Chapter 6 – Open Threats
Oria slowly eased herself away from Jack, he was more than a bit drunk and had forgotten about her in the flurry of his story-telling and the awed audience that had gathered. She slipped away easily and crept into the crowds, spotting the man she knew was in charge of repairing the Pearl she slipped a few of the buttons on her shirt loose. Checking her pistols and cutlass were in place she felt for the purse of money she kept and glanced inside, there was enough to do what she intended to do. Fixing a smile on her face she slipped into the seat next to him and posed.
He turned with a lusty grin and looked her up and down before his eyes rested on the open shirt with a wide leer. He turned his full attention to her, “Hello pet. You looking for someone?”
“I’ve just found him.” His grin widened as his eyes slowly travelled up to meet hers.
“Really. Isn’t that convenient for both of us then.” Oria smiled and felt for the money purse.
“You’re the one fixing up the Pearl aren’t you?” He nodded dumbly, his gaze slipping occasionally with the alcohol, “I’ll pay you well to delay her launch by a couple of days.” The man shook his head, his eyes clearing slightly when he realised she was here for serious business.
“I was paid well by the Captain himself not to delay with her repairs at any cost. I’m not going against Captain Sparrow, you not heard the stories?” Oria pouted slightly.
“I’ll double whatever he’s paying you.” She held out the coin purse and the shipbuilder weighed it curiously in his hand, his eyes widened slightly at the amount.
“You could buy a new ship with this!” Oria nodded with a smile.
“Do we have an agreement?” The man handed it back with a reluctant smile.
“Sorry love but no. I’m not going against him for any amount of money.” Oria’s look quickly changed into one of devilish proportions.
“It is not Jack Sparrow you need to be worrying about… ‘mate’. If I find that ship nearly ready to sail in the next day I’ll hunt you down and make the decision about continuing to work for you.” She lifted her jacket aside slightly to reveal the arsenal of pistols and daggers, “Don’t think I won’t follow through with my threats… ‘friend’.” She grasped his right wrist tightly, the man’s eyes widened as a hot burning sensation rose up his arm.
She released him and he looked down at the skin, a black tattoo, a dragon coiled about a pentagon rested there. He stared at her terrified, “There are things in this world far more terrible than you can imagine. I suggest you do what I say mate. You will not like the consequences.” She stood up smoothly before pausing with a mock thoughtful expression, “Oh and just so you know, no one else can see that mark, just you and me. They won’t believe you, so you’ll be thrown off the job if you start ranting. Crazy old fool, they’ll say. Which means that either way I win because until that mark fades in three days time I’m going to know exactly where you are.” She turned sharply and stalked back across the room to sit back down next to Jack. He draped an arm around her shoulder lazily and leaned on her as he continued the story completely oblivious to anything that had just happened.
:/
Oria stumbled again as Jack tripped over another drunkard’s foot and cursed at him belligerently over his shoulder. Oria shook her head in amusement and continued to lead him back to the Pearl, he had refused to remove his arm from her shoulder making the journey into more of a pilgrimage with his drunken swaying knocking her balance off continuously.
Finally they made it up the boarding plank of the Pearl and Oria dropped Jack onto the bed with a grateful sigh. He chuckled and looked up at her from his back as she tugged his boots off, “Could get used to you doing this.” He slurred heavily with a smirk.
“Aye perhaps but you’re not going to; I’ll be surprised if you even remember who you are in the morning.” Jack grinned and sat up swaying slightly.
“I am Captain Jack Sparrow, the infamous and most handsome.” Oria grinned mockingly.
“See you’ve already forgotten.” He glared down at her condescendingly, she pushed his shoulder gently as she stood up and he fell backwards with a grin.
“Come and lie with me, sleep seems good idea like.” Oria shook her head at his drunken speech and tugged her own boots off before clambering in next to him too weary from the three days sailing to remove any other clothing. Jack didn’t seem to mind as he dragged her into a bear hug and drifted swiftly off into a drunken sleep.
Oria watched him carefully from where she was pinned against his chest. He looked so peaceful and quiet, just sleeping. He had no idea what trouble he was going to get himself into with her guidance. Her heart hurt, she knew she was going to hurt him again, but perhaps this time he need never know. Perhaps this time she could keep ten steps ahead of him and keep him in the dark, sure it would be hard work but when was anything easy. She tucked an arm around him and held him close, she knew the day would come when she would have no choice but to betray him. She knew that day was drawing close, she could feel it, her time was coming and then… and then both he and Davy Jones’ would see how blind they had been, how gullible. They would see the dragon had only been dormant and biding its’ time.
