier that he had no chance at all of finding the Black Pearl on his own, he had settled on the young man as his best bet. The days at sea had not robbed the whelp of the smell of the forge, and Jack had marked the scent of iron and ash on him the second he had stepped aboard. So, he returned to Port Royal once more, attempting to find the town blacksmith and the girl, no doubt now his wife.
Suddenly Jack noticed the pairs of eyes focused on him. Apparently a dripping monkey emerging from the ocean and scurrying down a pier was a sight to remark in Port Royal. Perhaps waiting until nightfall was a wiser plan. If anyone saw his decomposing form, they would most likely think they had either drank too much or seen some sort of apparition. No matter which they decided upon, they would leave hn pen peace. Scuttling up a tree, he chose to settle in and wait out twilight.

The sun was beginning to set, and the moon had risen a few hours before. Jack dropped to the ground like a lithe little stone, and began creeping towards the town, still careful to keep to the shadows. He wandered into a few blind alleys before happening upon the statue of a man and his anvil. How fortunate that the majority of Port Royal residents were illiterate. It worked quite to Jacks advantage. Not hearing sounds from the forge, he nimbly scaled the side of the building. It was a warm Caribbean evening, and the shutters were still open, allowing the breeze (and clevemianmians) entrance. As he perched out of sight of the homes inhabitants, he could hear every word of their heated discussion.
You cant be-
Will Turner, I will not stand idly by while you pine your life away for that pirate!
Im not pining for him, Im -
I dont care if youre pining for the man or for the ship or for the sea they ride on, and here Elizabeth broke to keep from crying, lowering her voice and then continuing. Will, each time she said his name it was as if she was pleading with him, trying to make him realize she was speaking the truth, youre not happy here. She paused, expecting some outburst of protest from him, but continued after a drawn silence. And Im not going to spend the rest of my life watching you pretend like Im enough for you. Tomorrow morning, before Im awake, I expect you to be gone.
With that she whirled in her multilayered dress and went to her room. She managed to get the door closed before she started to sob. Even Jack could hear it.
Will looked crushed and deadened. After sitting for minutes and staring at the wall, eyes glazed, he grabbed his coat and a large hat. He went downstairs to the forge, and Jack descended as well. Metal clanked, and soon Will emerged, sword at his side. He carefully locked the door behind him, and started towards doc docks. Jack followed at an ample distance, not wanting to be recognized.
The pair soon found themselves in front of a small rowboat. From the smell of it, Will was no stranger to a night on the sea. The boat practically reeked of him. Jack watched as the blacksmith settled in, and he made himself comfortable on a shelf under the dock itself. Will didnt seem as though he was honestly looking for sleep, but soon enough the rocking of the waves lulled him into a shallow sort of slumber.

Jack clung to the side of the Navigator. He couldnt swim fast enough to keep up, and so he had been forced to overcome at least a bit of of his paranoia. The lad had managed to gain passage on a merchant ship that was making a short stop in Tortuga. Jack cursed himself for not thinking of it first. Of course his namesake would be back to the town brothels, he need only have waited there. Though, the blacksmith might prove to be an added incentive for the pirates return. Once Jack thman man got word of Wills arrival in Tortuga, he was bound to be interested enough to stop his pillaging and turn back. Jack dug in his claws and screeched as a high wave nearly buffeted him from his perch. Cursed and wet. Oh Sparrow would pay.
***
Jack perched on the windowsill. He watched as Will slept. This was the eighteenth night he had been so occupied. Will had taken a place in town, and even found somewhere to work. From what Jack could tell, one of the two town blacksmiths had recently turned pirate, leaving a nice vacancy for the boy. Jacks eyes narrowed. Such a levelheaded young man. He would never make a good pirate. Well, not a fun pirate anyway.
Just then, the door to Wills room slowly opened. Jack caught a glimpse of light reflecting off a glass bead and rushed forward, only to smack into the window. Curse the scalawag for finding the only boarding house in alrtugrtuga that had glass windows. Jack seethed as he saw the pirate creep up to the bed. Jack the human pressed his hand over Wills mouth to ensure a quiet and fast awakening. He started up, and after a few hushed words were exchanged, the pair quickly left the establishment. They exited through a back door, and Jack was hard pressed to follow them through the alleys of Tortuga. Eventually they broke free of the rows of buildings, and Jack saw his ship, his home, resting in the harbor.
They had fitted the Pearl with new sails since he had last seen her, and repaired at least a few of the larger holes in the hull. He paused in his dash to appreciate her new look, and then realized how far behind he was lagging. Apparently Jack the human had angered even the lax old men who passed for authorities in Tortuga, because the Pearl was moving out of the harbor even before its Captain had returned. Jack didnt manage to reach the pier in time, and so he had to jump into the bay, his skeletal form chasing after the accelerating ship.
He grabbed a trailing rope and hung on as the Pearl gained speed. Jack thought about how sloppy his human counterpart was, letting a rope trail behind the ship. Barbossa would never have stood for that. Well... to be fair, he might have... but he had more important things on his mind. Being cursed was quite a distraction, and so things like trailing lines could be excused. Jack began climbing up the rope, determined to wait for the perfect moment to revenge himself on the ships new captain. Or, possibly he could be considered the ships old captain. Whatever, Jack shook off the idea. The point was, he was an interloper and must be punished for what he did to the Pearls rightful captain. He was the un-rightful captain. That sounded about right.

