Loki: Thanks for your
review. You'll have to wait a bit for the smut, but it isn't that far
off.
Morningstar: Glad you
liked the last chaps. Hope you won't be mad at me for what I do to
Alex and Jonathan, but it's important for the plot.
Ariane: I have included
a bit of Nefertiri's POV just for you.
Chapter 8 – Facing the truth
She stealthily walked towards the side temple. That
her worthless opponents had arrived before her complicated matters,
but Nefertiri wasn't someone, who allowed others to thwart
her plans. Regarding the scene in front of her, she realized, that it
might even turn out in her favor.
The young one, she searched the memories contained in
her body for his name – Alex, wasn't paying attention to his
surroundings. She noted, that he drew hieroglyphics
into the sands, forming words she didn't bother to read. He could be
useful to her, because she would need the blood of her kin for the
ritual to work.
And the memories inside her told Nefertiri, that the
body she inhabited had given birth to this child. He would not be the
grandest of blood sacrifices, but he would be sufficient to calm the
spirits of the underworld, that guarded the mirror against use.
Creeping closer, she could hear voices coming out of
the hole in the ground, the boy sat next to.
“Well at least we have the key and can go now.”
They were about to climb up and they had the key. Hurrying
her steps, she drew an Egyptian dagger out
of her belt. The boy was oblivious to what was about to happen,
totally absorbed in his scribblings on the floor. Closing her hand
over his mouth, while simultaneously pressing the dagger to his
throat, Nefertiri pulled him up.
“Da...mmpf.” The small muffled cry escaped between her
fingers.

Weary about what his son had done this time, Rick stepped onto the
chest and stuck his head out of the underground chamber. The sight he
encountered caused the blood to freeze in his veins, his heart
frantically pumping to keep it going.
Evy stood in front of him, one of her arms clamped over Alex
mouth, the other pressing a dagger to his throat. 'No, no, no.' The
shock had momentarily wiped all coherent thought from his mind.
Slowly climbing out of the hole he addressed
his wife.
“Evy? What are you doing?”
“Don't insult me by calling me this name.”, the tip of
the dagger pressing deeper into Alex throat, nipping the skin and
causing a single drop of blood to escape. “I am a princess of
Egypt. A low being like yourself has no right to call me by any
name.”
Behind himself, he could heard Jonathan and Ardeth scrambling out
of the chamber. Their faces most likely looking as stricken as his
own. The two of them stepped up next to him and Jonathan asked:
“Evy?”
“Silence.” Her voice had dropped down to a dangerous
hiss as she regarded the three men. Alex had stopped struggling,
because that would have sunk the dagger deeper into his throat, but
he regarded his father with pleading eyes.
Rick was frozen on the spot. He couldn't move, he couldn't think,
while his heart was crumbling in his chest. His voice was filled with
pleading as it slipped out of his mouth: “But he's our son.
Don't you remember? Have you forgotten your love for him? For me?”
She laughed before she answered him. “You are such a
pathetic being. The one you call Evy is dead. She welcomed me, when I
entered her body and she barely resisted when I killed her soul. The
child is naught but a tool to me. Now if you want him to live, hand
me the key.”

Ardeth could see, that something in Rick's eyes had changed,
hardened, when he turned to him. “Give her the key.” His
posture was slightly slumped, defeat radiating off his body. Ardeth
felt his heart constrict at seeing the one
he loved, look so beaten. But he was also concerned for Alex. The kid
was very brave for his age, although he tended to get himself in
dangerous situations. It reminded him of
the way he had been at that age.
Slowly inching towards Nefertiri, he gave her the key, hoping that
she would loosen her hold on Alex's neck. But she didn't give him
even the slightest chance for an attack without risking Alex's life.
Nefertiri was too good at judging them. She knew, that as long
as she had the boy at her mercy, she held power over them.
Slipping the key into a hidden pocket,
she addressed them again. “And now tell me where I will find
the next key.” Rick quickly contemplated
the possibility of lying to her, but her next words pushed that
thought out of his mind. “If you dare mislead me, I shall not
merely kill him, but make him suffer a day for every word of deceit
coming from your mouth.”
Rick was willing to rather have her find the key, than harm Alex,
so he recited the words he remembered: “His children guard the
waters of the Nile as he guards the key. Not birds nor mammals await
you at his home, but razor sharp teeth. The key can only be taken by
those, who slay the Nile's fiercest warriors.”
The smile, that crossed Nefertiri's face was unbelievably cold.
Pressing a small kiss to Alex's temple she started to walk backwards.
Her boat was waiting for her and she had found someone reliable to
steer it. Rick, Ardeth and Jonathan followed her moves, but she
motioned them to stop with a sweep of her hand.
“You have what you want. Now let go of my son.”, there
was a hardness underlying Rick's voice, that neither Ardeth or
Jonathan had ever heard before. It sounded
almost as cold and emotionless as Nefertiri's did.
“No. You will not move from where you are standing until I
am out of your sight. Then I might release the boy. If you don't...”
she pressed the blade, firmer against Alex's throat, whose eyes were
wide with fear and pleading.
Nefertiri quickly backed off towards the boat, never letting her
eyes leave the three men standing in the small temple. Their anger
was evident in their faces, but it was underlain
by fear for the child. Arriving at her boat, Nefertiri stepped into
it, pulling Alex with her.

