Disclaimer: I do not own Constantine, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
It's been ages,
since I last wrote for this story, but I had completely lost my
interest in Chastine. But since I hate to leave stories unfinished I
finally got my ass into gear and wrote this. I hope it is a passable
conclusion to the story, although I find it way too sappy. What can a
say, I'm a romantic person at heart. Sorry for making you wait this
long and thanks to EiLeEn, Daysleeper and Teania who
reviewed the last chapter.
Chapter 9 – Romance?!?
John's eyes snapped
open with sudden awareness, the haze of sleep gone from his mind in
an instant. His body was sore in places he hadn't been sore in since
a long time ago and it took him only a moment to remember the reason
for that. Damn Chas and the strange shades of his personality.
Thankfully the room he
was in was devoid of his apprentice, lit only by the dim reddish
light that shone from a doorway that he was sure hadn't been there
before. Not that it surprised him really. He had been in Chas' more
than a little weird mind for long enough to expect doors appearing
out of nowhere.
Sitting up on the hard
wooden bench he had been stretched out on sometime, that almost
seemed an eternity to him at the moment, ago John rubbed his sore
wrists, glad that he was finally free of the chains. Who would have
thought that his sweet little apprentice had such a kinky side to
him? Well, not him, that was for damn sure.
Music was beginning to
filter into the room from the lit hallway and for a moment John
debated whether or not he should follow it.
But there was no other way really and if he intended to find Chas
sometime soon he would have to continue his search, no matter what
strange facets of his apprentice's personality he encountered on the
way.
Thinking back on the
embarrassing way he had admitted his
feelings to the last appearance of Chas a scowl spread over
Constantine's features, shortly followed by a bout of curses. He
could only hope that this was a completely unconscious
section of Chas' mind and that the kid wouldn't know anything about
the things that had happened here. Otherwise the insufferable
nuisance he called apprentice would just
get infinitely worse and that was something John didn't want to have
to suffer through.
His knees almost gave
out under him as he got up from the table, confined in one position
for too long to hold any real strength. Biting back a fresh string of
curses John steadied himself on the edge of the bench he had been
lying on, taking a deep breath until his legs were finally willing to
cooperate with him.
Focusing
on the doorway John walked towards it, hoping that it would be the
way that finally led him to Chas, otherwise he just might go insane
before he ever found the kid. His wrists were itching, a headache was
pounding at his temples and his craving for a smoke had risen to
almost astronomic proportions. Why the hell did he go through this
again?
John sighed as he
stepped into the doorway instantly facing a thin, pinkish gauze
curtain. He had known Chas' mind to be strange, but this? Pushing the
fine material aside he encountered another curtain, which suffered a
far rougher treatment than the first one
had.
And still all he could
see was pink, but at least the music had gotten louder, so he ripped
away the next curtain he encountered and the one after that. John
scowled as he found his way still blocked by an almost see-through
veil, but at least this time he could make out shapes and flickering
candles behind it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The room he stepped
into looked like it had come out of a corny romance novel, everything
around him lit by candles and decorated with sweet smelling flowers.
The scent did nothing for his raging headache and yet he took another
step forward, his attention focusing on the table that stood right in
the middle of the room.
Another Chas was seated
at the table, dressed in a black suit, his hair combed into something
that almost resembled neatness and a glass of wine balanced in his
delicate hand. It didn't take a genius to figure out that this wasn't
the real Chas, but John still walked towards the table.
“I have been waiting for you,
John. Take a seat.” Chas was far more sophisticated than he had
ever been in real life and maybe he was more than a little to blame
for that fact, but for the moment John took the things that were
forced on him in stride and sat down at the table.
A glass of wine
appeared in front of him and he stared at it for a moment before he
finally took it and emptied it in a single large gulp, barely
noticing the taste of the alcohol flowing down his throat. An almost
amused expression had spread over Chas' features, silently regarding
the man opposite him before he finally spoke. “I know what you
want to ask and I can answer your question. But first I want you to
dance with me.”
Oh, hell no. Dancing
was definitely amongst the three things he hated most, right next to
stupid angel half-breeds and the goddamn demon half-breeds. Not even
Chas would get him to dance, not in real life and not in this strange
dream-like mind world.
“I know what you think, John.
But you won't get any farther without my help.” Getting up from
his chair Chas walked over to him and put his hands around his neck,
whispering into his ear as he continued to speak. “And it's
only a single dance. Am I not worth that much to you?”
