(A/N: Alright, this is going to be interesting. In order to stop the Xenomorph, our team is going to have to ask for help from Alice, the person they've basically been torturing all this time. Can't imagine how she's going to react to that. Talk about an ironic situation. But then, you have to consider what will happen to Alice if she doesn't agree. And what will she do once she's out? There's a lot at stake, so let's see what happens.)

Chapter 8: Negotiating
It was no surprise to anyone that Scotts was the closest to Alice, so it was decided that he would be the one to speak to her about going after the Xenomorph, although the others were present as well. Scotts didn’t know how to broach the subject with her. How exactly do you ask someone you’ve held prisoner, treated as a science project, and performed horrible experiments on to risk their life to stop a monster that was trying to kill you?
Truthfully though, Alice wouldn’t have much of a choice. If the Xenomorph killed them off, there would be no one to feed her, and she would soon starve. So her life was on the line as well. But still, how do you make such a request?
Taking a deep breath, Scotts decided to just wing it, and switched on the speaker. “Alice, can you hear me?”
“Thomas,” she said in acknowledgement, “what’s happening? Why do you keep fighting amongst yourselves?”
Scotts sighed. Of course she’d have questions. She’d witnessed Rogers point the flame-thrower at them, and then Fritz with the gun. But there was no time to explain all that.
“A lot had been going on,” he simplified. He hesitated for a moment before asking, “How much do you know about what’s going on out here?”
Alice frowned. “Not much. Something is very wrong though; I’ve been watching.” A look of worry crossed her face. “Thomas, are you alright?”
He appreciated her concern, especially when he should have been the one asking that after her experience with the Chestburster, but Fritz had forbidden him from speaking with her until the Xenomorph had been dealt with. Another more logical part of his brain that would never shut up told him that her worry was an act, but he pushed the thought aside.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t speak to you before now, but I’m afraid we’re all in serious danger. That creature that hatched out of your chest is on the loose. It’s already killed two of us, and it’s coming for the rest of us soon.”
Alice’s hand came up and covered her chest, right over where the Chestburster had hatched from. She didn’t have so much as a mark, but she was undoubtedly scarred mentally from such a painful and horrific experience. It made Scotts feel like such an ass for not checking on her sooner, even with the Xenomorph on the loose and Fritz refusing to allow him to speak to her. But he couldn’t worry about that right now.
“We can’t kill it,” Scotts continued. “We tried, but it has your regeneration. All our methods of communication are cut off, so we can’t even call for help, and the ship is disabled, so we can’t leave either, and the power is starting to fail because that thing is getting into areas it shouldn’t be in. We might be able to hold if off for a little while, but it’ll get to use eventually. We can’t stop it, we can’t catch it, and we can’t kill it.” He took a deep breath and gave her a pleading look. “But you might be able to.”
He watched as she took in this information. She blinked once, then twice, then gave him a look he couldn’t decipher. “You want me to kill my baby?”
Scotts’ stomach clenched. Dear God, did Alice see the Xenomorph as her child? Technically, in some twisted way, it could be viewed as such. The undoubtable sexual in nature act of the Facehugger, the impregnation, the inheriting of traits from its host, the incubation and growth, and finally, the “birth”. Yes, in some warped, perverse way, a Xenomorph could be considered the “child” of its host, but they couldn’t have Alice thinking that way.
“Alice, listen-” he began, but before he could answer, Rogers stepped forward and spoke up.
“That thing isn’t your child! It’s a parasite! Like a tapeworm, or something. It used you like a meat sack to take what it needed from you, then tore its way out and left you to die, only you didn’t. It’s not your baby.”
Alice stared at him for a few minutes, seemingly considering his words, before holding up her chin. “Perhaps. But it’s also the closest thing you’ll ever let me have to having a child, isn’t it? You’ll never let me be a mother.”
It was like a punch in the gut to Scotts. The way she said it made it sound so maternal, as if they were denying her a basic right that all woman should have. And in a way, they were, despite it meaning the beginning of the end of humanity. They all knew the consequences and risk that allowing her to reproduce would have. If she had a child, especially if it was male, it would put the human race at risk of extinction if they ever made it to Earth somehow. Should Alice or any of her children ever get away, they would breed and multiply, exterminating and replacing humanity with their kind, just as their nature and instincts intended for them to do.
