Chapter Nine
Harley’s eyes slowly opened feeling a cold washcloth touched to her
face. Her eyes shifted to find that it was Crane who was attending to her.
“You’re going to be sore. Don’t try to move to quickly.” He instructed
moving the cool cloth over her skin. “The convulsions will have made your body
ache.” He touched the cloth to her neck dabbing lightly.
There was a look of concern in his eyes even though he attempted to keep
his stoic expressionless exterior. Apparently she had been unconscious for quite
a while and the convulsions had gotten worse and more violent before they
started to subside. Crane would never admit it to her or anyone else, but he
suddenly found himself actually caring about weather she lived or died.
“We’re adding a new protocol to your daily routine.” He said
reaching over and picking up a bottle of pills. “Take one of these, every 12
hours each day.” He took one out and placed it on her tongue before handing
her a glass of water. Harley obediently took it immediately before handing him
back the glass. “They should keep effects like this from happening again.”
“Have we started distributing the medication yet.” She asked, knowing
that they were about to when she passed out.
“Yes. They have all been sent to their respective locations and the
dealers will be immediately dispersing them into the streets.” He half smiled,
“It won’t be long before the masses of Gothom city will be extremely
susceptible to suggestion.” He ran his finger along her cheek, “Just like
you.”
Crane paused a moment as he looked into her deep green eyes. There was
something bewitching about her, even if her eyes were glassy as if she was
nothing more then sleepwalking. Then, he leaned down and kissed her deeply, as
she closed her eyes and obediently kissed him back. He opened his eyes and
leaned back sighing a little as he gazed down at her once more. “One drawback
to your newfound sanity, Jane. I find myself a bit aggravated we managed to get
your nymphomania under control.”
Her eyes just stared up at him, as if waiting for instructions one what
she was supposed to be doing. Crane looked at her again, and couldn’t help but
be engulfed by those beautiful green pools. “I imagine,” He said slipping
his hand underneath her head, “That I can manage.” He said pulling her up a
bit as he hungrily kissed her again.
Harley, however involuntary her motions were, was still in there. Still
feeling as though she’d rather break this mans teeth and neck then share his
bed. But there was nothing she could do. It was like a nightmare she was unable
to wake from, and all she could do is watch.
Bruce Wayne stood starring at his TV screens watching the news reports on
the growing Chaos in the streets. He shook his head seeing a number of things
that didn’t seem to connect to one another.
The Joker had a tendency to leave calling cards wherever he struck. It
wasn’t hard to know which of the violent acts belonged to him and which
didn’t. He had a flare for causing extreme disruption for whatever twisted
purpose there was for such destruction in his mind.
The sudden disappearance of many Drug Addicts that had been on the
street, as well as others who had known drug problems as if they never existed
or they migrated somewhere else. They simply disappeared as if the face of the
earth. It had Scarecrow written all over it.
Besides the individual chaos, separate attacks by the Joker and
Scarecrow, there seemed to be clashes between the two all over the place. As if
there was a war raging between the two master criminals. A skeptic might say
that they didn’t see a problem with that. Let the criminals wipe each other
out. However the problem lay with the innocent civilians that were getting
caught in the crossfire. Not to mention the millions in collateral damage they
were causing.
Bruce found himself almost sent completely back to square one with
Gothom. Things were worse then ever, and everything was out of control. Now
things weren’t just about money. These were personal vendettas, not even
business ventures. The mob itself couldn’t even try to compete with this level
of activity, as their interests lay with power, and yes even money.
“Things are getting worse, aren’t they, Master Wayne.” Alfred said
entering the room. Bruce sighed and gave a nod.
“These two are going to end up leaving all of Gothom a wasteland in the
wake of their madness.” He admitted.
“What do you plan to do?” Alfred inquired.
“I think the answer is pretty clear.” He said, “I have to get them
off the streets. Once their in custody their men will disband looking for work
else ware, by the time they get out again, if ever, they’ll have to start
again from scratch.”
“I have a feeling that’s going to be easier said then done, Master
Wayne.”
“Maybe. Maybe not. You said it yourself. Harley Quinn is the key.”
Bruce turned off the TV screens and left the room heading for the Bat Cave.”
