Back on board her own ship, Kehlan handed the net of fruit to a crewman to be taken down to the galley, then returned to her quarters. Stripping off her clothes, she allowed them to fall to the floor in an untidy heap and stepped into the bathroom for a quick shower. The sonics pulsed against her skin, soothing her bruised and aching body and removing the sweat and grime from the day’s activities as well as the faint scent of methane that clung to her. She much preferred the relaxing luxury of a water shower, but her long, wavy hair would take too long to dry and there wasn’t enough time for that. She had played hooky long enough, there was work to be done.
Emerging from the shower she donned a clean uniform, cursing as she tied her unruly mane into a rough ponytail – sonics always left her hair full of static and out of control. Retrieving her spare d’k’tahg from its place on the wall, she sheathed it in her belt. It was a good blade, better quality than the one she had given George, but without that knife’s honourable history or sentimental value. Still, she didn’t regret the gift. With a quick glance in the mirror to check that she looked respectable and that all was in place, she headed for her ready room. She’d been absent for only a few hours and already the messages were piling up, a blinking red light on her console warning of incoming subspace messages from Starfleet.Khetara, she discovered, had not wasted any time and a formal complaint from the Klingon High Council had already arrived on Admiral Portway’s desk. Kehlan had no doubt that one would follow very shortly from the Romulans once they discovered that Jason Wood had been remanded into custody. She sighed as she read the admiral’s message. The situation was escalating and it worried her. After pacing restlessly up and down for a while, Kehlan finally decided to go and see the prisoner. She had not yet done so and maybe it would help clarify her thoughts and come to a final decision on what to do for the best. She already knew she had no choice, she HAD to obey orders and hand Price over to the Federation. To do otherwise would lead to her court martial and possibly even the loss of her command. But to hand him over would at best cause a major diplomatic incident and at worst a war.*****Infuriated by the smug expression on his face, Kehlan stared coldly at the prisoner. “You betrayed my trust" she informed him, "and I do not deal lightly with traitors and murderers. Give me one good reason why I should not just kill you right now and save us all a problem?”There was just the faintest hint of fear in Price's eyes as he stared back at her. The captain’s anger was to be expected but he had not foreseen the possibility of her disobeying her orders in order to gain vengeance. She was Starfleet; surely she had to do what they told her to do. "I had my orders and I followed them," he blustered, “Speak to Admiral Moore, he'll tell you.”“Admiral Moore is currently under arrest facing charges of high treason,” she informed him, satisfied to see him blanch at her words. “As for you, the Yautja ambassador has requested that you be handed over to their arbitrators," Kehlan continued. "The Klingons are also demanding your extradition. I believe the Romulans also have a warrant out for your arrest.”`
“I am a Federation citizen,” Price insisted, stepping towards her in his agitation. “You can't do that! I have rights. I demand…”
Stepping forward, she grabbed hold of his arm, twisting it behind his back and slammed him face first into the bulkhead. She was smaller than him but her anger gave her strength. "I decide what rights you have," Kehlan interrupted him harshly, "You demand nothing here." Satisfied that he understood, she released her grip on him and stepped back. "I am inclined to let you choose" she told him. "Which of them should I hand you over to?""I want a Federation trial" he insisted sullenly, futilely trying to hide his increasing nervousness. You sabotaged my ship and killed my crew!” Kehlan snapped, “Tell me why I should hand you over for a court martial and a couple of years in a cushy penal colony in New Zealand before Section 31 get you released and back into active service to kill again? At least half of your crimes carry the death penalty so choose wisely. I can give you to the Yautja arbitrators… or the Romulans… or the Klingons. They will deal with you harshly, a public execution probably.”“You can’t do that” the man who called himself Jonathan Price insisted. "Let me go or you'll regret it!" Kehlan let out a very Yautja-like growl and had the momentary satisfaction of seeing him flinch back. “You are hardly in a position to make threats” she warned him.“I have done nothing wrong,” Price said, “But if I really were the assassin you accuse me of being, what makes you think I would not have been prepared for this… put safeguards in place? What makes you think your family or your precious ship is safe?”Wary now, she demanded, “And what is that supposed to mean?”The smug smile returned. “If I were guilty,” Price replied, “I would have put plans in place to protect myself if I got caught… time delayed explosive devices in key places for example, like the warp core.. or maybe even the Starbase computer core. Kill me and you’d be killing a lot more besides, including your friends and family!”She gave a derisive snort, not daring to let him see how much his threat had actually scared her – terrified her in fact. She had over a thousand souls on board her ship, officers, crew and marines, not to mention a handful of civilians. A bomb in the warp core would kill all of them instantly. And if he had targeted the starbase, well there were thousands more on board the station. She had no personal fear of dying; death in battle was one thing but this would be nothing more than cold blooded murder – a massacre in fact. No, she told herself, it was just a threat, nothing more. Not even remotely reassured or convinced by the thought, it was a risk she could not take. she would have to act quickly, there was no time to lose. “Jason Wood… Jonathan Price… whatever your real name is,” she warned him coldly, her hand clenching spasmodically on the hilt of her d’k’tahg as she fought to control her anger. “I swear to you now that if I find even the slightest trace of explosives anywhere on this ship, I will kill you myself.”Kehlan stepped out of his cell and headed for the exit to the outer corridors, stopping momentarily to address the security officer manning the desk. “You can raise the force-field now, Reynolds, I am done with him.”“Aye Captain.”Kehlan barely heard the guard’s response. She was already half way up the corridor, moving at a fast pace that was almost but not quite a run. She touched her combadge, activating it. “Kehlan to Qeytok. I want a full security sweep of engineering.“Captain?” Qeytok’s voice over the com channel sounded a little bemused by the unexpected order, “Is something wrong?”“The prisoner has made threats,” Kehlan informed him, “He claims there may be explosives on board the ship, specifically he said close to the warp core.”“Understood,” Qeytok responded grimly, “If there’s anything there, we will find it and deal with it.”Not bothering to take the time to acknowledge, Kehlan was already closing the channel and opening another one to the bridge. She had reached the turbolift now and pressed the button to summon it, waiting impatiently for it to arrive. “Coms, I want an urgent Priority One message sending to Starbase 24.” Quickly and succinctly she explained the threat“Ch’Tang to Endeavour, do you require assistance?” The voice was Khetara’s and her concern was evident. The permanently open com channel between the two ships had allowed the Klingon ship’s bridge crew to hear everything, just as though they were on Endeavour’s bridge. “Is everything all right over there, Kehlan?”“We are fine, General,” Kehlan responded, moving across the bridge and taking the centre seat that her first officer had just vacated. “We’ll need to power down our warp core temporarily to do a full security sweep. Our departure is going to be delayed for a couple of hours. There’s no need for you to wait for us.”“Very well,” Khetara said briskly, “We are ordered back to the homeworld, departing immediately. If you need anything we will be in communications range for some time. Qapla’ Endeavour!”“Understood,” Kehlan said, “Qapla’ Ch’Tang”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
