Chapter Nine
After Round One
Everyone except for two made it back to the ship alive but, only five or six had gotten trophies. The first planet we stopped by quickly became overrun by the hard meat and we had to evacuate or risk losing the entire hunting party. A somewhat untypical but not unheard of event. For the first round we were put into teams of three, Beira being the third to myself and Tox. We worked surprisingly well together and the small male started to grow on Tox just a little. My large comrade was still wary of him but he never said why. He just encouraged me to get out and 'make more friends'.
It was hard to make friends when Tobias was still the main thing on my mind. Thankfully I was able to put him aside when we went hunting, though the first time around it wouldn't have mattered. Our group barely got into the dense jungle when we were recalled.
I stared out the port side window of the ship in my favorite hallway. We had been aboard for about an Earth month and I quickly memorized the layout of my temporary home and found some favorite places where I could think when I wasn't training, eating or sleeping. They were quiet places where few bodies passed through.
"Thinking of me?" Beira teased as he came up behind me. I sighed and turned to face the small male, he was 'taking a shine to me', as Toby would have put it but, I didn't know how to turn the male down. I couldn't really explain I had someone 'back home' because, technically, I wasn't supposed to.
"You know I am," I teased back hoping he wouldn't take it the 'right way'. As soon as I saw him get a sultry look in his eyes I knew I had made a mistake.
"Looking to train?" I said trying to change the subject before I got in too deep.
"Not really, looking to relax," he replied and I could have sworn he purred at me.
"We can find the Elder, have him regale us with a few stories," I suggested and at that point it was sounding like an excellent idea. "I hear he has quite a history," I added trying to sound like I really did want to hear his tales.
Beira must have gotten the hint because he nodded. "Sounds like a good idea," he said and led the way to go find the Elder.
I sat through hours of storytelling with Beira sitting next me looking engaged. I was thankful that I had chosen something that interested him more than getting to know one another.
When Thor'nak was done Beira walked me back to the room I shared with Tox. When he saw my comrade wasn't there he followed me in before I could say anything.
"You grew up together?" he asked while taking a seat on my bed.
"Since we were pups," I said and sat on Tox's bed scooting back as far as I could. I made sure my posture was rigid and closed off, I didn't want him to get the wrong impression.
"Are you 'together'?" he asked suddenly and I nearly fell over. Another sultry look came into his eyes and he got up after I shook my head. Nervousness started to creep into my stomach as he sauntered to me and leaned down so we were face to face. "Then what's holding you back?" he asked and I could feel the blood rush to my face.
"I don't like males," I said with as much conviction as possible but it didn't look like he believed me.
"You don't have to like males to get pleasure," he purred and leaned in even closer.
Instead of leaning into him, like I knew he wanted me to, I leaned to the side and stood up, leaving him bent over the bed.
"So, you like to be dominant?" he asked and waved his rear end a little. "I can be submissive," he teased but I shook my head.
"I don't like males," I said gently. "You are very kind to offer but I must decline, my apologies." Even though he pouted when he stood straight he nodded to me.
"I understand, I won't bother you again. I'm sure there are others on the ship I can have some fun with," he said with a wink and I smiled, very glad that he understood I wasn't interested.
"I'm sure there are," I said with a chuckle.
"Still training partners?" he asked and I nodded. "Hunting partners?" he asked and I nodded to that as well then clasped his arm. "I'll leave you be, then, have to go find those males," he said with another wink and I smiled, shaking my head as the door shut behind him.
My body deflated drastically and I collapsed on my bed. I didn't know if I would have been able to hold him off much longer without giving him the 'real' reason if he hadn't back down. Resorting to violence wasn't something I liked to do but I wasn't about to give in to him. If I had to I guessed I would have been able to at least throw him out of my room.
"You okay?" Tox asked when he finally came back. His voice made me jerk in response and I nearly got into a defensive posture. "Something bad happen while I was out?" he asked seeing my reaction.
"Beira," I said and my comrade nodded.
"I noticed he's been taking an interest in you lately," Tox said and sat on his bed. "He's not giving you any trouble, is he?"
Tox's expression was on the verge of a slow anger but I shook my head. "I just got done telling him I wasn't interested," I said with a sigh.
"Good, one less person I have to keep an eye out for."
"What do you mean?" I asked and sat up to look at Tox.
"There's word on the ship that there are a few who don't 'think like the rest'…" he paused and thought for a few moments. What he told me didn't make much sense.
"They think males should be in charge," he clarified and I suddenly understood.
Females were the foundation of our societies, they ran the governments and were the official heads of the clans. Males spent their adult lives hunting and gathering trophies to bring back to them to impress them so they would mate with them. Well, that was the simplified version of our culture.
Males also hunted for the right of passage, so that we could mate with females. The hunt was to ensure that only the strongest survived and when the males returned the females could pick from the best of the best to strengthen their clan. Normally choosing a mate was mutual and to have several was not unheard of, on both sides.
What Tox was saying, though, was that a small group of males thought they should be the true leaders of the clans, not the females.
Females were in power for a very good reason, they were less prone to being blinded by rage and weren't quick to anger, they birthed the pups that made the clans strong and they kept everything, and everyone, in order to ensure their clan's survival. If males ever became truly dominant our society would slowly crumble, wars would rage between clans and the results would be devastating. We were taught from a young age to respect the females, they were our mothers and they were given the power, strength and wisdom to know what was best for us from the gods.
"Do you know who they are?" I asked. If he knew then we had to address the matter and tell the Elder so he knew what was going on.
"It's only rumors and I'm not even sure there are any on the ship that think like that," he said and shrugged his shoulders.
"Keep your guard up," I told him and we both nodded to each other.
I had heard of small groups of males like that before, the outcome was never pretty because they were always too few to do anything serious and eventually they did something stupid that got them labeled as 'bad bloods', or criminals in general, and they were hunted down and either imprisoned or executed.
I was hoping that no one on the ship was part of that minority.