A frustrated noise escaped Fritz, and she stepped up to the controls. “We’re not debating this with her.”
Her hand came down on a button, and Alice was blasted with cold air. She screamed and thrashed around as the freezing mist obscured her.
“What the hell are you doing?” Scotts shouted.
With Fritz being his superior, he had always backed down from her judgment when it came to dealing with Alice. But that was when they had a job to do. Things had changed, circumstances had changed, and, quite frankly, he didn’t care about his job that much right now.
Part of the reason he had never risked getting fired before was because without his job, he wouldn’t be able to do anything to help Alice. Better to have him around to help her through the hard times than to leave her alone to suffer through them without him. That seemed to be a moot now though since he didn’t think any of them would even have a job anymore anyway, even if they somehow managed to make it out of here alive, so he had no issue with shoving Fritz away from the controls, even if she was a woman.
Fritz’s hand came off the button and she stumbled away, almost falling over. The cold air stopped blowing, leaving Alice curled in a ball on the floor, shivering and covered in frostbite. Fritz glared at Scotts in disapproval, but he just glared right back at her.
“Why are you punishing her?” he demanded furiously.
“She needs to learn obedience,” Fritz responded.
“She’s not a slave, and she wasn’t being disobedient; she asked a question.”
Fritz’s nostrils flared. “You’re too soft on her, and you’re once again forgetting what she is.”
“I’m not.”
“You are. And she doesn’t need to ask questions, she just needs to do as she’s told, and that’s it.” She turned back to Alice. “I am firmly against this, but it seems I’ve been outvoted. We need you to hunt down and kill the specimen. After that, you will return to your confinement without a fuss. Do not make us come after you.”
As her frostbite healed, Alice stood up straight and fixed Fritz with a hard look. “Why should I help you?”
Anger flashed in Fritz’s eyes and she inhaled deeply. Before she could respond though, Rogers spoke up. “If we die, you die. You’ve got water, but you depend on us for food. If that thing kills us, then there will be no one around to feed you.”
Alice seemed to consider this, and a smug smile slowly crossed her face. “And who says I actually need you to feed me? Perhaps I’ll cannibalize my own limbs. They grow back after all.” At the shocked and disgusted looks she received, she simply cocked her head to the side and smiled. “Oh, does that surprise you? It shouldn’t. People do crazy things to survive. And after all, according to you, I’m just an inhuman monster.”
Scotts sighed. This was very likely a bluff, even if it was possible for her to somehow survive by cannibalizing herself. He doubted Alice meant what she was saying and was only trying to make a point.
Fritz, however, didn’t take her sass well. “You can still feel pain though, and removing your limbs will be far from pleasant, as will devouring your own raw flesh. And would constantly eating your own flesh even provide you with the nutrition you need to survive if your body uses that same nutrition to regenerate? But that aside, I will be more than happy to freeze you until you do as you’re told.”
Despite her threat, Fritz did not move to hit the button, possibly because Scotts was standing in her way. Alice’s eyes still went to the button though before going back to Fritz and hardening. “You can freeze me all you want right now, but you can’t do it when you’re dead. And eating what I must to survive won’t be pleasant, but at least I will survive. You can’t claim the same.”
“Little bitch…” Fritz muttered under her breath.
If the situation weren’t so dire, Scotts would have smiled at the way Alice had outmaneuvered her. He was sure she was bluffing though; she just wanted to give Fritz some payback however she could.
“But…” Alice said, pausing for dramatic effect, “I will help you. On one condition.”
“No,” Fritz immediately replied. “No conditions.”
Rogers let out an exasperated sigh. “Jesus, Fritz, she hasn’t even said what she wants yet. At least hear her out.”
Fritz threw him a dirty look. “It’s obvious what she wants.” She glared at Alice. “She wants to mate so she can have a child. She’s just been waiting for an opportunity like this. But that is non-negotiable. Even if we allow it, we would be obligated to exterminate it afterwards.”
Alice’s lips briefly curled back, making it look as if she had hissed, though no sound escaped her, and her eyes regarded Fritz with hatred. “That’s not my condition.” I know you won’t allow it.”
