Chapter 9 – Sekmet's temple
The ride through the
desert had been long and exhausting as the sun mercilessly shone down
upon them. Rick could feel the sweat pouring down his body, sticking
his clothing to his back and making him long for a nice bath in a
cool oasis.
Glancing over at his
lover he wondered how Ardeth managed to take the heat. Not a single
pearl of sweat could be seen on his lover's forehead, although his
clothing didn't allow him the luxury of fresh air on his skin.
Enthralled in staring
at his lover Rick almost missed that Ardeth's hand was raised as a
sign to stop. Puzzled why they would stop in the middle of the
desert, nothing but a small rock foundation in front of them, Rick
dismounted his horse and strode over to his lover, who stared off
into the distance.
“Why did we stop in the middle
of nowhere?”
“We're at the temple.”
Deciding to just wait
and see Rick followed his lover as he led the group of Med-jai over
the sand dunes and towards the small rock foundation. Finally there,
Rick could see a small entrance hidden between the rocks.
Rick barely paid
attention as Ardeth divided his Med-jai into two groups, one that
would explore the temple with them and another that would guard the
entrance. Lighting up a torch Ardeth was the first to go down the
stairs, followed by Rick and the four Med-jai that had been chosen to
go with them.
The walls were barren
and made of simple clay, neither paintings nor sculptures adorning
them. It was actually unusually plain for an Egyptian temple and Rick
wondered whether or not they were in the right location. This looked
more like a simple tomb than the temple of an adored and honored
goddess.
Their progress along
the simple hallway was suddenly halted by a solid stone door, that
blocked the way. While Ardeth started to scan the door for an
unlocking mechanism, Rick searched for the crowbar he had taken with
him.
Grasping his lover's
shoulder he directed the Med-jai's attention to himself, holding the
crowbar out in front of Ardeth. He could see the other man's lips
twitch in amusement as he stepped back to allow Rick access to the
door. A quick application of brute force and the door had swung open,
allowing the group to continue with their search.

Carefully stepping
through the opened door Rick gasped in surprise as torches suddenly
lit themselves, illuminating a huge hall. He had never seen anything
like it before. The floor sparkled and shined as if it was made from
pure gold and so did the walls.
Golden pillars and
statues were lining the way leading up to an over-dimensional statue
of the goddess Sekmet, perched on a huge, golden throne. Onyxes,
emeralds and rubies adorned the statues, glittering in the soft light
of the torches.
But the most
magnificent thing in the whole room was the ceiling. It was not only
high above their heads, but also entirely inlaid with sapphires,
creating the illusion of a glittering desert night. Throughout this
sparkling sea diamonds were strewn, symbolizing the stars. A huge
silver moon shone right over the goddess' head, sending it's light
over her lion face.
Rick wasn't the only
one who was caught in speechless wonder as all of the Med-jai around
him stared at the beautiful display. One of them seemed to be
especially enthralled by the shimmering stones set in one of the
statues, since he made a step towards it. But before he could reach
out to touch them a small Med-jai had already pulled him back in
line.
Strange. He hadn't
expected such behavior from a Med-jai, although it wouldn't have been
an uncommon occurrence had Jonathan been with them. Turning his
attention back towards the other Med-jai it suddenly clicked.
Jonathan and Alex. From
the start on there had been something oddly familiar about the two
Med-jai riding at the very end of their trek, but he hadn't managed
to puzzle out what. Now it was clear. Angered by the fact that his
son had completely ignored what he had been told to do for his own
safety Rick strode towards the two of them, disregarding the curious
look Ardeth send him.
He could practically
see the two of them shrinking away from him as he stopped in front of
them and swiftly pulled the long scarves away from their faces.
Jonathan and Alex, just like he had suspected. His brother-in-law
looked like he wanted to crawl under the nearest stone and wait until
the storm was over, while his son had a definitely defiant spark in
his eyes. Suspecting that it was most likely his son's idea Rick was
about to yell at them when Jonathan started to speak.
“It was his idea.”
Ignoring the accusing
glare Alex sent in his uncle's direction Rick started to talk: “What
the hell were you thinking? I told you to go to Cairo for your own
safety. This is far too dangerous...”
Rick hadn't expected
the fierce anger that could be heard in Alex voice as he interrupted
his speech: “Stop treating me like a baby, dad. I'm not stupid.
Besides I'm not the only one who is in danger. You can't always leave
me behind to keep me safe. I'll stay here and help.”
His son was too much
like his dead wife for his own good. His defiant stance and the
fierce glint in his eyes was exactly the same that Evy had always
displayed when they had argued about something. A look that usually
made him cave, not because he agreed with her but because he knew
that it was a fight he could not win. Rick could easily understand
how Jonathan had been persuaded to follow Alex's plan.
But he was still
worried for his son's safety and he wouldn't give in as easily as his
brother-in-law had done. Rick was about to launch into another speech
of protest, when Ardeth's hand appeared on his shoulder, the warmth
of his firm grip briefly distracting him.
“Now that your son is here,
there is no need to not allow him to help.” Even in the silence
of the temple the quietly spoken words were barely audible, only
meant for Rick's ears.
“But...”
“Your son has seen and
experienced things that few fully-grown men can claim to have
mastered. You have to see that he is more than just a boy. We are not
yet fighting the Lock-tai and can use any help we can get to figure
out the riddle Sekmet has set for us.”
Throwing a fleeting
glance at his softly smiling lover Rick sighed. He trusted Ardeth's
judgment, but that didn't mean that he wasn't still worried. “Ok,
Alex. But I want you to be careful.” Rick tried to ignore the
triumphant grin that spread over his son's face as he turned away and
started examining the temple walls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seemed like they had
already been searching for hours and yet they had found nothing
relating to the riddle they tried to solve. The whole walls were
filled with praises about the victories different pharaohs had
celebrated, but Sekmet's army hadn't been mentioned once.
The glimmer of the gold
they had so admired before now stung in their eyes, making it hard to
read the intricate hieroglyphics. Rick would have very much liked to
just give up and try to fight the Lock-tai with what they had, hoping
that they stood a chance.
This endless and
fruitless search was granting on his nerves, since he had never been
too interested in research before. The role he had usually played in
the exploration of a temple had been to storm in and try to find all
of the hidden traps before they killed him, enjoying the rush of
adrenaline and not bothering if some ancient inscriptions were
damaged.
Jonathan's sudden
scream was almost welcome as it shook him out of his reverie, his
senses instantly alert again.