Jack clung to a bit of the rigging, out of sight (he hoped) of the crew of the Black Pearl. He was starting to get jumpy. He knew he couldnt stay up here much longer before someone found him. Might as well get to it. Releasing the rope, he fell to the deck with a quiet thud. Jack!
Apparently not quiet enough. He spun around. Will, just the man I was lookin to find.
Somehow I doubt that, J No Now why could that be? Perhaps because youve been avoiding me ever since you kidnapped me from Tortuga.
Kidnapped? I did no such thing! You came willingly.< <
So you dont deny youve been hiding from me.
Jack paused, looking at Will through narrowed eyes. Youve still not told me why Elizabeth threw you out.
Youre avoiding my question.
And you mine, lad.
Will decided not to point out that, technically, Jack hadnt asked him anything. She said... Will paused and looked at his feet, she said Id been pining for you.
Jacks eyes widened. Ah. With that, he turned and started walking away.
Jack. Barely more than a whisper, it still made the pirate stop short. Without moving, he said quietly, Will, I... I cannot...
I understand. You dont feel -
Its not that, finally he turned around to look Will in the eye. Its... I have hope your father yet lives.
Wills brow furrowed. Suddenly, things Jack had said came flooding back to him. ...somewhat familiar... one of the few who knew him as... look just like him... a good man... Jack met his gaze with a determined set to his jaw and a sad look in his eye. And then a monkey fell on him.
WHA! Jacks startled yells soon turned to ones of pain as the monkey attached itself to his arm and looked as if it were ready to stay there for quite some time. Jack began flailing about as members of the crew ran to see what was the matter. Everyone gathered around in shocked silence as they watched their captain wrestle with the small creature. Eventually, Jack managed to fling the thing from hif. f. All eyes followed its screeching arc into the ocean.
Well. That was new, Jack said, before noticing quite how badly he needed medical attention. Anamaria rushed to him with a bottle of rum, giving him a swig before dousing the rest into the wound. Jack opened his mouth to curse wildly at her, and promptly fainted dead away.
***
Jack sat, locked in his cabin, bleary-eyed and in pain. The monkey attacks had been going on for six days now. Yesterday, he had finally retreated to his cabin, leaving Anamaria in control of the Pearl. He wasnt happy about it. He couldnt even get any rest, for every time he nodded off, he would only be awakened by dreams of little monkeys attacking him. This was no way for a pirate to live.
What could be possessing that monkey? And how could it have managed to survive after being thrown into the sea so many times? It was wearing clothes, tiny monkey clothes, so obviously it belonged to someone. He was reasonably sure it didnt attack its owner like this. Perhaps some rival had trained...
Barbossa, he spoke that name with venom and certainty . Throwing open the door to his cabin, he stormed onto the deck.
MONKEY! he yelled at the top of his lungs, but the thing must have jumped at him even before it had heard the cry. This time it attached itself just above Jacks left boot, one of the few areas still free of monkey-bites. Jack grabbed at it, managing to pin its arms to its side, and brought it up to look him in the eye.
Now see here, thats quite enough. I can understand you miss the dear departed Barbossa. Not a feeling I share, but were all entitled to our own opinions. And anger is a necessary part of the grieving process, but Ive ad about enough of you taking it out on me. Barbossa had it coming, seeing as e left me to die on that island. Twice. And someone was bound to off im sooner or later, he was a pirate after all. So you can either forgive, forget, and move on, or find yourself tied to a rock at the bottom of the ocean for all eternity. Savvy? Jack smiled at the little creature who had stopped squirming in his hands. Setting the monkey on the deck, he stood his ground as he waited to see if another new part of him was going to require a rum-bath. The monkey ran to the side of the Pearl and hopped over, diving into the waters below. Jack breathed a sigh of relief, and then looked around him. The entire crew was staring at him.
What? Youve not seen me strike a bargain with a monkey before? To be fair, only Gibbs had, but the rest of them should be able to take it in stride. He was Captain Jack Sparrow after all, what else was to be expected? Back to work!
