  • Nix woke up to the sound of enraged cries; very similar to what she had heard when Blade and the other Predator brought her onto the ship. Her shoulder felt numb. Come to think of it, the rest of her limbs were slightly numb as well. The only thing that still pained her was her head. It was almost as if she had rammed herself head first into a brick wall. Her forehead felt as if it would split open at any moment.

The vision of Sam’s angry face and Cal’s resignation burned vividly still in her mind. How could Cal pull her son from her and in essence tell her that she wasn’t welcome there? Was it because she had kept her occupation from him? Why? Unhappy thoughts attacked her mind as she continued to wonder.

The woman groaned and tried to sit up, her hand going immediately to her head.

She felt a hand push her back down. Strangely enough, it felt almost like a human hand.

“Don’t get up. I just barely got your heart beating again, and from what I understand, you’ve been deprived of the things your body needs to sustain life. Just rest.” A female voice said above her. Nix opened her eyes and looked at the speaker.

Shock and recognition made her heart jump into her throat, and she heard a worried growl somewhere at her head. She could recognize that as the young Predator.

“Alexa Woods?” Nix said, forgetting completely for a moment the Cal’s betrayal.

The black woman smirked and nodded.

“The one and only. I take it you believed that cock-and-bull story that Weyland-Yutani fed the press? How long did they lie about the search for me?”

    Nix frowned.

“About six months until the story of you going missing fell out of the headlines. Rumors had been going around that you got whacked.”

    Lex nodded once.

“Mother fuckers. They sent a few B-class assassins my way and tried to kill me. I didn’t know until then that I had a guardian angel watching out for me.” She nodded at a gunmetal-grey-patterned Predator with dark leaf-green eyes. He was standing tensely away, obviously unhappy with the distance between himself and the beautiful black woman kneeling at Nix’s side.

“He is brother to the Yautja that I fought the queen serpent with. He got me out of there and took me aboard the ship. I didn’t mind. I couldn’t exactly go on with my normal life as if nothing had happened. Too much had happened.”

Nix watched the woman get to her feet and looked at the two hunters that were watching her so carefully.

Blade turned from her and shouted something in his native tongue at the group of Predators that seemed to be complaining.

Nix lifted her head to get a better look, but immediately lay back down after experiencing an overwhelming sense of vertigo.

“Ohh…” she moaned. It was nice not feeling the pain in her arm for once. She just wanted to know what the fuck was wrong with her head. And as her stomach twisted and twitched within her belly, she also hoped for something to eat.

Her fingers pressed against her temple, then drifted smoothly to the problem area, a burning on her forehead. She felt ridges of scar beneath the pads of her fingers that had not been there before. With a contemplative frown, she traced the line. It swirled and curled, a line sticking out of the bottom twist. She recognized it as the white huntress’ symbol.

“Hey!” Nix yelled weakly. The voices of the Predators were loud enough to shake the entirety of earth. She turned her head.

“Hey!” she yelled louder. She saw a strangely patterned Hunter turn to her. His skin was a sickly yellow-peach color, with red and orange patterning like a copperhead. Suddenly, his spear was in hand, and he was running at her with a roar.

Nix dropped her hand and braced herself. She could do nothing else in her numbed out state; she had discovered that when she had tried to move her toes. The action had been a lethargic one, and not easily done, like trying to swim through a solid mass of gelatin (Nix had done this at her High School senior party. She had also kissed Ben Vedhar, and lost her virginity in the back of his ’67 Chevy/Ford-Frankenstein pickup truck. It had been painful, highly uncomfortable, and she had mosquito bites in places she didn’t know she could get them by the end of the fiasco).

The Predator’s spear came down and with a jerk, stopped, a mere inch from Nix’s burning forehead.

Within another second, the offending alien was pulled back and Nix was hauled up by her good arm violently. A clawed hand wrapped around her neck, and another one secured itself on top of her head. The room had gone silent.

Blade stood feet away, eyes wide and staring at the symbol that was a vivid white against the Ooman woman’s deeply tanned skin. It was the symbol of Paya. Throughout their history, the symbol of the goddess guided them. Paya marked what was hers, and what she thought should be saved. The very first Xenemorph queen that they had ever come across had been marked by Paya, a sign of glorious hunts to come.

It was of the highest dishonor to kill what Paya had marked.

“She has been marked…how is this possible?” the elder asked, eyes narrowed to slits.

Blade looked at Li’ct-ha. The Youngblood was prying Nix from Sodlan’s grasp. The predator had been the newest appointed to the rank of Arbitrator, though he was not exactly the gentlest creature among them. Sodlan released the Ooman woman and Li’ct-ha wrapped his arms gently around her, holding her tightly to his side. Nix looked dazed, most likely from the shot of pain killers that the Youngblood had given her before he treated her wound. Blade knew the dizzy, numbing effect of the shot. He could only imagine how she would be feeling at the moment.

“Zazin! Do you know of this? The mark was not upon her brow when Li’ct-ha brought her in.” Sodlan said, pointing at the Ooman.

The other clan was watching with deep interest, and their Ooman was pressed tightly against the chest of predator she had pointed out before to Nix. Xyhax, he believed his name to be. He had his arms wrapped protectively around Lex, her head tucked beneath his jaw. Blade saw this and was reminded of an Ooman relationship. Where Yautja did not mate for life, the Ooman’s did, and most of the males prized their females.

While their kind was indeed capable of love, it was usually reserved for their mothers or their children. It seemed that Xyhax had found some sort of love in this Lex woman. As he looked at Nix, he had wondered if that would be possible between them. Unfortunately, Li’ct-ha had already attached his feelings to her, though he would be shamed to admit it, and that could present problems in the future.

“Zazin!” Sodlan asked him again. He looked at the Arbitrator.

