A day or two went by and Aislinn seemed to remain a little distant,
although she tried not to be around James seeing that it tended to worry him.
One afternoon, the Captain requested a meeting with the Admiral and he promised
that he would return to Aislinn as soon as possible. She nodded and smiled and
he left feeling confident that she would be alright on her own.
Aislinn had something on her mind that she felt only one person could
answer and finally she could wait no longer to ask. James being gone only made
her think about it even more and now she had the time. Putting on her cloak she
left the cabin and made her way through the series of halls and down the stairs
into the bowels of the ship. Quietly she found what could only be described as a
dank hole in the ship by the smell of it, and the feel of dampness in the air.
Looking around she saw lamps lit on the walls and curiously ventured in a
little further never having been down in the ship this far. It was no wonder,
she wasn’t really allowed to be down here. Even though no one had told her
outright, it was assumed that that was a given.
“Well look what we have here . . . her pious little royal majesty has
decided to honor the prisoner with a visit.” A chill went up Aislinn’s spine
recognizing the voice that spoke to her instantly and she stepped back a little
not catching where it was from right away. Looking around she saw the cell the
boy was locked away in. As James had promised, he was locked in the cell with
shackles and irons on his hands and feet. There was certainly no way he was
going to be getting out soon.
Slowly and carefully she approached the cell looking at the boy between
the bars. “What are you doin’ here. What do you think I am, some kind of
freak show for you to come gawk at?” The boy hissed at her through the bars.
“I . . . I wanted to ask you a question.” Aislinn said timidly.
“May I?” She was very quiet and very polite where most people wouldn’t be
for volumes of reasons. Not to mention she was scared out of her wits and
didn’t want anything more then to bolt out of there as fast, if not faster,
then her feet could carry her.
“No ones stoppin’ ya.” The boy said impatiently.
Aislinn looked at him stepping closer to the bars so that nothing was
obstructing her view. “Why did you do that?” She almost whispered. “Why
did you attack me on the stairwell.”
The boy looked at her slyly and started to laugh. “HA! Are you joking?
A good lookin’ girl like you? Surprised someone hasn’t done it sooner. You
aren’t exactly the approachable type, I knew that from the first time I saw ya.
I knew if I was going to get what I wanted . . . I was going to have to take
it.” Aislinn was starting to feel very ill and uncomfortable and stepped back.
“But then to keep you quiet about it, was gonna have to get rid of ya. Before
you went squawking all over the ship about it. Runnin’ to that father of
yours.”
“AISLINN!” A voice came from the stairs. Quickly the young woman
backed even further away from the cell, caught in her venture. James, the
Captain and several of the officers came down from the stairs walking over to
them. “What on earth are you doing down here! You know your not allowed down
this far into the ship! You’re supposed to stay on the upper levels!”
The boy smirked, “Can’t get enough of me she can’t. Guess she
didn’t quite want to be rescued on those stairs . . . tell ya what. Unlock the
cell door, I’ll finish what I started.” Aislinn looked horrified and turned
away for countless reasons. That he had said such a thing, and that he said that
to James who was her husband.
The guard officer smacked the cage and before anything else could be said
by anyone, Aislinn covered her face and ran up the stairs completely humiliated
and ashamed. Norrington looked over at the rude prisoner and walked closer to
the cell. “You know . . . you are quite lucky that my commission will not be
in place until my arrival in the Caribbean. Otherwise you’d find yourself
being used for fish bait off the back of this ship.”
“He still might.” The Captain said looking at the boy as well.
“Despite that, as soon as our arrival in port you are going to be
turned over to the magistrate and brought up on every charge in the book so I
suggest you keep your comments to yourself and not speak unless spoken to,
minding your manners.”
“You can’t blame that on me, she came down here, I didn’t go after
here this time.” The boy said with a roll of the eyes.”
“There was no law that said you had to speak back to her, and you
certainly didn’t have to let the filth that spewed out of your mouth sully her
ears.” The Captain said in a stern tone.
“You don’t talk to her, you don’t look at her, you don’t even
acknowledge she exists for the remainder of this voyage young man . . . or I
promise you, you won’t make it to port.” Norrington said. “My wife has
suffered enough for your stupidity and I’ll not have her suffer a moment more
. . .”
“She’s your WIFE!!!” The boy exclaimed. He started to laugh, “Oh
for Christ sake I thought she was your daughter.” Norrington rolled his eyes
and looked at the guard. The guard nodded and started to head into the cell as
the officers all left the brig heading back to the upper levels of the ship.
