Chapter Six: Blood Medicine
"They're not real! They're not real!" Jesse whimpered. She was on her knees bent forward, face-planted in the floor of the trophy room. Mhrende kept running from her to the doorway calling for Naranarti. On the second run, he was pushed aside by the upset Yautja. Naranarti slid to Jesse and took her into his arms. He held her to his chest and listened to what she was saying. She was crying the same things over again. "They're not real! Tell me they're not real! They can't be real!" Mhrende slowly approached. "[I thought she was behind me,]" he explained. "[I didn't even pay attention-- the door was open, and she went in...]" Mhrende looked behind him towards the door. "[I didn't think about these being in here until she screamed.]" "[Go keep the others back and close the door behind you,]" Naranarti ordered. He returned his attention to Jesse. He combed his talons through her hair and massaged her back between her shoulder-blades. It was all he could think to do, ensure her that she was safe. The trophy room was right before the rec-room where they had been heading. It was a room with six walls. All of the walls were riddled with pikes, most occupied by a skull or fully preserved head or other bodypart. What had originally received Jesse's attention was the wall directly in front of the door. Human skulls were fixed to the wall almost on top of one another like masonry. Some of them had human weapons or were setting on them instead of a pike. Jesse had ran her fingers over a few of them, lines in the dust indicating her movements. It was the wall to the left of the door that had given her the shock. When she'd turned around, she faced the void of black heads that had been so familiar to her by only a dream. Panic had swallowed her at that point putting her where she was now. "I do not know how," Naranarti said, "You knew of them, but they are real, Jess'si'deinz. Like Oomans, we hunted them. I had hoped to slowly introduce them to you... but, you are already familiar with them... Jess'si?" He tilted her chin up to face him. She face and eyes were red and wet, but she had stopped crying. "Those are trophies-- they're dead. You have nothing to fear... of those." He had to admit to himself that if she were to run into a live Amendha Kainde, she may have plenty to fear. He would eventually teach her otherwise. The vibrations from his chest calmed her as he spoke. Jesse attempted to regain her senses. Those things were just trophies of her...boyfriend's? Was that the right word? I'll figure it out later, she pushed the thought to the side. The Nightmares on the wall were otherworldly beings, aliens that she would have to familiarize herself. Why or how she dreamt of them, like Nara, she knew not. She needed to look at this in a scientific perspective, no matter how terrified she was of the things. Where her dreams had a strange haze to them, as all dreams do, evidence of the real thing was now in front of her, a solid object she could analyze and understand. Jesse pulled away from Nara to regain her composure. "I'm sorry," she said standing up. He stood up with her, head cocked to the side in either confusion or curiosity. "I let myself get so startled... I wasn't expecting to see them, I guess." Naranarti closed the space between them and bowed his forehead to rest on hers. She placed her hands on either side of his pectorals and kissed the outside of his closed mandibles making him purr. A strange noise came from her that made him back up with a light hiss. Jesse laughed. "That was my stomach trying to eat itself. Where is this food that I was hearing about?" ***** Naranarti and Denarde sat quietly in the cockpit staring at the same screen. It was on a waiting-period for live communication. Mhrende and Yekita were in the rec room working off the meal they'd eaten. Jesse had been given free roam of the ship except any door she couldn't open-- Naranarti didn't want her to get hurt in the shuttle bay or the engine rooms and her curiosity could do mass damage to the computer systems. Denarde had requested she not be in the medical bay unless he were there or if she needed medical attention. He guess she was in either of three places: the rec room watching Yekita make an ass of himself, his quarters resting or messing with his things, or the trophy room facing her new demons. The screen changed and awoke the two from their private thoughts. Another Yautja was on the screen, his face and build much thinner and trim than the other two. His skin was stark white without a single spot, stripe or blemish. His hair was almost as white, and it had not been dreaded, its length that of Naranarti's. His brow was low making his eyesockets deep. He wore a permanent glare not much different from Nanaiyude's, but Paya help you if you pointed out the similarity. His eyes were a bright, phosphoric green. Any being in the Universe would feel sudden dread by a mere look into this male's eyes, and they would be right to fear him. Even Naranarti was unsettled at times. This time, though, his eyes were dilated and didn't