Chapter Eight - A Burning Sky
“Light it now!” Will whispered urgently.
Anna Maria’s intent face showed for just an instant in the flickering
torchlight. She touched the flame to the black granules heaped on the sand, a
small flicker of light blossomed and the fire began to hiss and spit before
starting to run along the trail of gunpowder that led up the beach.
“Back to the Pearl
hurry!”
Will dragged Anna to her feet and pulled her at a run to the waiting long boat;
they splashed through the waves and with a dive jumped for the bobbing craft,
barely tumbling in before the four pirates began to pull at the oars powering
their way back to the ship with sure fast strokes. Will and Anna Maria looked
anxiously back at the dancing flame; it looked so small against the blackness
of the night and Will felt a touch of nerves, that
this idea might not work. He was still looking back when they bumped against
the side of the Black Pearl; he gave a start and turned to look upwards as
strong hands pulled the boat skyward. The instant that all feet were on deck
Jack let out a long breath and swung the wheel so that the sails filled.
Stealthily the Black Pearl sailed out from the beach and into the bay. All was
silent on board but for the creaking of timbers, the flap of canvas sail and
quick footsteps as men rushed to obey Jack or Will’s hand gestures. There was
no moon, clouds obscured the stars and the wind was starting to tease at the
sails, cautiously they edged out around the point and into the open water. Here
lay the danger, if Jack was Norrington he would have
vessels patrolling, but the ocean was empty and they were quickly behind the
peninsula hidden by the island once more.
“How long” Jack whispered to Will as his first mate came to join him at the
wheel.
“I estimated about twenty minutes, so something should happen soon” Will looked slightly worried, on paper it had looked simple but
really there was no guarantee that his plan was going to succeed. The minutes
ticked by and Will thumped his hand into his palm.
“It’s failed Jack…best make a run for it…”
Jack raised a finger a slow smile spreading across his face “listen” there was
a low rumble that rose to a dull roar and then a shocking explosion that made
their ears ring. Above the island, the sky lit up as flames shot hundreds of
feet into the air.
“Well that would have got Norrington’s attention”
Jack was grinning, laughing as he clapped Will on the back. “Let’s go I am
thirsty.”
“Keep all lights out – follow the orders” Will was striding down the deck as
Jack heeled the Pearl to catch the wind.
The sails filled, she shuddered once and then she was flying.
*
With all lamps extinguished the Pearl flew through the
dark as if she was kin of the night, twice they saw other vessels racing
towards the island which was still burning, the flames a beacon rising into the
sky. The second ship passed within a mile of them but no alarm was raised and
they watched as her lights got smaller and smaller dwindling to just a pinprick
before they disappeared. As the new day dawned clear and fresh Jack dismissed
half the crew ordering them to get some sleep. However, they had only been gone
an hour when sails were sighted on the horizon, British sails.
“I have had enough of bloody running for one day” Jack muttered to himself,
“rouse the crew,” he shouted “make ready to board.”
Gibbs thundered below decks bellowing at the top of his lungs “Up, up you
scurvy dogs, there is a sail in sight.” There were pounding feet below them and
the sound of Anna Maria’s voice yelling something unintelligible but her tone
was clear.
“I think another message for Norrington might be in
order, the words to go with the pictures” Jack smirked at Will and he grinned
in response.
“Take the wheel for me mate” Jack motioned at Will “I will go talk to our most
beloved crew.”
“Course straight ahead Jack?”
“Aye they will be expecting us to turn tail, the Pearl bearing down on
them will give some pause for thought.”
Will nodded and held the wheel steady, feet astride, wind blowing his curly
hair back from his face.
“Now mates” Jack was saying as he strode up and down the deck “Commodore Norrington had arranged a fine welcome for us back there,
shame we had pressing engagements elsewhere. But what say you we give these
boys a taste of what the others missed?”
There was a chorus of cheers and much sword waving in response, Jack grinned
and clasping his hands together in a prayer like gesture, he dipped his head to
his crew as small smile curving his lips.
“Now my gentle friends no needless bloodshed we want that ship to deliver our
message to the dear Commodore, there needs to be men to sail that clumsy tub.”
More cheers and Jack raised one hand and looked hard at one of the men “Scotty
that means no fire son, I know you like a nice cheery blaze now and again but
not today.”
