********** By the time I got home all I wanted was to take a shower and go to bed. I didn’t know why I’d thought I could chance seeing Egon again. I scrubbed myself clean and curled up in bed. I flicked on the TV, hoping to take my mind off of the past. I was preparing to watch the local news, and the leading story was about the Ghostbusters on the job at Trump Plaza. With a groan I shut off the TV. I’d had problems sleeping in the past, so, reluctantly, I dug the prescription bottle out. I took one pill, and, thankfully, I fell asleep. When I woke up it was light out and I could hear Aiden in the living room. I looked to the clock and saw it was almost noon. I groaned and forced myself to get up. I knew Aiden was smart enough to get his own lunch, but I liked to give him home prepared meals whenever I could. I pulled my hair into a sloppy ponytail and dressed in sweatpants and a baggy Guns N’ Roses t-shirt. When I came out of my room Aiden sat on the couch eating a Twinkie and typing one handed on his laptop. He looked so much like Egon I was sure they would realize they were father and son if they met. Like Egon, Aiden wasn’t particularly interested in the people around him. Sometimes the most obvious things went completely unnoticed by both of them. Their brains were just way more attuned to scientific pursuits. "Hey, Kiddo, what are you working on?" I asked him. "Hey, Mom. I’m sending Austin an e-mail with a link to an article about... well, do you know anything about the satellite that’s falling to Earth? They’re working on a way to shoot it down." He dumbed it down for me and finished his Twinkie in two bites. "Yeah, I heard something about it." I yawned. He finally looked up to me. "Wow, Mom, you look horrible." He frowned. "Thanks." I smirked. "I took a sleeping pill last night." I admitted, moving into the kitchen. Aiden followed me. "Sit down. I’ll make us lunch." He said, pulling out a kitchen stool for me. "I slept hard, Kiddo, I’m not dying." I chuckled. "You only take those pills when you’re too upset to sleep. Was it the wedding invitation that upset you?" He asked, handing me a can of diet cola. "How did you know about the wedding invitation?" I asked him, resting my head on my hand as he made us tuna salad sandwiches. "I saw it laying next to the phone. It’s Peter Venkman’s wedding. Is he my real father? Is that what’s got you so upset?" Aiden asked. I could hear the uncertainty in his voice. I’d admitted to him two years ago that Matt wasn’t his biological father. We’d been looking at pictures when he realized Matt and I both had descending earlobes, and he didn’t. He had taken the news well, and he’d never asked who his father was. I had wondered how long it would take him to become curious. "He’s a Ghostbuster, right?" "Yes, Peter Venkman is a Ghostbuster, but he is definitely NOT your father... he’s your uncle. We haven’t spoken since our father’s funeral fifteen years ago. He blamed me for our father’s death, and he disowned me. I was very surprised to get the invitation, but I don’t think I’ll be attending the wedding." I told him. Aiden set the sandwich in front of me, and he sat down with his own. "Can I meet him? Do you think he would be okay with that? Actually, I’d like to meet all of the Ghostbusters." "I don’t know, Aiden. I’m not sure he really sent the invitation. It might have come from the woman he’s marrying. She might have thought she was doing something good by reuniting us. There’s a lot of... history... that maybe should just stay where it is." I tried to explain. "Mom, I want to go. If we get there and he gets mad we can leave. I just... I want to know more about where I come from. I understand you’re not comfortable talking about my father, but at least give me a chance to know all of the rest of my family... please?" He asked me, and I knew I couldn’t deny him. "Aiden... I just want to protect you. I know you’re fourteen, though, and, if you really want to meet your uncle, I’ll do my best to make that happen. I just hope you don’t think any less of me." I sighed. He gave me a tiny smirk. "Too late for that." He teased. "Go ahead, push it, see where that gets you." I smirked back. There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do for my son, but that didn’t mean I didn’t regret it. I was a mess the rest of the week. I wasn’t sleeping much, but I didn’t want to take the pills. They made it too hard for me to wake up, and I had to be at school by half past seven to be ready for the day. On Wednesday night I actually fell asleep long enough to dream. I dreamt of my father’s funeral, and I woke up from the nightmare wringing wet with sweat. When I got up from the bed to go to the bathroom I stubbed my toe on the nightstand. It had been shifted about three inches forward. After that I couldn’t sleep. I seriously thought about not going to the wedding. I didn’t want to disappoint Aiden, though, and I couldn’t send him alone. There was a very high probability Aiden would learn the identity of his father that day, and I couldn’t send him into that situation alone. I’d just have to do my best to keep a level head. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