have the same effect. Denarde trilled, "How intoxicated are you, Seddar?" Seddar's head lolled to the side. "You interrupted me," he replied. His voice was sharp but jagged. "I have a hundreds of messages from you, Naranarti, all urgent, all within a few hours of one another. Who is this Jess'si'deinz you have been worry over so?" "The Ooman female, dumbass," Naranarti hissed. "You had to get high before speaking with me?" He was annoyed at him, needless to say. Seddar may have had legitimate reasons to start on substance-abuse, but as of late he had become addicted beyond reason. "What is it this time? Your brother told me it was 'Ikthya'de'." "No! That shit keeps me awake," Seddar insisted. "'Vayu'guan' works." He ignored Denarde swearing in the background. "So, you finally picked up your little Ooman female. I hope that works out for you. Was there something specific you needed-- I don't remember all your messages?" Naranarti looked at Denarde. "Something had been done to heal her wounds earlier that I wanted to inquire on." "Blood transfusion!" Seddar slapped the console infront of him and trilled. "I can't believe I had forgotten that. Yes... Don't do that again, Naranarti. Too much could kill her." "What about the Ooman that shares our longevity?" Denarde spoke up. "The one that in turn hunts us?" Seddar stared blankly at the screen. Naranarti and Denarde waited patiently as they knew this was just what Seddar did when he was thinking. "Zubo'tai," he broke the silence. "Ooman Warrior of long ago who hunted, killed, and devoured a Warrior Elite. There is another too, but no one worries about him-- he knew not what he'd done and does not seek us out. Zubo'tai has killed many of you hunters and will continue until he is eradicated... Or until you morons figure out that if you just stay away from their planet he will eventually die. But it may be too late for that. I hear rumor that the Oomans have had success with deep-space travel, intergalactic even." He trilled. "We're fucked, now." "I didn't need the history lesson," Naranarti hissed. He tried to suppress it, but it was difficult controlling involuntary reactions. "I need to know about this longevity. Denarde says it is our blood that does it. Is this true? How would one use it?" Seddar leaned back and nodded. "I see. You want to know of the forbidden arts. Didn't think you had it in you, Naranarti. Blood Medicine is a gray practice riddled with loop-holes and traps. If done in the right mind-set, not only can you keep your mate, but you can keep in-good with Paya." He hissed in skepticism, "You and your morals." "Because what would Cetanu le'Aseigan do with morals," Naranarti replied with mockery. It wasn't an insult to be called a "Servant of Death" to Seddar. It was what he did, it was what he lived for, thrived for. "Naranarti, because you're my friend," Seddar started in a more serious tone. "I am going to ask you something before I tell you anything about Blood Medicine. You must trust this female with your life. You will be giving her these secrets. Oomans are...metaphorical cannibals. They make prey of their own kind. If she were to return to her world with these secrets, she would be at their mercy...and they won't have any. Ooman parliaments want our secrets, and they will scavenge them where they can find them. Zubo'tai is fearsome and eludes his people. The other submits to observations. With your female, they could fillet her on a table to finish their work. If she leaves you, it is your duty as an Arbitrator--" Naranarti stood up and paced the room as Seddar spoke. He knew where this was going. "Naranarti! You will have to kill her!" Seddar threw his hands on his console and leaned into the camera to drive the concept home. If he were there, he'd have slammed him into the wall. "Can you commit to that?!" Naranarti turned to the screen. "I trust her. It would never come to that." "But if you had to, on the health of your soul, could you eliminate her?" "Yes." And for the first time in his life, he outright lied. ***** As Naranarti suspected, Jesse was in the trophy room. She had a book in her arms and was sketching the Amendha Kainde trophies. She looked up at him, smiled and continued her drawing. Naranarti quietly approached and looked over her shoulder. He studied how she held the pen in the same manner he or any other Yautja would. Her accuracy was incredible. He knew she drew, observing her while she was in the academic institute, before the fateful hunt, but he never could get the angle to see her drawing. Each page was of a trophy. To the side, she had drawn the entire being as she had seen it in her dream. To his astonishment, those smaller sketches held a great semblance to the real thing. Only three of the Amendha Kainde did she have in her dream, Drones, a Queen, and, surprisingly, a Praetorian. "You dreamed of this one?" he asked pointing to the guard-alien. Jesse smiled. She liked his voice when he spoke French, cool and swift. "This was like the first I saw. The head looked smoother, but it may have been the dream making it's own concept. As