Aislinn kneeled before the two boys on the shore speaking to them with a
smile saying her goodbyes as they were going to live with a family that had been
arranged for them. The original plan was to send them to an orphanage but
Aislinn couldn’t bare the thought of it. One of the members of the crew whose
wife was barren, knew that she would be anxious to have two sons to raise and
arrangements were made to have the boys sent to live with her so that they could
grow up and have a real family.
They were completely healthy now, their infections were gone and their
color was pink and their eyes were bright. Aislinn wasted no time in sewing them
new clothes, making sure they were trimmed, neat and clean. Wrapping her arms
around them they hugged each other goodbye as she sent them with their escort
who was taking them to their new home.
She watched as they rode away and kissed her fingers gently blowing the
kiss after them waving as they disappeared out of sight. When they were gone,
James walked over to her. “Are you alright?” He asked wrapping an arm around
the young woman. She nodded and smiled.
“They’ll have a good life. Rawlin’s is a good man, and he speaks of
his wife often. A pirate’s life is no life for children.” The Admiral half
smiled.
“It’s no life for anyone who wants to live without getting their neck
stretched.” He offered her his arm and led her back onto the ship since they
would be once again setting sail before to long.
Aislinn came down the stairs to the galley deck walking to the door
smiling politely at the cook. “Would it be alright if I had an apple?” She
asked.
“Of course. Help yourself any time you’d like.” The cook said
arching a brow. It was unusual that someone asked. Usually they just took what
they wanted as far as apples went from the barrel and went along their marry
way.
“Thank you.” She said and went searching for the apple barrel. Coming
to it, she opened the lid and took one putting it back. Heading back towards the
stairs, she paused hearing a group of the men talking and laughing. Curiously,
she walked around the stairs to see what was going on. Taking a bite of her
apple she quietly approached the group of men.
One of them noticed her and quickly stood from their seat, and they all
quickly stood as well. “Oh no please.” She said walking closer. “Don’t
get up. I was just wondering what you were all doing?” She said curiously.
“Just visitin’ lass.” One of them said.
“I didn’t mean to disturb you. I heard you while I was passing by and
you all sounded so enthusiastic.” She said with a smile.
“Would you like to join us miss?” Another said. Aislinn paused not
sure what she should say. She had a feeling that James wouldn’t approve, but
these men weren’t on duty and they seemed like they were having such a good
time. She looked around before taking another bite of her apple and anxiously
accepting the seat that was offered in the circle.
James was writing a letter by candlelight when he heard a noise at the
door. It was a strange noise, like a cat scratching at a kitchen door trying to
gain entrance. Then it seemed like something was batting at the door handle
every now and then. Putting his quill down, he stood and walked over turning the
handle. The door threw open as Aislinn fell in having been leaning all of her
weight on it, to the floor.
Needless to say James was startled and looked down at her. When she
started to get up, he quickly reached down and helped her to her feet. However
he found that she was having trouble staying on them. She swayed back and then
forward as her arms seemed to flay about. “Oh, hello James.” She said her
eyes a bit glassy. “Is the ship moving a bit roughly today?”
Norrington starred at her for several moments, before reaching up and
grasping her chin slightly to hold her face in place as he leaned down closer to
her mouth and smelled her breath. The smell told everything and he rolled his
eyes slightly as he reached down picking her up before she fell and hurt
herself. “How much did you drink.” He asked carrying her over to the bed and
laying her down.
She sat up a little, “Did you have some too?” a bit of amazement in
her voice. “I’ve never tasted anything like it . . . its sweet isn’t it?
What is it that the men drink that taste like that?” James reached up and
pushed her back down folding her arms across her chest trying to keep them from
wildly moving about all over the place.
“Something that should have never passed your lips. Honestly, Aislinn
can I not leave you to wonder the ship on your own anymore?” He said trying to
keep her still. She looked at him a moment and started to giggle. Norrington
could see that meaningful conversation wasn’t going to be possible at this
moment in time. “How much did you have, can you remember.”