Shit. Before he really
knew that he would do it John had gotten up from the chair, the
curses that had been resting on his tongue dissolved by the sweet
smile Chas directed at him. Why did he have to have such a soft spot
for the kid?
Sighing he put his hand
on his apprentice's hip, noticing that the music changed to a slow
waltz as soon as he clasped Chas' hand in
his own. As much as he hated dancing he couldn't help but admit that
he loved the feel of Chas so close to his body, melting into every
move he directed. This was closer to the apprentice he knew and liked
in real life than the last Chas had been and it soothed quite a bit
of his ruffled pride. Not that he could have stayed mad at the kid
anyway, not really.
Time seemed to slow to
a crawl as they danced and John wasn't sure whether
this was his imagination or one of the strange tricks Chas' mind
seemed to frequently play on him. Chas' arms
had moved to wrap around his neck and both of his hands were resting
on his apprentice's hips, just barely resisting the urge to slip onto
the kid's ass.
Their bodies were
pressed close with an intimacy that reminded him of the naked
encounters he had had with Chas in this world, moments that would
fuel his fantasies for months and months to come. At least they would
if he ever got out of this.
“Do you really want out?”
Chas' words were a breathy whisper that ghosted over his ear and
right down to his cock, reminding him why he never let his apprentice
close to his body in real life. “Think about what you could
have here and what you will have in reality. Nobody will bother us
here. No demons, no pain, no death, no damnation for all eternity.”
For a moment John
thought he stopped breathing, the offer was so unbelievably tempting.
But it was only an illusion and he knew as much. There were days when
he downright hated his life and the things he had to do, most days in
fact. But when it came down to it he didn't loathe life all that
much, not after he had been given a third chance at it.
He was about to deny
Chas when his apprentice sighed, a small bitter smile flitting over
his face as he stepped out of their embrace. “I expected at
much. You wouldn't really be happy with just being happy, would you?”
John would have liked
to deny his apprentice's accusation, would have liked to snap at him
that he could do without all the bullshit that went on in his life,
but it wasn't really true. As much as he hated demon half-breeds and
exorcisms he enjoyed the rush of adrenaline, power and pride they
gave him. Another one of his addictions and one he didn't know how to
give up. Just like Chas.
Suddenly one of the
walls vanished, opening the way into a simple stone chamber. “Don't
hurt me.” The fading quality of the voice told John that the
Chas he had danced with had vanished, but he couldn't care less at
the moment. It didn't matter, because in the middle of that simply
room, on something that looked like an altar made of stone, Chas
slept.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Usually John would have
been wary of approaching him, but he remembered Midnite's words about
Chas being asleep in his mind, although this wouldn't have been the
setting he would have imagined. His steps echoed in the almost silent
chamber as he walked towards his sleeping apprentice, for some reason
scared that his steps would wake him up.
Stupid, really, since
waking him up was the reason he had come here for. But as he stepped
up to the sleeping figure he found that he had never seen Chas look
as beautiful or as relaxed before. Of course he knew that Chas' life
wasn't that great, but he had never noticed how much worry was
usually etched onto his features and now as it was washed away by
sleep he found the kid look younger than he had ever done before.
It made him feel like a
real prick for wanting Chas, but he couldn't help himself, hadn't
been able to help himself the moment the kid had first stepped into
his apartment, far too young for him to even think about fucking the
gorgeous boy.
Maybe now that he had
learned that Chas wanted him too he could finally make that dream a
reality, knowing that his apprentice wasn't as innocent as he had
always believed him to be. The thought caused a smirk to spread over
his face, accompanied by more than one thought of what he would like
to do to Chas. But first he had to get him to wake up.
Knowing that his
apprentice hated to be awoken before he was ready for it John tried
the nice approach, ruffling Chas' hair and softly speaking his name.
Mmh. No reaction at all. “Chas, wake up.” His voice had
already gotten a lot less nice, patience never his strong suit.
“Chas, wake the hell up.”
Commands didn't work
either so John tried shaking next, but even that didn't get him a
reaction. Neither did yelling and the only thing he accomplished by
hitting Chas' cheeks with his palm was to tinge them a soft shade of
pink.
