Somehow the next three months moved quickly. She watched as the new queen was elected. Padme sighed. Soon she could be with Obi-Wan. Just a few more months. She lay down in bed. The nights were the worst. She missed his touch, his tight embrace. Padme looked at the phone. Maybe just a phone call? She got up and walked over to it. It rang and rang and finally went to voicemail. Padme hung up the phone, her face fallen. She had hoped to talk to him. There was a knock at her door, “My queen?” “Yes, Sabè?” “You have a visitor.” “This late? Who is it?” “A gentleman caller.” “I’m engaged, Sabè.” “So am I,” Obi-Wan Kenobi smiled as he stepped up behind Sabè. “Good evening, my queen.” “Obi-Wan!” Sabè sidestepped quickly as Padme flew into his arms, a wide grin on her face. “Now this is a very pleasant surprise.” “I’m glad you think so,” he hugged her tightly to him as Sabè exited. “Nomi and I were headed out on a mission and we had to go past Naboo, so she suggested stopping by for a visit.” “So you’re here for the night?” “Yes,” he leaned down to kiss her, “I’ve missed you.” “I just called you and was most saddened that you didn’t answer the phone. But now…I’m glad,” she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Hold me?” “All night long,” he smiled, picking her up and carrying her to the bed. “You have too many clothes on, my love.” “Not for long,” he breathed, laying her down and leaning down to capture her lips. Padme moaned into his mouth as her hands removed his belt. When morning broke Obi-Wan rolled off of her, “We never even got to sleep,” he breathed. Padme smiled and leaned over to kiss him, “I’ll live. That was most definitely worth being tired today. I love you so much, Obi-Wan. I miss you.” He stretched and turned onto his side to face her, “What can we do? The new queen isn’t anointed for another month and a half. Then you’ve got the transition period.” “Maybe you could come to see the swearing in ceremony?” She let her hands run through his chest hair, committing each contour of his body to memory. “That could be enjoyable,” he grinned, one hand moving over her body while his other reached to cup her breast. “I will see if I can manage that.” “Can you stay long enough to actually get some sleep?” Padme pushed him onto his back. “I just miss you being around. I really cherish the time we’ve spent together.” “I do too,” he grinned. “Unfortunately, I do have to leave. I have a duty.” “I know,” she sighed and lay her head on his chest, “can we at least shower together?” “I have time for that. And breakfast,” he caressed her cheek gently, “you’re so beautiful.” “Obi-Wan,” she blushed. He just shook his head, “You really are, Padme. I am so lucky. You’re absolutely breathtaking, no matter what you wear.” She smiled and leaned up to kiss him, “Or don’t wear,” he added, caressing her side down to her hip. She laughed and finally sat up, climbing out of bed, “Let’s go shower. We don’t have much time.” “Sounds good to me,” he followed her to the bathroom. After breakfast she walked them to the ship. Nomi climbed aboard and Obi-Wan turned to her, “Someday, my queen, we won’t have to do this.” “You’ll always be going off on missions, Obi-Wan.” “But we’ll be able to be together more,” he kissed her, “and I will be able to do that more often.” “That’d be nice,” she grinned. “I cannot wait to marry you,” she pulled him to her and deepened the kiss, “I love you, my loyal Jedi.” “I love you too.” “Be safe, and may the Force be with you.” “With you as well, my queen,” he gave her one final, passion-filled kiss. “Take care and I will see about stopping by when we return to Coruscant.” “I’d like that,” she pulled away, “maybe then we can actually sleep.” He laughed as he stepped aboard the ship, “I look forward to it, my queen.” “As do I, my love.” Padme watched as the door shut and the ship took off. “Be careful,” she whispered as the ship streaked up into the sky. “Master, what will happen when you marry Padme?” “I’m kind of a test case, Nomi. So I can’t really tell you. Master Yoda and the