Chapter 9

By the end of that day, Anna owned an echoingly empty purse and a three-room house in a relatively quiet spot. She kept staring around at it and wondering when she was going to wake up back at the tavern again. She had used all of her own savings to buy the place she was standing in, so she would have to go back there and sing, but she didn’t have to live there any more. It was an amazing, scary, wonderful thought.

“What’s on your mind, luv?”

“Is this real? I mean, did I really just do this? I’m not going to wake up and find myself back in the tavern again?”

“No, you did it. You’re here. Or at least I’m here, and I think you’re here, so there.”

“That doesn’t make any sense, Jack.”

“It doesn’t have to, does it? “

“I suppose not. If you made sense, I would know I’m dreaming.” Jack looked wounded until Anna crossed the room and kissed him. “Oh, stop looking at me like that. And thank you, by the way.”

“For what?”

“For the last couple of days. For all sorts of stuff. Mostly for teaching me how to let go once in a while. I’m not a pirate, and I won’t ever be one. But there’s a middle ground between pirate and tavern singer, and you showed me where it is. I think I like it, too.”

“Well, that’s good. Tell you the truth, luv, I was wondering if you’d be here when we come in next time. You weren’t meant to be locked into anything; you’ve proved that at least once that I know about. So I broke you out. “ Anna grinned, thinking about the stories Jack had told her about his various escapes, including the one she’d had a hand in. He would know all about breaking people out of anything from jail cells to their previous lives. Speaking of which…

“I should go back and get my other clothes and such. And I guess I should see about getting that bed over here before I want to come back here and fall into it, and it isn’t here.”

“I’ll deal with that, luv. Go back and sing, and I’ll take care of the furniture.”

“It’s a deal, then. Just see if you can get it here in as many pieces as it leaves there in, hmm?”

“I’m a pirate, remember? I’m used to dealing with treasures.”

“Why doesn’t that make me feel any better?” Anna grinned to take the sting out of the comment, and the two of them left to go back to the tavern.

A/N: I know, nothing happens in this chapter. I don't like it either. Unfortunately, this week hav having to spend a lot of time being a grad student, so the muse has taken a back seat to the rest of my work. Hopefully next week things will be less insane!
