Chapter 1

Nadia’s Present

It was an unusually dark night in the fifth sector. Nadia Steele tried to drown the horrifying images that haunted her dreams. She got up from her bed and made her way into the kitchen. She hadn’t been in her place in so long, that she felt uneasy as she moved through the dark hallways. Reaching the kitchen, she splashed cold water on her sweat soaked face and poured herself a glass of Cognac.

Sauntering across the room, she walked down a few stairs to her living room. She turned on a lamp and sat down at her piano. Looking out of her wall of windows, she watched the waters of the ocean rise and fall again. She reached down into her robe pocket that was hanging heavy from the bench and pulled out her side arm. Holding the smooth, silvery, steel gun in one hand, she sipped from her glass with the other.

Nadia sat the gun on the bench beside her and placed her long slender fingers on the keys of the piano. Running her fingers along them, the sweet sounds of some of her own greatest compositions filled her head. She sat her drink down and from memory, she began to play “Steele in The Past.”

She loved music. She loved to make and write music. Some nights the sound of the strumming of the key was the only thing that relaxed her enough to rest. The music elevated her to a place of comfort, where life’s problems couldn’t touch her. She sometimes wondered why Johns had saved her life that night. Why did he choose her? Why was she given a second chance at life? Why did she sometimes long for death?

Rid/Nadia’s Past

Max and Vivian Blackwell were a very wealthy family, who took in kids.They took in Riddick, Nadia, and this kid named, Don Brown. These kids were in desperate need of a loving home. The Blackwells also had a biological daughter named, Dylan.

Don had always been known as the troublemaker on Planet Deep. The Blackwells took him in to try and make a difference in his life. Oddly enough, both Riddick and Nadia were found in trash dumpsters. They had been bounced around from one foster home to another, until the Blackwells rescued them.

At the time, Riddick and Dylan were 12. Don and Nadia were 10. From jump, Rid and Nadia had hit it off and became very close friends. Dylan instantly became jealous of their unique relationship. She just couldn’t stand that Nadia was the most important girl in his life. She wanted to be the one, who he shared his secrets with. She wanted to be the one, who he embraced, when he saw her. She wanted to be the one who made his brown eyes twinkle with delight. She just couldn’t stand that they had a special bond that nobody, namely her, could break.

A few months went by and Nadia’s attitude changed. She tried to distance herself from everyone, mainly Riddie. Riddick could tell that something was terribly wrong, but didn’t push it. He felt that she’d tell him when she was ready. Every time that he did ask her about it, she’d come up with some lame story. He just knew that she was lying then. It angered him that she was hurting so much, yet she didn’t confide in him.

Dylan was very active with sports and friends. She ran the “spacetrack” for her school. When she wasn’t running, she was out with friends. She spent a great deal of time away from home. While she was home, she seemed to be the purrfect little girl.

Meanwhile, Don just couldn’t keep out of trouble at school. He’d intentionally start fights for no apparent reason. The Blackwells were called in for a conference with the principal.

When the Blackwells asked him why he was misbehaving, he said,” It’s either punk or be punked here. I had no choice.”

They didn’t quite understand his choice of words, but understood what he was he trying to say. The principal put him on suspension for two days. Nadia scolded him about it, and they got into it. Of course, Riddick was there to stick up for her. That started the bad blood between Don and Nadia. After their spat, Riddick suspected that Nadia was upset over him. He just chalked it up as “sibling rivalry” and nothing else.
