Their little tribe followed the red headed girl into the city's rotting underbelly. A gentle rain pelted down from above darkening the world to a near complete blackness. The girl seemed to be familiar with the back alleys and side streets. Pyode Jehdin followed her wary as ever scanning the roofs, the
police had thinned out as they'd left the city center. Though their trek had taken them into a more odious districts, ramshackle housing littering uneven streets, not a gravcar in sight. The girl had a knack for keeping them out of sight. Kara wondered at her life before her captivity.
"Do they have any clothing shops," asked Dutch
"Feet hurt?" asked Kara
"I didn't run naked through that wasteland for two months" He replied
"Jealous?" She asked
"I know a place." Said the girl
She led them down a sidestreet, there were some streetwalkers on the corner, they ignored the travelers keeping their noses to their own business, whatever level of legality it breached. Ka'ja'rand did his best to stay out of the rain. His shift suit sparked and crackled in and out every time a sizable droplet or stream from one of the buildings hit his head or shoulders. It was inconvenient. The Oomans continued
to lead him through their concrete jungle, he felt crowded on the ground level. a lower structure appeared on the right, he squared his feet judged the angle and with a running jump vaulted onto the roof. His feet cracked the tiles where he landed. Below his mate and the others looked up in his direction. Then proceeded down the corridor. He felt refreshed in the rain and deactivated his
shift suit shaking the water from his braids. A hunter must always be aware of his surroundings. He scanned the horizon from his perch then proceeded to the next building, he leaped again the low crunch of his sandaled feet crunching the roof below him.
In this fashion he continued to follow his pack for a few hundred meters before they stopped at a structure and began prying open the entryway. The rain intensified, dull thunder breaking the monotony of the drops on the wet rooftops. He covered them from above. There were no hostile males nearby.
Dutch went to the door, what kind of world was this? More than half the buildings even the businesses had simple latches without security systems much less reinforcing. He grunted under his breath and rammed the shotgun butt first into the door at the latch, its light wood frame shuddered. No alarm went off, he shook his head and hit it again this time putting his weight into it. The door splintered around the lock and he pushed it open with his bare foot. Kara and the others followed him in.Pyode Jehdin followed the girl into the store bringing up the rear. She checked her corner shouldering her rifle and half depressing the trigger before realizing the man with his arm outstretched in her direction was a mannequin with a digital display pda watch. Her brain clicked registering the target as dead. Kill she thought. She found herself walking through the department targeting the mock humans one by one, Kill, Kill, Kill. She smiled.
"Kara there's some work coveralls over here that will work nicely, good storage for extra ammunition." Said Sarah from down a row to the right.
The coveralls were a muted green jumpsuit with large cargo pockets. She squeezed into it, the fabric inside was insulated against the outside moisture. It felt good to be dry again. Though she again noted that like spacesuit jumpers they were designed for a less than feminine frame. She then moved to the mens shoe department. Dutch was there he'd already policed boots for himself, Sarah, and her. She smiled he would know her size. They were standard black military style, water proof, universal tread, breathable and matte black. She slipped into them brought the zipper up the side and tightened the buckles taunt. She felt like kicking a door in. The girl came over she'd found the women's department. She wore a pair of skin tight shorts which cut off to show the complete extent of her pale leg. Her hair was held back with several bands, she wore a fitted t-shirt made of a light synthetic material in a royal blue which clung to her like a second skin. Kara found her rather fetching. She looked at them with a kind of smirk, looked at their shoes with a frown. Her own were a pair of shoes with a non traditional sole, they were made so each toe was encapsulated in cloth, much like being barefoot yet still shod. Kara was envious.
"Show me where you found the shoes." She said
"Ok," Said the Girl
Pyode Jehdin followed her, she didn't move like a girl. Her stride was like that of a man, feet spaced to make the most of her stride, not awkwardly in line in the classic female saunter. Kara found it disconcerting based on her other dress. It didn't fit.
"You're a conundrum, you know that?" She said when they stopped at the rack, the girl looked at her odd.
"Why do you say that?" she asked
"You wear clothing that says attractive female, yet walk like you're on a mission, you shriek in terror one moment, then lead us expertly through the city as if you know it from the ground up." Kara lifted the shoes "And when presented with an entire department store full of footwear, you pick toe
shoes."
The girl smiled leaned in and kissed her full on the mouth. "Be as confused as you like, it's more fun to figure out a puzzle than have someone else solve it." She said
The kiss was as perplexing as anything else. Suddenly the girl latched onto her again, her bright red lips invading Kara's in a tide of moist warmth. Despite the aggressiveness of the advance Kara was surprised at how soft she was. Her lips were full, and she tasted of salt. The girl fumbled with the buckles and zipper on the jumpsuit hastily pulling it open. Karas breasts fell free of the restricting fabric. She was still to startled to move.
