“Let someone watch the kids and take a trip with me,”
Kayla urged as she walked into Stef’na’s quarters.
“You know how to pilot a ship?” Stef’na asked in
amazement. She knew Kayla learned far more than she has and it wouldn’t
surprise her now if Kayla answered yes.
“We are not going that far,” Kayla laughed. She looked at
Stef’na before sighing. “I’ll explain on the way.”
“You have been quieter than usual,” Zi’ren grunted to
Lo’kesh. “What’s wrong? You missing your future mate already?” he started to
laugh at his joke.
“She is not my mate,” Lo’kesh growled. “She’s my friend
Zi’ren.”
“Well you are not excused from your duties as of yet
future leader,” Ekal grunted. Lo’kesh walked into his room and closed the door
so he could think about Su’tara in peace. That night when he returned to his
quarters, her scent was still strong in the air. Out of sheer frustration he
relieved himself as he thought of what he could have done to her in the
elevator. He thought of her even more after that night.
“Why are we going below the ship,” Stef’na growled. “If I
knew this was your plan I would have said no. And without any guards no less.”
“I have my sticks,” Kayla shrugged her shoulders. “Don’t
worry Stef’na I’ll protect you.” They looked at each other and laughed.
“For some reason I believe you.” When the elevator doors
opened some of the eta’s stopped working and looked at both of the females.
Some even bowed, knowing Kayla was the female leader on the ship.
The aroma was pleasant and whatever they were cooking for
the afternoon or evening, it made Kayla’s stomach growl. Kayla walked over to
one of the cooks. “Can you escort me to Lee’na?” Kayla nodded to him.
He nodded in return and they left the kitchen area. It
wasn’t long before they were in a larger area Kayla seen before on her tour
with Ne’el. The laundry and sewing rooms. Kayla recognized Lee’na by Su’tara’s
description. She was indeed beautiful. Lee’na looked up at Kayla in shock. Her
greenish blue eyes look so innocent to Kayla. “Lee’na?” Kayla questioned.
“Yes, I am Lee’na,” She stood up and nodded politely to
Kayla then Stef’na.
“My daughter said you were beautiful,” Kayla smiled. “Tell
me why you are still down here and then tell me about Lo’kesh, please.” They
all sat down as Lee’na spoke to her and Stef’na about herself, Lo’kesh and the
conditions of the eta’s.
“I don’t understand it,” Stef’na said with a sigh. “This
is a new ship. How could Ne’el let it go so quickly?” The three females walked
to Lo’kesh’s quarters.
“Like I said Kayla, he is a good boy,” Lee’na nodded.
“Thank you for talking to me.”
“I will see you again soon Lee’na,” Kayla shook her
shoulder softly.
When she left Stef’na buzzed the com several times. When
it opened Zi’ren looked at both of the females and growled. He then focused his
attention towards Kayla. “What do you want ooman?”
Kayla swiftly punched him in his throat before taking out
her sticks and bashing him on the head. Years ago if a Yautja would have
greeted her in such a manner she would have ignored it. Sh’lok had to remind
her on numerous occasions that if she wanted respect she would have to show
that she deserved it. Now that they were on a new ship, Kayla felt if an eta
didn’t respect her then who would. Lo’kesh ran out of his room when he heard
the commotion. When he walked in he watched as Su’tara’s mother grabbed a hand
full of Zi’ren’s locks and banged his head on the floor before flipping him
over to look at her.
“Don’t you ever disrespect me,” Kayla growled. Stef’na was
used to seeing Kayla beat on males. She understood that was her friend’s only
way to earn respect. Instead of watching the familiar scene she looked around
her meek surroundings.
“Please forgive my ignorance leader Kayla,” he groveled.
“I did not know it was you.” Stef’na started to laugh.
“Are there any other ooman’s on board?” Kayla frowned as
she grabbed his hair tighter.
“No,” he winced in pain. “My eyes are bad. I can barely
see.”
“Then remember my voice,” Kayla pushed him away before
looking over at Lo’kesh. Su’tara described him just as well as she did Lee’na.
She could see the fire in his eyes when he glanced at her. If he were dressed
in better cloth, Kayla would have thought he was a guard or seasoned hunter.
“You are Lo’kesh?”
“Yes,” he said in a soft tone.
Kayla kicked the disrespectful male on the floor. “Get up
and leave.” He quickly got up and left the quarters. Kayla sat down on one of
the cold non finished metal chairs. Stef’na sat net to her.