far as the head's shape though, it definitely looked like that one," she replied in French, pointing at the Praetorian head on the wall. "The body is exactly like the Praetorian Amendha Kainde, the Queen's guard." The Praetorian was shaped like a Warrior, but its back had a tall fin down the spine and a thick tail like a Spinosaurus. "This was the one mating your friend? That's interesting..." "Oh? How so?" "The Praetorian mate the Queen." "Huh." Jesse approached the Queen's skull. "So it goes without saying this behemoth was a Queen. What are the others?" Naranarti pointed to each and named them. The black, shiny, sleek skulls belonged to Drones. They were the front-lines of attack, workers for the Queen, pawns, disposable. The larger, rough-textured skulls were of the Warriors; like Yautja they were the hunters of prey and hosts. They also protected the interior of the Hives. The smooth, brown skulls came from Runners, the same as Drones but were quadrupedal, born from beings that did not have the ability to stand up-right. Praetorian skulls were smooth but had divisions like large scales. There was one he told her about which he did not have a trophy for there-- it was back in his suite at home. A Rogue was a Warrior or Praetorian that had changed its chromosomes in order to become a temporary Queen in the instance there was none. It would lay one egg to start a new Queen. Generally, after the true Queen's birth, the Drones and Warriors would be forced to kill the faux-Queen. In rare instances, it escaped. Its chromosomes would eventually return to male, but its physique would remain similar. Still the same size and strength as a Queen, it was an admirable foe with enough deadly aggression to match three Queens. "Why not call it a King?" Jesse asked, closing her book. She leaned against an empty space between a pelt and an insectoid skull. "I imagine if it got along with the Queen, we would," Naranarti said. "They are sterile, and the Queen has no use for them, not when they don't obey her." "You say 'obey'," she asked pointing to the Queen. "Are they sentient?" Naranarti thought for a long moment. It was a hard question to answer. "They are highly intelligent, but are not capable of speech, if that is what you mean. They cannot create technology, but they can learn to manipulate it. They can open doors, press buttons-- I've seen them start shuttle engines and get the damn things off the ground... then crash, but still. They communicate through a strong pheromone the Queen releases." "Eusocial. Like ants." She stared at the Queen a bit longer before turning back to Naranarti. "Some of the smallest beings on Earth can kill a human in less then thirty seconds. A swarm of Driver Ants can devour a human in ten minutes. A single box jellyfish the size of my fingernail could send me into immediate cardiac arrest. These things we can't see coming. That," she pointed at the Queen again, "doesn't seem so scary when I think about it that way." "Good. I don't want you to be afraid..." Naranarti said. "We keep a live Queen on our ship. We breed her for the hunt." He explained the physiology. While he spoke, Jesse opened her book and started writing. He wasn't sure if he was getting him word-for-word, but she didn't ask him to repeat himself. When he was finished explaining the life cycle of the Amendha Kainde, he changed the subject. "I came to speak with you on a different matter." Jesse nodded. "I know. The 'secret' Denarde was talking about," she approached him, dropping her book onto the ground, and took his arm. "So what's the verdict, Mister Arbitrator?" Naranarti tilted his head unsure of how to approach the subject now that they were on it. But like she had read his mind, she told him it was easiest if he was direct with her, reminding him that she was a scientist and could handle whatever it was. He sighed low almost like a growl, but the sound was much different. "Denarde had performed a minor blood transfusion on Yari'mso. It was able to confuse her body long enough for her to become pregnant." "So...I need a blood transfusion?" "No! No, that would kill you," he said shaking his hands in the air. "Oh, well, yeah, no, let's not do that." "I'm sorry, I am not being direct, am I?" "I'm betting this has to do with blood," Jesse surmised. "Yeah...consumption of it will prolong your life," he told her. "Rina told ma about two humans who'd done that, how it did actually prolong their lives. The crazy cajun and the Samurai warrior." "Zubotia?!" He was shocked she knew of him. "'Zubotai'? You mean Subotai? Chigusa Subotai-- owner of Chigusa Corp?" Jesse looked off to the side. "I knew something was weird about him... I had seen him on TV and again at the government facility they'd kept me at for questioning...he eyes. You can look into his eyes and see something inhuman, something that is... you, your people. Of course, there was something very malicious there, like Ulij." "When we go to your world, he hunts and eats us. Doing that has a completely different effect on the Ooman body," he said. "But only blood is not