Pleasurably tired and aching a little after a very successful hunt, the Klingon Security Captain returned to the ship. His injuries were minor - cuts and bruises; nothing to merit a trip to sickbay and it was unlikely, he noted with disgust, that he would even have a scar to show for the experience. Still, it had been a good hunt and the xenomorph tail blade that he, like the others had taken as his trophy, would make a good addition to his weapons collection.
He needed to get back to work. He’d been gone long enough, ‘playing hooky’ as his Terran wife would have put it. Shrugging at the idiosyncrasies of Federation Standard, Krang boarded Night Dagger and heading straight to his cabin, he secured his weapons. They would need to be checked over for damage and cleaned down and at some point, he would need to make a handle for the tail blade but he needed to clean himself first. He was filthy and stank of sweat, blood and the jungle. He grimaced. Here in the confines of the tiny cabin, the odour was decidedly unpleasant.Stripping off his soiled battle armour, he dropped it on the floor and stepped into the shower, singing tunelessly as he soaped himself clean again. 'ej HumtaH 'ej DechtaH 'Iw… 'ej Doq SoDtaH ghoSpa' Sqral bIQtIq…” And the blood ran ankle deep and the River Skral… It was an old drinking song and it perfectly suited his mood at that moment. But the fact that the River Skral ran crimson red on the day above all days when Kahless slew evil Molor dead, was something that would have to wait for later, preferably a later that involved Ten Forward and several mugs of good bloodwine. Cutting off the water supply, he towelled himself dry and pulled on a clean uniform before heading down to the briefing room that had become the centre of operations for the investigation into Jonathan Price. As he’d expected he found the team there waiting for him. Both Rhiana and Zhiva greeted him with a friendly smile as he entered. In contrast the sidelong glance that N’Sal gave him was wary, almost sullen and he repressed a sigh. She didn’t like Klingons and very likely never would and he knew she had good reason. His own actions, however justified they had been, had done nothing to help alleviate that. He was still not sure how Mackenzie had persuaded her to take the job and he could not help wondering if he would still have an assistant once they got back to the starbase. The Klingon frowned slightly. “What have you got for me?”Wordlessly, the red haired mercenary slid a padd across the table towards him. Picking the padd up, he activated it and read it carefully. The information it contained was detailed and damning. The investigative team had done a good job and the evidence, gathered from various intelligence and law enforcement agencies across the quadrant, was plentiful. All of it pointed to one thing – the man who called himself Jonathan Price and who was currently incarcerated in Endeavour’s brig, was a cold blooded contract killer!Rhiana had uploaded an image of Jonathan Price into the Tal Shiar database and a brief image parameter search promptly identified him as Jason Wood. She had also received confirmation from her contact at Tal Shiar headquarters, confirming that the records under Price’s name were falsified; set up in conjunction with Starfleet Intelligence to give Price a plausible cover in a joint operation against the Orion syndicate. The identification of the criminal as Jason Wood led to Zhiva being able to obtain his Federation record. Krang frowned as he continued to read. Originally a Starfleet cadet, Wood was an engineering and computer expert. However he had been cashiered and imprisoned for killing another cadet in his final year at the academy. The details of the case were attached to the report and Krang skimmed through it quickly. He let out a low growl. An honourable killing was one thing but this had been nasty. Subsequent psych evaluations stated that the subject was a convincing liar with strong psychopathic tendencies. Wood had been sentenced to a long prison stay at the Jaros II penal colony, but about half way through the Dominion War his prison had been evacuated and in the subsequent chaos, he had disappeared. It was very likely, the Klingon reflected, that Section 31 or another similar organisation had extracted him and then made use of him. His computer skills and his willingness to kill made him very desirable to such agencies. For obvious reasons, Federation records after his disappearance were sketchy but they indicated the possible use of various aliases and there was circumstantial evidence tying him to a series of serious crimes. He was wanted in both the Klingon and the Romulan Empire for murder and espionage – and, Krang noted, he was the major suspect in the assassination of a Romulan senator. The Romulan case was particularly noteworthy. Krang raised an eyebrow, glancing up at the blonde Tal Shiar officer. “Atmospheric failure? That’s interesting!”“Rhianna nodded, “At first glance it appeared to be nothing more than a tragic accident caused by a faulty scrubber; a simple engineering fault that led to death by carbon dioxide poisoning.”N’Sal looked up with a wry grin, the first signs of animation Krang had seen in her for some time. “Just because the Romulans are paranoid, doesn’t mean it’s not always justified. I remember hearing about the case. Senator Parnak was on board a transport to the Federation for a diplomatic conference so it caused quite a scandal.”