    River Rapids

    Book 2

    Chapter 7

Ro hung up the phone, a broad smile across his lips. “Good news?” Ralph asked, closing another box of the supplies they’d picked up.

Ro just beamed. “Oh yes,” he replied, and admired a bright green animal print blanket, before folding it.

    “Well?”

    “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d be interested.”

“Well, come on. You look like you just got lucky!”

Ro chuckled, while Ralph explained the term to Ver’On, who also laughed. “That was the agent who’s been after me to sell this place. My property, which is much larger than this squared off yard, is right on the edge of some golf resort development kind of thing. They can’t put it anywhere else because of the distance between the road edge and the mountains. I told them about the soil problem, the agent says it doesn’t matter, it was all coming out anyway. So as long as I accept the offer, the agent can have the sale completed by the end of the week.”

    “Well that is good news!”

“Oh that’s not what I’m grinning about.”

    “Oh?”

“It seems the agent had a suspicion as to what happened here. The same as mine, but we can’t prove it. So, he’s going to make a suggestion to the owners, about a certain local sheriff being DROPPED from Security Chief consideration.” Ralph and Ro just laughed, with a perplexed pair of hunters looking on. “Don’t let Bastian know just yet. I want to make it a TOTAL surprise.”

Three days later, Ro and Ralph piled the last of their meager belongings into the large van, talking back and forth about their trip, though not really letting on to either one where they were going, nor their means of travel, in case Bastian was listening somewhere. Ver’On and Tan’ock were cloaked, moving about the yard, waiting for the three Oomans to finish packing.
“So you’re sure you want this female?” Ver’On asked, watching Tan’ock, as he watched the female intently, as she made sure the boxes in the vehicle didn’t fall out.

    “Yes.”

“What makes you believe she is worthy?”

“She is granddaughter to your El’s guardian, the last in his line. He will not leave with family still here. To bind her to me would be an honor, and tie my family to yours forever, which would be a further honor; killer of two queens.”

Ver’On trilled at his compliment. “She intends to bind herself to another.”

“Intentions are like the winds, they always change.”

“Are you sure you can sway her heart?”

“It already swings. I have kept a distance from her, allowing her to think. I’d learned from Zana that if I leave her alone to face the truth about her choice, she will make the decision that is right for her.”

Ver’On nodded. “I see…and the low level purrs have nothing to do with it?”

“They do. My purring reminds her of the choice she must make.” The two chuckled, the noticed movement outside the gate. Ver’On grunted to the Oomans, as the gate opened and the law keeper stepped in, along with another three strange males.
They joined the Oomans near the dwelling, making sure not to move too much, lest the slight distortion of their cloaks give them away. Oomans were far too skittish a creature. Along the way, each hunter moved a set of wires, and small boxes, set just beneath some of the dead foliage. Each box had a small power supply attached to it, and coated it, and the wires, in the same cloaking field. Tan’ock nodded to Ver’On, and they stood to the side to listen to the lies the law keeper would spew this time. Ver’On wanted to kill him, but he’d done nothing to his immediate family to warrant it. Ro and Ralph were guardians to El, not direct parents, thus the rules of family protection did not apply. He would just have to put up with the creature till he did something that he could snuff him out for.

“Mr. Com?” called one male. “Hi. I’m Larry Dodds. I represent the buyers of your property.” His voice trailed off as he noticed the dead garden around him. “I hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time?”

“No, no. We’re just finished. I will miss this place,” Chonie then walked up beside him, “but my granddaughter is right. I cannot stay here anymore. My health is no good, neither is my friend’s, and she’s getting married soon…”

“And having a kid,” Bastian stated, eyeing the shapely woman.

Tan’ock hissed quietly beneath his mask, signaling to Ver’On. Can I kill him now, or wait till the rest are gone?

Ver’On waved him down. The vile law keeper’s death would come, and he would be there to see his end.

“Though I have to say, you certainly don’t look it,” Bastian had continued.

“Keep your eyes off her, Bastian!” Ro snapped. “Why are you here anyway?”

“He’s offered to bare witness to the signatures.”

“No,” Ralph quipped. “I wouldn’t trust him as far as you could throw him.”

Ver’On thought about taking up the challenge, but it was Tan’ock who had to restrain him this time.

    “Then who?”

“My granddaughter. The only interest she has in this deal is that I come to Hawaii to live with her. I only hope Ralph can tolerate the hoola girls. His heart aint what it used to be,” Ro laughed.