Council are just playing it by ear as we go along, I think.” “It’s going to be very hard, going as back and forth as you will be.” “We’ll figure out a way to make it work. We will. Because we love each other and are willing to do anything to make it work.” “I’m very happy for you, Master,” Nomi smiled as she turned back to the controls, “we’re approaching our target.” “Excellent,” he stood up and put his cloak back on, “Are you ready?” “I am,” she nodded, “diplomacy missions do become quite boring, though.” “You want some action? Trust me, diplomacy is preferred to violence.” “I know that Master,” Nomi said, “I just mean that I would rather have the situation different from our usual efforts. I am sorry if it came across as though I would prefer violence. I would not.” “I know that,” Obi-Wan smiled, “I just want you to watch what you say.” Their mission was surprisingly short. He was glad. They were ready to leave within a day. They headed back toward Coruscant before they received a transmission, “Grave danger, Queen Amidala is in. Need your help, she does. Go to Naboo, you will. Bring her to Coruscant, you must,” Yoda ordered. “Yes master,” he said. “We’re nearly to Naboo now. We’ll change courses,” he turned to Nomi who nodded. “See you soon, we will. May the Force be with you.” They landed on Naboo where they were met by Captain Panaka, “As per your request Queen Amidala is safe in her rooms at present, Master Jedi. We can take you there immediately.” “Thank you Captain,” Obi-Wan said, moving quickly into the palace. “Nomi, I want you to search the grounds with Captain Panaka. I will head to see her.” Panaka leaned in, “Her handmaiden is rather…irate at being under the protection of the Jedi.” “Handmaiden Padme?” “Yes.” “I’ll deal with her. Where is she?” “The handmaiden’s quarters.” “I’ll stop there first. I can’t have her interfere in our relationship with the queen,” Obi-Wan headed upstairs to the handmaiden’s quarters and closed his eyes before entering. “Obi-Wan?” He entered to feel Padme’s arms wrap around his neck, “I would have been nicer if I knew they were sending you to me.” “We were closest,” he smiled. “So now that you’re protecting me I’m safe, right?” “We’ll see. Am I sleeping with the queen or the lovely handmaiden?” Padme frowned. “You’ll have to sleep with the queen, won’t you,” she huffed. She didn’t want Sabè to touch her lover. “Yes I do, my sweet. It’s safer if you’re not the queen tonight. Much safer.” “Tell Sabè if she touches you or kisses you that I will never forgive her,” Padme turned away, fighting back tears, “and I will never forgive you either.” He wrapped his arms around her, “You know I have to.” “I do,” she pouted. “Perhaps tomorrow you can switch back. But I can’t let anything bad happen to you. Nomi will stay here, and I’ll stay in the Queen’s bedroom with Sabè. It won’t be the end of the world.” “It just feels like it will be.” “I won’t do anything untoward, my sweet. Good night,” he leaned down and kissed her. “Sleep well.” He walked down to the Queen’s room and tapped on the door. Sabè opened it in Padme’s nightgown. “My love, I’ve missed you,” she said, keeping true to being the decoy. “And I you,” he managed to say, a lump forming in his throat. Sabè hugged him. He turned his head to see Padme down the hall, tears in her eyes. He sighed, “This is harder than I imagined,” he whispered. “I know. I feel terrible about having to do this. She is my best friend and I am betraying her like this.” Obi-Wan nodded. They entered the bedroom and closed the door and he felt his heart break seeing Padme’s face. He turned to Sabè, “This is to protect her.” “That doesn’t change how guilty we feel, Obi-Wan,” Sabè shook her head. “Perhaps we should switch back. It will be easier for you two.” “But more dangerous.” Sabè shook her head again, “She’s safest with you. If we had known you would be coming, we would not have switched.” He closed his eyes and sighed, wrapping an arm around her, “I feel so conflicted right now.” “Then let me make the decision for you,” Sabè