Chapter 8 – Depression
The next day found Jack sitting slumped in a chair behind one of the few tables in the Faithful Bride that didn't have some form of card game being played on top of it, a half empty bottle of rum clutched in his hand. Across from him sat Gibbs and Anamaria, both of whom were talking, though the captain wasn't paying them any attention. His mind and thoughts where on Will. The boy had hardly spoken since getting back to the Pearl the night before, and when questioned about it, had said he was fine, though that clearly wasn't possible.
"Cap'n?" Gibbs questioned Jack, after he'd questioned him some minuets ago and still hadn't earned him self a response.
"Uh?" Jack answered somewhat confused.
"I was saying Captain that we're meeting the new men down at the docks in front of the Pearl in less then an hour, so we should go and get things set up."
"Yeah…sure mate. Tell you what. Why don't you and Ana go get things ready. I'm going to go check on Will and then I'll met you there in a little while. Savvy?"
"Aye captain."
Raising the bottle to his lips, Jack gulped down the remainder of the alcohol in one go before throwing the bottle at the far wall, watching it shatter into a million little pieces. Standing, he reached into one of his many hidden pockets and pulled out a coin. Flipping it into the air and onto the table, Jack headed towards the bar to order another bottle before heading back to the Pearl.
On board the Pearl, Will sat in silence, staring out across the water, his mind in turmoil. Elizabeth and the Commodore? How could she do this to him? He had loved her! Standing, Will headed back into Jack's cabin in search of a bottle of rum; something anything to make the pain go away. Settling into the chair he and Jack had made love in the day before, Will pulled his legs up to his chest and hugged them. Taking ag oug out of the bottle, Will rested his head on the back of the chair and took in a deep breath, the unmistakable smell of the pirate captain filling his nostrils, giving him a small moment of comfort. He wished that Jack were near so that he could wrap his arms around the older man and take refuge in the captain’s arms. Taking another swig, he closed his eyes and allowed his mind to drift back to memories of an earlier time.
"I should have told you from the moment I met you! I love you." There it was said. He had spilled it all. His deepest and darkest secret: He loved the governor’s daughter; a girl that stood way out of his level of class; a girl that he would never be able to have, but all the same one that he had risked his life to save. He could still remember the brief look of shock that overtook her features at his words, and the brief feeling of dread that he had ald tod to settle into his stomach before his mind was once again moved to more important things. Jack, the Pirate Captain was standing on the gallows about to hang, and he had to save him. He loved him; a forbidden love, but it was there all the same.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Will realized that he had loved the captain all along, a fact that he had known. However, it offered little comfort to the betrayal that Elizabeth had done to him. Sighing, he stood. Why did he feel this way? Pacing back and forth around Jack's cabin, Will grew more and more agitated with each passing minute. His head throbbed as his blood angrily pumped through his body, the need to hit something and cause harm building deep within his system; a feeling that scared and comforted him at the same time. Taking another swig of rum from the bottle still clutched tightly in his hand, Will turned and exited the cabin, heading out on deck.
Once on deck, Will needed someone to talk to, wishing once again that Jack were nearby. Looking around he was mildly surprised to see no one around, sighing in frustration, he began pacing back and forth once again, stopping every so often to take a swig of rum. Suddenly, a loud creaking noise stopped him in his tracks. Unsure as to what the cause was but not feeling alarmed, Will headed over to the side of the Pearl to look down into the water. Seeing nothing, Will sighed, drinking more rum. Placing his hand on the Pearl, he was immediately rewarded with a sense of calm enveloping his body, followed by the sound of wood crea aga again. Sighing in contentedness, he patted the wood. "I know girl. Don't worry. I love Jack. I'm just confused." Wood once again creaked in response, but Will didn't hear it, as he was busy downing the remainder of the rum in the bottle. Once finished, he chucked the offending item over the side of the Pearl and headed back inside.
Grabbing his sword, Will sighed. He knew he was about to do something incredibly stupid, and that if Jack where around the man would probably kill him, but it needed to be done. Grabbing his new pirate jacket, Will stormed off the Pearl in search of something to ease his anger.
Jack arrived back at the Pearl a little while later, worry edged on his face. Stepping onto the Pearl he didn't need to head to his cabin to know that the boy was no longer on board. The Pearl told him. Sighing in disbelief, Jack spun on his heel and stomped off the ship. Where in the seven seas of had had that boy gone off too? And why did he have the feeling that the whelp was about to do something stupid?
Following his gut instinct, Jack headed towards the taverns. The boy had more pirate in him than he was willing to admit, but thankfully it was that fact that Jack was counting on to be able to find the missing boy. He just hoped that he would be able to get there in time
************
Will stalked towards a tavern that he had never been in; one theldheld what looked like scum to his eyes. Stepping inside the door, he looked around. What met his vision stopped him briefly in his tracks, and made him think that coming in here wasn't one of the smoothest moves he'd ever made. The dregs of the pirate world resided inside; men that made Barbossa look like a saint; the kind of pirates that would just as soon murder you in cold blood than look at you. There was not a friendly face to be found among them. Swallowing a small lump in his throat, Will tried to remember just why his mind and body had led him to such a place, but came up blank.