“Hey! Since those new herbs you’ve mixed, I feel much better.”

“Still. We are getting older…and I’ve missed too much of Chonie’s life already. I’d like to see her properly, paired off,”

Tan’ock puffed his chest, it was as though the old man was handing the female to him, “and to see my first great grandchild.”

“Sounds great,” Bastian stated. “Maybe I should take a look at Hawaii, see if it’s as beautiful as Miss Chonie is.”

Ro wanted to growl, but found that Chonie had a better idea. “Grandfather, do you have anymore of that mint leaf? I suddenly feel very nauseas, and it’s the only thing that helps.”

“In my coat pocket dear,” he then turned to Bastian. “I highly doubt, Mr. Bastian, that you would be able to afford a trip to Hawaii on a sheriff’s salary.”

“Oh I think I can. I’ll be heading up security for the developer. I should be able to check in on you guys in about six months or so…give or take.” The smile on his face was sly, but smug. He was determined to catch El, slap her in one of his cells, then slap her around before he had his way with her. He’d been dieing to do it, sense he found out her brother was dealing drugs. It was only a matter of time that he’d involve his sister, either as a mule or as a prostituted, or maybe both. One step out of line for her, and he’d be all over her, literally.

“Actually,” called another of the males, seeming to show the same ancestry as Ro Com. “The developer has selected a better qualified individual to handle that. Your services will not be needed.”

    “What?!”

“Sorry Bastain!” Ralph laughed in his face. “Looks like even the security companies don’t want you!”

    “You can’t do this!!”

“Yes, we can, and we have. There are also certain shady activities of yours that border on illegal, and definitely immoral, that the buyers do not want to have associated with any of their staff or facilities. I’m sorry Mr. Bastian, but you did not pass the screening process.”

    “WHAT!!”

“Mr. Bastian,” Ro sighed, recovering from his laughing, “would you leave? I have guests to tend to. This way gentlemen, please.”

“You arrogant little SHITS!! You’ll not get away with this!!!”

“Last words of a desperate man,” Ro laughed, as Bastian seemed to trip over everything on his way out the gate. The little boxes that Ver’on and Tan’ock had repositioned, turned out to be small traps they’d used when they were younglings. Childish to use yes, but they worked to deter, or embarrass someone, especially an arrogant Ooman.

A few hours later, the documents signed, a confirmation call to the bank, and all was finished. Mr. Com was now more than seven hundred thousand dollars richer, but was effectively homeless. Once the men had gone, Chonie turned to her grandfather and said, “You’ll be moving to Hawaii after all!”

Ro took a deep breath. “Yes, and no,” he sighed. “I will go to Hawaii to see you make your choice,” Tan’ock huffed, as though the choice was already made, and the trip was just to close off loose ends, “then, Ver’On, I humbly ask that I be permitted to go with you and Ralph for the rest of my days.”

Safe from outside prying eyes, Ver’On de-cloaked and nodded. “Yes, El family most welcome. Come, store things, we go, not soon enough.”

“Wait a minute. We can’t stay here. You don’t own it. And my flight doesn’t leave for another forty-eight hours. Where are we going to stay? More to the point how do you two get to Hawaii? All the flights are booked, last I’d called.”

Ver’On thumped his hand to his chest. “I take it Ver’On,” Ralph began, “that you will take us?” Ver’On nodded, and pointed to the packed van and car. “Oh, the boxes and cases go with us yes. But the car and van will be staying. I’ve sold the car, and the van is a rental.”

“We just unload and drop off the vehicles. We just need to figure out a meeting place,” Ro commented.

“I’ve got it!” Ralph chimed. “The canyon. We can get the car’s new owner to drive us out, say we’ve a friend coming to get us, then after he’s gone, Ver’On can come with his ship and pick us up. No worries. IF, that’s alright with you, Ver’On?”

Ver’On nodded, as long as he got them, he didn’t care what he had to do.

Then, cloaked, yet tightly sitting in the passenger seat of the van, with Tan’ock perched securely on the roof, he guided Ro to where they could get the vehicle unloaded. Insisting that Ro remain in the cab, he had the young bloods help he and Tan’ock unload the vehicle, it went much faster that way, then sent Ro on his way, saying that they would meet them at the canyon where they sat the night he returned.

“You sure you want to be left here?” the young man asked.