“What are your intentions with my daughter?”
Stef’na gasped. “Su’tara is interested in him? An eta?”
“She’s interested in me?” Lo’kesh suddenly looked up. Just
as quickly he put his head back down. “Please forgive my outburst. I have no
interest in your daughter.”
Kayla looked at Stef’na. “Can you help me?” Kayla felt on
her own pulse and Stef’na nodded. She got up and walked over to the young male.
She held his wrist.
“What are your intentions with my daughter?” Kayla
repeated.
“I have no ill intentions with your daughter,” Lo’kesh
continued to look down.
“Please look at me when you talk,” Kayla waited until he
looked at her. “Do you have any interest in my daughter?”
“No.”
“He’s lying,” Stef’na barked.
“Just as a friend,” Lo’kesh stammered.
“He’s lying,” Stef’na chuckled.
“I don’t feel comfortable answering this question,” he
looked back down. “I do not wish to be killed.”
“No one will kill you,” Kayla said softly.
The room was silent for a moment. Kayla stared at him,
waiting for an answer. He slowly looked back at her. Lo’kesh could see why she
would be an elder. She was just as fierce as any female warrior he had ever
seen. She fought like a male but carried herself like a female. He could see
where Su’tara gets her furiousness from.
Lo’kesh stood taller. How could Kayla respect his answer
if he was hunched over? He slowly broadened his shoulders as he stared at her.
“The moment your daughter looked at me. The moment she spoke, I haven’t been
able to stop thinking about her. I care deeply for Su’tara, but I know I could
never be her mate.”
Kayla looked over at Stef’na. She gave Kayla a nod. “Thank
you for being honest with me, finally,” Kayla smiled at him as she stood up to
leave. Stef’na couldn’t wait to get out of the depressed looking environment.
She was already standing outside of the quarters. Kayla stood closer to him.
She shook his shoulder and pushed him down so he was at eye level with her.
Kayla leaned closer to him. “Never say, never,” she said softly. Lo’kesh
trilled softly and Kayla laughed.
By the time she reached her quarters Sh’lok was eating
with Ta’noj. “Oh my goodness,” Kayla dropped her sticks and held her child’s
face. It was covered with bruise marks. His arms looked the same way. “What
happen boy!”
“Ra’tul was sparring with me,” he shrugged as he watched
his mom search for her salve. “It doesn’t hurt.”
“Maybe I should start training you,” Kayla said nervously.
“Mother,” Ta’noj chuckled. “You can’t fight that well, I’m
sure.” Sh’lok laughed at the thought.
Kayla laughed as well. “When does the unblooded training
begin?”
“In another six months,” Ta’noj tilted his head as he
looked at his mother. “I would never pass the test to even be considered to
train. I asked one of the trainers about it and he just laughed. He said I was
still too young to even be considered.” Sh’lok stared at his son for a moment.
It bothered him to hear Ta’noj speak in such a negative fashion.
“You will train day and night,” Sh’lok growled. He stared
at his son. His eyes lit up. They were brown, like Kayla’s, but a much lighter
brown with flecks of white. Whenever he was excited they shined. “At night you
will train with your mother one week and me the next.”
“But Father,” Ta’noj spoke in a hush tone as if someone
else was listening. “The mission...”
“My family comes first,” Sh’lok grunted as he continued to
eat. “Don’t worry my son.”
“Tonight, I will start with your first lesson. Finding
your center.”
“Does that really work,” Sh’lok chuckled.
“I beat you a few times didn’t I?” Kayla smiled. He
growled at her playfully as he continued to eat. He growled again when Kayla
took a piece of meat off his plate. She was the only one who could do that. He
even growled at his kids for trying. There are certain things that he was
territorial over. His food, his weapons and his mate.
Kayla decided to not mention her talk with Lee’na until
Ne’el was gone. Sh’lok finally let Shra’van out of his room, but kept a close
eye on him. Sh’lok made Su’tara serve her full two weeks, but not until he
spoke with Lo’kesh again.
Sh’lok watched him as he vigorously scrubbed the floors
near his quarters. Lo’kesh knew he was being watched and normally it wouldn’t
bother him, but it was Su’tara’s father. “Stand up,” Sh’lok growled at him.
“Is my cleaning not to your liking?” Lo’kesh stammered.