“No sex either,” Fritz added quickly. “Not even with protection. We can’t take the risk. And no time outside of your room. Perhaps we could get you some new books, or some other sources of entertainment, but that’s it.”
“Dr. Fritz,” Ramirez said loudly, “we can’t be too picky. We need her help. If her request is reasonable-”
“It is,” Alice interrupted. She paused for a moment, looking Fritz dead in the eye. “I want her to call me by my name.”
A look of stupor crossed Fritz’s face at the unexpected request, and her mouth dropped open in surprise. “What?”
“I’m tired of you referring to me as ‘it’ and ‘Subject 4G2A’. I’m tired of you speaking about me and treating me and acting like I’m a thing. From now on, I want you to use my name. Starting now. That’s my condition.”
Color filled Fritz’s cheeks and she suddenly looked furious. “I’m not calling you that.”
Rogers threw his hands in the air. “For the love of God, Fritz, are you serious!? She couldn’t have made an easier request. Just use her fucking name.”
“It’s not her damn name,” Fritz argued. “Don’t you see that this is a ploy? She’s trying to get us to view her as human. Then we’ll start treating her like human and acting like she’s human. We’ll start to lower our guard and let her start manipulating us further until she gets what she wants. She already has some of us in her coils.”
She glared at Scotts as she said the last part, but he didn’t rise to the bait, and Rogers didn’t give him the opportunity. “All she wants is for you to call her Alice. People give pets names; think about it like that if you have to. It’s not a big deal, all of us already call her Alice anyway, and it hasn’t changed anything after all this time.”
Fritz began muttering under her breath again, shaking her head. Scotts once more reexamined his theory of Fritz’s lustful desire for her Alice, and her refusal of treating her as anything even remotely human was her way of coping and resisting temptation.
“Bitch, will you just use her damn name!” Ramirez suddenly snapped, surprising them all.
Fritz’s eyes widened at Ramirez’s profanity; it was quite out of character for her. But Ramirez had had enough, and wasn’t about to let the head scientist’s stubbornness get them killed.
Lips thinning, Fritz turned back to Alice, who gave her an expectant look. More color filled Fritz’s cheeks in a blush as she struggled to make her mouth work. “Alice…”
She’d said it as little more than a whisper, and Alice turned her head slightly. “What?” she asked, even though it was obvious that she had heard her.
“Alice,” Fritz said louder, her voice full of frustration.
A smile spread across Alice’s face, and she looked entirely too smug. “Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Fritz’s fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white. Scotts actually had to hold back his own smile as he looked back at Alice. “So you’ll help us?”
Alice glanced at him and gave a small nod. “I’ll help you.”
Reaching out, Fritz shut off the speaker and turned back to the others. “Once we have her back in her room, none of you are to ever call her that name again.”
Rogers rolled his eyes. “For the love of God, what’s the big deal? It’s just a name.”
“I told you what the big deal is,” Fritz practically shouted. “She’s trying to worm her way under our skin. You forget that we’re not supposed to give her an inch. It’s a slippery slope.”
“We have more pressing matters to worry about,” Scotts told her.
“And you’re all likely making it worse,” Fritz retaliated. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the moment we let her out, she’ll kill all the women and androids before going after the specimen, then she’ll rape the men and make them her sex slaves until she can coerce them into bringing her to Earth.”
Rogers scoffed. “Then I guess it’s a good thing the ship doesn’t work.” He walked over and picked up the flame-thrower. “And that we have this in case she does make a move against any of us.”
Fritz still didn’t look convinced, but she was overruled. And so she stood by as the code was punched in and the door to Alice’ room slid open.
Slowly, Alice stepped out of the room. Rogers kept the flame-thrower aimed at her in case she made any hostile movements, but she kept calm and collect as she exited her room for the first time. Hesitantly, she reached out, running her hand over the walls, then she looked at the others. Her eyes found Scotts, and he saw joy in them. She was simply happy to be out, despite knowing what was in store for her.
Fritz, however, made her displeasure quite evident, even as a blush stained her cheeks at having the object of her desires standing just a few yards away, and sought to ruin the moment. “And so you’re out. I hope you enjoy it while it lasts, because it will be the only time.”
The smile left Alice’s face as she locked eyes with Fritz, and what sounded like a small growl escaped her. Rogers held the flame-thrower at the ready in case she attacked, but Alice remained where she was.