A sudden idea flitted
through his mind and he started to search his pockets, quickly
finding what he had been looking for. Uncorking the bottle of holy
water he hesitated a second before unceremoniously dumping it over
Chas' face.
“You got to be shitting me.”
There was only one other thing he could think of doing to wake Chas
and that was so cliche, that it probably figured. Bending over the
prone figure of his sleeping apprentice John pressed his lips to
Chas', not even noticing how soft they were as a bright light
instantly enveloped him and caused him to black out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The beeping machines were the first thing John registered before
he opened his eyes, finding himself back on the floor of Chas'
hospital room. Midnite was sitting in a chair close by, stopping the
prayers he had been muttering and curiously gazing at the exorcist.
Scrambling up from his position on the floor John stepped closer
to Chas' bed, expecting the kid to wake up any seconds. Seconds
stretched into a minute, during which Constantine' grip on the bed's
metal railing got impossibly tight. Why the hell did he not wake up?
He'd done what was necessary, he'd been lost in the kid's mind for
what had seemed an eternity to him and all for nothing. That just
couldn't be fucking true. John sighed and was about to turn away when
a small movement at the corner of his eye caught his attention.
Chas' eyelids were fluttering and John couldn't keep himself from
taking a small step closer, unconsciously
grasping his apprentice's hand. Even Midnite had gotten up from his
chair, although he remained where he was, at a polite distance.
And then his eyes snapped open completely, his gaze unfocused
for a moment before Chas seemed to completely come back to himself
and looked at John. His tongue peeked out of his mouth, wetting his
too dry lips before he attempted to speak, his voice raspy from
disuse. “John, hey.”
John couldn't have figured out how to voice the happiness he felt
at that moment even if his life had depended on it, so he did the
only thing he actually was capable of. “I'm never taking you on
an exorcism again, kid. If you hadn't let yourself be thrown around
by that damn angel I would never have had to...”
His rant was cut off by a small squeeze Chas gave his hand, a weak
gesture and yet it managed the usually impossible and shut the
exorcist up. “I know, John.” The smile that tweaked the
corners of Chas' mouth after that said that he understood completely,
understood not only why John was yelling at him, but also the many
things he never said in the past.
And before John had a chance to make even the smallest attempt at
denying his feelings the door was thrown open and the nurses and
doctors rushed in, forcing him out of their way as they crowded
around Chas murmuring about medical sensations and wonders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few months later:
John slammed the receiver back onto the phone, slipping into his
black jacket while he searched for a bottle of holy water and the
other utensils he would need for the exorcism he had just been called
to. Chas was sprawled on the couch, watching each of John's movements
while he sucked on a small piece of chocolate. Swallowing and
capturing the few traces of sweetness that remained on his lips with
his tongue he got up from the couch and stepped right into
Constantine's path. “Can I come, John?”
It was a request to accompany him to the exorcism, John knew as
much, and yet he could help the way his mind interpreted it. It had
been something he had had trouble controlling
before, but now that they were actually in a relationship and he had
had the pleasure of watching Chas come it went straight to his cock,
momentarily purging all thoughts of exorcism from his mind.
But only for the short moment he needed to get himself back under
control and actually find his voice again. “Nope.” The
pout that spread over Chas' face wouldn't have been enough to chance
his opinion, although it came very close. What really did him in was
the hand that suddenly sneaked onto his
crotch and squeezed, while the pout transformed into a naughty grin.
“Please, John. If I help you we'll be much quicker and have
more time afterw...” The rest of Chas' pleading was lost as
John captured his mouth in a fierce kiss, his tongue exploring the
sweet cavern of his lover's mouth and finding the remaining taste of
chocolate there.
The grin was still there after he broke their kiss and not for the
first time since Chas had been released from the hospital John
wondered what he had gotten himself into. His apprentice was by no
means as innocent as he had believed him to be and that proved
a very effective weapon against him.
“Let's go.” This was the third time Chas had managed
to convince him to let him help and it was only Wednesday, goddammit.
Grumbling under his breath John marched out of the flat and down to
the waiting taxi, followed by a still grinning Chas.
THE END
Finally. I'm so happy I'm done with this. After 4 months of not
being able to write for this fandom it seems as if my Constantine
muses have finally reappeared since I wrote this in less than a day.
Unfortunately there is no sex scene, but it somehow didn't fit,
although I really wanted to write one. Now it's time for a last thank
you to all readers and reviewers and good bye for now.
