An oppressive silence fell as the watching Hunters, horrified and not quite believing what they had heard, backed away from Kal’rin-de, unconsciously disassociating themselves from him. To insult the clan leader in such a way was unthinkable, especially after he had just brought them successfully through one of the greatest hunts in Clan history, a hunt that had brought great honour to all who had participated in it. Silently they waited for the explosion, wondering not unreasonably if this was to end with Kal’rin-de’s skull adorning the Elder’s trophy wall.
George himself was too shocked by the completely unexpected outburst to react immediately. Then its significance hit him with all the force of a sledgehammer. He was already very close to the Young Blood but stepped forward, crowding him even further. Anger and aggression taking over, he flared his mandibles wide and raised a hand to strike.“Honoured one!” The silence was broken by Da’rian. Passing the kehrite on his way to Yeyinde’s command centre, he had heard the commotion and had stopped to investigate, just in time to witness Kal’rin-de shoving at Kehlan’s shoulder. “Honoured One,” he repeated, more loudly this time, raising his voice to get the Elder’s attention as he pushed his way through to the front of the crowd. The spectating Young Bloods got out of his way quickly and he took no notice of them. His priority right now was to distract the Elder long enough for him to calm down enough that he would not rip Kal’rin-de apart with his bare hands for the blatant disrespect he had shown. The commander of the honour guard was all too aware that the clan leader was aging. That one day a time would come when the Elder’s strength would begin to fail, but unlike Kal’rin-de he had seen the Elder fight many times, had trained with him, sparred with him on a regular basis and he knew that while it was inevitable, it was not going to happen just yet. Not that losing one match was a major problem, no warrior was completely invincible but for one in the Elder’s exalted position, it would lead to an increase in challenges. Eventually he would be forced to step down as clan leader. And when that time came, their Elder would not choose a quiet retirement. It was not in his nature. Instead he would go on Final Hunt and his knowledge and wisdom would be lost to the clan forever. The older Hunters all knew just what a disaster that would be. Jau’esh’enye was a good leader and that was not something to be thrown away lightly. The clan had grown and prospered under his leadership. The youngsters like Kal’rin-de however did not understand. They saw only the glory and thrill of the hunt. Most of them would not live to become old. Instead they would die in the hunt, killed by their own arrogance and overblown sense of superiority. Those who did survive would learn wisdom and restraint, eventually becoming the next generation of leaders and teachers until they in turn were displaced by younger Hunters. Such was the Yautja way.Slowly, George turned his head to stare at Da’rian questioningly, his glittering yellow eyes and tense body language silently broadcasting his barely held back anger.“It is not your fight, Honoured One.” Despite his insistence, Da’rian was careful to keep his body language respectful and non confrontational. He had long since learned how to deal with his Elder in this sort of mood. “It is for Kay-lan to fight him. He challenged her first”There were growls and clicks of agreement from the watching Young Bloods. They had all seen Kal’rin-de shove at the female’s shoulder. The message was clear and unequivocal. Challenge had been issued.Slowly and reluctantly George stepped back from the young blood, turning to face his Klingon friend. Da’rian spoke the truth. But then, he always did, inconvenient as it often was. “Kay-lan? Will you accept this challenge?”“Sei-i,” Kehlan answered without hesitation. She knew enough of Yautja culture to understand what she was getting into, had known the moment Kal’rin-de had shoved her that she was going to have to fight him. “I accept the challenge.” She gave Kal’rin-de a cold stare before moving to take her place in the circle. The Elder inclined his head in acknowledgement. He was angry enough to want to deal with Kal’rin-de himself but he recognised that allowing Kehlan to fight him would teach the greater lesson. He had faith in her ability. She was a blooded warrior, she had killed a Nrak’ytara in hand to hand combat. He had no doubt that she could handle herself against a Young Blood. Even so, and he growled at the thought, if that young cjit-for-brains harmed her, he would flay him alive! As Kal’rin-de reached for one of the training staffs hanging on the wall, the Elder approached Kehlan and placed his hand on