The sailor in question old enough to have been Jack’s father gave a gap toothed
smile and nodded “aye Cap’n I’ll not be torching nuthin..”
“Good lad …now best pirate faces on ladies and gents and be ready to board on
my command.” Speech finished Jack leapt up the stairs to take the wheel,
telling his first mate in a few terse sentences the plan.
The crew crowded up against the rails, swords drawn, faces eager as they yelled
curses and challenges and made enthusiastic obscene gestures in the direction
of their enemies. The Pearl drew ever closer to
her prey. The Black flag with the grinning skull was hoisted and the wind
caught the fabric tossing it around so that the gap-toothed mouth seemed to be
laughing. Shock had replaced complacency on the faces of the English sailors,
fear clearly visible as they suddenly realised that
the pursuers had become the pursued, it was too late to change direction, no
time to reset the sails, the Pearl was upon them before they had fired a single
canon. Just as well Jack was thinking they had very little gunpowder left
below, Will’s little diversion having used almost all they had. The men were
ready, ropes and grappling hooks in their hands waiting for the command to
board. He turned the wheel swiftly hand over hand bringing the Black Pearl
along side the clumsy English vessel named much to Jack’s amusement “The
Swift”.
“Board her now” he bellowed, “mind that you keep to the plan.”
Loud yells burst from the throats of the crew as they swung across; feet first
one hand at a rope the other with already drawn swords. The air was soon thick
with the sounds of curses, screams and clashing steel.
The fight such as it was, was over quickly, the unconscious littered the decks,
a couple of dead scattered in between but the crew had followed Jack’s orders
and there were few fatalities. Will had swung over with the first wave, sword
in one hand and dagger clenched between his teeth, directing the battle until
Jack arrived. Anna Maria was left at the Pearl’s wheel holding her
steady, one of the few that Jack trusted with his beloved ship. The English
Captain had thrown down his weapons without much persuasion, Will having had
him pinned against the mast within minutes of the ship being boarded.
“Get away from me pirate” the bewigged Englishman hissed “you filthy
godforsaken scum.”
“Now now Captain” Will spoke mildly “there are ladies
aboard, you wouldn’t be using that language at home now would you?”
“Ladies, ha! no ladies here just trollops and thieves”
the man had begun to splutter.
Will shook his head sadly “Now don’t be saying something that you might regret
mate, those ladies are friends of my Captains, and he gets a little irritable
when someone insults his friends.”
The Englishman stared at Will his face flushed with rage, his wig dirty and dishevelled.
“Hello mate” Jack called out as he picked his way daintily down the deck,
stepping over and around the unconscious or the prisoners that now sat
sullenly. He held out a hand “Captain Jack Sparrow, no doubt you have heard of
me.”
The man ignored Jack’s hand but nodded his face pale “what are you going to do
to us?” he managed to croak.
“Do” Jack echoed “well my fine fellow today is your lucky day, I want you to
deliver a message to Commodore Norrington, you were
sailing to meet him I take it?”
“That pirate is classified military information...”
Jack held up one hand “blah blah….so forth and so on,
I am not wanting to know what Norrington
had for breakfast son, I just want you to deliver a message to him. Savvy?” he
fixed the Englishman with a hard look “what is your name?”
“Johnson” the man flushed a little then raised his chin. “What is your message,
I will make sure that the Commodore gets it.”
“William” Jack turned and motioned Will forward from where he had been leaning
on the rail watching, a small smile on his face. “We have a letter to compose,
I dare say the Captain will offer us the use of his cabin” he raised an eyebrow
and continued in a loud whisper “it is of a delicate nature mate, the Commodore
and I, well we go back a long way.”
“If you will follow me” Johnson said stiffly
“Don’t trouble yourself” Jack motioned one of the young boys over “I am sure
that this lad will be happy to show us the way.”
The boy nodded and grinned lopsidedly, Jack clapped a hand on his shoulder, the
boy was thin his bones hard under his hand and Jack frowned slightly. “Lead the
way” he said and the boy followed by Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner
disappeared below decks. As they vanished down the stairs Jack was heard asking
the young lad where he had sailed from and if he honestly liked life in the
Royal Navy.