Sh’lok didn’t answer him. He stared at Lo’kesh as he
called for a guard down the hall. Lo’kesh was puzzled. He wants to kill me
since I talked to Kayla, Lo’kesh thought as his pulse started to race. He
wished he never said anything to her, but now it was too late. Sh’lok stared at
the guard whom was glaring at Lo’kesh angrily. Lo’kesh sighed and realized this
guard was about to take his life. Lo’kesh stood up straighter. He refused to
not defend himself. Sh’lok was about to speak but watched in amazement as
Lo’kesh punched the guard before taking his combistick. He extended the stick
with ease, while at the same time kicking the guard onto his knees and placing
the stick at his throat.
“Enough!” Sh’lok barked at him. Lo’kesh was breathing hard
as he stared at Sh’lok. “Why did you attack him?”
“He was about to kill me,” Lo’kesh growled. “If I am to
die because of Su’tara then I will die fighting.”
Sh’lok was indeed impressed with his answer. “I wasn’t
about to kill you boy.” He snatched the stick from him and watched as the guard
angrily got up. “Take Lo’kesh to Ya’sha and have him start his guard training.
Also, inform him that Lo’kesh needs new quarters.”
“But I am not a guard,” Lo’kesh stammered.
“Did you not guard my daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Then you’re a guard,” Sh’lok shook his shoulder. “I’m
relieving you from your eta duties. Maybe as a guard you can prove to me you
have the skills to be a warrior.”
Lo’kesh stood staring dumbfounded as Sh’lok walked into
his quarters. He couldn’t believe what he just heard. He was no longer an eta,
just like that. A million and one thoughts went through his head. He would be
able to eat when he wanted to. How would he break the news to his roommates?
Will he be accepted among the others? The guard snapped him from his thoughts
by pushing him. “When you start to train I will beat you for humiliating me,”
he growled to Lo’kesh. “Now follow me.”
Sh’lok found Kayla in the room reading. He shook his head
before walking over to her and growling playfully near her ear. “I just made
Lo’kesh a guard,” he sat next to her as she looked at him in shock. “He has
great potential Kayla. He’s not meant to be an eta.”
“I know,” she nodded looking back at the tablet. She was
reading all about eta’s.
“How do you know?” Kayla looked at him with a worried look
on her face. “What did you do Kayla?”
“I went down…” she couldn’t complete her sentence. He
angrily roared at her.
“What is wrong with my family?” he said speaking to
himself. “Do I have to confine you to your room as well?”
“Only if you are confined with me,” Kayla tried to joke.
He grunted at her remark before squeezing on her thigh.
“They’re still Yautja’s on this ship that would like to
see you dead,” he said softly. “Please don’t go anywhere like that without me
escorting you. At least until I kill these Yautja’s.”
Kayla nodded. She told him about Lee’na and everything she
told him. He nodded and looked at his tablet as she spoke. “Are you listening
to me?”
Sh’lok started to repeat everything back to her in her
voice word, per word as he continued to look at his tablet. Kayla pushed him
softly as he trilled at her.
“I need to confer with Ba’naj and the others before I move
all the eta’s,” he sat his tablet down and scooted closer to Kayla. “There is
an unused portion of the ship that has far better amenities. They can live
there while the other part will continue to be used for those whom are eta’s
for punishment.” He gently clawed her arm and neck before going down to her
breast. Kayla thought of Lee’na again. She will not even be allowed onto the
better part of the ship.
“I’m not done talking,” Kayla bit her lip as his light
touch sent tingles throughout her body.
“You talk too much,” Sh’lok teased. “You still can’t
pronounce some of your words correctly, but I like it.”
“The only way Lee’na can become a breeder again is if
someone takes her as a mate,” Kayla sighed.
“Well that will never happen,” Sh’lok chuckled as he
removed Kayla’s dress from her shoulders. He groaned at the site of her
nipples. “No warrior would be caught dead with an eta. Ne’el sealed her fate.”
Kayla cringed at his words. She knew Lee’na didn’t deserve
to be punished after all those years. Kayla truly believed her as they talked.
She thought long and hard about what she was about to say to Sh’lok. She knew
if he were to get angry with her he would get over it. She moaned as his tongue
wrapped around her nipple. “Sh’lok…”
“Mmm,” he answered.
“Make Lee’na your second mate,” Kayla blurted.
Sh’lok looked at Kayla like she went mad. “What? You can’t
be serious.”
“I don’t want to share you…”
“Then please Kayla, do not ask me to do such a thing,” he
covered her back up as he continued to talk. “I would never feel… comfortable
sharing myself the way I share myself to you.” Kayla knew he was talking about
his emotions.
