The door leading from sickbay into the private side ward where George was resting slid open and a Vulcan female appeared in the entrance. Kihr’yende let out a low growl of warning before recognising her as the healer who had treated his father. She looked very different now, the blood-stained surgical scrubs replaced by a neat uniform. Her scent however identified her - a faint tang of copper overlaid with a hint of antiseptic and other unfamiliar chemicals, no doubt cleaning agents of some sort.
The Healer paused in the doorway. There was no visible change in her facial expression as she saw the Elder awake and talking with Kehlan but some slight change in her body language told Kihr’yende that she was pleased. She turned for a moment, issuing crisp instructions to one of her nurses before coming further into the room to examine the Elder. The Predator backed away, giving her the room she needed to complete her task, before asking “Is he well?”Looking up from her patient, T’lia offered Kihr’yende a slight, reassuring smile. She was beginning to get used to the way the Yautja growled. They did it a lot and she had begun to detect a pattern in the tone and pitch of the sound that indicated different meanings. Their language, the verbal language at least, was a fairly simple one, enriched with growls and clicks as well as subtle shifts in body language and even, she suspected, changes in their scent. It was similar with the Klingons although not to the same degree.“He is recovering well,” she informed him, “He will need to rest a while but provided he promises to take it easy whilst he finishes healing, I see no reason why he should not be discharged later today.”As he listened carefully to what T’lia was telling him, the Predator became aware of light footsteps approaching. They hesitated and faltered momentarily at the doorway before coming closer… a little too close. Instinctively he spun around to confront the newcomer before identifying her as the Ooman nurse that the Healer had just spoken to, bringing whatever equipment had been requested. Glynis had been busy assisting with the triage of the patients who were beginning to flood into sick bay as they returned from the hunt. The Yautja still made her nervous but she reminded herself that they were patients and had no reason to attack. They were huge with lean, powerful bodies that were almost naked and deep, growling voices, not to mention the weapons they carried but for now at least they were offering no threat and slowly she began to relax a little. She could do this, she told herself. She would adapt and learn. It was just all so different to the training hospital back on Earth. She’d seen very few aliens there, apart from a couple of Vulcan instructors and a Klingon student. There had been one or two others but they had looked so human that they didn’t count. Joining the crew of Endeavour, a ship with a higher than average proportion of non-human personnel, had been a massive culture shock. She had just finished applying a temporary bandage to the arm of one of the marines when she heard T’lia call her name, requesting that some equipment be brought. She hurried to obey not wanting to keep her boss waiting. Making her way across sickbay, Glynis picked up the tricorder and portable scanner that the Vulcan had pre-calibrated to Yautja physiology before hurrying to the side ward. The Yautja ambassador was a patient in there, she knew, recovering after major surgery. T’lia had allowed her to assist in theatre and it had been one of the scariest experiences of her life. The patient had almost died on the operating table and she had never felt so helpless as she watched the doctors fighting to save him.Focussed on the task at hand, the young woman took little notice of the large Yautja standing with his back to her as he spoke with T’lia. She was just about to hold out the scanner to the Healer when sensing her presence, the warrior spun around. The suddenness of his movement combined with the sheer physical force of his presence and the terrifying skull that was now only inches away from her face and right on her eye level, caused her to panic. Dropping the instruments she carried, she let out a shrill scream and backed away.It was all Kihr’yende could do not to wince at the painfully high pitched sound. The Yautja growled in confusion at the young Ooman female cowering away from him as her eyes flickered wildly from the weapons he carried to the skull and backLooking from the frightened nurse to the huge Predator, bristling with weapons and carrying that gruesome trophy, T'lia understood the problem. The healer sighed. She was going to have to have a talk with the young woman. Glynis was shaping up to be a good nurse and a useful addition to the medical team but she was far too skittish. Starship assignments were demanding and Endeavour seemed to have more than its fair share of difficult missions. Unless she saw some improvement, she was going to have to recommend a transfer back to Earth. It would be a shame to lose the nurse but T’lia needed to be confident that her staff could cope. Carefully she kept her tone calmly authoritative and reassuring as she addressed the young woman. "Glynis, go and finish cleaning the theatre please. And you..." She glared at Kihr'yende, "Would you mind not threatening my staff!""I do not threaten," he retorted pointedly. He spoke the truth; he did not need to threaten. The female had simply caught him by surprise and if he had considered her to be a threat she would be dead already. She presented no danger to the Elder however and he had not meant to frighten her. "I am sure you do not," the Vulcan said dryly, her glare intensifying, leaving the Predator feeling inexplicably nervous. Suddenly he understood what Rakai'in had meant when he had described this female. The Vulcan healer was indeed a force to be reckoned with. It was hard to describe, but there was an air of calm authority about her, reminiscent of a Yautja matriarch that made it difficult to disobey her. He shot a sidelong glance at Kehlan but there was no help from that quarter. If he was reading her facial expression correctly, she was trying not to laugh. His father was no better. The old Predator’s mandibles were twitching with barely suppressed amusement at his son’s obvious discomfort. With a soft huffing sound he flared his mandibles in disgust.Hiding her grin, Kehlan let out an exaggerated sigh. “Kihr’yende, for Kahless’ sake, don’t you have anything better to do than scaring my crew half to death?” She gestured towards the skull, “Go back to Yeyinde and put that thing in your quarters before someone has a heart attack! Besides, don’t you need to get it cleaned and polished or something?”Kihr’yende bristled at her tone but subsided, knowing that Kehlan was right. Actually he did need to return to his own ship. It was his responsibility to ensure that all was as it should be and that the Kainde Amedha queen was secure in her prison. At the same time, he did not like the idea of leaving his father alone and unguarded. There had already been a treacherous attempt on their lives and he could not be sure that there would not be another one. He glanced through the window into the main ward. Sickbay was starting to fill up now as the hunters returned and some of those waiting were Yautja. Briefly he considered asking one of them to remain with the Elder and guard him, but decided against it. It was better that they not see their Leader looking so vulnerable. He frowned, trying to decide what to do for the best.Looking back towards his father, his eyes were drawn to the scar on Kehlan’s cheek. No, he realised, he would not be leaving his father alone. Endeavour’s captain was a member of his clan and he had to trust her accordingly. “Kay-lan, you will stay with him?”Looking up, she met his gaze. “I will stay with him,” she promised, understanding his concern. “He is safe here.”Accepting her promise, he nodded. “Then I shall do as you say.”*****Thank you to the kind people who have left reviews for this story, especially Kapowallace... your support and encouragement is much appreciated.
Well, I had worked out that there would be 4 more chapters (including this one) until the end of the story. I have a synopsis and plan of attack all worked out. Unfortunately its not proving that easy. This chapter and the one that will follow, were supposed to be one chapter but the characters decided they had alot to say so it ended up getting divided into two..