“Of course, we’ll be fine,” Ralph assured. “This is a very special place to us. We’ve a friend coming to pick us up later for our flight. We just want to say good bye.”

“Ok. Hey, thanks for the car man, I really appreciate it.”

“Take good care of it, that’s how you can thank me best.”

    “Yes sir! Bye!”

Ralph watched the little red mustang pull away, and sighed. He’ll miss restoring old cars. He then turned to join Ro and Chonie, already sitting on the bench. Chonie was staring off into the canyon, a look of deep thought reflected in her dual colored eyes. “Will she be alright?” Ralph asked his friend quietly. Ro just nodded yes, and they all looked up as they heard the familiar clicking of a cloaked friend. “I guess its safe,” Ralph said, watching as Ver’On and Tan’ock de-cloak, walking towards them. “Ver’On, Tan’ock; we’re ready when you are.”

Ver’On nodded and turned to the canyon. “Open!” he commanded simply, and what appeared to be a hole in the air in front of them opened up.

“Oh my,” Ro stated, watching the door open in mid air. Chonie grasped his hand, as two more males of Ver’On’s people stood on either side of the door. At once Tan’ock leapt to the opening, the two males pulling him aboard safely. The two then secured safety lines to either of Tan’ock’s hips, and Tan’ock reached towards the Oomans.

Ver’On lifted Ro first, making sure he had the canister of spray, for Ralph was to be next. Tan’ock made sure Ro was well back from the door before extending his hand again to grasp Ralph’s reaching arm. Ralph was secured, though as expected, was breathing harshly, when Tan’ock reached out once more.

Ver’On turned to Chonie, who suddenly shook her head. “I don’t know about his,” she stated. Ver’On didn’t give her time to object further, as he grasped her waist and hoisted her to Tan’ock’s reach. The two young males held tight, as Tan’ock leaned further out, and took hold of Chonie’s upper body. Once he had her, the others, Ro as well, helped pull him back. They then all stepped clear of the door, as Ver'On leapt aboard. He didn’t need any help.

Tan’ock kept Chonie close, as the young bloods removed the clipped lines. His deep purrs resonating through her body, made her legs wobble before she could stand on her own. Ver’On made sure the door was closed, then handed Ralph and Ro a mask and tank. “Breathe no good, inside,” he said, and turned the dials on the tanks, as Tan’ock secured a mask over Chonie’s face, still holding her body close to his.

Once the group was ready, the young bloods cycled the air in the compartment, and the inner doors opened. Ver’On left Tan’ock and Chonie alone, Ro and Ralph already knew what a Yautja looked like, but Chonie didn’t. The inner door closed, Tan’ock finally, though reluctantly, let her body go.

“You’re going to take off your mask, right?” she asked.

Tan’ock nodded. “Truth of face, me, no ooman’s.” he said, and gently pulled the pressure tubes from the side. Chonie held her breath as the mask lowered over his deep ridged brow to reveal his amber eyes. But he stopped there, waiting for her to say she wanted to know.

She looked at the questioning amber gaze from over the mask. His eyes looked nearly human, if they were only a different color and on a human. If his eyes looked like this, the rest couldn’t be that bad. She nodded for him to continue, and the mask came completely away.

Tan’ock just stood there, Chonie’s eyes were wide, but with the mask on her, he couldn’t tell if it was due to wonder, shock, or fear. At once he purred to her, sense it had his desired affect on her, and stepped a bit closer, his outer tusks twitching with anticipation.

Chonie just continued to stare at him. His face was unlike anything she’d ever had nightmares about. But as he stepped closer to her, she found a softness in his features, and what she could almost guess as a deep sadness, reflected from his eyes, face and tone of his purrs. Tentatively, like reaching for shards of broken glass that would fall at any moment, she traced her fingers along his lower mandible bone, from below his ear, almost to the tip of the excitedly tapping tusk. She smiled, and did it again, with the same result. “If I rub under your chin, will you thump your leg too?” she asked.

Tan’ock just lifted her, and pressed her hard against the wall with his body. She cried out in surprise, giving mild slaps of protest, but quickly lost her train of thought, as he buried his face to her neck, licking along her collar bone right up to her ear. Her breath caught in her throat as the fine tip of his silky tongue would trace every millimeter of her ear, toying with her diamond stud earring, before gently lapping into her ear, followed by his warm breath.