“Nix claimed, while she was in the room, that a Yautja female that was pure white in appearance came to her, gave her furs to keep her warm, and left. She described Paya with such detail that you would have thought her to be raised knowing her, which is impossible. The only conclusion I have come to is that she has indeed seen Paya, and with her mark upon the Ooman’s brow, I believe it even more. Paya has chosen to keep her, and we are bound by honoring that.” Zazin replied, gesturing to Nix.

The large Yautja that had gone to attack her growled.

“She is prey! Why would she bear the mark of Paya? What is important enough about her that she should be bestowed such an honored gift?”

    Blade turned to him.

“Her worthiness resides in the stories that I have been telling you for the past many days. She is a brave warrior, worthy to carry our mark and now Paya’s. Only Great Paya knows what designs she has for this Ooman woman. We cannot presume even to guess!”

“But she is prey!” the Yautja yelled.

“And so is the first Kiande Amedha queen! She bears the mark of Paya and she opened one of the greatest hunts in history, and the beginning of many more! A less intelligent creature than the Oomans standing among us now! Is it so hard to believe that Great Paya would mark another prey species? We must stop thinking of the negative change to our lifestyle this could bring, and start thinking of what good this could bring us! Perhaps this Ooman woman is a queen of another kind! Perhaps she is the gateway to an even greater hunt then the Kiande Amedha!” Sodlan interjected before Blade could reply.

Murmurs went around the Yautja that were present. Li’ct-ha snarled low in his throat and the many implications such a claim could mean.

“If you mean to hook her in chains and breed her like the Kiande Amedha queen, it will not happen.” The Youngblood stated, holding Nix tighter against him. The woman winced, confusion lighting her features.

Sodlan scoffed. “That’s right...We would need a strong Ooman male…Well, I suppose if we could find a willing warrior to sire an abomination with this Ooman, breeding could be attempted. Maybe it’s not prey we are looking for, maybe a new breed of hunter.”

A collective shudder passed through the gathered Warriors.

“Or perhaps,” Blade said loudly, “We should stop attempting to discover Paya’s plans and let her work alone! I, for one, do not wish to invoke her wrath for messing with her chosen one, and being the one who brought her onboard, I refuse to allow her to be subjected to such an idea. I marked her, she is mine. If anyone will decide what to do with her, it will be me.” The Yautja raised his jaw and looked for anyone that would challenge him.

The elder lifted his hand to stop anyone from speaking.

“It has still not been decided what we will do with her. Moments before I would have rather kill her. If not for that mark upon her head, my Naganata would twist within her gut at this very moment.” He declared. Li’ct-ha shifted Nix behind him slowly, mostly hiding her from view.

“As to the decision making, you forget that you are in the line destined to meet my spear as well, Zazin, both you and that Youngblood that seems so distracted by that ugly creature he is hiding. If I wanted to, I could have all three of your skulls mounted on my trophy wall within the hour.”

“You would not dare, G’rit’e! She is the bearer of Paya’s mark! To kill her would mean the ultimate dishonor! Cetanu would crush your skull beneath his foot before he’d touch it with his blessed hands!” the elder of the other clan said.

G’rit’e’s mandibles twitched irritably as he glanced at the elder.

“Which is why she is still alive. I refuse to have that creature on my ship, marked or not. That is my decision. Zazin, you and the Youngblood are exiled from this clan, and Paya forbid we should ever meet again…Now, take your ship and leave.” He pointed towards the door.

Blade looked to the Youngblood. Li’ct-ha nodded once, scooped Nix into his arms and strode from the room, the older hunter following.

“And all of you! Leave my ship and take your stinking Ooman female with you! I am shamed to see such a distinguished warrior as Xyhax holding that despicable creature. Our foresires ashes would burn again if they ever knew how their traditions were being changed by the letting of prey into our ranks. Be gone!”

Nix nuzzled into the Predator holding her. The large creature purred gently at the movement as they walked down the misty corridor.

“What happened?” Nix asked drowsily. She wanted to sleep. Her head was pounding, and though the numbness in her limbs was receding, she was overtaken with exhaustion. She had tried to watch what was going on as best as she could, but she had gradually felt worse and worse. She had been vaguely aware of the young predator shifting her behind him, his arm still around her. All she knew was whatever happened, they were no longer welcome on the ship. That had been apparent by the leader pointing at them and then the door.

At least she was still alive. Did she want to be alive? Didn’t she want to be with Cal and Sam?

At the moment, Nix was unsure. She was upset with Cal. He hadn’t wanted her there. He had tried to grab Sam, and then he let the Huntress take her away. Did she want to be with him? No. Not right now. She needed more time.

And what about the white huntress? What had she wanted with Nix? Why was Nix so important that she would drag her from death?

“We have been exiled.” Blade replied, walking along their side now.

“Where will we go?” she asked.

“Somewhere else. I do not know where, but somewhere else. Somewhere where you will be safe.”

Nix made a humming sound and closed her eyes, listening to the heartbeat of the Youngblood.

“What is your name?” she whispered, opening her eyes to look up at the Hunter carrying her?”

    “His name is Li’ct-ha.”

Nix tried to pronounce it, but it came out slurred and wrong in her tiredness, and she giggled. Her mind wasn’t working. She always got giggly when she was too tired.

    “I think I’ll just call him…Teddy.”

Li’ct-ha looked down at her, the ridge above his left eye cocking upwards.

“Like a teddy bear. My Teddy.” She closed her eyes and fell asleep almost immediately. My Teddy, she had said. Li’ct-ha felt himself glow inside.

Blade looked at the Youngblood, his mandibles forming into their kind’s smile.

“You have just been given your Ooman name. An honor has been given to you today, Teddy.”