Harley stood in the office that looked out over the warehouse, watching
the mass of drug addicts that had all gathered mill about down below. They were
mostly dazed and confused, not having any real direction just knowing that they
were supposed to come here.
“Wonderful isn’t it?” Crane’s voice said as he appeared next to
her. “They maybe the unwashed, drug addict, lower lower class of Gothom . . .
but it won’t be long before they will be a force to be reckoned with.” He
smiled, “You should be proud, Jane. The success this far can be attributed to
you, and your leadership skills. Keeping the Joker and his men away from our
operations. Even I’m impressed with the level of initiative you’ve shown.”
Crane wrapped his arm around Harley pulling her closer to his body.
However, when he did he found her pushing him away with a hard shove. Crane
frowned when she did this. “What is it.” He asked directly.
“You were standing to close.” She said darkly. Crane arched a brow at
this. This was the first time she had talked back to him in weeks, let alone
pushed him away for any reason.
“Oh?” He said starring at her.
She sighed and looked at him with her arms crossed, “And another thing.
If I am so valuable an asset to you, I think it’s only reasonable that I be
given my own room. Not have to share yours.”
Suddenly, Crane grabbed her face and slammed her back, flat against the
desk. His hand was like a vice around her throat, leaving her barely able to
breathe. Reaching into his pocket he took out a syringe and pulled the cap with
his teeth. Then he stabbed her in the neck injecting the fluid. He had been
anticipating this. There was a possibility at some point he would have a problem
with her staying under his control.
He still held her by the throat until her eyes started to flutter into
the back of her head. Finally, her body went limp and he released her throat,
rubbing the spot where he had stabbed her to spread the medication faster,
throwing away the syringe. “I had a feeling that this was going to happen. But
I half expected to find you sucking down lollipops and playing with dolls. Not
becoming a bitchy little minx.”
Taking her jaw in his hand he turned her head from left to right, then
checked each of her eyes. “Now that I know the signs, I’ll be able to head
off these episodes before they happen.” Harley was quite unconscious, but for
some reason Crane seemed to be compelled to talk to her anyway. “You stay here
and rest.” He said putting on his Scarecrow mask and turning on the voice
distorting device. “I have an underestimated class of Gothom’s citizens to
turn into my own little private army.”
Batman had been tracking Crane’s movements through one of his dealers
that worked for him. He wasn’t a very good drug pusher as he got his
deliveries the same time and place every week. Of course there were criminals in
Gothom who still couldn’t break old habits when the police and law enforcement
authorities would simply look the other way if you greased their palms a bit.
Once the drop was made, Batman quickly set a tracking device on the
delivery man, and simply followed the movements he made.
It was nearly dawn before the supplier made his way out of the city and
back towards the commercial district. Keeping a close watch, Batman followed him
into the building that several individuals also returned to after a full night
of drug distribution.
Carefully and quietly, the dark figure moved in the shadows of the
building, seeing the crowd of men below. It seemed as though they were being
trained for something, although it was unclear what. He decided to take a closer
look.
After a while, when he had gathered the information he needed about the
goings on of the place, he continued to look about searching the rooms and
seeing what else he could dig up.
He came to a stop when he found the room where the young lady he had been
hoping to find was laid out sleeping on the bed. Closing the door behind him to
avoid any unwanted surprises, he walked over and examined her. There was a
massive bruise on her neck, and she was out cold.
Outside in the hallway, he heard voices and the sound of footsteps
approaching. Rather then risk alerting the whole building that they had been
found out, he quickly hoisted Harley up over his shoulder, and waited for his
chance to exit the building undetected.
Gordon stood outside Harley’s cell watching her silently. She was awake
now, and all she did was sit on her bunk with her back absolutely straight and a
glassy look in her eyes, her hands still handcuffed together. Every once in a
while she would blink slowly, but she never moved other then that.
“Anything interesting today Commissioner?” The new DA asked as he
entered the cellblock.
“Besides our new statue over there? Not really, no.” Gordon said
finding her behavior, or lack there of, rather odd. “Is there anyway to move
her to a medical ward? Or even one at the city mental institution?” He asked.
“Forget it. She’s escaped from them both, and I have no intention of
letting her do it a third time.” The DA said. “She knows the ins and outs of
the Asylum far to well, and she’s shown to be extremely devious in the past.
She can stay with the rest of the criminals in prison for now.”