Without realizing, she brought her right leg up to his hip, and he eagerly grasped it, to give her support, carefully he allowed her to feel his growing need for her, and continued his assault on her other ear. This time, she gently moaned, squeezing his shoulders form her raised position. She could feel the bulging of his clothing, almost hearing the fiber threads begin their successive popping, as they bore the stress of his growing erection.

“Oh god!” she nearly screeched. “It’s been so long!” She could feel a fire begin to build inside her, a fire she thought had long been forgotten. Not even Heeno seemed to be able to bring it to life. Then again, they hadn’t made love either, he said he wanted to wait for his honeymoon. She thought that was cute, and agreed, not knowing at the time the honeymoon he sought would be with her.

Tan’ock stopped, his breath in deep gasps. With his face pressed to the crook of her shoulder, he carefully let her leg go, then gently lowered her to the floor. “No, now,” he gasped, as her hands released his shoulders. “You no ready.”

Chonie stood there as he moved away. Her legs would not listen to her when her mind told her to kick him. How dare he do that to her! She was engaged to someone else! Someone she loved! Wasn’t she? “I’m sorry,” she said, before she could catch herself. With his quizzical look, she had to continue. “I hadn’t been touched like that…sense…long before I left Hawaii. I miss my Heeno.” Tan just huffed. “What?”

“You no miss Heeeenow,” he stated, before sliding her up the wall again, thrusting his groin to her sex beneath her dress. He remembered how his Zana would delight in his teasing of her this way, and he realized half the things he did with Zana, he never did with females after her passing. Especially this. “You miss MATE!!!” he finished.

Chonie squealed when he’d come at her, but she honestly could say it wasn’t in fear. His massive body crushed her to the wall, his strength holding her up, his actins demanding to keep her there. But his common sense prevailed, and despite her delicious arousing scent permeating the air in the air lock, he forced himself to let her down. Her body trembled in his grasp, he could tell, not just from her scent, but as an experienced male, that if he touched her beneath her dress, her sex would be ready for him.

Slowly, catching her breath, she looked up to his eyes, passed his muscled, heaving, chest. “Why stop?” she asked, almost a dare.

Tan’ock stepped away again. “You heart, full with Heeenow. I no mate female, with me NO IN HEART!” He stabbed his hand to the panel and the door slid open. A quick wave to her told her enough not to fool around and go with him.

No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t get him to look at her, nor say another word. As they walked the corridor, Ver’On came the other way, grunting to Tan’ock, handing him something, or at least trying to. Tan’ock just growled low to be left alone, and kept walking. Ver’On kept Chonie from following, handing her a small device. “Place with ear,” he said. She nodded, seeing how the device was made to slide over her ear, and put it on. “There. How is that?” he asked.

“Better,” she replied. “Your words are smoother to me now.”

“To guardian Ralph and your grandfather too. Though I’m not sure why.”

“Most likely a software issue,” she sighed, adjusting the shoulder strap to her tank. “We’ve had some of the same problems with machines at the hotel.”

Ver’On just turned his head to the side. He didn’t understand half of what she said, but rather than ask her to be clearer, he guided her to a large room with several chairs, sofa’s and pillows. “Wait here, your grandfather and Ralf will be here shortly.”

“Thank you. Where has Tan’ock gone?”

Ver’On sighed. “Scent is very powerful to us. Your scent is hard for us to ignore, when exposed to it for a long time. Tan’ock has probably gone to either cleanse himself, or fight; maybe both. I’ll tell him you’re looking for him.”

“Thank you. What of Ralph and Grandfather?”

“Ralph is being examined for treatment on our main ship. Your grandfather is there to assist Ralph.” Chonie nodded and went to sit down. “Has Tan’ock told you why he came to your world?”

    “No.”

Ver’On nodded. “Not to worry. He will. I’ll leave you to settle for a time. We’ll get underway as soon as Ralph is released from med bay.”

“Ok. Thanks.” Ver’On left, and Chonie curled into one of the plush chairs, thinking back to what had happened in the air lock.

Why would she be mad at Tan’ock for what he did? She did next to nothing to stop him. She even encouraged him. How could she love Heeno, and still do that with…someone…who wasn’t even human? She covered her eyes with her hands as the ship slowly rose higher above the canyon. If anyone found out…she’d never be with anyone again.

Ver’On found Tan’ock on the command deck, but before he could greet him, he realized he wasn’t just standing at the consol for nothing.

