Chapter Seven - Payment
It was dark and he was alone, time seemed to have slipped away from him, his
senses muddled and dreams had swirled around him, as if he had taken too much
of that sweet black smoke but he could hear the night birds, the waves washing
against the sand. This was no Singaporean opium den. He could not hear her
breathing, he thought that he would, that she would be there watching over him.
She? Who was she? a face came
to mind…ah yes…her but where was she? He raised his head, he felt so weak and
he could not understand why, but he persisted, levering with one shaking hand
he peered into he darkness for several moments before he made her out, she was
sitting on the sand, looking out to sea, cross legged with her back to him but
she had turned almost as soon as he had realized where she was, quietly getting
to her feet to come and kneel next to him. He shut his eyes, she had power, he
remembered now. One hand touched his cheek, then stroked his forehead, he kept
his eyes shut, tightly squeezed and he heard the smile in her voice as she
spoke.
“sleep and heal Jack, go back to your happy dreams.”
And he did, smoothly drifting back to the days of his childhood while his body
continued the task of repairing and restoring.
*
It had been four days, and the herbs were almost gone. Anna Maria had taken her
healer’s tools from her cabin and while they would not have helped to save Jack
from his injuries they had kept him sleeping, the colour
was beginning to come back to his cheeks and Maia
knew that very soon she would need to wake him. He would need to be strong,
able to step back onto his ship and take command. His crew no matter how loyal
they appeared, were pirates and they would not long
serve a Captain that they considered to be weak, he had to appear invincible,
sleep would have done its work, soon it would be time for his mind to once more
take control of his body. But there were things that needed to be done first.
He had been surviving on fruit mashed with water, but he would need more
substantial fare now. There were pigs roaming on the beach, a legacy of the
buccaneers that would have once sold the meat to the sailing ships, before they
had taken to the sea themselves that was. But it was certainly for the best
that they were here, Jack needed to have meat to
restore the blood that he had lost.
She had taken the pistol from his belt, quietly talking to him all the while,
she had done that often these last few days, unsure if he heard her but telling
him to rest peacefully that she would be back soon.
It had not been pleasant but she had done what was required, the pig had
roasted most of the day and was almost done when she knelt to gently shake his
shoulder.
”Jack it is time to wake.”
“eh” he sounded confused “Bella leave me be luv…tired.”
“No Jack it’s not Bella” she wondered who Bella was, there had been affection
in his voice when he had spoken the name “it’s Maia
and it is time for you to wake.”
She had felt him tense under her hand, and she sighed “sorry Jack, but it is
time.”
He did not open his eyes for a long time, but just lay perfectly still “Must
have had too much rum….been having bad dreams….bugger” his eyes shot open “it
wasn’t a dream was it?”
“No Jack it wasn’t” she patted his arm “don’t think about it too much.”
“bloody hard not too” his voice was a low grumble but
she could see him sniffing even as he raised his head “is that roast pork I
smell?”
“aye Jack.”
“real pork? Not….well you know…”
She wondered exactly what he meant by that, if he thought that she had somehow
created a pig out of a handful of sand, but she let it go instead leaning to
help him sit up.
His only complaint had been that there was no rum, apparently according to him
it strengthened the blood just as much if not more so than red meat. But he had
not waited for her to suggest that he get try to get up, he had no sooner wiped
his mouth than he was pushing himself up from the stretcher. She had to run to
catch him as he pitched sideways, falling into the sand, pulling her down with
him. They rested almost nose to nose and she was conscious of the shock in his eyes
before he closed them briefly, a long deep breath and he looked at her again.
“It will pass Jack.” She found her self reassuring him, not wanting to see the
self doubt in his eyes again, it unsettled her to see
him at a loss.
“of course luv” the sparkle was back and she could
see him tensing to try again, she rolled away from, getting to her feet
offering him her hand, he grinned a smile that did not quite have the same
cocky smirk to it as before but it was still a smile and then reached up, grunting
as he clambered to his feet swaying slightly but shaking his head in a no when
she moved to steady him.
“let me walk” his teeth were clenched and there were beads of sweat rolling
down his face, but slowly one step at a time he walked. Down the beach, down to
where the waves rolled across the white sand, and only then did he sit, legs
drawn up to his chest, eyes searching the fog.
“she is out there Jack and they will be back in three
more days.”
He nodded curtly and turned to face her “so what is the price that I must pay?”
“the price?” she did not understand what he meant,
stooping to sit beside him, watching his face.
“the value of my life” his voice was harsh and he was
fidgeting with his pistol, pulling it from his belt to examine it, frowning as
he counted the shot that remained.
“I used it, to shoot the pig”
“right, you shoot well” he looked at her again “So what do I owe?”
“Nothing” she felt ill that he would think that she would want reward for being
a channel for anothers power “it was not me Jack, it
was something else, another that needs you alive, they just used my hands.”
“I have to settle the debt”
“there is no debt”
”Please” his voice was almost pleading and she thought that she understood, he
did not want to be beholden to another.
She felt sad, that he could not see that she would have done the same for any man, any person if only she had the power to call her own
that had enabled her.
“I will take that in payment” she pointed at a single amber bead that hung at
the end of one lopsided braid.
“This” he lifted it, staring at her, looking slightly insulted “is that all my
life is worth, one slightly imperfect amber bead.”
She nodded resisting the urge to roll her eyes, bloody Jack Sparrow, he had
been concerned that she would ask for too much and he was offended when he felt
she had asked for too little.
His eyes were measuring as he tugged the bead loose, picking up her hand to
place the amber in her palm, gently closing her
fingers around it.
“Thank you Maia, Star of the Sea”
She nodded, conscious of how his hand felt over hers,
the pressure on her fingers before he let it drop. In silence they sat watching
the waves, looking out into the mist.