“Why do you wear that?” She asked pointing at his wig. “It looks
silly you know. You look much better with out it.” James smirked a bit folding
her hand back down on her chest. It was getting late.
“Lay, still.” He instructed. Then he got up and went over removing
his wig and other outer clothing as well as boots. Aislinn on the other hand was
having trouble doing what she was told. She felt like there was fire inside of
her, energy crawling just under her skin, and hot. It seemed very hot for some
reason. Reaching up she started to tug at the laces at her neck trying to loosen
them. Frustrated she sat up and untied the ribbons of her dress, making sort
work of it and tossing it to the floor.
James removed his cuff links putting them away. When he turned around
taking off his neckerchief he paused a little caught off guard to see
Aislinn’s inhabitation’s that she usually was plagued with, pretty much had
all disappeared. “Are . . . you alright?” He asked feeling as though his
words were stumbling over his tongue as his eyes were fixed on her.
“It’s just so hot in here, isn’t it?” She said as she took off
her last bit of clothing tossing it with the others before lying back down
completely bare down to the skin. The Admiral just stood there dumbstruck his
eyes fixed on the naked young woman lying on the linens stretched out.
“. . . . better?” Was the only word he seemed to be able to muster.
Aislinn didn’t answer and just stretched her arms over her head with a moan,
causing James jaw to drop slightly as he quickly turned his eyes away. Quickly
reaching for her nightgown he took it over to the bed and put it over her so she
could put it on. “Aislinn, make an effort to remember how much you drank.”
He said again seriously starting to wonder.
“James? Everything feels so hot. Why is that? Is it because of the
drink?” She asked curiously. He sat down on the bed next to her and took up
the nightgown to try and help her put it on since she hardly seemed interested
in it at all.
“Grog is nothing like Wine, Aislinn. I’ve asked you not to socialized
with the crew, and I certainly never imagined that you were going to go off
drinking with them.” He said taking her hand trying to put it into one of the
sleeves. “Yes, it is the cause of your feeling so strange at the moment.”
The young woman seemed to not hear his words as she sat up looking at his eyes
and studying his features as he spoke. “When it wears off your certainly going
to realize what a mistake . . .” his words were halted when she placed a soft
kiss on his lips. Norrington was once again caught off guard, as she had never
been the first one to initiate any sort of affection of any kind.
James looked into her eyes feeling her fingertips touch his throat and
then trace the line of the collar of his undershirt. She placed another soft
kiss on his lips as her fingertips moved to touch his cheek, and Norrington
closed his eyes kissing her back. Their kiss began to become a little more
passionate and the Admiral’s hand stroked Aislinn’s hair gently before
cupping her cheek in his hand pulling her into a deeper more aggressive kiss.
However, before things could escalate into something, James quickly
pulled back looking into her eyes. Her cheeks were warm, but they were warm with
spirits and her eyes showed that she was under the influence of something else
that was stealing her senses. The worst thing in the world would be to share a
night of blissful passion, and have her awake to feel nothing but regret
regardless of marital status.
“Aislinn.” He breathed against her lips. “You need rest.” Cupping
her face in his hand smoothing her hair back out of the way. The look in her
eyes seemed desperately disappointed as she made an attempt to break free and
pull him close to her again but he pulled back once more and kept her from
reaching for him again. “Rest darling.” He whispered again. “Shhhhh.”
“Are you angry with me?” She asked not understanding.
James looked into her eyes for several moments stroking her face. “No .
. . it’s not your fault. You have so much to learn Aislinn.” He said gently.
“I’ll not take advantage of your innocence. I want you to fully understand
what is going on around you before indulging in anything new.”
“I understand.” She whispered, “I promise I do.” Aislinn said
with desperation in her voice as she started to wrap her arms around him once
more. He quickly took her hands and unwrapped them from around his shoulders,
each moment that passed making it more difficult to remain firm on his
principle.