As soon as the boat was gliding away from the island Nefertiri
eased the dagger off Alex's throat. Alex started to struggle, when
she tried to bind his hands on his back. The small boat rocked
dangerously and Nefertiri lost her balance, letting go of Alex's
wrists. He had no chance to get the key or
the book, that lay in the boat, so he dived into the water.
Swimming as fast as he could, Alex tried to reach the isle, before
Nefertiri and her servant managed to get the boat under control. He
looked over his shoulder to see, that they were already following
him. The distance was shrinking and they would reach him, before he
managed to get ashore.
Suddenly Rick, Ardeth and Jonathan appeared at the water's edge.
“Dad.”, Alex called out to them, hoping that they'd be
able to stop Nefertiri.
The sound of Rick's gun was extremely loud in the relative
quiet of their surroundings, causing flocks of birds to rise from
nearby trees. He could hear curses in Egyptian
as Nefertiri ordered her boat farther away from them and into the
stream.
By the time, Alex finally reached the shore again, they were
already shrinking into the distance. Rick pulled him out of the water
and hugged him tightly, stroking his hair. They quickly bandaged his
neck, before getting into their own boat and off the isle.

They stood at the harbor of the small town close to the temple
isle. A large ship was tied at the dock, currently being loaded for
his impending departure. Rick had talked to the Captain earlier and
had managed to book passage to Cairo for Alex and Jonathan.
“But, dad. You can't send us back. It will be boring and...”
“No. It is far to dangerous. You will stay safely in Cairo
and Jonathan will watch over you.”
“Think about it Alex. You can spend all of your time at the
library and I...”, seeing the dangerous look on Rick's face,
Jonathan paused for a moment, “...will of course not let you
out of sight for a second.”
“But, it's so unfair. You get to have all the fun. Besides,
who says that Cairo is save, huh?”
“I'm afraid your son is right, O'Connell. There is a part of
the ritual I hadn't thought about before and for that Nefertiri would
need the blood of her own kin. The first place she will go looking
for them is your house in Cairo.”
“And where do you suggest they stay then? They can't come
with us. It is far too dangerous.”
“If they are inclined to do so, your son and brother-in-law
may stay at the Med-jai village. They would be guarded by the
warriors.” Ardeth unhooked the necklace he wore and put it into
Jonathan's hand. “I have people watching your home. Show them
this and they know that you are my guests and take you to the
village.”
“Cool. Dad, may we go? That would be way better, than
sitting around in Cairo.”
Rick agreed and hugged his son, before sending him to
the ship. He watched as Jonathan and his son got on board. When the
ship pulled out of the small harbor, Alex waved enthusiastically,
while Jonathan's hand gestures looked a little wary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the boat had vanished into the glow of the
evening sun, Rick turned around to Ardeth, who had been silently
standing beside him the whole time. The Med-jai looked thoughtful as
the red sun illuminated his face with a fierce glow. 'He's
beautiful.' The thought brought forth memories of Evy being lit up in
a similar way. Memories that felt like daggers stuck into his heart.
Pushing them aside for the moment, Rick started to speak.
“Do you have an idea, where we have to look for the next
key. We are already falling behind again.”
“We have to go to the temple of Sobek at Kom-Ombo. The
riddle must be referring to him, as he is a
crocodile god...”
“And crocodiles are neither birds nor mammals and have
pretty sharp teeth.”
“We should ride out as soon as possible. Maybe we can catch
Nefertiri, before she reaches the temple.”
It was already well past midnight, when they stopped.
They had covered a fair distance, but the horses were tired and
needed rest. Setting up a small camp between two sand-dunes, Ardeth
built a fire and started boiling water for tea. Rick told him, to go
to sleep, before sitting down at the fire and staring into the
flames.
