Sighing, Gibbs looked over at Jack; the man was still lost in the world of blackness. His head had been bound and he’d been put to bed; now all he needed to do was wake up. Ana stood near Gibbs side. She too had helped take care of the captain, and now that Jack seemed to be settled, the woman pirate shifted from one foot to the other in anxiety wishing desperately for Jack ake ake so that she and Gibbs could find out just what had happened. If Jack was in danger then it would be in his and the Pearl’s best interests to shove off for the next couple of days until the danger passed. However since Jack had yet to wake, Ana and Gibbs where left in the dark.
Will was nowhere to be found; the boy had hidden himself well. Ana had searched for him briefly once she had helped Gibbs get Captain Jack to his cabin yet had found no hide nor hair of him. After two rounds of the ship, Ana had decided that Will could wait, and had gone to help Gibbs bind Jack’s wound. And now twenty minutes later there still had yet to be sign of him.
******************
Will watched from his perch up in the crow’s nest, as Gibbs and Ana carried an unconscious Jack onboard. He had already been to the captain’s cabin, right after he’d rushed on board the Pearl only moments before and hadn’t found Jack. Seeking refuge in a place where he would be able to see if the bad men where approaching, Will had climbed up into the crows nest. Just after he’d climbed over the side, he saw a site that chilled him to the bone: Jack bleeding and bruised in Ana and Gibbs’s arms. Suddenly memories came crashing back into him, the man on the street whom had had hit with the old bottle, no longer wore the face of one of the bad pirates. Instead he wore the face of Jack. A giant lump formed up in Will’s throat and he immediately knew what he’d done. In his need to hurt someone, he had not only killepirapirate in cold blood, but he’d injured the one person that he loved the most.
Ducking down, Will hid from everyone’s view. Tears rose up in his eyes, and he allowed himself to softly cry. He wouldn’t’ blame Jack if, once the man healed, he never wanted to talk to him again; after all he deserved that much. With his luck the captain would keelhaul him or introduce him to the cat; hurting your captain just wasn’t done. Sighing in misery, Will leaned his head back. He’d have to get off the Pearl. Jack wouldn’t ever want to see him again; of that he was sure. Swallowing the lump in his throat, Will came to a quick decision. Sitting up, he started to climb over the side of the crow’s nest just as Ana came back topside. Ducking down, Will peeked over the edge, wang Ang Ana as she roamed about the deck of the Pearl. Will knew that the lady pirate was more than likely looking for him. He watched as Ana searched the deck, and growle ann annoyance as the lady pirate spoke to several of the men, posting three guards onboard the deck.
“Duncan, Cotton, Peter, come over here for a second! Jack’s been injured, and Will’s gone missing. Now Gibbs and I think that the boy might know what happened to Jack, and it is very important that we talk to him. If you see him, don’t let him get of the ship. Call Gibbs or myself immediately. If the Pearl’s in danger we’ll need to know right away,” Ana ordered the men. As boatswain, she was second in command, and in this case, since the captain had been injured, she was left in charge.
“Aye Aye,” the men answered before heading off in three different directions to guard the Pearl and search for Will. Up above them, Will groaned in frustration. Now there would be no way to get off the Pearl, and to make matters even worse, Cotton’s parrot was flying around helping with the search and it was only a matter of time, Will was sure, before the bird flew up to the crow’s nest and happily signaled to his master of Will’s whereabouts.
When the coast looked reasonably clear, Will quickly climbed down the rigging and dashed into the open hatch that led below deck. Being careful to avoid any crewmember he heard or caught a glimpse of, Will followed the hallways down into the bowels of the Pearl; the deepest and darkest part of the ship. Grabbing a blanket from a near by crate, Will wrapped it around his shoulders, and sat down behind a pile of bounty. He would have to wait things through and jump ship later.
***********************
The first thing Jack was aware of was a splitting pain shooting through his brain, far worse than any hangover should ever be. Reaching out blindly, Jack searched for the whelp that was sure to be by his side sleeping peacefully. Finding nothing but open air, Jack cursed. Where was the whelp? And more importantly, why was his head pounding so? Opening his eyes, Jack was extremely surprised to find the afternoon light peeking through the windows in his cabin. Growing concern gripped his heart. Why had he been allowed to sleep threw the day? Normally, the scallywags woke him at first light with their fumbling about, but for some reason right now, there wasn’t a sound to be heard anywhere. Sitting up, Jack tried to figure out what else was nagging at his pain-wracked brain. It took him a moment to realize that the Pearl wasn’t rocking back and forth as it should were she out to sea…she must therefore be in port. Listening to his surroundings somre, re, his suspicions where confirmed by the unmistakable annoying sound of a seagull.