so...extreme." "Oh, good," she said laughing in mild relief. "So it's not like I'm going to go full-on cannibal on someone. Though, the vampirism is not completely settling. I mean, what's the real age difference here? How much older are you than when we last met?" "Only a few seasons. I have not aged at all, really. You have, though, by much." "Thanks for noticing." Naranarti blushed. "I mean, when I have not aged at all, you have seen four years." She nodded. "If I don't do this, it'll only seem like a temporary fling for you. That's really sad when I think about it. It will be a lifetime for me, but even in that time expanse, for someone who took many lovers and didn't give them an extra thought, you would get bored of me anyways. Tell me I'm wrong." Naranarti leaned his head down and nuzzled her forehead. "You are wrong. You make me feel emotions rare to us. I am being selfish when I request this of you. I am not so heartless that I would force you, though. But if I lost you so soon, I don't know what would happen to me." "If it means that much to you," Jesse kissed his forehead and traced a hand down his scars making him purr. "Then I'll do it." She pulled back to look at him better. "But Rina had said there were side effects. What do you think they would be?" "He mentioned a few things, but nothing ill-natured. There's a list to know if it's working: you can handle our diet, you can breathe our air, and what I know you were concerned about, you can breed with me. There are other things, but they would not be seen until much later." "Slowly, I would turn into one of you?" "It's not that drastic." She laughed and grabbed his arm playfully. "Not that I wouldn't mind! So who's the victim? Who am I drinkin' from?!" Naranarti tilted his head, astonished at what she had said. If someone told his that he would slowly metamorph into an Ooman, he would have been horrified. "Well, it would be me. My blood." "Of course," Jesse said with an awkward smile and a roll of her eyes. "So, how much am I gonna be drinking then?" "Not much," he shook his head. He held his hands out, one above the other leaving a space between them as tall as her head. "The same as you drank earlier, three times a month." Jesse made a gagging noise. "That's a pint--that's three pints! In a month!? How is that not going to make me sick?!" "Well, you can mix it with something... Oh!" He winced. "My month! One of my months! That's almost seventy days for you!" Jesse leaned her head into his chest and groaned and loud sigh. "Fuck! Nara! We need to straighten out our calenders!" She looked up at him again. "But seems like alot. Can you do that? I mean, I know you're bigger and all, but humans can only manage loss of a pint every fifty or so days." "Really? I lose more blood in training. Our blood is expansive, so when outside our bodies, it fills twice its space." "Oh, okay. I was just worried for you." "I will be fine. Especially, when Yari'mso gets the replication technology working. You'll keep your Ooman qualities," he assured her. "Even when you are able to breathe our air, you will still be able to breathe your own." "You have replication technology? That's almost too science fiction for me. But I guess when I run out of Tylenol..." She paused and embraced him again. "You said I would be able to have your children. It's not often I find a man who would do such a thing for me." "It surprises me you've not had a mate before," Naranarti said. "Well, I'm not a virgin. I've had sex before-- the latest a no-care-stress-relief, and before that was just what I had on batteries." She laughed when she saw the confused look on his face. "Nevermind. No, there was one, but he didn't work out. The concept of breeding is scary to humans. At least with everyone I've had to deal with. This is going so fast for me though!" Naranarti cringed his shoulders recalling what Mhrende had said before when arguing with Yekita. Talk of mating could make her nervous, scare her off. "It isn't as though, it will happen the next we have sex. It'll take time, much time, before I can sire you children." "That's fine," she nodded and pulled away. "I need to learn more about your culture anyway. I'm sure I'm going to be a disruption. I sort of already was on your personal ship." "No, Yekita is just stupid." Though he had to admit, things were going to be very different on the Clan ship. There was a chance that her arrival might be met with disapproval even hostility. He could protect her, but he couldn't be around her at all times, not with his duties. In fact, upon his arrival home, he would start a new investigation. Mhrende he could ask to protect her-- he would-- but he would have to take on the responsibilities Naranarti owed to his students. Yekita...no. Denarde might, but he could be called to work without warning. But maybe his father-- Naranarti looked at the wall suddenly. His intense stare caught Jesse's attention. "What's wrong, Nara?" He growled as he approached the wall. With a strong punch, he slammed his fist into the wall. Several loud yelps and squeals were heard on the other side