leaned up and kissed his cheek, “I’ll be back.” “No you won’t,” he smirked, “I know what you’re doing.” “Do you object?” “She shouldn’t.” “She’s safest with you, Obi-Wan. You need to guard her. She won’t let anyone else.” Sabè exited and walked down the hall to switch. Padme returned roughly ten minutes later. Obi-Wan had already removed his tunic, placing his lightsaber near the bed to get it if he needed it quickly. He turned to see his fiancée in the same nightgown Sabè had worn, but for some reason it took his breath away this time. She smiled and leaned up to kiss his cheek. “I love you,” she whispered. “Let’s go to bed.” He nodded and they slid into her bed, the lights turning off as he used the Force. He pulled her to him and kissed her passionately, “I love you Padme,” he whispered. “I was so jealous of her…” “I know,” he kissed her, letting his hands move over the nightgown, “let me hold you.” “Just hold me?” “I’m exhausted,” he said, “in the morning I should be good to go though,” he kissed her once more, sweetly, “but first we need sleep.” “Okay,” she sighed, closing her eyes and laying her head on his chest. When she woke Obi-Wan was still asleep. She smiled and kissed his cheek. “Oh Jedi protector of mine, wake up,” she nuzzled his neck, “I need you.” “You always need me,” came his response, his eyes still closed. “I could always get dressed and head down to breakfast,” she made to get up and he pulled her down, rolling on top of her. “No you can’t,” he shook his head. “Not until I’m done with you.” “I can’t wait,” she leaned up to kiss him. “Good thing you don’t have to,” he slid his hands under her nightgown, pulling it over her head. Her retort was stopped as his mouth captured hers in a hungry kiss. They made it down to breakfast a little over an hour later. Nomi was there with a few of the handmaidens. “Did you sleep well, your majesty?” “I did,” she smiled, squeezing Obi-Wan’s hand. “It’s always better when my love has returned.” “At least it was peaceful,” Obi-Wan said, pulling out her chair before sitting down next to her. “Obi-Wan, we leave for Coruscant today, correct?” “Yes. Your things will need to be packed, your majesty.” “I’ll take care of it…” “Your majesty,” Sabè said, “we will take care of the packing. You have other things to worry about, like your journey to Coruscant.” “I’ve already figured out how to ensure your safety,” Obi-Wan smiled. “We’ll place the Queen on one ship, the handmaidens and the Jedi on the other.” “Sounds like an excellent plan, Master,” Nomi smiled at him. “I am nothing if not a good strategist.” “You’re alot more than that,” Padme whispered before beginning to eat. “Thank you,” he whispered into her ear. After breakfast her things were packed. They would leave that evening. Obi-Wan and Nomi sparred in the gardens while Amidala talked with the future queen, explaining the few things they had yet to cover. Obi-Wan turned his lightsaber off, “Are you ready?” “Yes, Master,” Nomi smiled. “Good. Go make sure the ships are prepared.” “Of course,” she nodded and bowed before exiting. “My love, what are you plotting?” “Nothing,” Obi-Wan shrugged as Padme approached him. “Are you ready?” “Yes. I thought we could have some time alone before…” He kissed her, “we will be so far apart when you’re on your ship and we are on the other one. I will miss you.” “And I you, my Jedi warrior. I should go get changed, I suppose.” “A wise choice, my queen,” he leaned down and kissed her cheek. “We’ll be waiting.” When they arrived at Coruscant Obi-Wan watched as the Queen’s ship exploded when it landed. Obi-Wan cursed and ran to the ship, Nomi pulling him away before he could get there. “Relax, master,” she said. “Of course,” he breathed deeply, dropping to his knees. Chancellor Palpetine stood, watching the spectacle. Obi-Wan sighed and stood up. “Excuse me, Chancellor. I must get the handmaidens into P-her majesty’s apartment,” he looked down, sighing heavily. “Certainly, young Jedi,” Palpetine nodded in understanding as Obi-Wan escorted the handmaidens inside.