Tan’ock clicked his mandibles together. “Kal,” he sighed, “you can’t expect to have her fall out of the sky and land in your lap.” There was a long moment of quiet over the apparent open communications channel. “Kal?” he asked, not hearing his response.

“Hush,” Kal clicked gently in return. “I’m not alone.”

They could hear mild scuffling in the back ground, then another voice, an Ooman voice, apparently young, came over the link “Spirit Walker,” he called. “I asked you to watch over my mother. Maybe you couldn’t find her. Please, watch over her now. She was attacked last night. She barely got away. She’s working so hard. Please, I’m begging you, help her. This is a picture of her. She’s very pretty, but I’m her son, I’m supposed to say that. You may think her unworthy, because she is not of the Indians here, but I am, I am of my father’s blood, from my mother’s womb. My father’s people are trying to take me away from her, they say she’s not a good mother. But she is. Never has she broken a promise to me. She works so hard to keep me. I know there is more going on, something that my mother does not know, nor will my father’s people tell her. Please, let them sort this out on their own, but help her keep me. Please!” The boy broke down and cried.

Tan’ock and Ver’On listened intently as footsteps could be heard close to the link. They were Kal-esh’s, they were too heavy to be anyone else’s. “Please, Spirit Walker, help her,” the boy continued to plea. “I’ll do anything…anything you say, anything you want, I’ll do it. Just protect her, please.”

They heard a sudden intake of air, from the boy, then, “I protected her," Kal said gently. The boy gasped for air.
“Please keep protecting her! Spirit Walker Please! I’ll do anything!!!”
“I know. But what I have come here for is far greater than anything that you could ever imagine.”

    “What is that?”

“I know who attacked her last night, know they will not do so again.”

    “There will be others.”

    “Explain.”

“My mother’s family abandoned her when they learned she was carrying me. They have lots of money, lots of support, but left my mother with nothing. Her younger siblings, they make things difficult for her. My mother works very, very hard to afford a lawyer to fight to keep me. But her energy is running out, she can’t keep working to pay him, and soon he too will abandon her.

“My father’s family, refused to acknowledge my existence, till recently. Now they want to take me away from her. I swear they work with my mother’s family to make that happen, by forcing my mother to loose her lawyer, she will in turn lose me. She fights so hard Spirit Walker, she’s brave, strong, strong willed, but also loving. She is a great mother, any man would be honored to have her as his wife. But none will take her.”

    “Wife? What is Wife?”

    “Like...um...a mate.
    ”

They heard Kal click his mandibles in rapid thought. “Swear to me,” Kal began, “tell your mother nothing about me, absolutely nothing. I will continue to protect her, eventually make my presents known to her. If she is accepting of me, then, and only then, I will tell you what I have come here for.”

    “Accepting of what?”

“She will know. You do not need to right now. Go, return to your slumbers. Your mother will be safe this night.”

“I swear, and I will. Thank you.”

    “I will keep this,
” Kal stated, “to keep you to your word.”

“I will not break my word! I am Small Feather, I DO NOT BREAK MY WORD!!!
    ”

Kal trilled at the boy, even Tan’ock and Ver’On were impressed at the boy’s defense of his honor. “Very well, Small Feather. Your word, is your bond to me. Go…now!”

They heard the scuffling of small feet, some stomping, and then nothing else except the boy’s running footsteps in the background.

“Are you mad!” Tan’ock’s voice shot back.

“Shut up, Tan’ock,” he said. “
The boy offered himself and his mother to me, in a very ancient way.”

    “What are you talking about?”

“He laid a picture of himself and his mother, on the offering stone that he made. They will be mine.”

“You went there to find a mate!”

“And I will leave with a new son, as well.”

The line clicked off. “Kal? KAL-ESH!? What an idiot!”

“He seems to know what he’s doing. If they boy has made an offering to him, there is little that we can do. The only one who can break the offering, is an Elder’s mate. Sense it is a female and her child that are made available.”

“Do you think El would go along with this?”

“She may, she may not. I’m not going to force the issue. I’ll let her decide for herself. Oh, by the way, Chonie is asking about you.”

Tan’ock grumbled deep in his chest. Here Ver’On had the most fertile Ooman female he’d ever met, Kal’esh is made an offer of a female and her offspring, and he can barely sway one Ooman heart. He was losing his touch. More to the point, he was losing Chonie.