“You’re drunk, Aislinn. You don’t know what you’re doing. If you
hadn’t had so many spirits then it would be different, but as it was you
couldn’t even walk under your own power when you came in. I can’t in good
conscience let this continue.” Aislinn arched her back pressing her body
firmly against James’, each breath pressing her breasts against his chest.
“As much as I would sorely like it too.” He said his own breath labored.
Norrington closed his eyes just feeling the warmth of her body against
his. The young woman leaned closer and in another instant their lips met once
again as they hungrily consumed each other’s mouths once more. All at once
James wrapped his arms around her and lay her back down on the pillow as she
wrapped her arms back around him in turn.
In the back of his mind there was a far off faint voice saying that this
was a bad idea, that he should stop it now before it was to late, but it seemed
like that voice was quickly drown out by the touch of her more then anxious and
willing hands and the caress of her warm lips.
The last bit of rational thought James had disappeared completely when he
found himself laying beneath his young bride as she straddled his hips, and her
soft hands rested on his chest as his own hands guided her hips, teaching her
how to make love to him. She was a fast study and vigorous in her newfound
skill, leaving James unable to hear whatever it was that voice of rationality
was trying to tell him in the beginning.
James rolled over expecting to feel Aislinn’s body against him, but
finding there to be way to much space in the narrow bed. Opening his eyes he
raised his head to find that he was lying quite alone. Feeling a breeze in the
room he sat up a bit more to see the window open and only half of Aislinn.
Getting out of bed he pulled on his trousers and white blouse. He soaked
a cloth in some cold water wringing it out before walking over to the window
sitting down next to Aislinn and pulling her back in wiping her face gently.
“How are you feeling.” He asked knowing she must have been quite sick.
However instead of answering, she turned her eyes down and pushed his
hand away turning her back to him hiding her face. Norrington watched her
reaction not sure exactly why she had it. “I’m not angry with you for
getting drunk, Aislinn.” He said. “I think you learned your lesson on your
own. You’ve done it once, and no doubt the way your feeling now will keep you
from ever wanting to do it again. So I see no reason to go on about it.” She
still didn’t say anything to make a move to turn towards him. “Is that
what’s troubling you?” He questioned leaning closer trying to see her face.
When he did this, she quickly got up and walked away leaving the cabin
and closing the door behind her. James watched a moment before sighing and
throwing the cloth down running his hand through his hair. “No, I was afraid
that wasn’t it.” He muttered under his breath.
That evening, the crew was on deck singing songs and simply having a good
time with each other. The Captain allowed such gatherings to take place every
once in a while for morale’s sake and the officers stood off to the side in
observation letting the men enjoy their revelry.
Aislinn sat closer to the men on some boxes smiling as she watched them
listening to the music and laughing as she saw them dancing about. The men were
fond of her company as well and didn’t mind her being with them when she asked
permission to sit close. Minding James wishes, she didn’t touch any sort of
drink or food she was offered politely turning it away but thanking them for the
gesture.
Norrington appeared a while later on deck knowing that it was where
Aislinn would be. It wasn’t difficult to spot her, she was the only woman on
board, and the men had a tendency to flock about her when she was around them. A
lively song was being played by the few instruments on board, and the beat was
being kept by the men. Aislinn had started clapping with them her eyes bright as
she laughed watching the men twirl about dancing with each other as they all
seemed so happy.
Two of the men came over and offered her their hands, as the men all
seemed to encourage her to join them. In all the excitement, Aislinn seemed to
forget herself anxious to join in the fun and reached out taking their hands as
she was pulled into the group. She’d been watching them for a while so she
knew the steps well enough to follow their lead, and a cheer went up from the
men.
However, her participation in the revelry only lasted a few moments as
the music seemed to come to a screeching halt, and all the movement seemed to
stop as the attention of every person on deck focused in one direction. Aislinn
turned around as the men parted to see Norrington standing at the edge of the
group, with a stern look on his face. Her smile instantly vanished and her
breath caught in her throat. There wasn’t a sound from anyone, you could have
heard the drop of a pin if one had slipped from someone’s hand.