Movement to his right startled Jack out of his thoughts. Turning his head a little bit faster than he probably shouave,ave, Jack found Gibbs sleeping in a nearby chair. Now why was he in here? And once again, where was Will? Bringing his hand up, Jack tried to scratch his head. It was then that the captain noticed the bandage wrapped around his temple. Probing the bound area, Jack hissed in pain when his fingers slid over his wound. It was then that memories of what had happened earlier came plowing back to Jack, hitting him full speed with enough force to make him want to lie back down.
Gibbs woke to the sound of Jack hissing in pain. The older man hadn’t meant to doze off, but Ana was no longer in the room so he didn’t have anyone to talk to, and after watching the captain sleep for about ten minutes, Gibbs had just dozed off from sheer boredom. Standing, the older man made his way over to Jack’s side.
“Easy there Cap’n. That’s quite a nasty bump you have,” Gibbs said softly as he reached his arms out to help steady Jack and help the younger man slide back down on the bed.
Jack eyed Gibbs for a moment before nodding in thanks. “Where be Will, mate?” Jack questioned. The last thing he remembered about Will, was when the lad had the bottle flying at his head, and then he couldn’t remember what had become of the boy.
“Cap’n…he’s somewhere on board the Pearl, of that Ana and I are sure…but he’s hidden himself, and we can’t seem to find him anywhere.”
Jack swallowed after absorbing the news. He couldn’t for the life of him make out why Will had hit him, unless of course the boy hadn’t known it was him. That didn’t sit right with Jack; there had to be something else going on, some other reason why the boy had been so on edge that he didn’t notice that he’d hit Jack. Closing his eyes, Jack thought back to earlier; nothing seemed to out of place. The boy had looked awfully scared, but that was about it. Sighing, Jack closed his eyes before answering. “Mate, go search for him. Something isn’t right. I’ll be fine by myself.”
“Aye Cap’n. Ana and the men are looking for him now. I’ll go in a second, but first there is something that I be needing to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“Who hit you, Cap’n? And do we need to shove off for a couple of days to let things settle down?”
“No and Will.”
“Beg your pardon captain, what was Will?”
“The whelp. He hit me.”
“Why?”
“I don’t bloody know, Mate, but something doesn’t feel right. The whelp was scared; he didn’t know it was me. Go find him. Savvy?”
“Aye Cap’n,” Gibbs nodded before heading out the door.

Will sat hugging his legs in the darkness of the bowels of the ship, his heart aching with the need to know of his captain/lover’s condition, but fear clouded his mind. He was sure that the captain would be or already was steaming mad at him for his stupidity. Wiping a small trail of tears away, Will bit his lip trying to get his mind and body under control. It would do him no good to have a breakdown. Wrapping his jacket and the blanket more tightly around himself, Will briefly began to wonder how long he would have to stay hidden down here, as it was extremely cold. Hugging his legs to his chest, Will suppressed the cold that he was feeling, and allowed his mind to drift once again; this time away from his present situation, and back to distant memories.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Will? What are you doing?” The sweet song filled voice of Elizabeth filled his ears. Tearing his eyes away from the blue expanse of crystal clear water before him, Will wiped a trail of fresh tears away from his eyes before turning and regarding his one and only friend. It had been almost a year since he had been pulled from the ocean, after pirates had attacked his ship during the crossing from England. He was grateful to both Elizabeth and her father settsetting up his apprenticeship with Mr. Henry Brown*, for they had given him a chance that he wouldn’t have been privileged to have otherwise, but at the same time he was miserable. He terribly missed his mother who had died right before he left England, and the need to find his father overwhelmed him.
“Just watching the water, Miss Swann.” Will answered her question. He was, at the moment, in no mood to talk, and secretly hoped that the young eccentric girl would just go away leaving him in his peace.
“Will how many times must I ask you to call me Elizabeth?” Elizabeth shot back. It seemed that the boy refused to call her Elizabeth no matter how many times she asked him to.
“I can’t Miss Swann. It just wouldn’t be right. You’re a young lady and I am but an apprentice to a common man. I hold no right to call you by your first name.”