She'd been with Ka'ja'rand for so long that she'd forgotten what it was like to be with another human let alone a woman. With her mate everything was rough, immediate, hard. Here she found time to luxuriate in the slow softness of the girls lips, the warm wetness of her tongue caressing her breast, slowly circling her aureole then flicking the nipple gently against her teeth.
Kara bent to the pale expanse of neck and began to nibble on the girl grazing her with her teeth. Her breath was leaving her shallow, she felt slightly light headed. Then the mouth was gone as quick as it came, the accompanying hands sliding down her torso, fingertips pressing into her belly slightly like blunt claws. The mouth returned softly pressing and kissing her mound before sliding tentatively between her lips the girls tongue darting out to slide slippery against Kara's clit. The intensity was too much and she had to pull the woman away half gasping for breath.
“Why did you stop me?” Asked the girl
“We don't have time for one.” Said Kara
“You were close, I could tell.” Said the Girl
Kara just shook her head. “Later, I promise.”
She was too busy at the moment trying to figure out how to tell her mate about this.
“How does your father have his own spaceship?” Asked Kara
“My father's a manufacturer of wire connections for the Chevron Gravcar Company.” She said.
Having secured the shoes she stuffed them in one of the extra pockets on her jumpsuit. They walked through the departments to meet back up with Sarah and Dutch. The girl all the while bouncing up and down like a rabbit fiending for a race.
"Are we ready?" Lexi asked
Pyode Jehdin looked out the corner of her eye at the girl, who was she?
"Lead on oh confusing one." Said Kara
The girl positively bounced out the broken door.
He found himself looking down from his rooftop perch as his pack came out of the
building and back into the weather. The rain was slackening off and soon would stop completely, their cover was dwindling and the city still lay between them and escape. His mandibles twitched with impatience. He had to see his female to safety.
Faint scents wafted from below, the sweat, the dirt from the street, the filth of Oomanity. Yet there was a hint of something else. He took a deep breath, his mind combing the scents into their proper categories. He felt his mandibles flare out recognizing the musk for what it was. He felt a growl build in the back of his throat. If a lesser male was challenging his rights to his female he would take the offender's skull.
Down on the street level Kara came up beside their young guide, she was busy surveying another alley. She seemed hesitant, certainly more wary than she had been in the store.
"It'll be dawn soon" Said Lexi
"The pursuit has slackened, we shouldn't stop." Said Kara
"I know these streets, the police won't come here willingly."
"Yet you're hesitant, there's something else to worry about isn't there?"
"The gangs rule these streets." Said Lexi "Some are on friendly terms with me, others..."
"Street thugs?" Asked Kara
"Warriors." Said Lexi
Kara shook her head. Lexi led them down alley's, side streets, through yards of row housing. The city began to dwindle, the larger structures were further and fewer. Kara was impressed with both their guide and their progress. They were in a narrow alley, the back doors of row housing to their right to their left a raised fence and the back yard of an industrial park. Kara felt prickles down
her spine, from ahead a group of twenty to thirty people filed into the alley from one of the houses.
At a glance they carried weapons ranging from knives, guns, and clubs. They were tattooed, some with their heads shaved, more than one pierced with large metallic bars in their arms.
"Oi,Sparrow, whither thou goest?" Asked the leader.
He wore a pistol on a cross-draw on his left hip, his pants were a muted khaki, on his right he had a long knife with a wooden handle capped with what Kara thought was brass. He wore a vest rather than a shirt, black leather, open in the front to show a chest tattoo, which was either a fish or a dragon by the
scales. His hair was held back by a ponytail it was dark almost black in color.
"Just passing through James" Said Lexi
"That you may do, you've the run of the streets eh Sparrow?" He said with a chuckle "Them, I do not know them" e pointed at the group. "Who would they be then?"
"They're friends of mine," She said
"Friends they do be, but not yet yours," He said, then looked straight at Kara "and the one thinks to kill me." He smiled absently fingering the pommel of his knife. "What dangerous friends you have my little Sparrow, mayhaps these friends of yours are the reason for the police's movements in my city?"
"A lot of people seem to think this is their city." Said Kara
"That be true, we were on our way to see to one of them before your intrusion."
He said His smile reached his eyes, the kind of manic flickering of great excitement. He was unpredictable. Kara figured at worst guess she could kill half group with her remaining rounds in her rifle. She hefted it slightly, testing it's weight. His grin split open.
"I want that knife." Said Pyode Jehdin
"Shit" Said Dutch
The man drew the blade deftly. It was edged on both sides, curved on one with a straight spine. The man spun it around and caught it. It looked very sharp.
"There's no need..."
"Shut up" Said Kara, She unslung the rifle and handed it to Lexi, it was heavy and she sagged a bit under the weight. Kara scanned the roof, made out her mate and signaled him to remain still. She then moved ahead of the pack to the empty space between the groups.