her shoulder, drawing her attention momentarily back to him. “Do not forget, Kay-lan,” he warned her, carefully keeping his voice low. His words were for her only. “Kal’rin-de might be young and impetuous but he is also is a trained, blooded warrior. If his skills were not worthy of that rank he would not be on this ship.” Do not underestimate him as I did you.”Kehlan nodded, accepting the warning and taking it to heart. “Understood.” As he stepped away from her, giving her space to fight, she grimly turned her attention to her opponent, studying him carefully. A little bulkier than George, he was also a fraction taller, although that might have been because he was bristling like a Terran Porcupine. It was very clear to her that this was going to be nothing like her match with George. She had gone into that knowing that the Elder would not deliberately harm her. It had in all honesty been little more than two friends messing about, sparring purely for fun. Kal’rin-de however was nursing a grudge. Having opened his mouth - and in Kehlan’s opinion, putting his oversized foot right in it in front of his friends - the young Hunter had backed himself in to a corner and now felt pressured to prove himself. They both circled, looking for an opening. What would her old sensei have to say about the situation in which she currently found herself, Kehlan wondered whimsically? No doubt he would quote Sun Tzu at her. She could almost hear his voice in her mind. “If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him.” It wasn’t bad advice although she would have to be careful. She needed him angry enough to be careless yet not so angry he went berserk. “You think I am inferior?” she asked him. “Tell me… when you lie defeated at my feet… what will your excuse be then?”The young Predator growled at her, obviously trying to scare her and put her off. Very well, she decided, she would give him what he wanted. Careful to keep her awareness on her opponent, she allowed her eyes to flicker towards George.Kal’rin-de was already wondering what in the name of Paya he had done! Now that it was too late, he realised how unbelievably stupid it was of him to publically insult the Elder like that. What had got into him, he wondered unhappily? He knew he had been very lucky, only a few months after passing his Chiva, to have been chosen to participate in this mission alongside some of the best warriors of his clan and the Leader that he had always admired and looked up to, a Leader that was arguably one of the greatest Yautja alive. And now he had blown it! He was not completely sure why he was not already dead at the Elder’s hands. And now he had to fight the Ooman Lou’tde Kalei. He could not understand why the Elder valued her so much. She was too small and pathetic for there to be any honour in defeating her, and in his mind there could be no other outcome - he was a Yautja after all and she was nothing more than prey.Keeping his attention on the female, Kal’rin-de looked for an opening. He let out a vicious snarl, hoping it would intimidate her into making a mistake and sure enough, she looked away, glancing towards the Elder for reassurance. Seeing his opportunity, he struck. It seemed like only a few minutes later that a dazed Kal’rind-de found himself sitting on the floor wondering what in the name of Paya had happened to him. She’d him hard and fast, ducking under his staff and with a quick twist of her body, harnessing his momentum and using it against him. He staggered past her and she turned, her staff smashing into the back of his knees sending him crashing to the ground. Nothing more than a lucky fluke, Kal’rin-de told himself, getting to his feet and shaking himself, ready to attack again. She offered him a mocking smile. “Datay kaitay!”she invited. Her ability to pronounce the Yautja language sketchy at best, she mangled the command to fight but the meaning was obvious. “What are you waiting for? Come and get me.”Infuriated, he swung at her, his staff clashing with hers, the sheer force of the collision sending her staggering back a pace. As he drew back slightly to strike again, she was already moving forward to attack. Pain blossomed in his jaw and there was a loud cracking sound as her staff came into contact with his lower mandible, breaking the tusk and leaving it hanging uselessly. He stared at her incredulously before letting out a strangled roar and swinging wildly at her. From that point on it had all gone horribly wrong. The Ooman female might be small but she was fast and agile, slipping under his guard, striking and dancing away before he could respond. Before he knew it, he was down again and she had him pinned, her staff at his throat. Somehow he had lost the fight he had thought he could not lose.XXX