“Will don’t be silly! We are friends are we not?”
“Miss Swann…”
“Elizabeth. I won’t ask you again. please Will?”
“Elizabeth.”
“Much better. Now, are you going to tell me what you’re doing out here Will?”
“Nothing…I told you, I’m just watching the water.”
Elizabeth wasn’t fooled for a second, and as if she could see into his very soul she answered, “oh Will, father is still searching for word of your father. Don’t give up hope yet. I’m sure we’ll be able to find something.”
Nodding, Will didn’t answer. Instead, he just rested his head upon his knees. Elizabeth knew that young Will was miserable in Port Royal, as he was constantly teased by the other children in his level of class, and he didn’t have any friends other than herself. Why, just that very morning, the other children had been teasing Will. Sighing, Elizabeth took a long look at the boy. He was smaller than average for a twelve year old, a year younger than she was herself at thirteen*. He carried a slim frame, which was fuel to the older children’s teasing, since most of them had already started to fill out and grow into their more adult, male-looking bodies, while Will continued to look like a small child. She felt for the boy. In the year since they had come here, she herself had managed to make several friends. Most liked her for who she was, and not just the fact that she was the governor’s daughter and had a lot of money to buy pretty things. She only wished it was the same for Will. She had no doubt that if he’d had money, he would have been popular, but as it was he didn’t, so he wasn’t.
“Oh Will, it will all turn out in the end, I promise. But in the mean time…I just want you to know that I will always care for you. We will be friends forever, of this I promise you. We should shake on it Will, that we’ll be friends forever and that we’ll never hurt or betray the other. Deal?”
Will turned, regarding Elizabeth. He’d left all his friends behind in England, doubting that he’d ever see them again, and since then he’d been without a real true friend. Nodding his head, he reached out and grasped Elizabeth’s hand, and together the pair shook on it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Will mumbled a curse. He was now sitting in the dank, dark bowels of the Black Pearl because Elizabeth had betrayed him. If only she had actually stayed true to her word all those years ago, Will wouldn’t have felt so lost and hurt earlier in the day, and he wouldn’t have ever left the Pearl only to set foot in that Tavern, thus starting the day’s events. Instead, he might be wrapped in his lover’s arms, in a tavern or in Jack’s cabin. But no. Elizabeth had had to turn on him. After he’d spilled his whole heart to her, she had gone into James Norrington’s arms. Didn’t she realize how much she’d hurt him?
Lost in thought, Will failed to notice Anamaria make her way down the ladder into the bowls of the ship until the female pirate was within inches of him. Jumping about thirty feet, from surprise, Will tried to bolt. However Ana, who was surprisingly strong caught his shoulder. “Just where do you think you’re going lad? Captain Jack wishes to see you.”
Dread filled Will’s stomach. Sighing, he knew he was beaten, and allowed the lady pirate to guide him out of the bowels and back up topside to the door of Jack’s cabin. Knocking once, she pushed the door open and pulled Will inside.
Jack, seeing Will behind Ana, sat up on the bed immediately. He could sense fear radiating off of Will. Nodding his head, he signaled for Ana to leave them alone before he opened his arms in invitation to Will.
“Luv? Come give your Captain a hug.” Jack wasn’t sure what Will would do. The boy looked as if he was going to be sick. And when he didn’t move or look up, Jack opened his arms wider. “Will? It’s okay boy, I’m not mad. C’mere.”
Will walked obediently over ack,ack, not wanting to anger the man more. Jack said that he wasn’t mad, but Will didn’t see how that could be possible. Sitting down of the edge of Jack’s bunk, Will looked down at the floor instead of looking at Jack. Sighing, Jack inched closer to the boy and grabbed Will into a hug, pulling the younger man down into his arms. Once he was absolutely sure he had a good grip on the boy, Jack lay back down, bringing young Will Turner with him. Will fought against Jack bly, ly, but in the end just allowed the older man to have his way.
“Luv? Can you tell ol’ Jack what happened?”
“I’m sorry Captain…I didn’t know it was you.”
“JACK! Whelp!”
“Jack?”
“Aye lad, me names Jack.”
“I’m sorry Jack.”
“Shhhh, it’s okay luv. What happened? Why where you so upset that you didn’t notice it was me when you were standing not two feet from me?”
“I…. I….”
“You???”
“Did something stupid.”
