“Endeavour, the badge is in place and the queen is ready for transport. Lock on and energise.”
Khetara listened to the exchange of orders over the open comm. channel. It was this link between the three ships that had allowed her the luxury of remaining on board the Yautja ship instead of returning to the bridge of her own vessel. Until a few moments ago, it had remained quiet. For those remaining on board ship there had been little to do except wait. “Signal locked on… Energising.”A column of sparkling lights heralded the arrival of the Xenomorph queen in her new prison on the lower levels of the Yautja ship. Khetara stared in horrified fascination at the Alien queen as she materialised, the lights giving way to form and substance. It was the first time she had actually seen one in the flesh. She had thought she knew what to expect but the reality was breath taking, far more impressive and terrifying than anything she could have imagined from reading the reports and listening to the descriptions of the away team. She was staring at black, glistening death, the embodiment of every nightmare she’d ever had… or at least, she thought bitterly, the ones that didn’t involve being spaced.Freed from the ropes that had bound her, the queen spun round, looking for her enemies. Unable to find them and not understanding what had happened to her, she let out an unearthly screech before gathering herself and leaping at the door in a frantic attempt to free herself. In doing so, she became aware of her enemies on the other side of the barrier and threw herself at the door again, striking at it with her teeth and claws in an effort to break through The door shook under the impact but did not give way. Viscous slime from the queen’s fangs glistened on the window panel. Several inches of plexiglass separated them yet Khetara fancied she could smell the creature’s hot, foetid breath. She shuddered, “And you hunt those things for fun?”“Not for fun,” Rakai’in grunted, his attention on the control panel in front of him. “Begin the cryo-sequence.”Tearing her attention away from the captive queen, Khetara concentrated on the task Rakai’in had given her. With great care she began to tap in the sequence he had shown her, beginning the cryogenic procedure. Written in the Yautja language, the symbols on the panel meant nothing to her. She was doing this purely on memory.Immediately the temperature began to drop in the queen’s prison and in seconds the slime slowly dripping down the window had frozen solid. The queen’s movements had slowed and she was no longer screeching. Carefully monitoring progress, Rakai’in’s talons moved across his own console as he began to add in the cryogenic gases. He nodded in satisfaction before finally answering the question she had asked. “We do not hunt for fun. The Hunt is a way of life for us, not a sport. We must kill a Kainde Amedha drone to be considered adult.” He shrugged. “It is a true test of skill and ability. Not all youngsters survive their Chiva.”That was the difference between the Yautja and the Klingons, Khetara thought. They lived a lifestyle that the Klingons only dreamed of. In contrast, her own people were only children playing at hunting. Over the comm. system, they heard Kehlan gave the order for the second stage of the transport. The team currently trapped deep underground in the cavern would be beamed to the surface, well away from the cave system. As soon as they were clear, Kreltek would bring Ch’Tang swooping in low and open fire.“Energising now.” Khetara heard Qeytok acknowledge and a moment later, the whine of the transporter beam. Kihr’yende’s deep growl came next as he confirmed the group were safely on the surface. Then it was Kreltek’s turn. The sound of Klingon battle language – a much quicker, clipped version of tlhingan Hol, filled the air as the Klingon commander began the destruction of the Xenomorph nest. Khetara listened carefully to the flow of orders and information, ready to intervene should it be necessary but the operation had been well planned and everyone knew their job. With the queen in captivity, this part of the mission was mere routine.Satisfied that everything was as under control as it could be, Khetara looked back at the window. It was thick with frost. She could not read the numbers flashing on the console but she knew what they meant. The prison was cold now… freezing cold. As cold as space? The thought made her shiver. “I know the queen is bigger and more intelligent than the drones,” Khetara said, “But even so, I’m impressed.”“They are dangerous,” Rakai’in agreed. “Even experienced Hunters treat them with respect.”