James waited for a long while lying awake as he stared at the ceiling in
silence. It was one of those nights where he wanted to go to sleep but he was
anxious and sleep seemed to refuse to come no matter what he tried to do. He
looked over at Aislinn for several moments seeing that she was sleeping before
looking back towards the ceiling once more.
Tapping his finger on his chest a moment he looked towards Aislinn again
finally making a choice and rolling over wrapping his arm around her as he
carefully stroked her face with the back of his fingers. Placing a gentle kiss
on her nose, then her lips, then her chin he let his fingers trace down her chin
to her neck and slip under the tie of her gown pulling the bow and unlacing it.
He stealthily slipped his hand between the material and her skin and caressed
her breast ever so tenderly leaning down once more and placing gentle kisses to
her neck and shoulder.
Norrington could feel her breath start to deepen in her chest and at last
she took a deep breath and then let it out indicating that she finally had
awoken. At first, it startled her to have hands on her in such a fashion and her
eyes popped open and her body tensed. “Shhh. It’s alright.” He whispered
letting her know it was just him. Then he placed another gentle kiss on her
lips, and then another letting his hand caress her breast a bit more before it
slid back up to her neck and then coming to rest against her cheek as he kissed
her a bit deeper.
She started to kiss him back reaching up wrapping her arm around his neck
as he lay over her but she stopped opening her eyes as her hand braced against
his chest. “James, we’re aboard the ship, remember?” She said softly.
“Hadn’t really escaped my mind dear.” He replied looking into her
eyes. He sighed a little bit. “I . . . would really . . . really appreciate it
if you didn’t turn me away Aislinn. I know that our surroundings aren’t very
. . . comfortable for you, but . . . it may not be as bad as you think.”
She looked at James a moment before her eyes shifted looking around the
cabin. “The door is bolted, no one will walk in. It’s well after dark,
it’s hours before daylight. What are you worried about?” James said pleading
his case. A blush came to Aislinn’s cheeks.
“I . . . I’m not always . . ” She whispered. “I can’t always
control . . .” James smirked a little trying to suppress the grin knowing
exactly what she was talking about. He tended to enjoy the sounds she made, they
were rather cute sometimes and quite arousing.
“A trifle worry.” Leaning down he placed a gentle kiss to her neck
caressing her breast again knowing that she had to have been eager for a little
affection too. Aislinn wasn’t sure about this, but it seemed she wasn’t
halting his advances this time. James found this encouraging and he wasn’t
about to jinx the opportunity.
With a careful move, he raised the sheets just enough to move them out of
the way so he could lay over her and he took her into his arms, kissing her
passionately trying to keep himself from becoming overly excited. His touches
were tender and slow as he felt her arms slide around him and her hands come to
rest against his shoulders.
Norrington reached down between them pulling her nightgown up over her
hips and leaned up just enough to move out of the way, and Aislinn lifted her
arms over her head as he pulled it off tossing it aside to the floor before
wrapping his arms around her again hungrily consuming her lips enjoying the
sweet taste.
While one arm wrapped around her, his other hand started to slowly travel
down her side over her soft skin to her thigh. Finding her knee, he pulled her
thigh up and wrapped her leg around him as he positioned himself over her
pulling her body against his. Then his hand once again slid up the length of her
body and cupped the side of her face as he kissed her once more both bodies
breathing deeply against one another.
Carefully, James brushed against her to give her fair warning before
slowly letting his body find her soft womanhood and gently sliding into her
quivering entrance. A chill of pure pleasure went up his spine at the feel of
her causing his eyes to close as his arms held her tighter. As he came to rest,
his eyes slowly opened as he gazed down into hers feeling her hands gripping to
his back a bit. He smiled a little before placing a soft kiss on her lips and
lowering his head to her neck and caressing her soft skin with his warm lips.
His hips started to thrust inside of her with steady deliberate movements
as he held her close. Aislinn kept her eyes closed and he could feel her body
stay tense, and her legs shake about him a little with each of his movements. He
thought that was interesting and raised his head to look down at her to see what
she was doing. Aislinn’s eyes were closed tightly, and she was biting her lip
as he could hear the smallest whimpers every now and then. But you had to hold
your breath to hear them. Norrington couldn’t help but smile a little
realizing that she was trying to keep herself silent.
Repositioning himself just a bit he let his hands slide down her
shoulders and reached for her hands gently taking them from around him as he
pushed them down onto the bed entwining his fingers with hers as he pushed a bit
deeper inside of her. When he did, Aislinn gasped a little as her eyes opened.
