~~~~~2008~~~~~
********** The week leading up to the wedding was a very busy one, and the jobs were mostly big ones. For two weeks after the wedding Peter would be on his honeymoon, so all the jobs deemed significant enough to require four Ghostbusters were crammed into one week. There was also last minute wedding tasks to complete. Ray was going to be the best man while Oscar was given ring bearing duties, but Egon and Winston were ushers. That meant he had to be fitted for a tuxedo. He was more concerned about Rebecca than he was about a tuxedo. He’d had to repair six traps that had shorted out, two proton packs and he’d had to run a routine maintenance check on the containment center. He’d barely had time to sleep, much less try to come up with a way to help Rebecca. That didn’t mean he wasn’t constantly thinking of her. In his mind he felt twenty years old again, but the brutal work week wouldn’t let him forget he was thirty-five. Finally, the day of the wedding came, and he was fairly certain he was more nervous than Peter was. When Rebecca arrived he felt considerably calmer, but only momentarily. She looked gorgeous but disheveled. She wore a periwinkle sundress with white polka-dots. It showed her long legs off, and the high heeled sandals she wore did the same. She wore her hair in a bun at the crown of her head, and tendrils of it corkscrewed around her face. Her son stood at her side. He was a tall, gangly teenager with wire framed glasses. He was dressed in dark gray slacks with a short-sleeved blue dress shirt. She looked tired, and the boy looked nervous. He was already much taller than his mother, but he walked almost in a stoop, as if he were uncomfortable with his height. "Hey, Spengs... I’d like you to meet Aiden, my son. Aiden, this is Dr. Egon Spengler. We were friends growing up. His family lived next door." She introduced them. The boy may have stooped, but he wasn’t shy. "Dr. Spengler, it’s an honor. I read your paper about race memories stored in the collective subconscious, and I have some questions to ask you about it... later, of course." The boy smiled. He had his mother’s smile, and it made Egon smile. "Of course. I’ll find you at the reception." Egon replied. ********** The day of the wedding I woke up feeling strangely at ease. I convinced myself that this was all going to work out. Besides, Peter had invited me. I wasn’t a scared teenager anymore, and I needed to be strong for my son. He deserved to know the full truth, and so did Egon. Setting things right with Peter was the first step. I was tired, but I dressed in one of my best dresses and fixed my hair. I probably looked a little frazzled, but that was okay. Aiden looked handsome, and I was more concerned about showing him off. When we’d arrived at the church, Egon hurried forward to greet us, and I did my best to stay calm for Aiden’s sake. Aiden made it easy, though. He immediately began talking shop with Egon. When Aiden realized he’d been rambling he stopped and gave Egon a smile. I was pleasantly shocked to see Egon smile back. The only time I’d seen a smile like that on Egon Spengler’s face was when I’d given him his first Twinkie. The smile infused me with a new confidence as Aiden and I were seated. "I can’t believe you never told me you know them." Aiden said once we’d settled in. "A mother needs her secrets." I teased him. He smirked at me exactly the way Egon smirked. "It wasn’t long before the ceremony started. Egon had seated us near the back, and, when he and Winston Zeddemore, the other usher, moved to be seated, Egon sat beside Aiden. I looked at them together and had to swallow back the lump in my throat. They looked like bookends, and anyone with eyes would be able to make the connection. Maybe a wedding wasn’t the best place for this to play out, but I didn’t have much of a choice now. Peter and Ray were the first to come out and stand at the alter. Peter looked more handsome than I’d ever seen him look, and he didn’t seem nervous at all. ********** Ray thought he might be more nervous than Peter, but he knew there was going to be a surprise guest. As Oscar and Lily, Janine’s and Louis’ fifteen month old daughter, toddled up the aisle all eyes were on them. Ray imagined them grown up, Ghostbusters, generation two. With that thought on his mind, he caught a glance of Egon. His felt his mouth hang open as he saw the teenager seated between Egon and Rebecca. Talk about generation two! He wondered if Egon had made the connection yet. He’d known Bec had a crush on Egon all those years ago, but he’d forgotten about it. He made himself pull his mouth shut as Dana started up the aisle. He managed a smile, but his mind was still reeling at the idea that Egon and Becca had... eww... he suddenly wished he had brain soap. He thought of Egon as a brother, and Becca was like his sister. The idea of them together grossed him out on an immature level, but, as an adult, he thought it was wonderful. Peter would have to forgive her now.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