“They are a threat to the galaxy,” Khetara said, “Maybe an even bigger danger than the Borg.”Rakai’in snorted in disgust. The Borg are no threat to us.”The Klingon general considered that. He seemed unconcerned about the mention of the Borg, even contemptuous of them. “You’ve met the Borg?” “We have encountered them,” Rakai’in confirmed. “They came into our space and demanded our surrender. They said that resistance was futile, that they would add our biological and technological distinctiveness to their own.”Obviously that had not turned out quite how the Borg had imagined, Khetara thought. “And what happened?”The Predator flared his mandibles at the memory of a good fight. “They did not leave again,” he said matter-of-factly. “Resistance was futile… for the Borg. We destroyed them completely.” *****With the main objectives of the mission accomplished, both Kehlan and Kihr’yende decided to return to Endeavour, leaving Da’rian in control of the ground troops. Now that the queen was captive and her nest destroyed, there was no reason for them to stay. The hunting would continue for several days, until the Yautja were satisfied that not even a single Kainde Amedha remained alive.Kihr’yende was carrying the skull of the Nrak’ytara under his arm. Somehow in the chaos that had descended after the queen had disappeared, the Predator captain had found the time to hack his way back through the hordes of angry and confused drones and retrieve his trophy. It was a grisly sight but Kehlan smiled slightly, understanding what the skull meant to him although she could only imagine how her crew were going to react when they saw it. She remembered her confusion when George had removed the skull of her first kill and handed it to her. It seemed a lifetime ago yet it was only a few days. Since then he’d educated her on the subject and she knew that he still had her trophy hanging on his wall alongside his own first kill. What would her husband think, she wondered whimsically, if she insisted on hanging a Kainde Amedha skull on the wall off their shared quarters? No, she was content for George to keep the trophy for her.She sobered at that thought. The Elder had been badly hurt. There were no guarantees that her friend would even survive. Abruptly she hit her combadge. “Kehlan to Endeavour. Two to beam up.”*****Arriving in sickbay, they were informed by a very nervous looking nurse, that the Elder had been taken into surgery and that the Healer would speak to them as soon as she was available. In fairness, Kehlan thought, as the young woman beat a quick retreat, the Predator captain did look very intimidating; tall and powerfully built, he was bristling with weapons, his armour blood stained and that huge skull tucked under his arm.Kehlan was not sure how long they waited until T’lia, still dressed in her surgical scrubs, finally came out of the operating theatre to speak with them. The Predator captain let out a low, menacing growl as she approached. It sounded intimidating but in reality was nothing more than an attempt to hide his apprehension. There was very little that made Kihr’yende nervous and it was not an emotion he liked at all. His father was important to the clan, he told himself; that was all. He was no infant to be afraid of losing a parent. “Honoured Healer, will he recover?”“He is strong,” T’lia said calmly. Understanding the concern he was trying not to show, she was not particularly worried about his threatening attitude. Certainly if she had anything to do with it, the Elder would recover. Like any good doctor, she did not like to lose a patient and she had no intention of losing this one. His injuries had been severe and she’d been in theatre with him for several hours. Her first priority of course had been to stabilise his heart and get him breathing again, after which she had been able to concentrate on repairing the punctured lung and broken ribs. After that it had been a case of cleaning and healing the various bite and claw wounds that littered his body. “Yes, I believe he will make a full recovery. He is out of surgery now. If you’d like to come with me, I will take you to him.”At her instructions, the Elder had been placed in a private side ward to recover. It was better that way. T’lia did not need the large Predator clogging up her sickbay and scaring her staff. Ducking through the doorway, Kihr’yende’s growl had intensified at the sight of his father. The Elder looked frail and vulnerable as he lay motionless on the bio-bed.That had been a couple of hours ago. There was nothing they could do but wait for the Elder to regain consciousness. Since she was not needed on the bridge Kehlan remained nearby, although she had allowed T’lia to take a look at her own wounds while she waited. Kihr’yende had taken a little more persuading but had eventually given in. However reluctant he had been to let the Federation doctor examine him, he had to admit he felt better afterwards. The old Predator stirred slightly as consciousness began to return and instantly Kehlan was at his side. “George…. Come on George, you have to wake up.”His eyes opened. Blinking rapidly against the brightness of the overhead light, the Elder turned his head to stare at Kehlan. Confusion was evident in his amber eyes and at first he did not seem to recognise her. Then awareness dawned and the tension faded from his body, his mandibles twitching in a weak smile. “Kay-lan.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