She swallowed the lump in her through as her hips thrust upwards sliding down
beneath him a bit. The Admiral’s hips started to thrust a bit faster in
response.
Aislinn closed her eyes and even though she had been keeping silent
before now she accidentally cried out unintentionally. Both of them had the same
reaction as Norrington’s hand quickly moved to clasp over her mouth, firmly
but gently and her hand had had the same intention but he was faster. Norrington
could feel himself nearing his end and moved a bit harder and faster keeping his
hand firmly over Aislinn’s mouth until finally he burst deep inside her
shaking warm body beneath him.
He held her there for a moment, leaning his head down on her shoulder
feeling her warm breasts heaving against his chest resting his head against her
soft skin. Then he kissed her shoulder and her neck more then grateful for the
experience. As he leaned back up to look at her, he paused seeing her two blue
eyes starring up at him with a strange look in them he wasn’t expecting to
see. He looked at his hand that was still clasped over her mouth and then looked
at her eyes. Oh God, how could he forget. He swallowed, having a bad taste in
his mouth suddenly as he carefully took his hand away from her face lowering his
eyes hardly able to look at her.
“Did I hurt you.” He asked, not knowing what else to say.
There was a moment of silence. “No.” she said quietly.
“Aislinn . . . I didn’t mean to quiet you in such a way. I wasn’t
thinking.” He said apologetically.
She looked into his eyes for several moments, “You didn’t hurt me.”
She repeated. James continued to look into her eyes, feeling as though a wrong
has been seriously committed and something needed to be said. There was some
feeling that was sparked in her that made her feel very uncomfortable with the
simple action of his hand clasping over her mouth to keep her from making a
sound. He started to say something but it was cut short.
The emergency bell started to ring and all hands were being called on
deck. It was late, it was not a drill. Norrington hated this, it couldn’t have
come at a worse time. “Get dressed.” He instructed Aislinn not wanting her
to be caught unprepared, not knowing what was going on as he quickly got out of
bed to dress and hurry topside.
The Admiral came on deck heading towards the aft of the ship where the
Captain was to see what was going on, dodging the sailors and crewmen on the way
who were scrambling to their stations. “Admiral Norrington.” The Captain
said greeting him.
“Is this something I truly want to know about.” The Admiral said as
he was handed a spyglass. He looked through it to see who the alarm was raised
for and sure enough, they were being pursed by none other then a pirate vessel.
“They’re flying pirate colors, sir. It seems they intend to attack as
soon as they are within range.” James could hardly believe it.
“What sort of foolish pirate would dare try to take a military vessel
that had not engaged them first?” James said lowering the spyglass. “If
there was a brain in the Captain’s head they’d want to avoid us at all cost.
They aren’t even trying to hide, they haven’t doused a single lamp.”
“Admiral, you are the ranking officer aboard the vessel even though you
haven’t received your commission yet. In times of war the decisions are to be
left up to you. What do you want us to do?” The Captain asked.
“Well if it can be avoided, there is a woman on board, and civilians,
confrontation at this juncture wouldn’t benefit anyone in the slightest.” He
looked through the spyglass again. “It could be possible that they’re ship
has been damaged . . . or they have severely wounded onboard and are looking for
aid of some sort.” James thought for a moment. Then he made a decision. “We
have vastly superior firepower. When they get a bit closer, see if they lower
their colors, or perhaps send a long boat. If not . . . get them in range of the
long nines and see that there is one less pirate ship in these waters.”
The men all saluted and agreed as the Admiral handed the spyglass back to
the Captain. “Not a single person from that vessel is to set foot on this
deck, or the smallest piece of cargo is to change hands. Not even a parchment.
The last thing we need is for an epidemic of disease to sweep the ship.”
With that James turned and went back below. There was something seriously
amiss with this situation. Who knew what sort of trouble that ship was bringing.
It was well into morning before the two ships were in any sort of
position to make contact with one another. The military vessel positioned itself
squarely in firing range, so if the pirate ship made one false move, it would be
their last. A long boat was dispatched and pulled along side the military vessel
but its passengers were not allowed to disembark. Every gun on deck was pointed
squarely on those who were in the boat as the Captain and the officers came to
the railing to see what exactly was going on.
“Ahoy! You on the ship!” One of the men called from the boat.
“Sirs! May we come aboard!”
“Stay where you are!” An officer answered back. “Do not attempt to
approach any further or else you will be fired upon. State your purpose.” He
ordered.