“Well, there’s a shocker. Now tell ol’ Jack what it was that you did.”
“I killed a man.”
“You WHAT?!?!?” Jack cried out loudly, that was the last thing he had expected to leave young Turner’s mouth, yet the boy had said it loud and clear.
“I went to a tavern in the really bad part of Tortuga…and well, things got out of hand, and I killed one of the pirates.”
“Oh, angel,” Jack replied wrapping his arms tighter around Will, and kissing him on the forehead. Seeing that Jack wasn’t mad as he had feared, Will nestled his head down into Jack’s chest.
“Will, luv? I think that it is about time you give me some answers as to just what has been going through your head…and don’t you dare tell me ‘nothing,’ savvy?”
Will nodded into Jack’s chest. After all he’d done to the man, he owed Jack the truth at least that much.
“Elizabeth is getting married…”
“WHAT?”
“When we were walking back to the Pearl last night I overheard it from some sailor. She’s marrying the commodore…”
Jack stayed quiet, not really sure why this bit of information was upsetting the lad so much, as he’d known it since Isla de Muerta and the whole Barbossa thing. Why was it causing so much trouble in Will’s mind now?
“I loved her Jack. She promised me that she would never hurt me…but she lied. hur hurt me…”
Jack listened for the next several moments as Will told him all about how he’d told Elizabeth that he loved her, just before he’d gone and saved Jack from the gallows. He listened as Will poured his heart out about how he really wasn’t sure if he really wanted to live a pirate’s life, and if it wasn’t for a certain someone he was suret het he would not be. He listened as Will told tales of his life growing up and how alone he’d felt, and how alone he still felt. How he wished that everything would be okay, but how he didn’t know if such a thing was in fact possible.
When Will finished speaking, Jack no longer was sure if Will loved him or not. Dread grew in the pit of his stomach as he thought about losing the boy that he’d grown to love more than life itself.
“Luv?”
“What Jack?”
“You’re not alone you know that, right? I love you!”
“I know, Jack. I love you too. But Elizabeth…”
“Is out of your reach lad. You should try to be happy for her…even though she’s marrying a lobster…”
“I know Jack, and I am. I’m glad that she’s happy…but at the same time, the betrayal is killing me. She was my only friend…and we promised that we would never hurt each other. But…she did…”
Hugging Will close to his body, Jack tenderly kissed Will once again upon the head. “Luv…she didn’t betray you…”
“What are you getting at Jack?”
“Now don’t get mad, luv. Elizabeth, as you said, is a woman of class, and unfortunately, she isn’t free to do as she wishes, and as much as she might say otherwise, you have and will always have that freedom. Elizabeth is jealous of you for that reason, but also knows that despite the fact that you loved her and she you, that you would never be able to live the life that her life would demand upon you. Savvy?”
It all sunk in to Will then. Elizabeth had turned on him to spare him from the life that loving her would have led to. He would have lost his freedom and he knew now that Elizabeth never would have wished that upon him. So she had done what she had thought was right, and had turned on him so he would be able to live the life that was set out before his feet: The life of a pirate…she had known all along. “You’re right Jack. I hadn’t thought about it that way. I only wish now that I had.” Sitting up, Will pulled out of Jack’s embrace, looking down at the captain who remained lying down. Will tentatively reached a hand out to touch the bandage wrapped around Jack’s temple. “I’m so sorry Jack.”
Capturing Will’s roving hands, Jack kissed them. “I told you luv, it’s okay. Nothing that Captain Jack Sparrow can’t live through…though I might need some tender loving care for a little while, savvy?”
“It would be the least I could do, Captain,” Will answered before leaning down and tenderly kissing Jack’s lips. Standing, Will moved to the door, I’ll go let Ana and Gibbs know what happened….”
“Luv? Tell the wench to recruit some men. We’ll sign the articles tomorrow morning before we set off. Savvy?”
“Aye, Jack. I’ll be back later then. Is there anything that you need?”
“Aye lad, smuggle ol’ Jack in some rum.”
“Jack!"
“Captain luv. Bring your captain some rum. ”
Shaking his head, Will turned and left the room.

*1- Mr. Henry Brown- I didn’t know what Mr. Brown’s name was so I gave him one.
*2- Okay, yeah so I know most authors out there think Will is older than Elizabeth well guess what in my story he’s not. (and if it’s written out there somewhere that he is in fact older I haven’t been able to find it so I decided to make him younger.)