“She’s different Sh’lok,” Kayla pleaded. “Just talk to
her. See if you like her…”
“No!” he growled angrily as he stood up. “You sit here in
my bed and insult me? You ask me to take another mate as if my feelings are
that shallow. After all these years I thought you knew. I don’t mate with you
to breed. I mate with you because I love you.”
Kayla stood up and reached for him but he stepped away.
“Sh’lok,” she said softly.
“Kayla, I don’t know her. I had never seen her and I don’t
wish to mate with anyone else.” Sh’lok was furious at Kayla for even suggesting
such a thing. “Let me give you a scenario Kayla. I mate with Lee’na. I do
things with her that you have only seen me do with you. How would you react?”
“Jealous maybe,” Kayla said softly. “Just in the
beginning. I will get over it.”
“How many times have you spoken with her?”
Kayla wasn’t about to tell him she visited Lee’na on
several occasions. It was too late. He read her expression and sensed her pulse
race. “Please don’t be angry…”
“You went down there more than once?” He yelled at her.
Sh’lok couldn’t take anymore. He picked up his tablet and left.
Sh’lok was furious and the only thing he could think of
was to go below the ship and to find this… Lee’na. He wanted to tell her to
stop talking to his family. He didn’t need the pressure of his mate suggesting
another mate. He looked down at his tablet again, noting she worked in the
laundry area. “Who is Lee’na?” he growled loudly as everyone stopped and
immediately bowed. “Who is Lee’na!”
“I am,” she said softly walking closer to Sh’lok. He
stared at her for a moment and Lee’na did the same. Sh’lok noticed her scent
was just as attractive as she was. She was smaller than other females and she
carried innocence with her. For a moment Sh’lok thought, if I were unmated,
eta or not, I would pursue this female. “How may I be of service to our
leader?” She nodded towards him.
For a moment Sh’lok forgot why he even came to see her. He
then remembered, but the words couldn’t come out. “I need you to make more
clothes for Lo’kesh. He will be training as a guard now.”
“That’s wonderful,” Lee’na trilled in delight. She noticed
how he looked unnerved by her reaction and immediately looked down. “Excuse me
for my outburst.”
Sh’lok didn’t care about her outburst. It was her trill.
It was soft and somewhat sensual. He purred for a moment before nodding at her
and leaving.
Lee’na noticed his purr and how he immediately looked
embarrassed by it. She shrugged at the thought of him actually being interested
in her. Lee’na knew no warrior would ever touch her and she would never allow
an eta to touch her. Not because they were eta, she was one herself. She could
never be with someone whom found this way of life, enjoyable. She questioned
for a moment why he felt obligated to deliver such news to her.
When Shra’van walked into their quarters he noticed his
mother taking food off the serving cart and placing everything on the table.
Kayla turned around and looked at him. They hadn’t seen each other since the
night of Ne’el’s party. Shra’van nodded to her, like she was a stranger in
passing. Kayla didn’t know what to say to him. Instead, she nodded back before
turning around to finish what she was doing.
“Mother,” Shra’van growled. He stood behind her. Kayla
turned around to look up at him. Kayla didn’t say anything. She waited for him
to speak. “My apologies for my foolish behavior. It was uncalled for.”
Kayla noticed his words were as heartfelt as he could
possibly get. To anyone else he would still come across as an angry Yautja. For
Kayla it was her son’s sincerest form of an apology.
“You are my son Shra’van,” she caressed his cheek in her
hand before pulling gently on his locks. “How can I not forgive you?”
Shra’van was uncomfortable with her caring nature. He
stepped back. “I need some of your ooman salve,” he grunted. He removed his
hand from his side to show her his bruise. Kayla went to the drawer to retrieve
it. She was about to administer it to his skin but he took the jar from her. “I
can do it.”
“Shra’van,” Kayla was hesitant about her question. “Was
Su’tara correct when she said you have mated?”
“So whenever Su’tara speak she’s telling the truth?” he
growled in annoyance.
“Just answer the question.”
He was silent for a moment as he administered the cream to
his bruise. “Yes I have.”
Kayla tried to remain calm, but Shra’van knew otherwise.
“A lot?”
“Does it matter?” he barked at her.
“Do you have questions?”
“Don’t worry Mother, I have witnessed a few rituals and
Kul’vir had already given me the mating talk,” he grunted walking away.
“Kul’vir,” Kayla hissed in a low tone.