Suddenly, Aislinn took off running from the deck to the stairs
disappearing below. Norrington felt a bit of embarrassment that she had acted in
such an inappropriate way in front of the officers aboard the ship, who where
his peers, not to mention those who were under his command. Calmly, he turned
and disappeared as well going below the decks. After a few moments of awkward
silence the music began again with a different song as the men tried to forget
what had just happened and find the mood that they had been in before.
The Admiral knew she wasn’t about to go back to their cabin. He was the
last person she wanted to see. But it was a problem that needed to be addressed
immediately so he continued through the ship and sought her out. It didn’t
take him too long, there were only a few places that she could go to be alone.
The cargo bay was where he found her, and honestly it was the perfect place for
them to have a private conversation.
She was standing next to a large box with her arms stretched across it
twisting her handkerchief in her hands, obviously having been crying. Norrington
crossed his arms as he looked at her, her back to him. “You said that I could
speak with them. That I could talk with them, as long as I didn’t eat or drink
with them or socialize to much.” She said not moving from where she was.
“You went to far.” He said sternly. “You know you did and so do
they, otherwise my presence on deck wouldn’t have caused such a reaction.”
“It’s because you looked angry. None of the officers said anything .
. . if what I did was wrong why didn’t the other officers . . .” She started
to say only to have James cut her off.
“Because I was there when you leapt from acceptable and ladylike to
improper and vulgar!” He shouted as he walked over to her. Aislinn quickly
moved keeping her back to him. “You think that you wouldn’t have been
escorted from the deck back to my cabin had I not been present? Your behavior is
not only embarrassing the hell out of me but it is disrupting order on this
ship!!” He roared at her. Norrington stepped closer and leaned down next to
her ear, “Women do not belong on ships. Yet there are times when they must be
transported from one place to another and it cannot be helped. This wooden
world, is a world of men . . . and all the presence of women does, is put ideas
into their heads that distract them from their work. That is bad enough in
itself, but you have continuously gone out of your way to escalate that problem
despite my best efforts.”
“I haven’t meant to . . .” She started to say, but James reached up
and grasped her arm tightly.
“It would benefit you to be VERY quiet right now.” He warned. “You
are the Admiral’s wife, Aislinn. Young though you maybe, you have position and
appearance that reflects on me at all times that you had better quickly learn to
manage. Do you understand me?” He said squeezing her arm. She didn’t answer
right away a little frightened by the tone in his voice and she shook her
slightly wanting her to respond, “Do you?” He said again.
“Y . . . yes.” She said quickly.
“Get to the cabin, and don’t leave it again without my permission.”
He commanded pushing her towards the stairs releasing her arm. Aislinn gasped
slightly wrapping her hand around her arm as she looked at him. Taking a step
backwards she ran up the stairs as fast as she could to escape to the cabin not
wanting to spend another moment in his presence.
The Captain looked at the Admiral as he filled his glass. “She’s
young James. I understand that and I assure you that the other officers do to.
That doesn’t reflect on you, you’re not her father you know.”
“That certainly wouldn’t matter, her father had nothing to do with
raising her other then paying someone else to.” James grumbled taking a large
drink of wine. “How do you explain to someone who grew up in a convent the
difference between classes? She herself came from aristocracy and it’s as if
she doesn’t even know what that means. I don’t even know how to begin to
make her understand.”
“You said yourself that there was no one in London that she had yet
associated with after your marriage. Once you’ve taken up your new post she
will be surrounded with others that are of her station and she will learn then.
It’s difficult for her now because the only people she is around are mixed in
class, and she is the only woman onboard.”
James sighed, “You maybe right. Thank God it’s only two more weeks
before we arrive in Port Royal. The next thing she’ll be doing is wearing
beeches and wanting to learn how to wield a sword.” The Admiral paused a
moment, “Yet . . . I’m not sure I want a wife that is going to be a copy or
mold of all those other aristocracy boring types. If she’s not surrounded by
the right people, who knows what I’ll come home to find one day.”