James stood with the Captain and their surgeon in the infirmary. “This
boy will be dead by tomorrow. His brother won’t be far behind him.” The
doctor indicated the two boys who lay in the room. The Admiral listened intently
with his arms crossed.
“Are they in anyway contagious.”
“No sir. I wouldn’t have let them aboard if they were. They’re
dying from infections no amount of amputation will help at this point. It’s
simply to far advanced. There isn’t anything I can do. One of them has
pneumonia, he was dead before the infection set in.” The Admiral looked at
them.
“What were children of this age doing on a pirate vessel, and what
would those criminals care if they died.” He inquired.
“They were the Captain’s sons.” The Captain answered the
Admiral’s question. “It was the only reason they risked chasing a military
vessel down, knowing that it may have very well signed their death warrants. It
was a last attempt to save their lives. That’s why they turned the boys over
to us under a flag of truce. Hoping that we could help them.” The Captain’s
eyes shifted back towards the younger of the two. “They sailed away with the
slim hope that they had saved them by giving them up.”
Norrington sighed looking at the two young children that were slowly and
painfully expiring, hearing one of them coughing gasping for air. Obviously the
one who had pneumonia. “See that their made as comfortable as possible.”
James ordered before he turned and left the infirmary.
A few days later, James had found that he was sitting alone in his cabin
by himself far more often then usual. Quite a bit more then he liked. Finally he
slammed his book closed and tossed it aside and left his cabin to seek out
Aislinn.
After a while of searching, he came to the infirmary and was stopped by
the surgeon who seemed rather high-spirited for a man who had the grim duty of
watching two young children slowly die. “Admiral Norrington . . . your looking
rather well today.”
“Yes . . yes thank you.” James said arching his brow slightly. “You
seem to be quite . . . high in spirits yourself.” He said. Then he simply
shrugged deciding that the man must have had found someway of coping with what
had happened. “I was out and about looking for my wife, and I was curious as
to weather or not you have seen her recently . . .”
“Oh she’s here.” The doctor said brightly.
Norrington starred at him a little shocked. “She’s here?” He said.
The surgeon nodded with a smile, “Yes she’s right in here with the
children. She’s been looking after them for the past several days.” Without
even the slightest explanation he turned to show the Admiral the way. James
couldn’t believe it, how could the surgeon allow a young lady to look after
dying children. Even worse, how could he have let Aislinn be going off to do
such a thing without even realizing it.
As he turned the corner however, he froze in place. He saw Aislinn
sitting on the floor with a smile and the two boys awake, conscience, looking
quite healthy and having regained much of their color. The one boy who had been
coughing seemed to be breathing more easily then the last time the Admiral had
seen him. She was reading them a book and they looked quite content to have her
company and to listen to her story. James had never seen anything like it and
the Surgeon looked pleased as punch just as in awe of the progress as anyone
else who saw what was going on.
The surgeon didn’t seem to want to disturb the story so he motioned for
the Admiral to follow him back out to where they had come from. “Isn’t it
amazing? Their fevers have almost disappeared completely. They’ve regained
their appetites, their bodies are fighting the infections full force.”
“What the bloody hell is going on?” James blurted out unable to
control or taste the words before the past his lips. The doctor was excited, the
boys were alive . . . and healing and Norrington couldn’t understand it.
The surgeon looked shocked for a moment and then he realized he hadn’t
quite explained anything. “Oh . . . forgive me. As I explained, both boys were
dying when they came aboard. They were hours from death when they came from the
other ship. Lady Norrington was kind enough to want to extend some prayers, but
when she saw them she told me that she recognized some characteristics of their
illnesses. She suggested some treatments, that I have to admit seemed quite
foreign and incredibly strange to me but I didn’t see the harm in them, the
boys had no chance of survival. Almost as soon as we started to treat them, they
started to improve. You can see the results . . . they’re healing rather
quickly.”
James looked towards the doorway where Aislinn was still with the young
children. “Was she trained by a surgeon at some point Admiral? Is that where
she gained such knowledge?” The surgeon questioned.
“No . . . she grew up in a convent.” James looked back at the doctor.
“Her father supported it and they were quite medically advanced. I suppose
that’s where she learned.”
“She saved their lives. They should have died. I didn’t have the
skills or the knowledge to help them.” The surgeon admitted. “She’ll make
a wonderful mother.” The doctor added as a compliment as they watched her
through the doorway entertaining the two children.