“I will enjoy it,” she said with determination.
Cypher offered her a smile. “Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Now,” he motioned to the monitors, “we will keep watch on the monitors so we can see where you are. Since the com-links are no longer working, we’ll speak to you using the station’s PA system. If we see the specimen anywhere, we’ll guide you to its location, so you can-”
“That won’t be necessary,” Alice interrupted. “I can find it on my own.”
With that, she turned and began to walk away. She opened the door, and was about to walk through it when Fritz spoke again. “Just remember what I said, don’t force us to come after you once the job is done. We have ways of capturing you, and if it comes to that, the punishment will be severe. If we have to, we will even resort to lethal methods, even go to Protocol Zero if we must. Do you understand?”
Alice stood in the doorway for a moment before glancing back at her. “Do what you must,” she said, and then the door slid shut behind her.
The others stood in silence, having put all their hopes in Alice. Scotts still didn’t like the idea of sending her after the Xenomorph alone, but then he reminded himself of just how deadly Alice was. He had considered giving her a weapon, either the flame-thrower or the gun, but knew that wasn’t a good idea. If she turned on them, and the logical part of him knew that there was a very good chance that she might, then they would need them to use against her.
Cypher interrupted his thoughts with a question. “What, may I ask, is Protocol Zero?”
There was a moment’s hesitation before Ramirez answered. “It’s an absolute last resort. It sets the Atlas to self-destruct. All traces of anything onboard will be obliterated.”
Cypher’s eyebrows rose. “Quite the drastic measure, don’t you think?”
“It’s to be expected,” Fritz replied. “She is a threat to the entire human race.”
(-)-(-)-(-)-(-)-(-)-(-)-(-)-(-)
Alice walked through the Atlas with determination. What she had told Cypher was true, she didn’t need guidance. She could tell where the Xenomorph was, and made her way to its location.
How she knew, she couldn’t tell. She sensed it, in a way. It was a trait of her kind, like a psychic link of sorts. It seemed that the Xenomorph had inherited a bit of this ability as well, for she had been able to feel it ever since she regained consciousness.
What she sensed though, she couldn’t really explain. It was too incoherent. She felt aggression, bloodlust, purpose, a desire to spread its species, an instinct similar to what she felt when it came to breeding, but different. But that was all she sensed from it. She supposed it made sense though, either because their minds were too different, or because that was the extent of their connection. Either way, it was enough for Alice to pinpoint the direction of what she was sensing, and so she headed towards it.
She was wary, of course. Back when it had been a mere Facehugger, she had detected that it was a threat. That feeling was several times greater now, and her instincts were telling her to go in the opposite direction. To stay away from the danger. Yet she pressed onward, knowing there was no getting away from it, not with them all stuck on the Atlas with it. That only left the option of facing it, and better sooner rather than later.
In any case, she could still hardly believe that she was actually out of her room. Truthfully, after being locked inside of it for the whole six years of her life, she didn’t think that she would ever be able to get out. Yet here she was, walking around freely. Or as free as she could be. She recalled Fritz’s promise of having her locked back in the room after the Xenomorph was dealt with, along with her threat of there being unpleasant consequences if she refused to comply. True, she could always fight back and resist, but that came with its own series of consequences and drawbacks.
Honestly, Alice wasn’t entirely sure what her next move would be once the Xenomorph was out of the way. She would just have to wait and see. But first, she had to deal with the real problem at hand. And while her instincts told her to avoid the danger, her logical side knew that there was no escaping it while she was stuck on the Atlas, and so fighting back became the best option, the only option really, and it would be far more advantageous if she were the attacker. Even so, she couldn’t help but be on edge.
She was close now; she could feel it. And suddenly, she sensed a change in the Xenomorph through their link. It had become aware of her presence. It was likely sensing her as well, and what she detected from it was akin to what a predator felt when stalking its prey.
She caught sight of something in her peripheral vision and looked up to see a camera on her. If it was still working, then were the others watching her? Most likely. She knew that they didn’t trust her, and she didn’t blame them. She didn’t exactly trust them either. But right now, they were relying on her to get rid of a mutual threat. After that, she would have to decide what to do with them.