Deciding that this maybe wasn't the place to cool his burning anger, Will turned towards the door to leave. Unfortunately, he didn't make it far before he was roughly grabbed from behind. "Jus' where do ye think you're going twerp?" A deep, unfriendly voice called out viciously, while painfully twisting Will's arm up behind his back. "Looky here fellas, we got our self a pretty boy," he said as he pulled Will practically off the ground by his arm. Crying out in pain and frustration, Will kicked out with a foot, connecting with the pirate's shin. Crying out in pain, the pirate dropped Will in a heap on the floor. Sighing in relief, Will began crawling out of the way. However, his relief was short lived as another pirate stepped in front of him blocking his way.
Will didn't know what hit him. Rage grew in his gut, and before he knew it, his sword was out and the man standing before him was now clutching his shoulder in agony as blood seeped out of a giant slash to his shoulder. Turning, Will knifed his sword through the air connecting the blade with the cutlass of the first pirate. Circling, the two eyed each other nervously. Thrusting his sword at the pirate that stood before him, Will watched somewhat stupidly as the man's eyes bore shock and he slumped to the ground. Pulling his blade back, Will found the end dripping with the pirates blood.
Shock grasped him then. Dropping the sword to the ground with a clatter, Will looked desperately around the tavern, all the while backing out the door. Once he was free, Will turned on his heel and started to dash back to the pier where he knew the Pearl would be docked waiting for him, and with any luck so would Jack.
Rounding a corner, Will ran head long into a solid form, causing him to fall to the ground in a heap. Terrified that one of the pirates from the tavern had circled around him, Will's hand reached for his sword but only found empty air. Fear rose up in him then as he remembered dropping his sword after he had killed the big pirate. Looking around he uselessly looked for an item that he could use as a weapon.
Jack looked down at Will. He'd been walking along, grumbling about how the boy couldn't see fit to stay were he had left him, and had seemed to find the need to disappear and head off to trouble, when suddenly out of nowhere a solid form had plowedo hio him, causing him to just barely be able to stay upright. Grasping his cutlass, Jack looked down at the figure. It didn't take him long to realize that the weapon wasn't needed, and the figure was only Will. Kneeling down before the boy, Jack reached out his hands and lightly touched Will's shoulders. Will immediately reeled as if he'd been burned by fire. He still had yet to look up, so knew nothing of his attacker other than that the man, who ever he was, had just touched him, and that was something that he just couldn't allow. Looking desperately around, his eyes landed on a bottle a few feet away. Twisting out of the man's grasp he crawled towards the bottle and grasped it in his hand.
Jack watched Will with a mixture of concern, irrita, an, and confusion as the boy pulled away from him and practically dragged his body across the ground, away from where he stood. What Jack neglected to notice was the bottle that Will had managed to grasp in his hand. Taking a tentative step towards the boy not wanting to frighten him into running, Jack softly called, "Will?"
Not hearing anything other than the blood pounding through his veins past his ears, Will missed Jack's concerned voice. But he didn't neglect to notice that his assailant was coming nearer. When the man was just close enough, Will stood to his full height and swung the bottle at the man's head, letting out a breath he hadn't known he was holding when he heard the bottle smash across what he hoped was the man's forehead. Turning on his heel, Will dashed off towards the docks once again, in search for the Pearl and Jack.
Jack collapsed to the ground in sheer agony. The whelp having shattered an old rum bottle on his head, darkness danced before his eyes, coming to the very door step to claim him. Taking deep, difficult breaths, Jack some how managed to keep the darkness at bay. Passing out in the middle of the street in this part of Tortuga would be a death sentence. Taking a couple more breaths, Jack managed to stand somewhat wobbly, pressing up against the near by wall for support while he tried to get his bearings. Bringing his hand to his head; Jack wasn't all that surprised to find blood oozing out of it.
Groaning Jack willed his legs to obey him, somehow managing to stumble down the street back towards the docks. About twenty feet from the Pearl, Jack's stamina failed, and he collapsed hard to the ground as the blackness came to claim him.
Ana and Gibbs stood idly by the Pearl. A long line of both men and women lined up, ready to sign onto the Pearl crew stood before them. All they needed now was for Jack to return so that he could have the final say in which men and woman would be allowed to board the Pearl. Both heard Willpounpounding footsteps as he raced down the dock, his face a mirror of terror, pushing past them he hurried onto the deck of the Pearl not even bothering to acknowledge their presence. Eyeing each other wearily, both wondered what could have happened to make the boy so nervous. Deciding that what ever it was needed to be found out, Ana started to make her way up the gangwo seo see if she could track down the youngest member of the crew and find out just what had happened to spook him so. However, she was barely half way up when she noticed her captain staggering towards them. Dread filled her system. Heading back down the gangway, Ana motioned for Gibbs, and together the pair ran to Jack's side just as his feet gave out and he stumbled towards the side of the dock, almost falling into the water.
Skidding to a halt, Ana dropped down on the ground next to Jack, immediately taking his head and cradling it in her lap, eying the blood oozing out of his head wearily. Gibbs came up a few seconds later, and dropped to the ground as well. His face mirrored the worry in hers. Reaching out, the older man gently probed the wound, sighing in relief when he found that other than a nasty bump and a large cut, there was no other damage done to the already somewhat crazy captain’s head.
"W..ill?" Jack's voice startled both of them, looking down Ana smoothed Jack's hair back from the wound.
"He's on the Pearl, Jack."
"He alright?"
Jack didn't know why he wasn't raving mad, but for some reason his pain-clouded mind was extremely worried about the whelp who had just injured him.
Sighing Ana looked down at Jack, "I don't know Captain, but I'll go check just as soon as we get you to your cabin."
But Jack never heard her, as blackness had come to claim him again.