"Would I be wrong to guess I don't get a blade?" She asked
"You asked for mine, I'm going to give it to you." He said
"Honor for my clan." She said
He held the blade in a fighters grip with the tip pointed out from his hand. To close distance and minimize his vulnerability he moved forward low in a half crouch . She kept her hands open and felt
the grit of the ground through her toe shoes. It was slick, the rain and the offal on the alley creating a kind of paste mashed by countless travelers. She stood erect and let him come to her.
"You make this easy," He said noting her stillness
He whipped the blade to slash her at the waist. She sidestepped to his right clearing the blade bringing her hand like a spear into his abdomen. Instead of crumpling he merely flinched bringing his blade hand back in a wild arc. Kara pressed the gap, his elbow collided with her chest. In the same moment she brought her forehead down like a hammer on his face, she felt the pop as his
nose broke and used the distraction to grab the knife hand, this proved a mistake his free hand turned into a fist slamming into her ribs and knocking her backward. She maintained her vise grip on his wrist and bringing him down to the paved alley floor on top of her.
As she hit the pavement the world flickered for a moment then came back into focus. The gangleader was crouched over her the knife coming down in a blur toward her chest. Her hands flew grabbing his wrists and delaying the knife. He strained the blade shaking with his effort as he pushed it closer to her chest.
“You about to be killed by the baddest man on the planet.” He said
Kara smiled, she braced her shoulders and neck against the ground and brought her legs up pushing off the pavement. This tipped the man forward off balance as he was she jerked with all her strength flinging him to her side. The knife clattered to the pavement.
“I've eaten better men than you.” She said as lifted the weapon from the ground.
She was just squaring again when several things abruptly happened. The gang leader drew his pistol leveling it at her, and someone in the crowd threw what she thought was a rock, she caught it and threw it back before recognizing it was a grenade. The world erupted as she launched herself at the ground to avoid the shrapnel. Chaos ensued, the gang members which weren’t instantly killed by the explosion produced weapons of various varieties and began to open fire randomly through the smoke. Trash in the alley ignited and acrid black smoke began to obscure vision. Soon to their left they could hear the blare of sirens and police broke from the other end of the alley and started firing at the crowd. From above Ka'Ja'rand's plasma caster came to life with a roar the round exploded in the middle of the advancing law enforcement. In that moment of chaos the Pyode Jehdin closed the distance between herself and the gang leader. Kicking in an outside crescent she sent the pistol flying into the air and stepped into him with her left elbow smashing his jaw and sending him sprawling on all fours.
She stepped over to him without pity, bullets and explosions echoing around her the flames casting her in an eerie glow against the backdrop of the smoke. She knelt drawing his head back by the ponytail. She looked him in the eye as she plunged his own blade through the muscle just beyond his left clavicle an into his heart. She paused only a moment to remove the weapon's sheath from his belt and then ran to where Lexi was crouched. Without a word she pulled the girl from where she was sitting and dodged into a narrow crossways between the housing. Behind them they heard an explosion and a the bark of a shotgun.
“Wait for us!” said Dutch from down the hall
The bricks around them vibrated as another explosion went off back at the scene of the battle. Kara took stock of her little tribe. Sarah and Dutch seemed none the worse for wear. Lexi was smiling, a feral glint in her eye.
“Don't just stand there grinning!” Said Dutch “Get us out of this mess.”
“Right, umm...” She said looking around for a moment, “This way!”
As she led them on a twisting path down alleys an byways the sound of gunfire grew faint in the distance and then dwindled all together. Kara meanwhile was becoming concerned, she'd been scanning the roofs and hadn't seen sign of Ka'Ja'Rand since they'd left the battle. She needn't have worried.
He'd stood on the precipice of the building watching the scene below as his mate had challenged the dominant male of the other pack. He'd felt her pride in selecting the bull the others seemed agitated and distracted however he'd noticed the other Oomans approaching from the rear of the group he primed his plasma caster and waited for a good shot.
Adrenaline coursed through his veins as Pyode Jehdin squared off with the male in hand to hand combat. The moment came with the Oomans turned on their distracting noise makers and the two groups opened fire on one another. He chose the newcomers as they seemed better equipped and fired his father's weapon into the advancing warriors. The molten bolt ripped a group of them apart. The battle intensified.
In that moment below he saw his mate pose her defeated foe for the deathblow. Around her gunfire ricocheted of the walls of the buildings yet she delivered the stroke sure and calm. Paya watched her take the triumph and honor of the bull male's death. Yet she didn't secure the body to make a trophy. He realized that she had not the strength to move the male from the fight. With that he jumped down to the street level. He was cloaked so only a chance shot would hit him in the smoke of the din. He took the body by the foot and began dragging it into the alley where his mate had gone. When he found himself in the alley however, he found that the rest of his pack had disappeared.