For now, she needed to remain focused. The Xenomorph was making its way towards her. It had left the ventilation shafts it had been in, she sensed that much. And it was approaching her. If she focused hard enough, she could almost catch quick flashes of what it was seeing. She saw a slightly distorted image of a hallway through eyes from behind the exoskeleton part that covered its upper face that it could apparently see through, and it was on the move.
She pulled her mind out of its. She needed to be aware of her surroundings so it didn’t pop out and surprise her. But she sensed that ambush wasn’t exactly its intention. In fact, if what she was feeling was accurate, it could tell that she was looking for it as well, and it stopped to wait for her.
She was close now. It was close. Just around this corner. Heart pounding, she peaked around the side to find a dim corridor. It seemed that the Xenomorph preferred the dark, suggesting that it was nocturnal. Alice’s eyes adjusted quickly though, and she inched her way around the corner. Her eyes darted around, looking for anywhere it might be hiding.
As she walked along, something stretched out from the wall. The creature’s tail. It reached for her, almost beckoning her from the place where the Xenomorph lurked in the shadows, blending in with the station. Alice froze as she felt its presence, and then a distorted static-filled sound came over the PA system. Someone was trying to speak to her, someone from the monitoring room, likely Scotts, and she thought she heard him say part of her name as his voice was lost amongst the static.
There was no need for the warning though, as her own sharp senses had picked up on the danger, and she slowly turned to the reaching tail. It retracted back into the shadows, and a figure moved within the darkness. It slowly rose from its curled-up position, and then stepped out of the shadows.
Every instinct Alice had was telling her to run as the Xenomorph stood less than a dozen feet from her. She felt a brief moment of confusion from it, which she realized was likely due to the link it to sensed between them, before it cast its confusion aside, and then she sensed nothing but hostility from it. It opened its mouth wide, exposing its second set of inner jaws, which opened as well, and let out a hiss.
Alice’s eyes narrowed, and she hissed right back at it. In her current form, however, that may not have come across as very intimidating; the Xenomorph certainly didn’t seem concerned. Perhaps a change in attire was in order.
Reaching up, Alice pulled off her hospital gown and tossed it aside. The Xenomorph briefly glanced at it before looking back at her and hissing again. Alice showed no sign of fear, despite what her instincts were warning her of. She stood naked before the alien, holding out her arms, then she began to change. Her skin shifted and her skeletal structure changed, her entire appearance becoming something else as she resumed her Species form. In this form, her human nature dulled as her Species nature dominated her more.
The Xenomorph cocked its head to the side as it took in her new form, almost as if it were curious. But then it seemed to no longer care and nipped at the air in a threatening manner. Alice snarled at it in response, the sound not sounding even remotely human. She began to circle around the Xenomorph, and it moved with her, keeping them facing each other. It went from a standing position to a more crouched position, and Alice let out a cry, holding her arms out in challenge.
From the safety of the monitoring room, the others watched as the two got ready to face off against each other. Everyone had their eyes glued to the screen, unable to look away.
“This is recording, isn’t it?” Fritz asked.
Ramirez gave her a look of disbelief. “Are you kidding me?”
“Absolutely not,” the head scientist replied, not taking her eyes off the screen. “We can’t let this opportunity go to waste.
“I must concur,” Cypher agreed. “This will be quite informative.”
Fritz nodded, then motioned to the monitor. “Start recording. All the cameras.”
Ramirez stared at her for a few moments before shaking her head and went about to start recording. “Insensitive bitch,” she muttered under her breath.
Fritz either didn’t hear her or was too engrossed by what was happening to care to respond. Scotts was unable to look away as well, only his reason was more out of concern for Alice’s safety. “Come on, Alice. You can do it, baby.”
They watched the monitors as, a moment later, the Xenomorph pounced.
(A/N: Haha, cliffhanger. Sorry, but I had to stop it there. But don't worry, we'll be getting a nice fight sequence next chapter. A Species versus a Species-Xenomorph hybrid. That's going to be interesting. I must admit, I enjoyed creating the confrontation between Alice and Fritz in regards to Alice getting her to by her name. It was a symbolic thing really. But was Fritz right about it being a ploy on Alice's part to make her be seen as more human to the others? But then, will that even matter if the Xenomorph manages to kill her? And what if she kills it, then what will happen? There's lots of unknowns, so stay tuned.)