as the hard vibration startled the eves-droppers. "[We've been had!!]" Mhrende could be heard squeaking from the other side of the wall where the rec room was. "This is why I started in French," Naranarti said. "The wall here is thin, and my students are nosy." Jesse laughed hysterically. "Aw~ Let's hope they won't learn it." "Jesse," he spoke seriously. "What we do, my people, our existence, is held in great secrecy. If there is any disruption, it will be from fear-- fear that would return to your people with these secrets. I know you would never speak of it. You didn't before, and at any rate, you have ne intention of returning. But this Blood Medicine, the practice, is forbidden. My Clan has a habit of ignoring what isn't obvious to them. If they don't know what we're doing exactly, even with your increased longevity, they won't care." "Don't ask, don't tell," she reiterated. "Basically," he nodded. "You can say nothing of this. Only myself, Denarde, and possibly Yari'mso will know of this. Mhrende will know better than to question us. Yekita, though, again is stupid. Others, would normally never dare. If I claim you as my property, they should leave you be. This will mean you only answer to me ans no one else. If they ask you questions, you have the right to not answer. I outrank the entire population of our ship, even our Matron. If they won't leave you alone, you speak to me about it." Jesse's eyes narrowed and her face seemed to brace in annoyance. "I don't know about this whole 'I'm your property' thing... I was raised to be an independent woman, to demand equality. Not to be someone's property, love or not." "Equality?" "Yes. Granted it's still an ideal to strive for, but men and women should be given equal consideration even with out differences. I should be able to take part in a dominantly-male prospects, and the same goes for men." Naranarti's eyes seemed to soften, and he peered off whimsically. "That's sounds so nice... I know Denarde would love a world like that. He spends his life studying and researching in secrecy because it is forbidden for males to delve into all scientific studies." "You're a Matriarch society? I would have never guessed." Naranarti shook his thoughts back on track. "Jess'si, I would never mistreat you! It is only something I would tell others-- not act on! At the very least, I am your property. I would do anything you ask of me, anything to please you." "I don't want to own you or suppress anything about you!" She leapt up and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you, Nara. People in love don't do that to one another. I love you for your strength of will. I would rather we have disagreements than for you to falter to me in misery." Naranarti started to purr when a scent invaded the area and disturbed him. He looked up and saw Denarde enter from the hall. Denarde cocked his head to the side and smirked. "[I hate to interrupt you,]" he said, "[But I think if we're going to do this, it may be best to collect the first set on the ship and not at home.]" *****It's not everything I wanted to post, but re-story-boarding is difficult. I'm used to working on a team of writers so again, if you see any errors or discrepancies give me a shout. I know everyone is going "WHERE'S THE SEX, YO!?!" but, sorry guys, I like story with my erotica. PWP is too boring to me (to write, that is). That doesn't mean that I'm not going to deliver what I promised from the description, so don't fret! Most of it is actually imperative to the plot-line (YAY). Shit will pick up after chapter ten, mainly because 7-9 are going to be long, though not boring (teaser: Jesse's going to throw the ship off its cycle and kick off another mating season--oh, the girls are gonna be so pissed.)
I'm going to withhold chapter seven (what comes up as 8 on the selection bar) until I finish up the relation-building between Jesse and a few other characters. Good news, though, it'll have a good amount of sex in those segments to reward your wait. Thank you for reading, and I hope to get this updated as soon as possible! ****EDIT::: 7 Feb. 2012 No, I'm not dead. No, I haven't forgotten the story. Yes, I am very sorry for making promises that I couldn't keep. Yes, I am appreciative of my readers. ...I had a lot of shit thrown at me this past year, and I'm really sorry that I went on a hiatus without even saying "Hey, I'm on Hiatus." Now that I've gotten my shit together, I have been revamping the story-line, and luckily I don't even have to change the currently published chapters YAY!! Down side of getting my shit together though is that my business is in the "on" season and I'm booked up till at least the end of May. Thus my time off is limited because stupidly, I over-booked myself to make up damages. Though my time is limited, I am going to be working on my story as often as possible. However to keep from getting hopes up, I say this: I will get the next chapter up as soon as possible. Thank you for reading, and thank you for understanding. And I mean that sincerely. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