“But there is something seriously wrong. This young woman never sat so
quiet and still a day in her life. Now, it’s like she’s frozen in place,
unable to move.” He said a bit concerned. “And she didn’t break out of the
Hospital, someone kidnapped her. There’s evidence now pointing to Dr. Crane as
her abductor.”
“I don’t care if she was abducted by the French Foreign Legion.
She’s a danger to the city, and she’s to remain behind bars so that
Gothom’s Citizens can be kept safe.” The DA crossed his arms, “We’ve
lost two exceptional DA’s this year, and I don’t intend to be the third.”
“Looking for re-election by denying her proper medical attention
doesn’t seem politically sound.” Gordon mentioned still looking at Harley.
“The Scarecrow and Joker have done more damage then this little girl, and
there are still cries for them to be treated decently once we have them in
custody.”
The DA looked at Gordon, “Arguing with me about my orders isn’t a
real good way to get yourself reappointed as commissioner either.” The DA said
in a low tone.
Gordon sighed and gave a nod turning his eyes back to Harley.
The warehouse where Scarecrows operations were based was under heavy
attack by Joker and his gang. The two groups of henchmen clashed all over the
place, as others started to set fire to the buildings. Amidst all the chaos, it
wasn’t long before Joker and Scarecrow came face to face with each other.
“So where is she? Hmmm?” Joker said, “Where is your little play
thing? Not here to protect you from the big bad Joker this time?” He said
mockingly holding a knife in his hand, just out of sight so that Scarecrow
wouldn’t be able to see it. However, the Scarecrow wasn’t foolish, he knew
what the Joker would be armed with.
“She’s no longer in my care.” The Scarecrow answered, “In fact, I
suppose that you’re to blame for her running off where she could be abducted
again by law enforcement.” Scarecrow didn’t seem to particularly anxious to
keep this conversation going, “I don’t need her to take care of the likes of
you. Besides,” He began, “Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to bring a knife
to a gun fight?”
Within seconds, Scarecrow drew his gun and started to fire at the Joker.
Joker was quick on his feet and just barely missed being shot, as he dove behind
a metal structure to protect himself from being hit. Then, just as suddenly as
the gunfire started, the Joker popped up with his own handgun and started to
fire at the Scarecrow, causing him to take cover as well.
The Joker’s trademark laugh filled the silence in the room between
bursts of gunfire. Scarecrow couldn’t believe this was happening. Two
competing master criminals was turning out to be extremely bad for business.
“Just what is it you hope to accomplish Joker! I’ve told you I
don’t have her anymore! She’s gone!” Scarecrows distorted voice shouted as
both parties reloaded.
“Doesn’t quite absolve you of your sins does it?” Joker said with a
chuckle. “If it did . . . well . . . it doesn’t so be a good boy and come
out and play!”
Scarecrow rolled his eyes as the flip way Joker took everything. He sat
behind the boxes that he had taken cover with and sighed. Someone was going out
of this building in a body bag. He was trapped and Joker wasn’t relenting.
Just as he thought there was no chance of getting out of there alive, he spotted
a large drain grate just a few feet away next to the wall. It would be a tight
fit but just big enough for him to slip through. He grinned as he locked the
clip of his gun into place. “Jane’s best quality is her flexibility. Did you
know that?” Scarecrow shouted, “That combined with her nymphomania make her
an absolute adventure in bed!” Joker’s smile faded a bit, and darkened
somehow as he began to chuckle again.
“Like the new tricks I taught her do you?” He shouted back.
“Oh don’t worry, she was well acquainted with most of her moves long
before I was ever cast out as the owner of my mental hospital.” He said moving
towards the grate.
“Harley,” He said making it clear that he considered that to be her
name now, “Was far more fun with her passionate games with me then she could
ever be with you.” The Joker corrected, “The difference? She actually wanted
to be with me. It seems as though you can’t get a girl unless you tie them up,
and control their every move!” There wasn’t a reply from the Scarecrow this
time. The Joker paused for a moment listening finding that there wasn’t any
sound at all.
Joker pointed his gun around the fallen table he was using for cover,
before poking his head out slightly to see what was going on. But it was no use,
the boxes Crane had hidden behind were blocking his view. His whole body
twitched as he started to go out, before ducking back in. Not wanting to be
caught in a trap.
