Chapter Seven
The Start
Leaving Tobias behind was harder than I could have ever imagined. For the last six Earth years we had always been there with each other, no matter what it was we were doing; even during my training he watched intently and learned to analyze and critique my movements.
I was hugging him and saying ‘see you later’, because goodbye meant that I was never coming back but, I was determined to make it back to him alive and Blooded.
I picked up my things and allowed him to slip a necklace that he made for me around my neck. We gave each other one last look then I turned away and started up the ramp of the ship. Tox was right next to me and Otic was standing in the background. She was going to be Tobias’s caretaker until we returned. Thaiden was planning on his own 'hunt' and we all knew it would keep him too busy to spend much time with Tobias.
It didn’t feel good leaving him mostly in the hands of such an unpredictable female, even though she reassured all of us that she was up to the task and Tobias had confidence in her. Thankfully he didn’t know about her past otherwise he probably would have come with me instead.
I stowed my things next to Tox’s for the short ride to the station orbiting the planet. We were to meet up with another clan and go with them since there were only the two of us. Thaiden had arranged it with one of his good friends, Thor’nak, who was more than happy to add two more able bodies to his hunting party.
I sighed and closed my eyes, determined to keep a steely resolve through the entirety of my trip, my hunt, my right of passage into the new clan and new traditions.
“Relax for a bit, comrade,” Tox said as he settled in for the ride. “We will keep each other safe.”
A sigh escaped me and I tried to do as he suggested but my blood was singing from a small amount of worry I held for Tobias. I didn’t know if he was going to be alright in the hands of someone I didn’t trust very much.
“He will be fine,” Tox said reading my mind. I sighed again and nodded, there was nothing I could do about it, I had to trust the Arbiter, Thaiden's older sister.
What seemed like only minutes later our ship docked and we were moving out to meet the other clan leader. I let Tox do all the talking and stayed behind him, I didn't feel like conversing with new hunters and he made sure no one bothered me as we moved to the new ship and put our things away.
“Food?” Tox asked as we finally arranged things how we wanted. He had requested that we share a room with each other and no one else, Thor’nak was more than happy to oblige us and it made me feel a little better. The last thing I wanted was to run into another male that had ‘needs to be taken care of’. It had been so long since I was picked on or made fun of or even propositioned that I forgot how to react to it. Tox was going to try and keep me safe from all of that.
“Yes,” I replied quietly while lying on my bed.
“We will explore afterwards?” he asked as he stood in the doorway. I looked up at him and nodded with a slight smile, he was going to keep me safe. He nodded to me then stepped out, shutting the door behind him.
Focus on the task at hand, I reminded myself while Tox was away. The thought kept playing over and over again in my mind keeping me distracted from everything else. That was until Tox came back, we ate then ventured out from our room.
The ship we were on was massive; it was an official roaming clan ship that could house hundreds if it needed too. It held four packs of unblooded warriors going out for their first hunt with us. The kind of hunt we were going on was especially dangerous because of the large volume of prey we needed to let everyone have a chance at killing at least one. Thaiden thought it was more fitting to give us the challenge which, if we didn’t use our skills to the best of our abilities, would be a suicide run.
"You seem troubled," Tox said as we neared a window. The corridor we were walking down was along the side of the ship. My thoughts were indeed troubled and I couldn't let it go.
"Seems I am," I replied staring out the window. I was starting to regret not taking Tobias with me. He had been a constant aspect in my life for a long time, always there at my side. Even when I slept for so long he was there when I woke.
I ached for him, reassurance was what I needed and I couldn't get it, not while on the ship riding to our most treasured ritual.
"Why don't we meet some of the others, get distracted?" Tox suggested and I nodded. It had been some time since either of us had been with several others our own age. Thaiden was running an experimental school and we were his first two students. He had only let us to go hunting because he knew that Tox and I would be taken care of.
We headed to the training room on the ship, it was nearly as large as Thaiden's reminding me that the ship was more than a ship, it was a home.
"Hail!" an unblooded called and my comrade and I nodded in his direction. He had been beating on a bag but paused and waved us over.
"Beira," he said as soon as we were close.
"Boedog," I said first then looked at my adopted brother, "Tox," I finished and he nodded to both of us.
"You are the two tagalongs?" he asked going back to his bag. He didn't mean it in a negative way and we all knew it so we just nodded. When the bag moved too far after a punch I instinctively stepped behind it to hold it. The small male nodded his thanks and continued to throw punches and a few kicks.
"Traditional training?" Tox asked our new friend and he nodded.
"We all have traditional training," he said taking a break. "My comrades generally tease me for being the smallest but, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger," he said then walked over to another station. He obviously lived on the ship though when we looked around he didn't look like any of the other students.
"You're not from the same clans," Tox stated rather bluntly. I almost hit him lightly in a reminder to not be rude to our gracious hosts but Beira just chuckled.
"Adopted," he replied with levity. "Had to prove myself many a time, I would be willing to do so again, if you like?" he teased Tox gently. Tox only grinned and shook his head. "I'm sure you are just as capable as the rest," my comrade replied and I almost hit him again. I growled instead but Tox just shrugged at me.
"You'll have to forgive my comrade, the air is thinner for him, makes him light headed and arrogant," I said a little sharply. Tox grinned again, shrugged again then moved off to watch two others train.
"He doesn't seem like your type," Beira said and my eyes snapped to him. How the pauk could he tell I liked males? "You're not from the same clans, either," he clarified and I relaxed. Hopefully he took my tensing up as me regarding his comment as an insult.
"Not even from the same planet," I said and stepped into position to spot Beira on his next workout.
"Why do you travel together?" he asked lifting a medium weight.
"We are like brothers," I said not sure if I wanted to tell someone I just met my life story.
"I'd like to hear the story," he said but before I could sigh he said, "someday."
"Someday," I agreed and continued to spot my new friend.
