Spar with George? Kehlan had no doubt how that would end. He would wipe the floor with her. She had seen him fight more than once and he was of a standard that she could never hope to match. Blindfold him, tie one hand behind his back and he would still wipe the floor with her – and do so quickly and effortlessly without even breaking a sweat. Even so, she trusted him. He would not harm any more than her pride and she had no doubt that she would learn from the experience. Taking a deep breath, she nodded in acceptance of his invitation. “Yes. I will spar with you.”
*****“D’tai’kai’te!”Lying on the hard, metallic deck, gasping for breath, Kehlan ignored the command to fight. Three times previously he had given her that command and three times she had obeyed only to find herself flat on her back.“D’tai’kai’te!” The Elder repeated the command, a note of impatience entering his voice as his half Klingon student did not move.Kehlan shook her head in blatant refusal of the order. This wasn’t working, she thought. He was bigger, stronger and faster than her, not to mention infinitely more experienced. Adding insult to injury, they had fought side by side often enough that he knew her fighting style inside out and back to front.“He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious.”The words slipped into Kehlan’s mind as she lay on her back, pondering what do to. It was something her martial arts teacher had said, way back when she had been a student on Earth. The sensei, a blue skinned Bolian who despite appearances had been an expert in his field, had been full of obscure quotes and this one, she remembered had been one of his favourites, from Sun Tzu’s Art of War. The book had been required reading but she had not understood it at the time. Sun Tzu had had a lot to say about the benefits of deception, a concept that seemed counter to everything Kahless had ever said about honour in battle. Now though, as she looked up at the large Predator from her supine position on the floor of his kehrite, she thought she was beginning to understand.Snippets from another quote came to mind. “If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him… pretend to be weak so that he may grow arrogant… Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.” The glimmerings of an idea began to form. The huge Predator took a step towards her. “Get up, Kay-lan.”Her mind frantically working, she shook her head again. “If I get up you’re only going to knock me back down. I might as well save you the trouble and just stay where I am.”“You yield then?” George enquired. “You told me that Klingons did not surrender.” He sounded disappointed; he had not expected her to give up so easily. Despite appearances Kehlan had no intention of yielding to him. Size and strength were not everything; her teachers back on Qo’noS had told her that often enough. In that at least they were in accordance with Sun Tzu. If George knew her fighting style then she just needed to change it and come up with something that would catch him by surprise. Just a little closer, Kehlan willed him mentally, come on, one more step… She remained still, biding her time, waiting for him to underestimate her.As Kehlan had hoped, George took the step forward and did something he had not done for a very long time – he underestimated his opponent. It was a mistake that sent him crashing to the ground as with unexpected speed, Kehlan’s weapon spun around and made contact with his ankles, knocking his feet out from under him. Instantly Kehlan was on her feet and bringing the weapon round to touch his throat. Kehlan grinned at the look of surprise on his face. “No, I don’t yield,” she told him, “Do you?”The Predator started to move only to freeze as the pressure at his throat increased. It had been a very long time since he had lost a sparring match and he had only himself to blame. She had, he realised found a way to compensate for his superior size and reach. The move was legitimate; she had not actually yielded and she was still well within the painted circle that marked the boundaries of the combat zone. She had tricked him and he had fallen for it. He had allowed himself to become complacent, had underestimated his opponent and had assumed he knew everything she had to offer. It was a rookie mistake and one that in combat could get him killed.“Do you yield?” Kehlan asked again, the grin on her face making it clear she was enjoying this brief moment of victory while it lasted. He let out a rumbling sound that would have been much more menacing had he not been lying on his back. In truth it was something of a cross between a growl and a trill of laughter as anger, embarrassment and amusement warred for supremacy. “I yield,” he conceded.Half stunned by the unexpected success of her gambit, Kehlan removed the weapon from his throat and stepped back allowing him to get to his feet.“Honoured One, the female cheated!” The accusation came from one of the group of watching Young Bloods who had come to the kehrite for their scheduled practice session only to find the ring occupied by their Elder as he sparred with his Klingon friend and had stopped to watch the show. “Cheated?” George had been aware of the audience gathered at the entrance to the Kehrite, but he had not expected this. He turned to see who had spoken and was not completely surprised to learn that it was Kal’rin-de.“The move was dishonourable.” Kal'rin-de insisted. He was still brooding over his own ignominious defeat at the hands of the Ooman marines commander at the beginning of the Hunt. It had been a fluke, he told himself; the Ooman had caught him by surprise. They were sly, treacherous, unworthy creatures and their help in cleansing the planet of the Kainde Amedha had been of minimal importance.Kehlan nodded in acknowledgement of the accusation. “Yes,” she admitted, turning to face Kal’rin-de. “It was a dirty move.” She approached the young hunter. “You need to understand something. When you are out there, hunting...” and she gestured vaguely into the distance, “your prey does not care about honour. It cares about surviving and it will use every dirty trick it knows to achieve that objective and escape with its life. If you do not wish to become the hunted, you need to be ready for that.”Anger and resentment building up inside and spilling over into ill thought out action, Kal’rin-de stepped forward and shoved Kehlan’s shoulder hard enough to send her staggering back a few steps. “Pyode Amedha!” he scoffed, “You scheme and cheat and presume to think you have something to teach us. You are nothing but prey!”His anger rising at the blatant disrespect shown by the Young Blood, George let out a warning rumble that Kal’rin-de, emboldened by the murmurings and trills from his compatriots, did not heed. “Your ploy was obvious,” he taunted Kehlan, “You are not capable of defeating our Elder. He obviously let you win.”Enough was enough, George decided. Kal’rin’de had gone too far. Pulling himself up to his full height, he stalked closer to the youngster, invading his personal space and forcing him to back up until he was against the wall and could go no further. “You offer grave insult,” he snarled, his tense posture and widespread mandibles clearly broadcasting his displeasure. “How DARE you show such disrespect?”One of the youngest warriors on the ship, Kal’rind-e had never had the privilege of hunting with the clan Leader. He had seen the Elder return seriously injured from the hive cleansing and now he had been defeated by Prey. He must have let the Ooman win, Kal’rin-de decided, the alternative... “If she beat you fairly,” he blurted, the words spilling out of his mouth before he could stop himself, “then maybe you are too old!”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