“Investigations revealed tampering in the computer system,” Rhiana added. “Now, the ship signed a new crew at the beginning of the trip, something that is admittedly standard procedure for a freighter; they are always looking for new crew. Anyway, it turned out that a Terran male was one of those who signed on – and conveniently, jumped ship and disappeared when it docked after the accident.”Krang considered that. “And the DNA evidence found in his quarters was enough to identify the missing crewman as Price… Jason Wood,” he concluded. “Certainly the pattern is similar. The method of killing fits into what we know about him.”Turning his attention back to the padd, he continued reading. The more recent evidence, obtained from the Weyland Yutani databases, was what interested the Klingon the most. The rest was useful background information but this related directly to the current case. “The agent did well,” Krang said finally, placing the padd on the table in front of him. “She’s provided us with the missing link between Price, Moore and Weyland Yutani.” “We were right,” Zhiva said, “Weyland Yutani don’t want this alliance with the Yautja. With no treaty in place there would be nothing to stop them going after the Xenomorphs for their bio-weapons development programme. Admiral Moore received a very substantial payment to get an assassin on board the Endeavour.”“There’s no doubt a good market for illegal bio-weapons in some quarters,” Krang said disgustedly. “I note the agent blew her cover. Tell me, did they manage to get her out?”A wicked grin crossed N’Sal’s face as she answered. "Oh yes! Admiral Portway was quite smug about that, actually. Weyland Yutani learned the hard way that Starfleet is light years ahead of them in transporter technology. They beamed her out, right through their shields." Her mind fully on the investigation now, all traces of her previous moodiness had disappeared – and she would admit to not a little amusement as she imagined the corporation’s reactions to the disappearance of the spy in their midst."That's good news at least." Krang acknowledged. He got to his feet, “Thank you for all your hard work. If there’s nothing else, I’ll put a report together for the Captain. She’ll need to be briefed on this.” As senior officer, that responsibility fell to him. “Very well, dismissed.”The meeting over, Rhiana and Zhiva left the room, but to Krang’s surprise N’Sal hung back. After his actions during the interrogations, he had not expected her to wish to be alone in a room with him. At least, he amended to himself, not without a weapon in each hand. “There’s something else I think you should be aware of,” the Romulan told him. “Oh?” Krang tensed, wondering what was coming.“I spoke at length with Admiral Portway,” N’Sal said bluntly, deciding to just spit it out. “Much of what we discussed is not in the report. She is extremely unhappy about having to turn Wood over to the Civilian authorities.”“qu’vatlh!” Krang swore. His mind focussed on the evidence, the significance of Price’s true identity had escaped him until now. “He’s a g’day’t civilian!”N’Sal raised an eyebrow at the Klingon’s foul language but chose not to comment. “Which means he must be handed over for a civilian trial. Starfleet isn’t happy either. To have a civilian criminal get through all their security procedures, impersonate a Starfleet officer and commit a serious felony...”“It’s a huge embarrassment for them,” Krang acknowledged heavily.“I have no doubt,” N’Sal said cynically, “that had Price been a genuine Starfleet officer, there would have been a quiet court martial – with a news blackout of course, in the interests of Federation security, followed by a life sentence to a maximum security penal facility.”“But he isn’t a Starfleet officer and they can’t just cover it up and sweep it under the carpet.”“Kehlan’s official, written orders of course are to bring the prisoner back alive and unharmed for trial,” she continued. “While the Admiral has said nothing incriminating, she made it very clear that she would be very happy to see this entire mess quietly disappear.” She hesitated, before adding, “Portway’s exact words were ‘Tell Kehlan to deal with it.’”Worry creased Krang’s ridged forehead. He had known Portway for several years and she had a darker past than most people realised. Due to his work, he was in a position to know that she had come very close to a dishonourable discharge and possible prison sentence for feeding classified information to the Maquis. With the arrival of the Dominion and the beginning of one of the most destructive wars the Federation had ever fought, it had been expedient to ignore those allegations. “That can be taken more than one way,” he said carefully.“Exactly,” N’Sal said grimly. “An order as deliberately vague as this places the burden on Kehlan. If she were to be somehow convinced to hand Price... Wood… over to the Yautja or the Klingons, 'Deal With it' is carte blanche permission to do so and could carry... undue pressure with it. Furthermore..." The mercenary's lip twisted in disgust. "It will be Kehlan who is hit when the book is thrown if she follows Portway's verbal instructions over SFC's express orders!"Krang sighed. “Thank you for the warning, N’Sal. I will deal with it.”*****I do not own the Klingon drinking song. Lyrics are from the Deep Space Nine Episode: Way of the Warrior. (come to that, I'll remind you that I don't own Star Trek or Predator. Believe me, if I did, some of those movies would be very different - I do own my characters though)
Anyway, sorry it took so long to write this chapter, it turned out to be quite a difficult one to write. Hope you are still enjoying the story, I'm sort of assuming that since this is chapter 74, anyone still here must be enjoying it.. but it would be nice to 'hear' your thoughts and comments so if you are still hre, please leave a review... thanks. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
